PUBLISHER'S NOTE Seeing my kids off to their first day of kindergarten and middle school.

Never Stop Learning I hope your school year is off to a great start. I have a kindergartener and middle schooler who are both attending a new school together. The transition has been smooth for one and rough for the other. Day by day, we're settling in to our new routine and community. It's almost starting to feel normal. Almost. I may need another month.

Watch for Our Halloween Giveaway Online!

With education on my mind, I'm excited to share the brainy articles our team has produced. We invited local guest writers to join us for this issue. Emily Bose from Emmabean shares her tips for a healthy lunch on page 14. Dr. Nabi from Your Downtown Dentistry offers insights on how to prep your child for his or her first dentist visit on page 16. Esther Grillo from Cranium Academy gives advice on how to encourage critical thinking at home on page 22. On page 24, Angela Browning shares how she fought to make recess mandatory in our public schools and won!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays — ever. I love seeing all the creative and unique costumes that parents (and kids!) come up with each year. Check our Facebook page for a chance to win free tickets to the best family attractions by sharing a photo your family's Halloween costumes. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

You'll find our always-fun kids' fashion story shot on location at the Orlando Science Center on page 29. Plus, our handy-dandy Enrichment PLAYguide offers a list of the best extracurricular resources in Orlando. We're excited to kick off the new school year with all of you! I'm frequently reminded how lucky we are to live in the greater Orlando area. This place is packed full of unique educational opportunities for our children. Here are four unique educational programs I love! 1. Common Sewing

3. YEA! Orlando

My friends are raving about Common Sewing, a fantastic new business that teaches sewing and fashion to students of all ages. After-school classes and camps are available. Check out their Mom & Me workshop schedule at commonsewing.com.

The Orlando Science Center hosts the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA). It's an exciting program where middle and high schoolers can participate in a year-long incubator program that supports young entrepreneurs. YEA kids create and develop real businesses with the help of professional community mentors. The program meets after school at the Orlando Science Center (osc.org).

2. Ambassador at O2B Kids This is a fantastic leadership program for kids (ages 8 to 13), where they'll learn so many life skills. This is a three-level program that allows kids to become trained O2B Kids Ambassadors. This job isn't taken lightly. My friend's daughter was an Ambassador, and she worked in the retail shop, helped with inventory, worked in the cafĂŠ and baked cookies, worked at the front desk, shadowed employees and helped teach classes. The Ambassadors even get to help interview prospective new hires. It's a pretty great program! Visit O2Bkids.com for more information.

8

PLAYGROUND SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2017

4. Tinkergarten This is a nature-based educational program for children (ages 18 months to 8) and their parents to participate in play-based discovery and intrinsic learning outdoors. It's great for all children but particularly fitting for active children who like to get dirty, explore and interact with the world around them. Currently, there are classes available in Kissimmee, Winter Park, Windermere and Winter Garden. For class times and locations, visit tinkergarten.com/classes/all/florida/orlando.

New Field Trip Options Update the field trip schedule at your child's school with these new opportunities to play and learn in our community: ROLLER SKATING PHYSICS: Astro Skate Family Fun Center (astroskatingcenter.com) in East Orlando is now offering STEM fieldtrip opportunities. Yes, you read that correctly — a skating rink that’s offering educational field trips geared toward science, technology, engineering and math. Plus, the students and teachers get to skate too! A certified teacher will present a lesson customized for grades 1 to 8. Each lesson meets Common Core and Sunshine State standards for STEM subjects. Lessons include activities such as creating pictographs, testing the friction of different surfaces, measuring distance and determining how mass impacts velocity. To plan your customized fieldtrip, contact Missy at missy@astroskatingcenter.com.

COOKING UP EDUCATION: Create the true farm-to-table experience and teach about sustainability at the Emeril Lagasse Foundation Kitchen House and Garden (edibleed.org) in Central Florida. Your school and family can attend classes, work in the garden or attend camp throughout the year. Almost every Sunday, families and small groups are invited to work in the gardens. Each work session includes gardening and harvesting instruction and testing recipes made from produce grown on-site. Schools and homeschool groups can schedule customized visits that include instruction in science, cooking, geography, math, history and nutrition. Another option is to attend the once-a-month Chef Night, which features culinary instruction and a tasting of dishes featuring the produce grown on-site.

