Barbara Anne Horton “I love it when new people come in and try my classes, it’s great to see their faces while they’re working out and having fun. It is so rewarding to see people meet their fitness goals - whether it’s to lose weight, get tone, or to regain mobility and flexibility. ” Barbara Anne Horton became an instructor after she saw a need for an Aqua Arthritis class in Temple and the class has since blossomed. She holds certifications through the American Arthritis Foundation and the US Water Fitness Association, and she has over 18 years of experience teaching water health and fitness classes. She routinely teaches about 80 aquatic classes a month, which include Senior Water Aerobics, Aqua Arthritis, Cardio Splash, and Power Walking.

City of Temple Legacy Tree Program Temple has some great trees, but very few people know of them. In order to recognize and increase awareness of them, the Temple Tree Advisory Board established the Legacy Tree Program in February 2009. A Legacy Tree is a tree or stand of trees that due to its age, size, species, quality or historic association, is of landmark importance, and its retention as such will not unreasonably interfere with the use of the property it is located on. Anyone may nominate a tree for Legacy Tree status, as long as the property owner gives approval for the nomination. Legacy Trees are divided into 5 categories:
Heritage Tree
Parkway Resource Tree
• Trunk at least 8 inches in diameter • 50 years or older
• Groups of trees in public right-of-ways, public parking lots or trails
• Connection to a significant historic event, building, district
• Consistent design themes with similar sizes, shapes, health, and forms
• Planted by an historically significant individual
• Create a canopy over a public right-of-way
• Unique or special in size and/or form
Landmark Tree
• Six or more trees with trunks within 100 feet • Same or similar species and forms
• Striking or unusual trees with high aesthetic value • Large for the particular species • Special or unusual form • Interesting flowers or branching patterns • Species rare to their location

• Native, naturalized, or surviving without intervention
Champion Tree • Largest living tree of its species located within the city limits of Temple • Champions are by assigning points based on height, circumference, and crown spread
You are invited to nominate a tree or stand of trees for designation as a Temple Legacy Tree. Nominations are accepted continuously and are judged by the Tree Advisory Board during normally scheduled quarterly meeting. The Board will award marker stones to be placed at the tree for all approved nominations. Nomination forms can be found on-line at www.TempleTrees.org or by calling Val Roming at 254.298.5401. www.TempleParks.com
Memorial Tree Program Pay a long-lasting tribute to an individual or occasion by planting a tree in his or her honor. Memorial Trees are planted in public parks so everyone can enjoy the shade, beauty and enjoyment a living tree provides. Commemorate a graduation, birth, passing, wedding, anniversary, or any special recognition. Planting a tree in a city park is a wonderful way to honor a loved one and also provide a gift for the whole community.

Children get around by bike and most love to ride around the neighborhood. Knowing the rules of the road and protecting the body while bicycling is very important. Most drivers license facilities offer free bicycle safety brochures. Taking the time to go over the rules for bicycle traveling can help keep a child safe. Many areas of the body can be protected while riding but the most important is the head – bicycle helmets are readily available at discount stores and specialized sporting good stores.

Have Pen? Let’s Write!
Warmer weather may mean it’s time to break out the grill, here are some tips and ideas for a healthier grilling cookout: • Go Fish! Fish, especially oily fish like tuna and salmon have great nutritional benefits including omega-3 fatty acids. Rub a fillet with lemon juice and parsley or rosemary for enhanced flavor. • Make a better burger: if you’re grilling burgers, be sure to buy lean or extra lean beef, drain off the excess fat after cooking and avoid making huge patties – remember that a serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards (3 oz). Add finely chopped green pepper to your beef to get in some veggies. • Baked fries: Slice white or sweet potatoes into sticks, lightly spray with olive oil cooking spray, pepper and paprika and bake on a cookie sheet for 40 minutes at 375 degrees. • Veggie kabobs: load up skewers with mushrooms, peppers, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash or other veggies. Spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray and grill until slightly blackened.
Remember those good ol’ days of summer when you were a kid? Why not write about them! Explore writing as a craft and art form, while focusing on your own writing. Enroll in this unstructured writing course to fine tune your writing skills and satisfy your desire to put your memories and thoughts onto paper. “I enjoy sharing my life skills with others; I want these life-shaping traditions to be carried out by generations to come.” Master Gardener Kathy White’s love for gardening began at an early age. Her parents had a farm with a large family garden; she and her brothers had daily chores of watering, weeding, harvesting or doing whatever else was necessary to keep that garden productive as it was vital to their well-being. Kathy says that gardening is in her genetic makeup as both sets of her grandparents were farmers. Kathy and her siblings learned how to can and preserve their homegrown fruits and vegetables and learned the art of cooking from their mother. Now we all know why Kathy is so comfortable in a garden and a kitchen. Join Kathy in one of her informative, quarterly gardening classes offered at Sammons Community Center.

The City of Temple encompasses parks, gardens, and trails. These areas provide our community with an enhanced quality of life through recreational spaces, picnic spots, exercise opportunities, and community gathering areas. Temple has a remarkable 58 developed parks and special use areas. The parks supply animal habitat, flood control, climate control and oxygen producing trees. These features are vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for our community. Parks, gardens, and trails also help attract businesses to our area which improves Temple’s economy. Temple’s Parks and Leisure Services Department works diligently to provide citizens with clean, attractive, and well maintained areas. Due to the number of parks in Temple, it is difficult to keep each park in its top condition at all times. With your enthusiasm, willingness, and effort we can keep Temple’s parks in prime condition. This program is fun, easy and rewarding. We ask the following of each adopter:
• Each group/individual must fill out
one Adopt-A-Park partnership form
• Each participant needs to fill out
and return a release form before the workday date
• Each group needs one contact person
• Each group/individual should
volunteer in the park at least 3 days out of the year
• The first workday will need to be
scheduled with an Adopt-A-Park staff
• Volunteer hours need to be tracked and submitted to the Parks and Leisure Services Administration Office
A sign will be placed in an adopter’s park to recognize the groups/individuals. Temple Parks and Leisure Services Adopt-APark Program would like to thank our adopters for their dedication, involvement, and hard work. These people have made a commitment to help maintain Temple’s parks. We encourage all Temple residents and organizations to help beautify our city by adopting a park!
