Arnold Palmer
Professional Golfer Generous Benefactor
My greatest victory in life wasn’t a winning putt. It wasn’t a hole-in-one. In fact, it wasn’t even on a golf course. My greatest victory came in 1989 when I helped establish Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. I, like so many physicians and community members, was committed to bringing lifesaving healthcare to children and families in Central Florida. Twenty years later, I’m proud to say we’ve succeeded. Golf is my sport. This is my legacy. Join me in celebrating Arnold Palmer Medical Center’s 20th birthday. Be a part of our 20th birthday celebration. Be Hip. Be Conscious. Be Hybrid.
I
'm often asked how we come up with the themes for each issue. Our "Earth-Inspired Living" theme all started when I randomly began a meeting (with a face of concern) by saying, "I'm really worried about the planet." Chrissy nearly fell out of her chair in laughter. She was probably waiting to hear my concerns about some of our more day-to-day stresses. You know ... meeting deadlines, increasing our advertiser base, what to wear to our next social outing.
Founder / Editorial & Creative Director
Blame it on too much Discovery Earth or our new office near the "Green Block" (see You Are So Here on page 60). Whatever the reason, I have suddenly grown an eco-friendly conscience, and upon further investigation, I'm not the only one. This once alternative way of thinking has sneaked its way into the family culture.
A hybrid lifestyle is being green without sacrificing modern conveniences. So much more than just recycling, this issue exposes subtle ways to live sustainably through fashion, fitness, philanthropy, food and more. We've even converted our new managing editor, Jenny Fauser, to the green team by exploring a lifestyle culture that's easy and healthy. I hope that you find some local businesses and products that will help you live your hip, sustainable life. See you at the farmers' market!

eing the “least green person at PLAYGROUND,” I am surprisingly the most excited about this issue. Why, you ask? Because the articles are interesting, easy and inspiring enough for those of us with a HUGE carbon footprint. A big "thank you" to all of our advertisers for continuing to support PLAYGROUND Magazine. We have had so much fun partnering with our clients on events over the summer and planning events for the fall. Be sure to mark your calendar for "PLAYGROUND's Hippest Dad Contest & Tailgate Party," to be held at Sweet Cheeks Boutique in Sanford on October 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Like all PLAYGROUND events, the day will include killer entertainment, fabulous treats and rockin’ swag bags. Check out our website for more details: www.playground-magazine.com.

You can also join PLAYGROUND on November 7 at the "Sunshine Challenge 5K," being held at SeaWorld Orlando. This family-friendly run/walk will benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. PLAYGROUND will be walking in honor of Heather’s nephew Camden Kibler, who passed away last year from leukemia. We’d love for you to walk with us; just register at www.fastercure.org. A special congratulations to Lulu Belle Baby Boutique and My Gym, which each opened their second location in the Dr. Phillips area, and a huge welcome to our new partners: 3 Peas in a Pod, The Orlando REP, After Hours Pediatrics, Legacy Academy Lake Mary, Free to Be Me Baby Products, Lovey Duds, Child’s World of Learning, Inflatable Fun Factory, Cutie Patootie Kids Resale, Shine On Kids and Leo’s Italian Ice. G is for Green
Hot Green Mama: A mom who wants to create a healthier environment and lifestyle for her family, and look good doing it.
News Flash: You don't have to have a Ph.D. in tree-ology to be "green." So then, how do we cut through the clutter and simply make a difference in our family’s life? It’s simple. Really! Let us give you a few easy secrets to help you embrace the trend and earn your spot as a Hot Green Mama (or Papa). Written by Jennifer Engler Photography by Cristy Nielsen Makeup by Natasha Smith
We all agree, the amount of information available is enough to make anyone’s head spin. Consider this: What if being "green" involved a spectrum of choices instead of a sea of “shoulds” & “should nots?” There are many shades of green, a vast array of opportunities, but we’ll take three for now: Mint, Kelly and our favorite, Moss. Here’s how it works: If you remember to take your reusable bags to the grocery store ... way to go, you are Mint green. If you remember to turn off all the lights and unplug the appliances ... you got it, you’re closer to Kelly green. If you remember to do all of that, and cook the veggies from your backyard garden for dinner ... that’s right, you’re on your way to becoming as Moss green as our friend Kermit! For those of you who aren’t even on the green spectrum but who’ve stayed with us thus far, there’s hope for you, too. Here are five easy tips to get you on your way to becoming Hot Green Mamas and Papas.
TIP 1 Don't be overwhelmed.
Take a step back and figure out what is most important to you RIGHT NOW. Do you want to start replacing your household cleaners or take a look at what you’re feeding your family? You don't need to green everything all at once. Take baby steps.
TIP 2
Do your research. There are tons of resources available to help steer you in the right direction. I know what you’re thinking, “I don’t have time to read books.” Well, our wanna-be-green friend, this is where technology is your best buddy. Browse your iPhone while in the pickup line at school and learn how to make homemade, nontoxic household cleaner.
TIP 3 Know your community.
Go to your local farmers' market. There are so many great ones in Central Florida, from Lake Mary to Dr. Phillips, that are great family outings and most often include kids activities. Make a play date to pick strawberries in the spring at Pappy’s Patch in Oviedo. Explore the Whole Foods stores in town and stay in the loop for its discounts and many events.
TIP 4 Talk about it.
Ask your friends,"What type of cleaning products do you use? Have you ever made your own? What do your kids like to eat?" Everyone is so quick to compare their children’s milestones and wardrobes; why not evaluate their environments?
TIP 5
Have fun! When it’s fun, it’s not work. Recycle with your kids, or even better, plant a garden. A little goes a long way, and making small changes is better than making none at all. So stand tall and feel proud knowing that whatever you choose to do, you are doing your best to create a better environment for your family.