It’s Lice Season Well, the truth is that it’s always lice season. But lice outbreaks are more common during the academic year simply because children are in close contact with one another. To help prevent a lice outbreak, Pigtails & Crewcuts offers Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel shampoo and crème conditioner for use every other day or every third day and leave-in conditioner for daily use. The rosemary scent helps repel lice. Pigtails & Crewcuts also carries a Fairy Tales Lice Good-Bye Survival Kit, which includes a natural lice treatment, the Terminator Nit-Free metal lice removal comb and a 4-ounce bottle of the Rosemary Repel leave-in conditioner. For a location near you, visit pigtailsandcrewcuts.com.

Great Idea! Homework Happy Hour Got a few hours between school and after-school activities but not enough time to get home? We got wind of some Lake Highland Prep moms who do "Homework Happy Hour" with their kids. Parents and kids gather at a local restaurant to grab a quick bite. While the kiddos get their homework done, the moms get to socialize. It’s a win-win! We recommend: DoveCote in downtown Orlando (they just partnered with Foxtail Coffee!) or Create Your Nature in Winter Park (super yummy acai bowls and fresh snacks).

Your Just in Case Specialists Let’s face it: sometimes accidents happen. When your child has an orthopaedic injury, count on the dedicated team of fellowship trained orthopaedic experts at Orlando Orthopaedic Center to help get your child back laughing, playing and smiling as quickly as possible.

Community Partnerships WonderWorks partnered with the Park Maitland School to reward students for their hard work on STEM educational projects. Park Maitland (parkmaitland.org) designed a STEM program that expands the way their students explore a different area of science each year starting from first grade. By sixth grade, students can explore what they are passionate about and present their idea at the school’s own Science Expo. During the process of creating their prototypes, students connect with field experts, including surgeons, lawyers, bloggers, local business owners, and even Google employees, to perfect their ideas and then present them. Last April, Park Maitland’s sixth grade students who placed first in their category presented their projects to guests at WonderWorks (wonderworksonline.com). Presentations covered a bold spectrum of ideas, such as 3D glasses that dissolve color blindness, all-natural skincare made for those allergic to sunscreen and a shatter-proof shipping container used to send food to military families. Participants and their families enjoyed spending the day at this amusement park for the mind.

DEMOCRATIC SCHOOL NOW IN ORLANDO Think Cherry Tree (thinkcherrytree.com) is an innovative option for K–12 education. As of the 2017–2018 school year, this alternative learning environment now offers the first full-time Sudbury education model in Central Florida. A Sudbury school is another name for a democratic school, which is where the kids and teachers decide, through a democratic process, what they will study. It's very progressive and a little mind blowing. If you're looking for a unique learning environment for your kids, check this place out!

Pack a Healthy Lunch Punch Emmabean's 10 Healthy Lunch Recommendations Baldwin Park mom, Emily Bose (mother of three), and Jessica Tantalo are the owners of Emmabean, a boutique food service that's changing how Central Florida families eat on the go and at home. Emily's three boys happily taste-test every kids’ meal before it goes to market. Emmabean caters fresh and healthy lunchboxes delivered to local schools as well as boutique events for your next special occasion.

Jessica and Emily Owners of Emmabean

EGGS ALL AROUND. Eggs are a great source of protein and energy and can be prepared in so many different ways that you’re sure to find one that appeals to your little one. Try hard-boiled eggs, egg salad, cool scrambled egg burritos or a mini frittata for some on-the-go options.

CRAZY FOR QUESADILLAS. These cheese sandwiches are every kid’s favorite and still yummy at room temperature. Add a protein like chicken or beans along with your favorite salsa and sliced avocado on the side to round out the meal.

LET THE MARKET DECIDE. Head out to your local farmers market with the kiddos and let them choose an in-season food item to include in their lunch. After visiting the farmers market over the weekend, you can involve the kids in lunch preparation on Sunday night. This a perfect for Monday lunch! Encourage the kids to think up some of their own creations.

SUPER SUBS. According to my son Coco, sandwiches can be boring. The best way to spruce them up is to turn a sandwich into a sub! Let the kids pick out the protein, toppings and condiments themselves for guaranteed awesomeness.

BREAKFAST FOR LUNCH. Who doesn’t love breakfast any time of day? Try mini pancakes with yogurt dipping sauce and a side of fruit — yum! Just whip up some extra pancakes the next time you make Sunday breakfast and pop them in the freezer for the next quick school lunch.

3 Tips for Heart-Healthy School Lunches

FRUIT SMOOTHIES. Double your favorite morning smoothie and fill your child’s insulated container for a nutritious lunch. Pair with a half nut butter (SunButter is fantastic and peanut-free) and honey sandwich or pita triangles and cheese for a larger lunch. PLAY TIP: Include a fun reusable straw!

