The citizens of Chico put a stake in the ground: recreation is vital for quality of life. By a vote of the people, CARD was created. Separate from the City of Chico, CARD is a Special District that is governed by a 5-member Board of Directors you elect.

2018

Over 70 years, CARD has grown and changed to meet your needs as a community. We now have more than 10 parks to explore and dozens of classes, sports, and activities for all ages. And there’s room for more; together let’s envision what’s next for Chico recreation!

Let’s Celebrate this September! CARD formed in September of 1948, and we’re celebrating our 70th anniversary with a big community party! Really, it’s a “thank you” for making recreation a hallmark of Chico. Everyone’s invited—you, your family (bring the dog), your friends and your neighbors. Full details will follow, but we anticipate sprawling across DeGarmo Park with music, food, games and other fun.

Nature School is a first learning experience in nature. It is a drop-off program designed for Pre-K, TK and Kindergartners. Children learn about nature, letters, numbers, colors and shapes through crafts, songs, games, animal visits and guided exploration of the park. We use curriculum that meets state standards in science, literacy, math, art and STEM. Each class has a different theme. All children should be potty trained and ready for an experience away from their family. Our teachers are happy to help facilitate “goodbyes” as is often needed with this age. For optimum learning, a full year of participation is encouraged. No class 3/20 to 3/29.

Classes for All Ages Preschool Programs CARD’s preschool programs feature a designated classroom and staff who specialize in toddlers. Each program will promote an all-inclusive, positive, educational environment that will set your child up to succeed. How do register for a Preschool Program? Choose the class that is the appropriate age and level for your child. If there is room in the class, you will be able to register immediately online or at the CARD Office at 545 Vallombrosa Ave. If the class is full, you will be placed on a waitlist and will be contacted if a spot opens up. New students can start at the beginning of any month. How long is the session?

Our Time Together (18-35 months old)

This class is formatted as a parent/child class with the goal of giving parents an opportunity to bond, meet other parents who have children the same age as theirs and provide parent support. Our Time Together can be an exciting and fun opportunity for your child to improve current skills, learn new skills, make friends, and have fun. This is also an opportunity for us to create a parenting community and share development milestones. During the toddler years, your child will make huge strides physically, intellectually, and emotionally, whether it’s learning to use the potty or stacking blocks. Something to observe in this program is how your child plays adjacent to other children in the playgroup. This cooperative social interaction is called parallel play and helps children begin language development, build confidence, and form relationships. Your child will increasingly learn to share and become aware of other’s emotions, as well as learn cause and effect through trial and error of adjusting and solving problems in play.

Our preschool programs are ongoing classes that run September-May. Each month builds on the previous time spent in class for continuous growth and learning. Should you choose to not continue, simply notify the CARD Office (530) 895-4711 or egonzales@chicorec.com so we can contact the next person on the waitlist.

For your convenience, we have a Monday, Wednesday and Monday/Wednesday option based on how many days you would like to attend the program. New students can start at the beginning of any month.

How do payments work?

Program Instructor: Michelle Gustafson

The fee for each class is due the last day of the month prior. If payment is received on or after the 1st of the month, the fee increases by $10. Payments can be made online, in person at the CARD office, or through automatic payments.

Blitz Puff Pastry

What do a savory caramelized onion and sage tart, a sumptuous baked brie en croute, and a crisp cherry almond pastry have in common? Decadent and delectable buttery puff pastry, the secret weapon and go-to favorite of bakers worldwide. Beginning Photoshop®

Photos can be taken with any digital camera and printed at the drugstore as snapshots. However, on your own computer, make your images into personal works of highly creative and fine works of art to meet your personal vision and style. After taking .jpg or RAW photos, learn to use Adobe Photoshop or very affordable Photoshop Elements to make your images really stand out beyond simple adjustments. We start with a thorough “tour” of the program and basic adjustments on screen, then move into the highly creative world of multi-layer composite techniques for completely new imagery. Bring a Mac or PC laptop computer with any recent version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements installed. An external mouse is very helpful. We will work with instructor provided photos, but feel free to bring some of your own photos to work on using newly learned techniques. Saturday includes a one hour, no host lunch break.Instructor: Dave Bermann, dave@mountainthymephoto.com. *CARD Community Center, Room 3. **PV Recreation Center, Room 1.

Beginner/Intermediate – The goal for this program is to develop skills and a passion for the Freestyle and Greco Roman styles of wrestling, which are the styles of wrestling contested at the Olympic games. Each practice session is tailored to youth wrestlers; sessions consist of live wrestling, technique, tumbling, and creative games -- all in an attempt to foster an appreciation and love for the sport of wrestling that can be nurtured over time. The environment is purposefully low-stress and enjoyment is our highest priority. Instructor: Keith Rollins, two-time NSCIF Coach of the Year and current Chico Wrestling Head Coach. League Movement

Teams may be moved from their league of choice, at the discretion of the Recreation Supervisor, should it be deemed beneficial to the CARD softball program as a whole. Prior team history and records will be considered upon league creation. Spring league champions MAY be moved up to a higher league for the subsequent season if deemed appropriate. Teams that struggle in a given league may also be moved down. Our goal is to facilitate proper league placement over the course of time. While you may not consider yourself a “B” or “C” level team, you may be one of the top teams playing on that evening, making it necessary that you play in a higher (or lower) league. If you are not completely satisfied, contact us and we will arrange for you to do one of the following: 1. Repeat the program at no charge. 2. Receive full credit that can be applied to any other program. 3. Receive a full refund. Currently, this guarantee applies to all of our programs except Adult Leagues, Facility Rentals, Trips and Tours, and all grant/scholarship funded programs. These programs have specific policies that apply. Your complete satisfaction with these programs is equally valued, and we will work with you to resolve your concerns. To receive a credit, repeat a program, or obtain a refund, please contact us in writing, by phone, by email, or in person. Requests must be made within ten (10) business days after the last program meeting. Your receipt, cancelled check or proof of I.D. may be required. We understand that unexpected circumstances may also arise resulting in a need for you to withdraw from a class or program. If so, please notify us prior to the first day of the class, and you will receive a full refund. Unfortunately, due to the nature of some of the programs, there are exceptions. Please refer to the program for additional information and exceptions. Requests for refunds or transfers must be made in person, by email or by phone. Your receipt, cancelled check or proof of identification may be required. Refund checks will be processed within fifteen (15) business days.