Fuel-efficient vehicles are great. Driving less is even better. Written by www.LighterFootstep.com Photo by Amy Smith
Bikes are tough to beat in terms of urban transportation. They’re reliable, emissionsfree, take up very little parking space and cost almost nothing to operate. Depending on your commute or the length of your errand, it’s possible that a bicycle will get you where you’re going faster than an automobile. Plus, they are great for your health. For many people, a bicycle could replace a car (or a second vehicle). Even if putting your auto out to pasture isn’t a realistic option, having a bike on hand can substantially lower your monthly transportation costs and environmental footprint.
What is an urban bike, anyway?
You can commute, get some fresh air or fetch groceries on pretty much any bike that rolls. Urban bicycles are a developing class of bike that falls between skinnytired, racing-style bicycles and their burly off-road cousin, the mountain bike. They’re known by a lot of trade names: city bikes, commuters and town bicycles. Generally speaking, urban bikes are optimized for reliable city travel. Features vary from bike to bike and between manufacturers. Most urban bikes are built with a comfortable, upright riding position for better visibility in traffic. They may be equipped with the following: Cargo racks; fenders and mudflaps; a light set; chain guard; wider, puncture-resistant tires; and a kickstand. Almost all urban bikes are multispeed, and many feature low-maintenance internal gearing. Celebrity dad fueling the urban cycling trend? You guessed it, Mr. Jolie-Pitt. Things Kiddos Learn in the Car
How many times have you missed the opportunity to connect and teach your little passengers something new while driving in the car? We all feel that guilt when we pick up the cell phone, knowing that we should be "in the moment" with our kid instead. So, here's a little reminder of the things that can be (and are being) learned specifically in the car. Photo by Amy Smith
1 A sense of direction
Teaching left from right is a cinch while you're driving. It also instills an awareness of your child's surroundings. Make him your copilot by asking which way to turn when you're leaving school. Reinforce and repeat the direction that he chose. You'll be surprised how fun it is and how quickly he'll learn left from right.
2
Sign language The next time your child "flips the bird" on the playground, don't blame TV. Those bouts of road rage that you let slip are well-documented by your backseat observer (and replicated at the worst times). It's hard to keep your cool when cut off in traffic, but breathe deeply and be aware of your examplary response.
3 Letting loose
There's nothing better than singing in the car. It's just one of those mood-enhancing activities that lift your spirits, and theirs. Show off your carefree attitude for your toddler by breaking into song and dance to instantly turn boredom into bonding. Get an A+ in parenting for the day by teaching them educational tunes like the 50 States song. "Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas..." Get an A++ in "cool parenting" by teaching your little gal the shoulder pop.
4 Learning from them
When you get off that cell phone and become present, you'll actually start learning from your kids. Usually it's great life lessons like, "Don't sweat the small stuff." For example, the next time your schedule is delayed by the mega-long train, glance in the backseat. I bet you'll see your little conductor's eyes filled with amazement. She's a great reminder that those common things that annoy us might actually be some of the coolest things in the world. Toot, toot!
5
Family dynamics You'd probably be surprised by how much of that casual conversation with your sister turns into a gossip-fest with little ears in tune. We've heard more than one story about how kids have overheard and divulged some unfriendly comments made by their parents. So, if you don't have anything nice to say — don't say it on the phone with the kids in the car. Capiche? After experiencing your new car ride connections, your kids will very quickly start learning the best lesson of all: They are more important than your phone calls.

Stay Connected Without Blowing a Fuse Does life at the moment consist of a full-time job, chasing after a toddler (or two), scheduling quality time with your better half and failing miserably at staying connected with family and friends? Believe it or not, today’s technology can actually help (not hinder) your life balance. Here’s how to use the forces of technolgy for good. Written by Amanda Keefer

To Be or Not to Be ... One of Those Parents Who Take Their Kids to the Theatre
If you’re from New York or have friends who are, there’s that little part of you that hangs your head in shame when the northerners start talking about all of the culture their kids have at their fingertips. Lift your heads, friends — there's a place in Central Florida that will win over even the savviest of Broadway babies: The Orlando Repertory Theatre. Nestled in what many consider the cultural hub of Central Florida, "The Rep" has been producing the best in family theatre since 1970. It's a place where art house meets the playhouse. Don't dare confuse it as just a “children's theatre,” because there's something here for everyone. Sure, your kids will love it, but so will you. Written By Ricky Roxburgh

Kiddie Culture | The Orlando Repertory Theatre
The Rep A Place to Socialize Your Budding Socialite
Theatre is about more than being entertained; it’s a social experience. It's a place to see and be seen. Step inside The Rep, and you’ll catch the vibe that this is something special. Here the kids dress to the nines and carry themselves with just a touch of sophistication. Though the price is comparable, taking in a show at The Rep is a far cry from a conventional night at the movies. If it weren't for the vibrant walls and the children’s stories featured in this season's productions, you might think you were standing in the lobby of one of Broadway’s top theatres.
No Need to Bring the Aspirin or the Blackberry
If you’re envisioning an audience filled with screaming kids (and shushing parents) while performances are in front of a cardboard cutout, you're so wrong. This is professional theatre at its best. The Rep makes its own costumes, has its own scene shop and boasts an in-house technical staff creating enchanting worlds within each of their three (yes, three) theatres. Jeff Revels, artistic director, asserts, “The key is approaching it at your highest level of artistic integrity. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because young people are the toughest audiences. Lose them for one moment, and you know it.” Don’t worry about trying to buy into little Timmy playing the role as the dad in Peter Pan; the actors at The Rep are professionals, and usually, unless the part demands it, they are grown-ups.
A Far Cry from Family Night at Chuck E. Cheese's
Instead of corralling your kids into the minivan and heading to the local pizza joint or catching the latest blockbuster, consider this: A movie is something you watch, but a play is something you experience. Theatre, by nature, is a communal thing, and whether they laugh or cry, children come away with a memory of an emotional experience. It exposes them to a new dimension of creativity and inspires kids to open their imaginations to new possibilities. It gives them the opportunity to vicariously experience the circumstances created for the play. For families, it sparks conversation and opens the door to discussing important issues.
28
PLAYGROUND Fall 2009
Why Do Children Nao Tsurumaki, General Manager Because theatre fosters creativity that will help them discover the world they live in and the world they’ve never seen, as well as independent thinking that will help them learn life’s challenges and joy. Gary Cadwallader, Education Director Theatre is storytelling and one of the oldest art forms we have. We collectively sit in a dark theatre to share LIVE human experiences and discover who we are, who we might become and who we might avoid becoming. Children inherently resonate with theatre and the arts because children are in touch with their imaginations.
Get Connected with Something Real
Gene Columbus, executive director at The Rep, emphasizes that theatre is invaluable in the intellectual and emotional development of kids. “Theatre is written to be spoken, and hearing the language the way it is supposed to be spoken is very important.” He continues, “It teaches them about conflict. It’s about being enlightened and learning. That’s especially important to young people. When an actor is within 10 or 15 feet of you and you see the tears, it’s powerful.”
Sweet Deals & Events
Need Theatre? Meggin Weaver, Actor I think children need theatre for so many reasons. They can use the visceral stimulus of theatre to connect to a story in a way that is unique to our brand of storytelling. It also proves to children (and adults) that our imaginations are powerful and precious. Brandon Roberts, Actor When I am on stage, I open a window and invite audiences into a world that is a departure from their own, and there is no greater reward than to have them step into that world with you. Young audiences magnify that experience as they allow their imaginations to go wild and fully share the experience that is more involved and active than simply watching television or movies.
Bonnie Kelly is a longtime patron of The Rep who takes advantage of the theatre’s sweet deals, like the Family Four Pack ($240), which scores a family seats for the entire season. She's also a fan of Sonny's Family Nights, where families can scarf down ribs and culture ($22 for adults and $16 for the kiddies). Opening nights/days offer up special activities, such as scavenger hunts, face painting, balloon artists and live music. “My children look forward to going to the theatre. I think it is because my husband and I have exposed them to that aspect of entertainment. A show that is real, a set that has been constructed for that show, actors that you get to meet afterwards and a performance that is always the topic of discussion on the drive home.” For an insider peek on the magic, The Rep offers tours one Saturday a month, actually guided by the actors from the shows.
Curtain Call
Their 2009-2010 season features takes on classic reads, like Charlotte’s Web, Ramona Quimby and The Berenstain Bears, that no doubt were bedtime staples when mom and dad wore Underoos. “The Giver,” which has long been The REP’s most requested show, will provide some compelling drama for families with older kids. “How I Became a Pirate” features the spectacle of a pirate ship live onstage, while “Dear Santa” offers families a candy-coated dose of holiday cheer with a spectacular journey into Santa’s workshop designed by Disney veteran Cyndi White. If you’ve seen one of their shows, you can attest to The Rep’s … err … rep. If you haven’t, order some tickets, turn off the cartoons, hop in the SUV and go get you some culture.

