Got Culture? Orlando may not have Instagram-worthy fall foliage or weather that’s cold enough to wear chunky sweaters and boots, but that doesn’t mean we can’t embrace the change in season. For some of us, that means photo shoots at the Pumpkin Patch (see our roundup on page TK). For others, it’s preparing for the onslaught of Halloween and Thanksgiving activities. If you’re excited about fall, this issue of PLAYGROUND has you covered. For the spookiest sweet treats in town, you must check out page TK. These locally made desserts are perfect for a Halloween party — or if you want to be the most popular house on the block during trick or treating. And speaking of parties, event planner Molly Shapiro Boe put together a Friendsgiving spread on page TK that your little turkeys will gobble up. This issue also sheds light on ways to get cultured around town. From exploring what the Central Florida arts scene has to offer (page TK) to dining at one of the best waterfront restaurants in Orlando (page TK) to hitting up the neighborhood bookstore (TK), there’s so much to do outside the confines of your typical bubble. Sometimes getting out of the house includes shopping too. If that sounds more your speed than a museum, flip to page TK for Tugboat & The Bird’s fall look book. Cue me adding all the plaid and TK to my daughter’s closet. And with Thanksgiving around the corner, I also want to say that everyone here at the magazine is so thankful for each and every one of YOU. We recently held our first in-person casting call since February 2020, and we loved reconnecting with some of our readers again, masks and all. So, in honor of being together again, I’m raising my Pumpkin Spice Latte to our PLAYGROUND family.

5 Global Reads to Bookmark Sometimes a good book is all kids need to widen their worldview. Writer’s Block Bookstore selected these five books to transport tween readers from their homes in Central Florida to different corners of the globe, from rural Sweden to ancient India.

1. Pippi Longstocking

by Astrid Lindgren (SWEDEN)

With her signature red pigtails and a face full of freckles, Pippi Longstocking is a character children continue to fall in love with decades after her story was first published in the 1940s. Thanks to her rebellious spirit, this Swedish 9-year-old teaches girls (and boys) to be fiercely independent, and her wild antics never fail to entertain.

2. Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (GREAT BRITAIN)

Harry Potter isn’t the only Brit you should read about. This tale follows Sophie and her plight against the Witch of Waste. Under the Witch’s spell, Sophie turns into an old lady and must go on a journey, both physically and emotionally, to break the curse.

3. Kiki’s Delivery Service

by Eiko Kadono (JAPAN)

Kids will never know that this fantasy novel following a young witch and her pet cat was originally written in Japanese. The

whimsical yet humorous tale includes insights into Japan’s culture, and it’s been adapted into an equally endearing animated film.

4. When Stars Are Scattered

by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed (KENYA) There’s a reason why this graphic novel was a National Book Award Finalist: It’s the compelling story of two brothers living in a Kenyan refugee camp and what happens when one gets an opportunity to completely change his life. The story is based on Somalian co-author Omar Mohamed’s experience as a refugee, so it’s an accurate look at what day-to-day life was like.

5. Kiki Kallira Breaks a Kingdom

by Sangu Mandanna (INDIA)

Anyone who’s ever had anxiety can relate to Kiki Kallira’s plight to tame her worrywart tendencies. Kiki’s stressors go beyond just family, friends and school: Indian mythological characters come to life and eventually pull her into another world in this fantastical coming-of-age adventure.

How to Talk to Kids About Scary Things

Simple strategies to put the monster under the bed — and other fears — into perspective Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin

From Halloween-themed movies to haunted house attractions to the frightening persistence of Covid-19, fall is filled with things that can scare kids. As parents, it’s easy to write off certain things as silly or not a big deal, but it’s important to remember that to children, even trivial fears can sometimes feel paralyzing. The best way to help little ones overcome these intense emotions is through open, honest dialogue. PLAYGROUND reached out to Dr. Amber Fasula, clinical psychologist and director at Neurogenesis Center of Florida in Maitland, for these tips:

Watch Your Tone When it comes to talking about fears, the tone of your voice is crucial. “It’s the most important thing,” explains Dr. Fasula. “This is true for any age. Our tone along with our body language and mood is what matters most.” The reasoning: Kids take cues from us, so if you’re tense, children will be anxious too. If you speak rationally and confidently, they’ll mimic that behavior. This especially pertains to the littlest of kids — even if they’re not developmentally old enough to process the words, they’ll understand the tone. “For example, when a 2 or 3-year-old falls and scrapes their knee, they look to the parent. It’s the parent’s reaction that shows them how to react,” she

explains. If you freak out, they’ll respond in a similar fashion. “There’s no innate programming on how we process fear or pain, but there is on how we experience it.”

Respond Appropriately “Whatever you do, don’t criticize a child’s fear, call it stupid or ridiculous,” explains Dr. Fasula. Criticism implies that your child’s fear isn’t valid. Instead, offer reassurance. It’s also important to talk with children, starting around the age of 5, about the fear itself and then aim for a solution-focused approach. Take a child who is frightened of the dark. An effective strategy would be to ask them what they’d like to do about it, whether it’s getting a new nightlight or stuffed animal that’ll make them feel safe. “When you help them solve the problem, it empowers them to feel like they can do something about it,” says Dr. Fasula.