LOVELY LEFTOVERS. Sometimes it just needs to be easy. If they liked it for dinner, chances are they will like it for lunch.

GRAIN BOWLS. Start with your favorite grain, such as rice, quinoa or couscous, and let the topping begin — think roasted veggies, legumes and grilled chicken. Finish it off with a salsa or ranch dressing on the side.

From Florida Hospital's Pediatric Cardiologists

GRILL MASTER. Are you having a barbecue this weekend? Throw on a couple extra drumsticks, and you’re all set. They’re easy to eat and delicious hot or cold. Throw in corn-on-thecob and a seasonal fruit to round out the lunch.

SOUP IT UP. Prepare a big batch of your family’s favorite chili or chicken noodle soup over the weekend. Use an insulated container to pack soup for a healthy lunch. You can also freeze leftover soup for an easy meal later.

Learn more about Emmabean's seasonal, organically focused school lunch delivery service and event catering at emmabeanorlando.com.

1. Start with a good breakfast. How is a good breakfast the first tip for a heart-healthy lunch you ask? Well, if your child skips breakfast, they’ll be more prone to snacking and crave unhealthy food options. Starting the school day with a nutritious breakfast will lead to healthier lunch choices. Try oatmeal, eggs, fruit or whole grain toast, bagel or English muffin. 2. Make food fun. No, you don't have to make Pinterestworthy creations that take forever. Just give your kids a heart-healthy surprise in their lunchbox. Think cut-up veggies and fruits with dips, such as low-fat plain yogurt or peanut butter. Switch up sandwiches with sliced apples instead of lettuce or hummus instead of mayo. Or, let your kiddo assemble a yogurt parfait with berries and granola. 3. Get your child involved. We know the idea of taking your child(ren) to the grocery store can be daunting, and, of course, it is faster if you pack lunch yourself. But if your child is involved in the process of selecting and preparing the food, they are more likely to eat it. Isn't that worth the extra time and energy? Think of it as more family bonding time with a heart-healthy twist.

LIVE The Not-So-Scary

Dentist Prep Tips for Kids

Taking your child to the dentist shouldn’t be, well, like pulling teeth. Here are nine tips for drama-free dental appointments. Words by Dr. Mandana Nabizadeh, DDS You child’s first dental exam is an important first step in ensuring your child’s overall dental health. How parents frame that first exam makes all the difference when it comes to how much anxiety your child may have when it comes to future visits. Parents should schedule that first dentist appointment by the time their child turns 1 year old. Creating that early relationship allows a dentist to grow with the child and allows parents to learn about the habits and diet essential for good oral hygiene.

HERE ARE MY TIPS: 1.

Find a smile. Visit a few pediatric dental offices to find the best fit for your child. The office should be friendly and soothing to your child.

2.

Attitude matters. Parents, if you’re anxious about the visit, your children will be anxious too. Project confidence and a feeling that this is a positive event. Doing so is contagious and soothing to your children.

3.

Talk to the older siblings. Speak with older siblings about how to frame a visit to the dentist. Don’t allow them to offer unnecessary information to the younger ones.

4.

Keep chatter to a minimum. Many parents make the mistake of overselling the dentist. Don’t talk about it too much. Be casual about it. At the same time, prepare your child by telling them a few things that will happen, such as, “The dentist will count your teeth and show you how to brush.”

5.

Don’t make promises. Don’t make any promises about shots or pain. That sets children up for a lifetime of dental distrust and unrealistic expectations. A first visit should not be painful or require shots; however, what children find painful is subjective.

6.

Start early. Start daily dental hygiene early. Teach children the parts of the mouth when you’re teaching them about the body.

7.

Be comfortable. On the day of the appointment, dress children in comfortable clothing. One idea: have your child pick out a “going to the dentist” outfit that he or she is excited to wear.

8.

Schedule appropriately. One mistake I see happening all the time is that parents schedule dental appointments right before lunch or during nap time. If you can avoid that, I recommend it. Tired children equal cranky children, and the appointment will be more difficult for everyone.

9.

Read and play. There are several books you can read to your child before the appointment. Some good ones are “Just Going to the Dentist,” by Mercer Mayer; “Peppa Pig Dentist Trip,” Scholastic Readers; “Going to the Dentist” by Anne Civardi; and “Brush, Brush, Brush,” by Alicia Padron. Or, try the Monster Mouth DDS smartphone app that’s super funny (and a little yucky!) and offers comical lessons in dental hygiene.