Halloween Heaven
I’m not sure if it’s the candy or the spooky decorations, the parties or the theme park events that make fall so fun, but wrap it all up, hand me a candy apple, and I am in Halloween HEAVEN. Here are a few of my favorite things, and some cool new tricks I found, to make my hyper angels howl with delight this trick-or-treat season. Written by Jenny Fauser Non-eerie Events SeaWorld’s Spooktacular is BY FAR my favorite theme park event for our spooky season. From silly Halloween-themed shows to gobs and gobs of candy for your goblins, SeaWorld offers a day of frivolity and carefree trick-or-treating. PLAYGROUND tip: Go before Halloween and beat the crazy October 31 crowd. Event begins October 3, continuing on select days throughout the month, and is included with park admission. www.seaworld.com Looking for more Hallow-themed events? Why not take your precious pixie for a night at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party? Take your tyke trick-or-treating throughout the park on select dates September 4 through November 1. Be sure to stick around for Mickey’s “Boo-to-You" Halloween parade and the bewitching “Happy HalloWishes” fireworks spectacular. For more info, visit the Magic Kingdom page on www.disneyparks.com.

Hop on a haunted hayride, visit the pumpkin patch and trick-or-treat around the zoo. There will be no boohooing at this safe, fun and not-too-scary event. www.centralfloridazoo.org Celebrate the spookiest time of year at the Orlando Science Center on October 31 from 12 - 4 p.m. The 6th Annual Spooktacular Science Extravaganza features a terrifyingly fun day of activities, including face painting, live shows, crafts and, of course, some tasty treats. Come in costume to trick-or-treat and participate in Gross Out Science activities, like dry ice and liquid nitrogen experiments, brew a batch of gooey slime or create slimy mucus. There will also be crafts and fun for the littlest pumpkins. www.osc.org Feeling Fall Please don’t hate me, but I’m not a native Floridian. Now that I think about it, probably most of you out there aren’t, either. But being from “up north” (really the Midwest), I find myself craving some fall feelings this time of year. If you’re like me, you can get your fall fix at Celebration’s Fall Festival. Filled with falling leaves every Friday and Saturday through October, this autumn-like atmosphere leaves me feeling groovy and ready for a cup of hot apple cider. www.celebrationtowncenter.com The Place to Patch I am one who “patches” every year with my girls. I’ve searched high and low for the most fall-ish rows of pumpkins out there. A little pumpkin patch in Sanlando (I love that name— Sanlando) is the most pumpkin-patchy place I’ve found since living in Florida. Offering rows and rows of pumpkins on hay bales, story time for the kids (upon group RSVP) and fun farm animal decorations, the patch at the Sanlando United Methodist Church is a real treat. Seek out more info at info@MyGymLakeMary.com. Go Green This Halloween Now, did you really think we’d do a “green” issue and NOT point out some really cool eco-friendly ways to celebrate? Mmmwaa haa haa haa. Come closer, dearie; let us share some suggestions that won’t leave you pale with fright. Believe it or not, there's actually an organization that has gained lots of national recognition, called Green Halloween. Visit it at www.greenhalloween.org for great tips on green treats and cool Green Halloween events in Florida. You can get your little Picasso to submit a design for this year’s Chico Bag, to be used (and reused) for trick or treating. Here’s a nifty gadget for your rough-housing ranger. This shake flashlight found at Giaim will guide your reckless warriors to sweets as they bop down the streets on October 31. This light is lit by shaking, uses no batteries and is shatterproof. www.giaim.com y favorite new thing I learned while researching Halloween this year was the concept of M reverse trick or treating. That’s when you go door to door with your kiddo and collect for Unicef or recycled cell phones. Trust me, the people who benefit from this cool concept are the ones who get the real treat this Halloween. www.youth.unicefusa.org/trickortreat Non-Dorky Ways to Decorate Don't scare your guests away with tacky decorations this October. No need to flood your yard with every inflatable spider or Styrofoam tombstone that you can get your claws on. Celebrations.com offers these suggestions to spook up your interior. First, cover the sofas, chairs, dining room table and all other large furniture items with old white sheets. This will give your party space an abandoned look. Second, gather fall leaves, tumbleweed and dead flowers from outdoors and place them across tables and buffets. It will look like the windows opened and leaves have blown into the abandoned house from outside. And remember, don’t let your little lovely eat her candy before you’ve thoroughly checked it, never enter houses of strangers, always use a flashlight and watch out for black cats!

