Improve Air Quality Tree leaves absorb dirty air and carbon dioxide and remove the pollutants and produce clean oxygen for us to breathe. Trees also help cool the air by releasing moisture into the air through a process called transpiration, and with the Texas heat – I think we can all appreciate any cooling we can get! Fun Fact: 100 trees can remove 5 tons of carbon dioxide per year! Improve Water and Land Quality Water is cleaned as it passes through the roots and into the groundwater. Tree roots hold soil in place so that it is not washed away in rainstorms, decreasing soil and hill erosion and decreasing polluted runoff into streams and other water sources. Fun Fact: Leafy tree canopies catch rainfall before it reaches the ground, allowing some of it to gently drip and the rest to evaporate. This combined with shade from the tree on a lawn can reduce watering costs and keep your lawn looking great! Save Money If you strategically plant the correct species of trees around your house or business, you can save money in cooling and heating bills! Shade from trees on homes and buildings can help reduce cooling costs at the hottest time of the day. Trees properly placed around buildings as windbreaks can save significant heating costs during the winter months. Also, trees along roadways and parking lots can help cool the whole neighborhood, by providing shade to those surfaces that tend to hold in the heat from the sun. Fun Fact: You can save up to 30% on cooling costs by strategically planting trees around your home! Increase Property Values Landscaping, especially with trees can significantly increase property values. Houses in tree lined neighborhoods sell for a premium – especially in Texas. Property values of landscaped homes are 5% to 20% higher than those of non-landscaped homes. Fun Fact: Each large, front yard tree can add 1% to the sales price of a home! Trees are an important part of community infrastructure and vital to our personal and environmental health. They are a legacy that we plant and leave for many generations, impacting our city with a better quality of life, a better business climate, and an enhanced sense of place. If you have questions about what trees to plant or where, please visit www.templetrees.org or contact me at 254.298.5401 or vroming@templetx.gov. -Val Roming

Temple Parks & Leisure Services staff work diligently to provide citizens with clean, attractive, and well-maintained areas. Due to the large number of parks in Temple, it is difficult to keep each park in top condition at all times. We are very thankful for all the help from our wonderful community members and organizations that help us maintain and enhance our parks! Adopt a Park groups help inform parks staff of issues or wants for their park and also organize park work days: cleaning up, planting plants and trees, and other projects to maintain or enhance their park.