Remember, children mirror your behavior. If you’re anxious, they’ll be anxious. If you just relax and make brushing a part of your children’s everyday schedule, your child’s first dental appointment will be a breeze — for both of you!

Dr. Mandana Nabizadeh, DDS, known to her patients as Dr. Nabi, attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned her D.D.S. degree in general dentistry. Since then, she’s earned two certificates from the prestigious mini-residency programs at the University of Florida and the University of Indiana. She has also completed a two-year course in the orthodontics field and familiarized herself with the detailed aspects of early orthodontic treatment. Working with children is her passion, and she loves putting smiles on their faces. She specializes in working with pediatric dental patients in the downtown Orlando-based pediatric practice Your Downtown Dentistry (yourdowntowndentistry.com). Dr. Nabi is married to Dr. Ali Behzadi and has a young daughter, Melody.

Date Night Is in Session 5 Educational Experiences for Couples Words by Stephanie Patterson

Your days as a student may be long gone, but educational experiences are plentiful throughout the city, even for date night. Trade the cap and gown for your date night best, and hit the town to revisit your favorite school subjects — grown-up style.

Science

SCIENCE NIGHT LIVE AT ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER Several times throughout the year, the Orlando Science Center (osc. org/science-night-live) opens its doors after hours for an evening of adults-only fun. Check out the grounds (kid-free!) as you sip on adult beverages, play trivia, explore exhibits and attend guest presentations. Tickets are $15.95 per person or free if you’re already a member.

Art History

WINTER PARK ART TOUR Spend an hour wandering through the Morse Museum (morsemuseum.org) on Park Avenue marveling at stained glass, lamps, jewelry and a chapel interior designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. There’s also an impressive collection of American art to peruse. Admission is regularly $6 but is free on Friday nights from from 4-8 p.m. (November through April). Continue on to the free guided art tour at The Alfond Inn (thealfondinn.com) offered every Sunday at 1 p.m., or visit the Cornell Fine Arts Museum (rollins.edu/cornell-fine-arts-museum) on the Rollins College campus (also free).

GAME TIME The couple that plays together stays together! Head to WhirlyDome (whirlydome.com) on I-Drive to learn a new game: WhirlyBall. The game is a fun combination of basketball, hockey and jai-alai played while zooming around the court on a bumper car-esque vehicle. The 10-minute game ($8 per person) will fly by as you attempt to score as many points as possible, likely while laughing uncontrollably. Celebrate your victory at the on-site pub and eatery, or continue the fun with a game of laser tag.

LOVE MOMPRENEUR

Hitting a

High Note

Holly Lesnick’s award-winning Kindermusik program is music to our ears. Words by Lisa A. Beach | Photo by Erin Monroe

I

n 2005, with a 6-week-old son and a 3-year-old daughter, Orlando mom Holly Lesnick kept a busy schedule packed with naptimes, feedings and playdates. You’d think launching a new business wouldn’t be a high priority for this new mom. But Holly’s kids, Aiden and Anna, were instrumental in her decision to launch Grow and Sing Studios in Orlando that year.

…You’ve got to balance family, work and self. Self has to go into the equation”

Holly had been going to a local Kindermusik studio where she fell in love with this research-based music-and-movement program for early learners. Understanding the connection between music and learning, Holly loved this program’s whole-child development approach.

“We wanted to serve the community and go where the need was,” Holly says. This philosophy served her well, especially during the recession. When other brick-and-mortar shops were closing, her program grew because it wasn’t tied to a physical location.

So, Holly was thrilled when, in 2002, the studio owner offered her a position as a Kindermusik educator. Holly aced the training and taught for three years, finding joy in the weekly sessions that helped families bond over singing, dancing and playing musical instruments together.

Flash forward to 2017, when Grow & Sing Studios just earned the Conductor’s Circle Maestro Award for the 10th year in a row. This prestigious award recognizes Holly’s program as one of the top 1 percent of Kindermusik programs among 5,000 programs worldwide. Now in nine locations across Central Florida, Grow & Sing Studios has served nearly 3,000 families since 2005.

But in 2005, the studio owner moved and closed up shop, which gave Holly the blues (these music puns are just too easy!). Instead of lamenting the loss of a great music program, Holly decided to fill the void by launching Grow & Sing Studios. “I selfishly started the company because I had nowhere else to take my kids,” explains Holly, an early childhood specialist with a degree in music therapy. Without the power of social media back then, Holly relied on wordof-mouth to get families jazzed about her new business. Initially, she offered two sold-out classes to 24 families. Her husband, Will, eventually came on board, along with four other licensed educators.