Co-Owner of Dandelion Communitea Café and Natural Mama-to-Be MY NATURAL JOURNEY
Things I Love:
When I discovered I was pregnant, I settled into a blossoming “natural” mama-to-be easily. I have been on an eight-year journey of discovery and incremental lifestyle upgrades as part of my quest to live a more connected life – to friends and family, to nature and to myself. I imagine what a challenge pregnancy can be without this foundation securely in place. Learning about toxins and making lifestyle changes can be stressful at an accelerated rate. For your family's health, it is important to educate yourself and make small improvements at your own pace. A taste for quality led me to the “green” movement. I was literally drawn in by the tantalizing flavors that can only be found in food grown in harmony with our environment. In the process, I discovered that what is most nutritious for my body also appears to balance my emotions and my clarity. Throughout my pregnancy, it has been vital to nourish myself with the best quality organic and healthy food available. The few times I experienced physical and emotional turmoil can be directly linked to times when I neglected this aspect of my care.
Pregnancy Vitamin Tea Grown, harvested and prepared locally. www.amothersnaturemidwifery.com
When my older sister gave birth, I was blessed to be her birthing partner and took a series of classes with her on hypnobirthing. Then I witnessed her painless “labor” where she went within and focused so intently, it looked like she was sleeping while her cervix dilated to 10 cm. It was impressive and empowering. There was no question that I wanted to experience the natural technique of hypnobirthing, under the care of an experienced midwife and in the security of my own home. There are classes you can take in town; check the Central Florida Birth Network for information (www.centralfloridabirthnetwork.com).
LEAVING MY MARK As co-proprietor of Dandelion Communitea Café (www.dandelioncommunitea.com), an organic eco-eatery and gathering place in the heart of Orlando, I am blessed to be part of a community that is evolving towards a more connected lifestyle. In order to prosper, the café needs to be part of a larger sustainable network. This is why I co-founded Ourlando (www.ourlando.org), an organization dedicated to reconnecting this community to locally and independent businesses, organizations, fun, food and music. Front Porch Radio (www.frontporchradio.wordpress.com) is my varitey talk show where I highlight local happenings, trends and passionate people. Recently, I also began blogging about my personal journey as an “earth” mama at www.gaiamama.wordpress.com.

MY NATURAL JOURNEY For me, being a "natural mama" started before I had my daughter. As I began my own process of self-discovery, my desire to live more consciously and help the world led me to become a birth doula and a vegetarian. When I became pregnant and had my daughter, I naturally made decisions that were aligned with these beliefs. For me, though, being a natural mama goes beyond the things I might eat or use. To me, it means mothering from that intuitive place in our hearts that knows that preserving our child’s spirit is so much more important than winning a power struggle. I’m conscious about validating Luna’s feelings and treating her with respect. I admit, that as she gets further into toddlerhood, it has become increasingly more challenging to avoid those power struggles! LEAVING MY MARK The work that I do as a mother and birth professional are the most significant contributions I can make in the world. These roles present me with the opportunity and responsibility to create a more conscious world. As an active member of the Central Florida Birth Network (www.centralfloridabirthnetwork.com), this year I’ve taken on the task of coordinating our community birth fair event. Birth, Babies, & Beyond which takes place on Sept. 26 at the First Presbyterian Church in Maitland and will feature products, services and education that promote a holistic approach to birth and parenting. I am also privileged to offer lactation counseling at the pediatric office of Dr. Joseph Cannizzaro, to be a birth assistant and a doula, and to teach Birthing From Within childbirth classes in Orlando (www.reflectionoflight.net). Through my work I hope to provide women the opportunity for self-exploration during this window of immense personal growth and transformation into motherhood. WHERE I GO • Holistic Health Care: I get my well-woman checks by my midwife, Virginia Wittebort (www.essenceofchildbirth.com), who is trained and knowledgeable in women’s health. She advises me on homeopathic remedies and herbs I can take that support my health. I’ve also taken Luna to the Florida College of Integrative Medicine (www.fcim.edu), where I know her health would be looked at as a whole rather than only looking at symptoms and eliminating them at any cost. Surprisingly, it is more affordable than people might think. • Publix GreenWise Section: I love Whole Foods supermarket and go there when I can, but with a toddler, it’s not always so convenient to go exactly where I would like when I would like. I’m so thankful to know that no matter where I am, I can walk into a Publix, go straight to the GreenWise section and find healthy alternatives. I also appreciate coupons and recipes I can actually use from their GreenWise magazine. You can’t beat the free cookie and balloon, either. Hey, I don’t pretend to win ‘em all! • My Awesomely Conscious Community: I can’t say enough about surrounding yourself with health-conscious, like-minded people. Yahoo Groups like Connected Mothering and Orlando Peaceful Parents (www.groups.yahoo.com) have greatly helped me during those times when I’m just plain out of answers. I love going to the various markets (Audubon Park, Lake Eola, Serendipity Square) and group gatherings (Spiritual Knowledge Institute, Moon Lodge at Seven Sisters Coffee, Green Drinks) around town where I know I’ll connect with beautiful people that will lift my spirit and inspire me. MY NATURAL JOURNEY My husband, Aaron, and I embarked on a green lifestyle seven years ago when our daughter, Nevaeh, was born. We own and operate our own business, serving vegan hot dogs for the downtown nightlife. I am also known as the "vegan hot dog guy’s wife." Having a vegan diet requires lots of nutritional research and educating ourselves. Raising a child in a vegan lifestyle has its challenges. It’s important to us as parents to make sure that Nevaeh doesn’t feel limited or left out because her lunch is different from the kids at school or because she can’t eat dinners at grandma’s house. Birthday parties were especially difficult. We used to find out what kind of cake would be served ahead of time and make a dairy-free version similar in flavor and color so Nevaeh wouldn’t feel left out or different from the rest of the kids. Over time, we came to realize that with birthday parties being thrown every weekend, it was quite a hassle and ridiculous to do each time around! We came to a compromise that birthdays were a special treat and would let her eat the cake served at the party.

