Welcome to PLAY Greetings and Salutations! As summer winds down and fall approaches, like the seasons, many new and wonderful things are happening at CARD. There is a new captain at the helm, Jerry Haynes, CARD General Manager, replacing Steve Visconti, who retired last July. Steve built a solid foundation and provided a course of action for growth and opportunity. Mr. Haynes will build upon the foundation, navigating CARD to the next level of community involvement, partnerships, and positive impacts. We realize to be a meaningful organization, we need to have community support, involvement, and action. CARD is expanding its community involvement and opportunities to positively impact CARD participants and the Chico Community. New things are coming that will help to enrich all our lives!

Our Time Together: Parent/Child Program: for 18-35 Months Old Fall 2014 Begins Wednesday, 9/3 Our Time Together can be an exciting and fun opportunity for your child to improve current skills, learn new skills, make friends, and have fun. This is also an opportunity for us to create a parenting community and share development milestones. During the toddler years, your child will make huge strides physically, intellectually, and emotionally, whether it’s learning to use the potty or stacking blocks. Something to observe in this program is how your child plays adjacent to other children in the playgroup. This cooperative social interaction is called parallel play and helps children begin language development, build confidence, and form relationships. Your child will increasingly learn to share and become aware of other’s emotions, as well as learn cause and effect through trial and error of adjusting and solving problems in play. Not only are our classes a wonderful bonding opportunity for you and your child, they are an excellent way to meet new friends, introduce your child to other children, and find others that will support you through the exciting adventure of parenthood. What is the structure of the class? Each day the classroom will be set up with developmentally age appropriate toys and activities that parents can do with their child. The teachers will be there to assist parents and children in participation. How many teachers are there for the class? We have one teacher for each program. The teacher is hand selected for their experience working with young children. All staff are fingerprinted. Do I need to stay with my child during class? Yes. This class is formatted as a parent/child class with the goal of giving parents an opportunity to bond, meet other parents that have children the same age as theirs and provide parent support.

Thrive: K-12 Learning Center

Fall 2014 through Spring 2015 Our mission at Thrive is to inspire a life-long love of learning by respecting each person’s individual interests, strengths, and capabilities. It is a place where children are free to learn, inspire, imagine, create, play, and shine! All sessions will live up to that mission by being a free and open structured environment where children are liberated to choose their level of participation. Session advisors work with the children to create an emergent and free flowing curriculum that derives from the imaginations of the children enrolled. Learning invitations are presented in an environment that fosters imagination, selfmotivation, and meaningful experiences. Books, websites, magazines, nature, music, math concepts, science projects, art projects, building materials, creative play, and idea sharing will spark the imagination. We strongly encourage families to stay with the same time schedule throughout the year if at all possible. This encourages continuity within the group and fosters strong bonds. Some participants come for all the sessions and others choose to sign up for one or two. Advisors: Cyndi Pereira and Jennifer Anderson. CARD is a vendor for South Sutter and CORE. To register with a PO from your ES, please go into the CARD office at 545 Vallombrosa Avenue in Chico prior to the start of your session. Quick Studies Painting Class

Classically trained painter, Shanon Essex, shows you the progression from line (the sketch) to form/mass and finally to texture and light in this rigorous class. Students learn how acquiring brush mileage (experience) provides the opportunity for experimenting and problem solving without investing days in a single painting. Brush work, strokes and color, and mixing techniques are discussed and reviewed. Students will work with still life and landscape subjects gaining confidence and improving brush skills while learning how to edit out unimportant details by doing multiple, smaller paintings per class (3 or more!) with the longest being a 1 hour piece. *Please see the materials list available on the CARD website at http://www.chicorec.com/Classes/Art/ index.html. Qi Gong Tai Ji Workshop

Qi Gong, a Chinese form of mindful breathing, is the achievement through practice of the skills of breathing and the cultivation of Qi, or internal, functional energy. The word Qi in Chinese also means breath. It is through breathing that relaxation is achieved. Tai Ji Quan utilizes a series of slow movements through which the practitioner becomes balanced, flexible and more responsive while less reactive to external stimuli. Qi Gong and Tai Ji represent a Yin/Yang polarity: stillness within which there is internal movement, and movement within which there is a goal of stillness. This class offers an experiential introduction to these two arts. Instructor: Higgy Lerner, L.Ac. PV Rec Center, Multi-Purpose Room.

All classes are monthly with new sessions starting at the beginning of each month. Dancewear and shoes are available for purchase at the studio. Kinetics Academy of Dance, 627 Broadway. All fees are due monthly.

Baby Ballet Three little kittens lost their mittens and they danced away to find them! What if we sprinkled fairy dust on our toes and flew to Fairyland? Tutus, feathers, fairy wands, stories, and tons of props make these dance classes fun and engaging! Black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes are required and can be purchased at Kinetics.

Beginning Ballet Calling all Princesses! Experience the joy of dance in this beginning ballet class. Skip like a princess, walk like a queen, and leap like a unicorn! Bring your imagination to this fun ballet class. Classical ballet is taught with a creative twist! Black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes are required and can be purchased at Kinetics.

Movement and Sound Do you have a high energy mover? We’ve got just the class. This dance class is for kids who love to dance, but who may not appreciate tutus and tights. Each themed class has lots of high energy dances. We’ll travel to the swamp, squish in the mud, and hide like alligators, or perhaps we’ll take a trip to the circus, complete with silly clowns. We use lots of costumes, stories, props and instruments to have a rollicking good time! Students should wear a white shirt and black shorts or sweatpants.

Hip Hop Edgy and upbeat! This trendy street style of dance is done to contemporary music, but don’t worry, all movements and music are completely “clean”!

Tap n Tumble Learn the basics of tap with a dose of tumbling for good measure! This class covers the fundamentals of tap, along with musicality, rhythm games, tumbling, and an obstacle course. Lots of fun for girls and boys. Please wear a black leotard, pink tights, and black tap shoes for girls. Boys should wear a white top, black bottoms, and black tap shoes. Dancewear and shoes are available for purchase at Kinetics Academy of Dance.

Ballet Fitness Ballet with a twist! This class includes a traditional ballet barre, and some center work, but adds the extra fitness component of a “floor barre”, or ballet specific core toning exercises. This is a beautiful way to increase your strength and fitness level.

FALL Spikeball Academy (5th-8th grade)

Spikeball has been described as a hybrid between volleyball and four-square. It is played 2 vs 2 with up to 3 hits before hitting if off of the net to change possession to the other team. But unlike volleyball, this game is played 360 degrees with no sides or boundaries, so everyone can really get moving! Spikeball involves hand-eye coordination, anticipation, agility, deception, team work, communication, foot work, and is a fun new game that is rapidly growing! Sign your child up to learn a new popular game, and gain skills that can be transferred to any sport. Program will be held at DeGarmo Park.

League Movement Teams may be subject to move from their league of choice at the discretion of the Recreation Supervisor if it is deemed for the benefit of the CARD softball program. Prior history and records will be considered when it comes to league placement. Spring league champions MAY be moved up to a higher league for the subsequent season if also deemed appropriate and teams who struggle in a given league may also be moved down. Our goal is to facilitate proper league placement over the course of time. While you may not consider yourself a “B” or “C” level team, you may be one of the top teams playing on that evening and it may be necessary that you play in a higher/lower league.