Together, these traveling minstrels took Kindermusik to malls, churches and community groups throughout the area.

With growth comes the delicate act of balancing it all. “You have to know when to stop and say, 'That’s enough. I’m done with this today, and now it’s family time',” Holly points out. “You’ve got to balance family, work and self. Self has to go into the equation.” Following her own advice, Holly created a meditation room in her house where she practices yoga, meditates and journals. Ending on a high note, Holly reflects, “Do what fills you up with joy.” Visit growandsing.com for details about Holly’s Kindermusik programs and for more information about a free preview class.

Keeping Children Curious Encourage Critical Thinking

Words by Esther Grillo, Director of Cranium Academy You make sure your kids stay hydrated and well fed. But what about your child’s thirst for learning? A child’s need to learn never ends. Children are naturally curious. Did you know that all of those questions, which may try your patience at times, are actually making your child smarter? Curiosity is the desire to learn more and look for evidence. It also means being open to new ideas. Experts often say curiosity is the driving force of intellect and the start of critical thinking. Encouraging Critical Thinking We hear about critical thinking often. So what does it mean, and how can it help your child? Critical thinking involves a number of different skills that help us learn to make decisions. It allows us to evaluate information to figure out whether it is right or wrong. To think critically about a problem means to be open-minded and consider different ways of looking at solutions. And it may be one of the most important skills that today's children need for the future. So can children as young as preschoolers be taught critical thinking? Lisa Brown, curriculum and training director at Cranium Academy, says YES, and most experts agree. “Critical thinking starts with curiosity. Whether it’s learning how to do something new, how to react to a friend, or whether or not to listen to a teacher, children face opportunities to solve problems and use their judgment every day,” says Brown. As they grow, their critical thinking skills will help them make judgments on their own, independently of parents or peers. According to Brown, “Children can be taught in a way that encourages curiosity and discovery, allowing them to comprehend what they are learning so they are able to apply it to real-world situations.” Take the scientific method, for example. Traditional teaching methods might have kids memorize each step, then move on. “To encourage critical thinking in our students, we learn why scientists make observations, then use each of our five senses to observe grapes as a class. How do they look, smell and taste? Do they make any sounds? What would happen if we squeezed one? Working through each step of the scientific method in a fun way helps to ensure children comprehend and retain what they are learning,” says Brown.

TIPS TO REINFORCE CRITICAL THINKING AT HOME: If you don’t think your child’s school is encouraging critical thinking, then it will be even more important for you to work on these skills at home. Here are some tips to help: • Start early. Preschoolers may not be ready for formal logic, but they can learn to give reasons for their conclusions and evaluate the reasons that they are given. • Give explanations. Avoid telling kids to do things a certain way without explaining why. • Encourage questions. We all know kids love asking questions! Foster their curiosity. If something doesn’t make sense to them, encourage them to ask questions about it. • Don’t give them answers. Rather than giving children answers to all questions, ask them: “What do you think?” or “How would you solve this problem?” • Ask kids to consider different solutions. Many problems have multiple solutions. Considering different solutions may help children become flexible thinkers who are more likely to think ‘outside of the box. If we can encourage a child’s natural curiosity, we can inspire the next generation of leaders and critical thinkers!

The Recess Bill — Passed!

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2017

EDITORIAL FEATURE

A first-hand account of how two Orlando moms drummed up support to pass Florida legislation requiring a 20-minute daily recess for most public elementary schools. Words by Angela C. Browning In 2014, when my twin boys (Zachary and Declan, now 11) were in second grade, they would come home from a full day of school crying that the day was too long. They had little time in the day to rest, relax, socialize and play with friends. Their excitement for school was disappearing. There's a short window of time to instill a love of learning in children, and I was afraid the window was going to close for my boys. In one of our conversations, I asked if they were excited to play at recess. They told me they didn't get recess every day anymore, only on non-physical education (PE) days. That meant recess only once or twice a week. I was not OK with that. They were only 8 years old. Some of my best childhood memories took place on the playground during recess. I wanted my boys to have those memories. I wanted to fix this problem before it was too late for them, and so that my youngest son (Noah, now 7) wouldn't experience the same thing.

Waiting for someone else to solve our problem wasn't working, so Amy and I joined forces to bring back recess to our schools. Along the way, many other parents joined our mission. Although our children had their daily recess reinstated relatively quickly, we pressed forward because we knew that every child across the district (and eventually statewide) was worthy of the daily break that had been restored for our own kids. Simply put, we were willing to dedicate our time and resources to advocating for our children. Because not every parent is able to do that, we felt a responsibility to keep fighting for their children too.