Our daughter knows and understands our reasons for not eating animal products and minimally processed foods; we have shared with her what we have learned through our research very early in her life. Growing veggies in our back yard helps our family in so many ways. We get good family time tending our garden together and learning to grow seasonal produce. It also helps Nevaeh understand where food really comes from. Most children don’t realize their food starts in the earth, not at the grocery store. LEAVING MY MARK As a family, we leave our mark mostly by supporting local businesses. We buy our music directly from musicians or Park Ave CDs (www.parkavecds.com), go to farmers' markets and attend eco events. I personally help the local green movement in creative ways: I make clothing from recycled fabric and bake vegan goodies for local coffee shop Austin’s Coffee and Film (www.austinscoffee.com). Little Nevaeh delights in donating her old toys each year to less fortunate families. She enthusiastically packs them up, singing “reuse, recycle, reduce!” WHERE I GO • Ethos Vegan Kitchen: Ethos has great vegan recipes that normally take a long time to cook, so it’s nice to sit and eat without the hassle of cooking and dishes. Our family tradition is Sunday brunch there. The atmosphere is wonderful; there is light jazz on the patio, and all of our friends join us. The pancakes are fluffy and amazing! www.ethosvegankitchen.com • Chamberlin’s Winter Park: Chamberlin’s has great vegan kids snacks and meals that go perfectly in school lunches. All their produce is organic, so I don’t have to worry about picking from conventional areas when I buy produce. Chamberlin’s only has store locations in Florida, so I can trust that their products are local and fresh. www.chamberlins.com • Lakeshore Learning Store: This is a goldmine for parents who want to be involved in their child’s learning development at home. You can even apply for a teacher’s discount as a reward for participating in your child’s education. They also have free kids crafts every Saturday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. for ages 3 and up. www.lakeshorelearning.com PLAYGROUND Fall 2009

More than Cookies The Girl Scouts have gotten a facelift.

Girl Scouts are known for cookies and camping, but this green-centered, earthloving philanthropy is way more than tents and Thin Mints. It's influencing this country's finest young women. With a recent national restructure, Girl Scouts of the USA is breaking their stagnant stereotype and becoming more relatable to modern kids and their interests. We like that each troop is completely unique and the young members drive the activites and interests they pursue. Today, scouts go rock climbing, swim with dolphins in the Florida Keys, go white water rafting and even travel abroad through troop or council programs. Depending on their interests, girls are given the opportunity to gain knowledge and acquire skills in: dance, drama, math, biology, poetry, fashion, problem solving, leadership and handling peer pressure — among countless other relevant topics. A favorite among the tween crowd is a program called “Mean Chicks.” Nope, they're not being taught to be "ugly," but rather addressing the rampant problem of gossiping and manipulating at school. The “Couch Potato” interest project gets girls exploring how youth and women are portrayed in the media.

Board Games Over Mind Games What do you get when you mix Monopoly and martinis? You get a night you’ll both be talking about for months. Described as Orlando’s alternative to the typical night out, PlayDate Orlando takes place monthly in swanky nightclubs transformed into epicenters of fun. This fall, events are hosted by Rix Lounge at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. Classic games like Trouble, Jenga, Connect Four and Yahtzee grace the tables around the club, with the dance floor reserved for rowdy Twister matches and musical chairs. www.playdateorlando.com
Useless Information Wanted Unleash your inner know-it-all during a round of Earth Trivia at various Orlando venues, such as One Eyed Jacks, Gator's Dockside and Scruffy Murphy's. This live trivial pursuit for couples or groups is divided into rounds of 10 questions, each featuring categories like movies, music, TV, science, sports and geography. The top smarties win prizes, like restaurant gift certificates. Warning: Fact-checking with KGB (text 542-542) is strongly frowned upon, but peeking at your partner’s answers is A-OK. www.earthtrivia.com
College Days Flashback Check out ICEBAR Orlando on Monday nights starting at 9 p.m. for a major trip back to your college years. Their weekly Beer Pong tournaments invite teams of two to face off for one of the most inane, yet hilarious, bar games ever invented. Oh, you're going to act like you've never played? (OK, we'll play along.) Players throw a Ping-Pong ball across a table with the hopes of landing it in a cup of beer lined up at the other end. A ball in the cup means the opposing team must drink their cup of beer. Winning teams go on to face off against their next contender. Dumb, we know, but so much fun—whether you’re winning or losing. www.icebarorlando.com
Cordial Competition Grown-ups do have their own playground, ya know; it's called Firkin & Kegler, an entertainment mega-center in Waterford Lakes. Share your time between the pub-style restaurant, 32 lanes of bowling, golf simulator and arcade (where air hockey matches become the ideal way to gamble for that evening’s late-night back massage). You’ll love the ample outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying pints of ale and the return to saner Orlando temperatures. Got a late-night pass from Grandma? Get down at Firkin’s nightclub and lounge, called "The Loft," where great music always takes center stage. www.firkinkeglercenter.com
0h-69 Get your mind out of the gutter—we’re talking bingo, but with a twist. Led by local drag legends Miss Sammy and Carol Lee, Tuesday Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s offers the chance to "eat, drink and be Mary" while enjoying an effortless pastime peppered with spirited songs and feisty comedy. This flamboyant eatery, known for its '50s flair and colorful customers, boasts 11 burger varieties with names that denote Mary’s naughty and nice personalities. We loved the slightly X-rated drink list packed with enticing libations, like the Juicy Screw and Screaming Orgasm. www.hamburgermarys-orlando.com
DIY Play Time No sitter? No problem. Tuck the kiddies into bed and then sneak off to your own bedroom for some private play. Your covert couple time can include sexy Scrabble (dirty words only), naked hide-and-seek, or strip Monopoly (pay rent with clothing). Of course, a classic round of Truth or Dare is always a sure bet when it comes to adding some sugar and spice to your liaison.

If you're thinking of dashing down to Miami without the kids, think again. LOEWS LOVES KIDS
So, maybe your Delano days are done, but that won’t stop you from doing South Beach in style. You’ll be experiencing some child-envy once you check into Loews Miami Beach and see how your little rascals are treated like major VIPs at the most family-friendly resort on the beach. Loews boasts a lending library of games and toys, a zero entry pool perfect for tots, a newly unveiled gourmet children's menu featuring PB&J sushi-esque rolls, and age-appropriate welcome gifts (toys) for every child. The Loews is obviously trying to win over those hard-to-impress types with their most impressive kid-friendly amenity yet: A portable DVD player will be served to your kids while dining, complete with their own movie pick. The Pottery Barn PBTeen Cabanas for those tweens in your life will be a pleasant surprise. Splashed with aqua and pink and filled with posh loungers and iChairs, these poolside retreats introduce your kiddos to Miami luxury. Your older kids will appreciate the poolside Wii tournaments and movies playing on the Kidbana’s flat-screen TV. We also LOVE the day and night "SoBe Kids Camp," occupying kids with Hula-Hoop contests, beach "Olympics" and sushi-making classes. Camp frees up mom and dad for hours at the beach, spa and some interruption-free moments at one of the resort's six restaurants. The Loews also invites you to bring Fido along for some major pooch pampering, such as welcome gifts, his own room service menu and puppy spa services. Leave it to this familyfocused resort to have all your travel necessities on hand, from car seats to strollers and nightlights to baby bathtubs. The Loews Miami Beach is the perfect location on the beach and within walking distance from the quintessential South Beach outdoor mall experience, Lincoln Road.