High Stakes Testing We immediately discovered what happened to recess: testing. The stakes attached to the tests are high – for districts, for schools, for teachers and for our children. As a result, a quantity over quality philosophy is often taken when it comes Around the same time, my friend Amy Narvaez to instruction and test preparation, overloading became concerned as well. Her girls were in schedules and adding mandatory expectations second grade and kindergarten. Her youngest on top of the State’s requirements. Recess slowly child wasn't coming home telling tales of friendly began to disappear. Meanwhile, our children were adventures on the playground like her older sister suffering. Their best interests had fallen to the bottom of the priority list. had at her age. Recess Is Necessary for Future Success Recess as part of the school day is well researched and recognized as a critical component of healthy child development. During recess, lifelong skills are acquired for communication, negotiation, cooperation, sharing, problem solving and coping. These skills are not only foundations for healthy development but are more predicative of future success than any other measure. Recess optimizes social, psychological, emotional, physical and cognitive development; maximizes learning effectiveness and retention; and improves classroom behavior, memory and attention. It provides an unstructured break from instruction during which children can be children. Playing is learning.

Renewed efforts by parents to restore daily recess for our children began in the summer of 2014 in Lee County, then in Lake County. I became a “Recess Mom” in Orange County a few months later, and then the movement spread to Polk, Osceola, Duval, Miami-Dade, and Okaloosa Counties and more. Amy and I researched recess, met with principals and district-level employees, created advocacy groups on social media, distributed fliers, interviewed with local and national news media, addressed our school boards and superintendents and rallied for recess.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. - The Lorax

Lobbying for Recess We gave it our all at the district level and experienced moderate success, but we weren’t able to obtain the research-based, universally recommended 20-minute daily recess policy districtwide. So, we joined forces with the Florida PTA and numerous child-centered groups and health and wellness organizations in an effort to solve the problem. We sent more emails and placed more phone calls to legislators than we can count, and then pooled our gas money and set our alarms for 3 a.m. to travel to Tallahassee almost weekly to lobby for a mandate that would ensure our kids would get the break in the day they needed. Our strategy was to hold our elected officials accountable while educating them about our position and building relationships. It took two legislative sessions to achieve our goal, but our voices were heard. Sponsored by Representative Rene Plascencia in the House, a teacher, and Senator Anitere Flores in the Senate, a lawyer and mother of two, our little recess bill moved through the process and enjoyed support from a vast majority of legislators. Our bill was ultimately swept up with a variety of other bills and included in a larger education bill that earned cheers and jeers from both sides of the aisle. The Recess Bill — Passed! Certainly, our recess bill passing on its own would have been preferable, but a recess

mandate passed, and we’re thrilled! Effective July 1, 2017, 20 consecutive minutes of unstructured, free-play recess must be provided every school day for elementary school children in kindergarten through fifth grade in addition to the existing 150 minutes per week of structured physical education. Unfortunately, because of an unexpected, last-minute exclusion for charter schools, the mandate isn't perfect yet, but we’ll continue our work to ensure daily recess for all of Florida’s public elementary school children. Three years ago, we set out to bring back recess for our own kids. Along the way, we were joined by thousands of parents committed to doing the same. We are proud that our effort serves as a reminder that the best interests of our children must always remain at the heart of the decision-making process, and that our educational system was set up to serve our children. It's a boost for parents who worry and wonder whether they have what it takes to identify a concern, step outside their comfort zone and change things for the better. Most of all, it's a win for our kids. We came together and put the health and wellness of Florida’s children first, and that is something to celebrate. FEATURE EDUCATION

We Love Our School! Choosing a private or charter school can be nerve-wracking. Sure, you read their marketing materials and talk to the principal, but what's the real deal? We went straight to Central Florida parents to get the inside scoop on local private and charter schools. Compiled and Edited by Tracey C. Velt

Learning to Be Intentional We moved to Florida from Connecticut about five years ago. At the time, we were concerned with finding a safe and comfortable learning environment like we had back home. Holy Family Catholic School is where we decided to send our three children. The principal, Sister Dorothy, along with the teachers and students welcomed my three children with open arms and kindness. The children made lasting friendships that have carried over into high school, as my oldest is now a junior at Bishop Moore Catholic High School. We love the fact that our children are academically challenged and know that God is with them at all times! They learn to be intentional with their thoughts and actions. We love that our children are exposed to many different cultures and learn to embrace the languages as well. They begin learning the fundamentals of Spanish very early on. Sports are a huge attraction for our family, as all three kids have engaged in more than one sport. Holy Family encourages each child to go outside their comfort zone and experiment with different sports. My kids love the special camaraderie of being a Lion and representing their school with pride! On a very personal level, the school conducted a moment of silence to pray for our family when the children's grandmother was very ill. It spoke volumes to get a phone call from Sister Dorothy expressing her thoughts and prayers. We know that our children consider their school their second home. Sue and Ryan Burr of Windermere; Parents of Taylor (16), Caden (13) and Dustin (8)

Engaged Teachers As new parents, it was easy to choose StarChild Academy, Wekiva. Our friends recommended it highly, and it was within walking distance of our home. After three years, the decision to continue with StarChild is just as easy. Our daughter’s care and education are highly valued, not only by us but by the entire staff as well. Parents are encouraged to engage with teachers, making the learning process a team effort. StarChild also goes above and beyond to teach nonacademic values like patriotism and responsibility. Scott and Amy Evans of Apopka; Parents of Abagail (3)

LOCAL PARENTS DISH ON WHAT THEY LOVE ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN'S SCHOOL.

Individualized Attention Both my children attended The Parke House Academy from age 3 through fifth grade. When they first walked through the doors at the school, they felt as if they were home. I love the small class settings, where children are taught and shown love, structure and discipline with the ability to move ahead or obtain extra help on an individual basis within the school's academically challenging and creativity inspiring curriculum. Shannon and Rex Hurley of Winter Park; Parents of Parker (11) and Tanner (14)

Beyond Academic Excellence

Focus on Independence and Creativity It’s hard to put into words what a blessing Galileo School for Gifted Learning has been to our family. As a former teacher, I love entering the classrooms and seeing the kids in hands-on learning environments and fully engaged. Many of the teachers use flexible seating choices with yoga mats and exercise balls, so you see children completing their work all over the classroom. My children love the independence with which they are entrusted. Outside time is valued and given more than once a day. Teachers pay attention to the whole child and all of their needs.

Our family chose Lake Highland Prep (LHP) for many reasons, but a few of them beyond academic excellence was the sense of community that Lake Highland offers and the innovative teaching and cultivation of character that the school instills. There are so many opportunities for you to get involved and participate at LHP. My daughter, Piper, started in pre-K and is in first grade now. Piper's favorite thing about Lake Highland is when their class gets to go to the iLab (Innovation lab), where students create, build and explore. There is something for every child at this school — swim team, chess club, STEM activities after school, sports teams and Odyssey of the Mind. This is a major draw to the school. We couldn't be happier with our choice of school. Go Highlanders! Megan and Will Dennis of College Park; Parents of Piper (6)

Creative Productivity is a time that truly sets Galileo apart from other schools. The children get to choose from six different activities that interest them. Some of kids’ favorites are robotics, origami, candy making, team sports, project runway and musical theater, to name a few. I truly believe that any child could thrive in this learning environment, and I know my children are getting the very best education. More importantly, they are learning to give back, be kind to others, and become contributing members of society and overall better human beings. FEATURE WE LOVE OUR SCHOOL Hands-on Learning What our family loves most about O2B Kids in Altamonte is the hands-on learning! Each Friday, our soon-to-be 3-year-old daughter has show & tell, where she is encouraged to bring in an item based on the letter, shape or color that she’s been learning all week. It gives us the opportunity to go on a treasure hunt at home and gives her a chance to tell a story about her item at school. It really helps us as parents connect with what she’s learning in class in a fun and meaningful way Justin and Claire Pagan of Altamonte; Parents of Jocelyn (2)

A Nurturing Environment We love Sweetwater Episcopal Academy (SEA) and its sweet, nurturing environment. The teachers are the heart of the school and truly love their jobs. They are extended family to our children. We love the KIND Zone, where everyone is kind to each other, and if someone is not, then other kids step in and remind them. It’s a big part of SEA’s culture. Also, we love the Rainbow Awards, which are given to kids who are caught doing random acts of kindness. The awards are presented in front of the entire school and parents at chapel each week. I’ve enjoyed being involved in the Parents Club and getting to know other families. My kids love going to school and are always eager to learn. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing they are safe, happy and in good hands while receiving a first-class education. Ellen and Leo Bessette of Longwood; Parents of Gianni (20), Elizabeth (11), Katherine (10) and Madeleine (7) Photo by LM Photography