Downtown...
Mixed in with the high-rises and power-lunch eateries, Downtown Miami is also home to several clever enticements for family daytime diversions. Completely interactive and totally tactile, the Miami Children’s Museum invites kids from toddler on up to “play, learn, imagine and create.” Engaging exhibits offer a unique learning experience your kids won't forget. They'll learn how to earn, save and spend money at the “Bank,” dress up like a firefighter or police officer in the “Safety Zone,” and become a veterinarian for the day at “Pet Central.” Props to Target for sponsoring admission on "Free Third Fridays." Less than a mile away, you’ll find Jungle Island, a zoo-ish park that just introduced a "cool" new penguin encounter. This is the only place you'll see the largest crocodile in the Western Hemisphere as well as a liger, a cross between a female tiger and a male lion (seriously!). Kids and creatures strut their stuff in stage shows, interactive safaris and petting zoos where you can even feed the kangaroos. Finish your downtown experience at Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita. It's not just the name that's interesting; this candlelit and white-draped eatery is in the heart of downtown’s Mary Brickell Village, which is an adorable little outdoor shopping experience. "Dolores & Lolita" boasts a unique dining concept you, your kids and your wallet are going to love. The menu is divided into two lists of entrees, those priced at $18.75 and those priced at $23.75. You pick an entrée, and your choice of apps is included. Desserts are only $2.50, and wine starts at just $4 a glass and $13 per bottle. Best of all, your little foodies are going to love the Kobe beef mini-burgers and the bacon-wrapped chicken tenders.

The Beach... ..
Whether you’re talking South Beach or Key Biscayne, Miami rocks when it comes to an endless variety of water-logged fun. The surprisingly kid-friendly Nikki Beach Club should be number one on your "must do" list. This tropical hideaway oozes Miami chic. Morcheeba and Groove Armada tunes provide the soundtrack at this outdoor beach club, located at the most southern end of Ocean Drive. The "lounge" area includes beds, couches and teepee-style cabanas for fierce family fun. Dad will enjoy the supermodel sightings too. PLAYGROUND tip: Wear your best and leave the cooler in the car. Off-site nosh is a major faux pas. Breakfast on South Beach is practically a vacation tradition. Start the day off with breakfast at one of Ocean Drive’s famous oceanfront cafes, likely still packed with last night’s club crowd. Although it’s not technically on Ocean Drive, we still love Big Pink. Tucked into the subdued "South of 5th" district of South Beach, Big Pink offers a diner-style experience minus the lively foot traffic you find on Ocean Drive. An ample and reasonably priced menu is filled with all-day breakfast, juicy burgers and more than two dozen sandwiches. Trust us; with a menu that reads more like a novel, there is something to please every eater in your clique. After breakfast, head over to South Pointe Park, newly reopened after a $22 million facelift. Chill at the interactive splash zone, fool around at the two children’s playgrounds, stroll miles of walkway and afterwards settle in at neighboring Smith and Wollensky’s waterfront steakhouse for lunch or dinner and views of the passing cruise ships and celebrity yachts. Don’t hesitate to take in the Art Deco District Tour to give your clan the 411 on the iconic architecture that’s made South Beach such a world-renowned destination. Families that prefer to walk on the wild side flock to Key Biscayne, Miami’s favorite barrier island. Miami’s metropolis quickly becomes a distant memory in the midst of Key Biscayne’s natural wonders, especially within Crandon Park’s boarders which burst with activities that make nature lovers positively giddy. Eco-adventures, such as Half Moon Wreck Snorkeling and Moonlight Kayaking, engage and amaze your busy bees while the endless coastal dunes are the ideal locale for your beach bums. We loved that you can rent private cabanas with showers inside. On your way back across the causeway, make a pit stop at the Rusty Pelican, famous for its iconic sunset and water views afforded to every single table, inside and out. The kitchen churns out a steady selection of favorites for your youngsters (mac and cheese, cheeseburgers, fish sticks), and the outdoor fire pits provide the perfect place to chill post-meal.

Venturing out of Miami’s usual hotspots, like downtown and South Beach, is something we highly recommend. What's For Dinner
Part-Time Veg All the Rage Shirk those feelings of powerlessness over global warming. From within the debate about whether to recycle or whether to drive a hybrid car emerges an easy and impactful way to effect change today. Written by Kristen Manieri MEATLESS MONDAY
TUESDAY
WEDNESDAY
THURSDAY
FRIDAY
We know it’s not headline news to tell you the health benefits of eating less meat and more vegetables. And while most of us know that we need to up our fruit and veggie intake, embracing vegetarianism seems so, well, hard. Going "veg" simply isn’t practical or appealing to a lot of modern families. That’s okay, our herbivore-hesitant friends; a new trend is sweeping the community that could make even the biggest fruit-phobic family jump on board.
Flexitarianism: A semi-vegetarian diet focusing on vegetarian food with occasional meat consumption. A self-described flexitarian seeks to decrease meat consumption without eliminating it entirely from his or her diet.
Flexitarianism describes a growing population of people with a loose loyalty to meat-free eating. This semi-vegetarian diet with occasional meat consumption gives me and my family the focus of eating healthier, while allowing the freedom to devour a scrumptious Houston’s burger from time to time. While the health benefits of decreased meat and increased roughage are well-known (lower cholesterol, for example), few people realize the environmental impact of going meatless, even for just one meal each week. Hence the motivation behind "Meatless Monday," a national nonprofit on a mission to help reduce American meat consumption by 15 percent. According to Chris Elam, editor of www.MeatlessMonday.com, scientists estimate that if every American lowered meat consumption by just 15 percent (about once a week), greenhouse gases would decrease as much as if we all switched to hybrid cars. Additionally, they project that if we all went meatless on Monday for one year, we would save 12 billion gallons of gasoline and enough water to fill up our bathtubs 22 times each week. We know you’re thinking, "But I’ve spent the last five years fighting to get my wee one to eat meat. Can this really be healthy for him?" Of course! We’d never steer you wrong. In fact, Dr. Susan Mitchell, licensed nutritionist, Orlando resident and author of three books about healthy eating (www.susanmitchell.org), says, “We are a country where meat at mealtime has always filled more than half the plate.” According to Meatless Monday, Americans consume about 8 ounces of meat each day. Wow, that’s 45 percent more than the USDA recommends and twice the global average. "Typically, neither kids nor adults eat enough vegetables, particularly now that the CDC recommends five to nine servings per day. Going meatless once or twice a week can be a good way to lower both the weekly grocery bill and the saturated fat in our diet, plus increase consumption of beans, vegetables and whole grains,” continues Dr. Mitchell. So, Meatless Monday improves kids' health and lets you take a night off from the protein power struggle. Added bonus!
Wondering how you’ll get your little monkey to love her legumes? Pam Brandon, Winter Park resident and co-author of Culinary Confessions of the PTA Divas, gathered years of recipes used at PTA meetings, compiling them into one nifty little cookbook packed with helpful tips and crazy cooking confessions. “You have to make your meatless night delicious,” says Pam. “That way no one even notices what’s missing.” We suggest trying a few recipes from her cookbook, such as the Very Veggie Tacos and Japanese Noodle Nosh, proven favorites with her kids.