Recycling Lessons One thing I love about the curriculum at Creative Inspiration Journey School (CIJS) is the emphasis on using recycled materials as part of the kids' learning. I've seen my older son transfer this to the way he plays at home. He's constantly rummaging through our recycling bin or asking to hold on to packaging materials because he's making plans for some new creation. I also appreciate that they are not afraid to get dirty. Experimentation and learning are supposed to get messy, and they embrace that. The messiness of play is too frequently missing in today’s childhood, and I feel better knowing my children get plenty at CIJS. Marie and Elysa of Winter Springs; Parents of two children, ages 2 and 4

Shared Values What I love most about The Christ School (TCS) is that we are a community of faculty, staff, students and families who share a similar set of values that are rooted in the Bible, and we truly care for and support each other. You know the saying,“It takes a village to raise a family?” TCS is my village. There is a sense of trust and commitment, and that is the foundation on which everything at the school is built. FEATURE WE LOVE OUR SCHOOL Nurturing Environment and Staff I count my lucky stars every day that we found A Kid’s Gym Learning Academy in Oviedo. My two children have been students of the preschool and gymnastics programs for four years now, and we couldn’t be happier. Like every working parent, I struggled with mom guilt and wondered if I was doing the right thing by going back to work and not staying home with my children, as I did when they were babies.

Strong Academics and Real Conversations There are so many things we love about Park Maitland School — from the strong focus on academics to the very special annual events tailored for each grade level. However, with today’s generation of young children so focused on social media and texting rather than having real conversations, we love that Park Maitland focuses on developing strong social skills. This quickly becomes apparent when visiting the school. Students are taught to look people in the eyes when communicating and to answer in full sentences in a reciprocal conversation. We love seeing how much adults appreciate it when our children answer their questions with a question of their own. We think these skills will give our children a strong head start to becoming successful and productive members of our community.

Everyone from the director to the teachers and gymnastics coaches nurtures and cares for my children as if they were their own. My youngest struggled with the transition to full time daycare when he was two years old, and his teachers and the school staff supported us to ensure that he could spend a little time each morning with his sister to get him acquainted with his new home away from home. It was that small, kind gesture that set this school apart from everywhere else. They understand that every child (as well as this helicopter mom) has unique needs, and they treat them and their challenging moms accordingly. These qualities, along with their exceptional curriculum and teaching techniques, make learning fun. My children have thrived and have become independent, intelligent, healthy young people. Every day is a new and exciting experience at A Kid’s Gym, and we would never consider anywhere or anyone else to protect, nurture and care for our children. Feels Like Home I was a teacher before having children and was immediately drawn to the atmosphere at Walden Community School (WCS). When we visited, I was comfortable and felt at home. It’s easy to see that the students feel the same way. The kids were learning and having fun. Some students had their shoes off. Some were lounging in beanbag chairs, and some were laying on yoga mats. A teacher was working with a small group at a table in a side room. Most importantly, every student was actively engaged in his or her work. When our youngest daughter, Eliana, visited WCS, she didn’t want to go home. She became a Walden Student the week after her visit, and I became a Walden teacher the next school year! Forward Thinking We love Windermere Prep School (WPS) because our school loves our kids. They teach and care for each of our children like the unique individuals that they are. I am proud that WPS, after the successful pilot program in our son's class last year, has started mindfulness in the classroom. Alongside the Young Yogi Program, WPS is creating an environment where our children can learn joyfully, self regulate and succeed. It's this kind of forward thinking by the staff and administration that comforts me when I drop them off each morning. Grayson ringing the bell on May 22, 2017, signaling the end of his cancer treatment.

Grayson with David Shook, MD, medical director of Florida Hospital for Children's pediatric bone marrow transplant program, who performed his life-saving stem cell transplant.

Grayson's Story: End Childhood Cancer A tornado in your brain. That’s what it feels like when a doctor tells you the four ugly words: Your child has cancer. Since Valentine’s Day 2015, we have been on a roller coaster of emotions, fighting for our son’s life. After finding a golfball sized lump on his neck, our then 10-year old son, Grayson, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Over the course of two years, his treatment included a battery of tests, scans and X-rays, surgery, multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and a stem cell transplant. Thanks to the highly skilled medical team at Florida Hospital for Children and the courage of our son, Grayson has beaten his cancer twice. On May 22, 2017, he finally got to ring the bell signaling the long-awaited end of treatment and the quieting of the tornado in our brains. We wish our story were rare. Sadly, Grayson is one of the 15,780 children who are diagnosed with cancer every year. The disease affects many, yet the funding is lacking. According to the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer receives more research funding than all childhood cancers combined. With your help, we can change this. Carl and Michelle Zrelak of Longwood Parents of Grayson Zrelak, age 12