5-Star Kids' Docs Laura Owens
The doctors and dentists that Central Florida parents are buzzing about. Besides you, your spouse and maybe Grandma, there are few you trust to take care of your precious peanuts when they get owwie ears or dental dings. We know every parent has her pediatric particulars, but when we asked for your faves, there seemed to be some that stood out from the rest. Here’s your "love list" of parent-approved pediatricians and pediatric dentists in Central Florida. PLAYGROUND Fall 2009

Pediatrician Particulars
Choosing a pediatrician is like checking out Babies 'R' Us for the first time; you might have mega choices, but you won’t know what you really need until you become a parent. Craving a straight-talking doc who tells you breast is best? An old-schooler who's been-there-seen-that? Maybe you want a warm and fuzzy personality who keeps her personal opinions on the down low? Central Florida's pediatric practices have a personality to fit every parent. Here are a few of your favorites.
A Doc for Every Parenting Personality With 11 doctors and four nurse practitioners, Interlachen Pediatrics definitely has a pediatrician to fit any parent's values and priorities. Maybe you can spare the guilt trip on formulafeeding, or maybe you’re looking for some support on the nocircumcision front. You’ll find a pediatrician here that supports your decision. It seems that this practice has thought of everything to help ease a parent’s bustling life: a separate newborn waiting room, a walk-in sick hour, extended hours and online appointment scheduling. Nervous, expectant moms and dads are catered to during a prenatal open house that includes a tour of the office and a Q&A session with a few of the pediatricians. Offices located in Maitland and Oviedo. 407-767-2477 www.intpeds.com
"
I like that there are so many personalities of doctors. If you want to stop nursing or continue longer, there’s a doctor that - Hollie Maule, Orlando supports you.
"
Home-Style Care with Big City Service One step inside Windermere Pediatrics, and you will immediately sense a cool, child-friendly vibe. This practice prides itself on making your entire experience positive. They even remind parents to bring their list of never-ending quirky questions to each visit. Terrified tots forget their fears when mesmerized by themed exam rooms like the “Trains and Planes” or “Surf's Up.” Get this, all four docs are bilingual, which clearly opens the door for that extra special connection with your scared Suzie (or Selena). Compassionate care, buckets of sanitized toys and a “pick-apop” at the end remind parents that exceptional pediatric care and hometown hospitality aren’t a thing of the past. What to Expect When You Go to the Doctor by Heidi Murkoff This adorable puppy takes your child’s hand and guides him through a typical visit to the doctor. Passionate Pursuit of Personal Care A direct, straight-talking guy, Dr. Lacy of TLC Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine prioritizes one-on-one attention for every patient in his practice. Known for his vast knowledge and dedication, this guy ventured away from a large peds practice in pursuit of creating the kind of doctor's office he and his wife would want for their kids—an office where everyone knows your name. Working together with Dr. Elias, and a highly committed staff, this pediatric place offers the individual continuity of care parents crave. Following up personally with many of his more seriously ill patients and their parents, Dr. Lacy is known to take calls day or night, weekdays or weekends. Whether chatting with toddlers or shooting the breeze with teens, Dr. Lacy’s attitude encourages patients to share their concerns and their confidences. East Orlando 407-380-9115 www.tlc.yourmd.com

I would go to no one other than Dr. Thomas Lacy. The attention he gives his patients is exceptional.

Open Hearts and Open Minds Picky parents know knowledge is power and peace of mind. With their mission statement, “To empower the lives we touch through education of mind, body and spirit,” The Franz Center P.A. offers outside-of-the-box health solutions. Using an integrated approach, Dr. Franz and her team combine state-of-the-art Western medicine with alternative practices such as craniosacral therapy or herbal remedies to keep little bodies healthy. Vacillating over vaccination schedules? The center offers "Immunizations: Making an Informed Decision," a class focused on equipping parents for navigation through that scary, and often confusing, decision. Author of Common Sense Pediatrics: Combining Alternative and Traditional Medicine in Everyday Practice, Dr. Franz and her two partners present open-minded options to parents interested in exploring the many facets of general and special needs pediatric care. A Dose of Dr. Wiest Makes the Medicine Go Down Dr. Karyn Wiest of Physician Associates in Oviedo instantly puts patients and parents at ease with her personal, compassionate care and natural bedside manner. Known for following up with parents by a phone call after sick appointments, Dr. Wiest and her staff always take the time to make families feel valued and supported. Whether she’s tickling your son while completing the physical assessment or talking to mom and dad in clear language they’ll really understand, Dr. Wiest has a gift for making her youngest patients (and most nervous parents) relax and walk away feeling a little less worried. Tips from Dr. Aletha Solter, Ph.D., on how to minimize your child's anxiety about doctor visits: Helpful Doctor Tip #1
Helpful Doctor Tip #2
Role-play with your kids before appointments to get them familiar with what to expect. Use toys like a stethoscope or thermometer.
Let children express emotional and physical pain. Acknowledge their feelings without minimizing them.
Helpful Doctor Tip #3 Give children choices to reduce feelings of powerlessness, like asking them to choose which finger to prick for a blood test.

Dental Details
Let’s face it, from the onset of teething to well past the time of the Tooth Fairy, few of us look forward to visiting the dentist. Some parents might prefer to put the whole experience off until their kids hit puberty. But never fear, these pediatric dentists will put your mind at ease. With reputations that overshadow the professional stereotype, there’s nothing intimidating about these dental dynamos.
The Dentist Adults Wish They Could Visit
"
One disastrous teeth cleaning can turn the dentist into the big bad boogeyman with any kid. Dr. Michael Marfori and his staff make even the worst tooth terrors a distant memory. A waiting room with a game system on one side and an adult-friendly TV lounge on the other keeps worried wee ones and anxious adults preoccupied. Televisions above exam chairs and a gold token for kids to redeem in a “treasure tower” are icing on the cake. Too bad Dr. Marfori only treats minors; from what we hear, this guy’s so loved by reformed dental-phobes and their parents, adults might start lying about their age just to get a visit in his chair. Hunter's Creek 407-859-1418 www.drmarfori.com
My son was so scared to go to the dentist, it was difficult to take him. The staff and doctor were so nice and gentle, as we left my son said, "Mommy, I'm not scared anymore.

Walk the Plaque ... We Mean Plank Fun is the theme in this nautical treasure trove called Dentistry for Children. Their you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it boating playland lets little ones huddle inside a wooden ship to watch a flick or navigate in the video game room. With Dr. King’s 10 kids and Dr. Donald's four, these dental dads can make any child smile big and healthy. Dental-phobes will have smooth sailing as hygienists nickname scary instruments (i.e., "Mr Squirt") and explain exactly what they're doing, then they go in to "tickle your teeth." From the warm staff to the friendly “chair-side” manner of both dentists, no one is ever too busy to offer a genuine smile. Adding to their captain status, Dr. King is one of only 2,000 practitioners in the country to achieve Diplomat status with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry AND Fellow status with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. These dentists are sure to sail in, save the day and leave your little matey with a treasure of a grin. Oviedo 407-977-9990 www.pediatricdentistorlando.com
"
I like the fact that the staff speaks to the child instead of just to the adults. The kids are the patients and need to feel included and important. - Chris Wright, Waterford Lakes

How Does the Tooth Fairy Rate?
68
Well, we’ll say this—it seems Ms. Fairy has not been affected by the recent recession. In fact, this dazzling diva has a very generous pocketbook these days. Our fairy friend typically gives Central Florida's toothless tykes $5 for the first tooth and $1 for the rest of those cute pearly moneymakers. Does anyone remember when all we got was a quarter? PLAYGROUND Fall 2009
Down-to-Earth Dentist is Totally Rad with Kids A beachy laid-back “dental dude,” Dr. White high-fives kids as he enters the room. Even cautious ones will chill after they soak in the surf theme at Lake Mary Pediatric Dentistry; they'll feel like they’ve stepped into Ron Jon’s playhouse. Community-minded, Dr. White makes a point of teaching kids how to get terrific teeth when he visits area schools during Dental Health Month. Kid-like, yet highly committed, he makes going to the dentist a breeze. Get ready to hang 10 or even 20, because this guy will kick back with families for as long as it takes to get everyone to that peaceful, easy feeling. From the front lobby to the bright, "surf's up" exam areas, Dr. White and his staff’s easy island attitude gives kids a sea of healthy and happy smiles. Lake Mary 407-942-0225 www.lakemarypediatricdentistry.com

Hi Tech + High Quality = Happy Hip-Huggers
Are thoughts of taking little Jasper to the dentist giving you the jitters? No worries. Dr. Chaudhry and the staff at Orlando Pediatric Dentistry will erase all dental doubts. Boasting an arcade, cartoons and a super cool tooth-shaped Sega center, this high-tech haven is so fun, kids won’t want to leave. You too can ease your worries while chilling out in your own parents lounge. Dr. Chaudhry’s paperless processing lets you register online, cutting time, hassle and errors. Kids forget the scare during exams while donning fun shades and watching TV. No need to text your tot to see what’s going on during the process; you’re welcome to stand nearby throughout the whole interface. Even though new age seems to be the theme here, have no fear, Dr. Chaudhry would never overlook personal care. His huge heart and calm nature extend to patients of all ages and needs. This is the first time my son ever loved going to the dentist. [My son] couldn't get over how nice [the dentist] was. The hygienist was super gentle.

Family-Focused, Family-Friendly
Even if you just drop in unannounced for a tour, you will be greeted with a warm smile at the office of Dr. Jason Sotto, DMD. Not only will Dr. Sotto delay his lunch to give you a run-through of what’s to be expected, he may even offer a disposable dental tool to help you prepare your 3 year old for her visit. His office, of course, has all the staples the kids are looking for: cool games, toddler celebrity dentist books (Dora goes to the dentist, you know the kind), Nintendo games and (the kids' fave) movies playing on flat screens over those super cute pint-sized chairs. But it is his attention to a parent’s concerns that will make your inaugural pediatric dental visit a shining success. Dr. Sotto and his staff may be new to the Winter Garden area, but they are certainly not new to relating with kids and treating them, well, like family. Winter Garden 407-347-5956 www.DrSotto.com
"
My husband took my daughter to have a crown put on. It went very well. He was very impressed with the whole office and how it's geared - Teresa, Winter Garden towards kids (especially the TVs!).
Helpful Fairy Tip #1
Kids like loot, right? Well, instead of leaving just one simple, uneventful fiver, sometimes our fluttering fairy lugs in 20 quarters or 50 dimes. Now that’s a treasure!
"
Helpful Fairy Tip #2
Make sure to look really close—often she leaves her sparkly mark. (Psst! ... baby powder and glitter ... if you get our drift.)
Helpful Fairy Tip #3
When little Gracie asks what happens with all those teeth, tell her that she gives them to the babies without any yet. Look at that, even the Tooth Fairy recycles! PLAYGROUND Fall 2009

The Mommy Measure This oh-so-cute milestone ribbon and journal creates a unique timeline of your pregnancy experiences as a keepsake in your child’s baby book. Local, hip parents came up with the fabulous idea while pregnant with their second child (they sure wish they had had it for their first). Now you can keep track of the first time you heard that pitter-patter of the heartbeat and other milestones right on the ribbon. www.mommymeasure.com

After surgery, she spent one night in the hospital. And 90 years in pursuit of her dreams.
The heroes at Florida Hospital for Children are working hard to make sure the heroes of tomorrow live a long and healthy life. Three of our heroes include board-certified minimally invasive surgeons for children, Dr. Christopher Anderson, Dr. W. Raleigh Thompson, and Dr. Bryan Weidner. They specialize in some cutting edge procedures such as thoracoscopy, a method used to remove potentially dangerous tissue from the chest of a developing baby in order to prevent infection or even cancer. Their techniques allow a faster recovery, so your child gets back to acting like a kid sooner. With the expertise of these doctors and our entire staff you can feel confident that your child is in good hands. And they can get back to fulfilling their dreams of what they want to be when they grow up. That’s Florida Hospital’s goal and just a small part of what we’re doing to help the members of our community live to a healthy 100 years old.
What do you want to do when you’re 100?