Differentiate Between the Possible and the Probable While it’s possible a meteor could hit your house, it’s not probable. Using a probable versus possible scale to measure a child’s fear helps determine how to tackle it. For unlikely scenarios, express that you understand why the child might feel concerned, but then explain how rare it would be for that occurrence to happen. For more probable fears, figure out a stepby-step plan for how to address the issue. 16 PLAYGROUND Oct / Nov 2021

Tackle Heavier Topics Head On Navigating things like disease and death can be tricky, but it’s important to have these conversations rather than pretend these concerns don’t exist. Give children the facts, and then explain how they can protect themselves. For example, while it’s possible to contract Covid-19 at school, wearing a mask drastically lowers the risk. This continues to encourage solutionbased ways to conquer fears no matter how realistic they may be. When it comes to discussing the concept of dying, explain that death is an ending. “Get them comfortable understanding the concept of what an ending looks like,” says Dr. Fasula. Explaining that most things eventually end — even mundane things like a pencil that’s out of lead — helps them grasp the concept.

Know When It’s a Bigger Problem Sometimes, no matter how much you’ve talked through things, a child may still be scared. If constant support and encouragement isn’t improving anything — and it’s beginning to interfere with daily life — consider seeking guidance from a professional. “When it’s something that’s creating a lot of distress over a period of time, you might want to call a counselor or psychologist who can provide tools to manage emotions better,” says Dr. Fasula.

FOSTERING 5 THINGS TO KNOW WHEN YOU’RE THINKING OF

E

Words by Maggie Dante

very child deserves a safe place to sleep at night, but unfortunately, that’s not always the reality. In Central Florida alone, more than 1,700 children need the support of foster families. That’s where fostering comes in to provide support. At the most basic level, a foster home provides a safe place to stay. But fostering provides much more than simply a roof over a child’s head; fostering provides a support system. Foster parents offer a

temporary anchor of stability during a scary and traumatic time. According to a 2017 poll, more than one-quarter of all adults in America have considered fostering but far fewer take steps to actually get involved. If you’re in that questioning crowd or just curious to learn more about how fostering works, here are the five things you should know about fostering:

18 PLAYGROUND Oct / Nov 2021

LOVE | Fostering Photo: Embrace Families

How do I become a foster parent? The biggest hurdle for most prospective foster families to overcome is simply making that first call. No matter how many questions you have, the best way to find answers is by getting on the phone with an experienced child welfare professional. In Central Florida, call 1-866-90-CHILD. If you decide to move forward in the process after your conversation with a child welfare professional, you’re required to attend an orientation and complete a 30-hour National Training and Development (NTDC) curriculum before becoming certified.

What are the requirements? Any qualified adult can be licensed to foster no matter their marital status, sexual orientation, age, gender, home ownership status or income level. The requirements are straightforward: You must be 21 years of age or older, and you must pass a thorough home inspection, interview process and background check. Additionally, you must not be a current recipient of governmental financial assistance. Other than that, all you need is the willingness to welcome a child into your heart and home.

How long will a child remain in my care?

Where is my help most needed?

No two situations are exactly alike. Some children will be in foster care for just one night before moving to stay with a relative or caregiver in the morning. Others may remain in foster care for several years while their parents work on reunification plans. Most cases will fall somewhere in the middle, and the child will be in your care from a few weeks to several months. Ultimately, the goal for each child is permanency, whether that means returning to a stronger, more stable family or being adopted into another family.

Finding foster homes for teens is much more difficult than placing infants and young children, so people willing to take in high schoolers are always welcome with open arms. Kids don’t “outgrow” the need for a family when they turn 13. While you may not be there for your foster teen’s first words or first steps, you can be the first to help them with homework, drive them to a swim meet or cheer them on at graduation — and that’s every bit as meaningful.

What support is available to foster parents? Fostering can be a big transition, which is why an experienced caregiver support team is ready to help you through the early stages of the process. The child’s case manager will also stay involved throughout the placement and, depending on where you live, local foster parent associations can also be an incredible network. Because raising a child comes with extra expenses, there are resources available to help offset that cost. Foster parents receive a monthly stipend for childcare, and a specialty Medicaid plan covers all the child’s health and dental expenses. Additionally, teens and young adults in foster care are eligible for assistance in obtaining a driver’s license and car insurance as well as waived tuition at many Florida colleges.

If you’re in a position to do so, fostering siblings can be another great way to make a difference. All too often, kids in foster care have survived scary situations, but staying with their brothers and sisters softens the trauma of separation and helps them feel safe. Over a lifetime, keeping siblings together can have a huge impact on a child’s emotional health and development. Whether or not you decide to take the first steps to become a foster parent, never forget how powerful an impact one family can have. By opening your heart and home to youth whose lives are in crisis, you are a stepping stone for building stronger families and futures for Florida’s children. For more information, visit EmbraceFamilies.org to connect with resources, sign up for classes and find out how fostering can fit your family.

Get your family cultured — and have fun doing it together — at one of these 16 places across town Words by Amanda Green

Fostering a love of art early in life can have tremendous benefits for children: It boosts self-esteem, sparks curiosity, encourages creativity and requires critical thinking. However, as a parent, it may seem stressful to take your little ones to a museum exhibit or live performance. Luckily, here in Central Florida, we have lots of kid-friendly programs offering low-stress options for artsy kids and their parents. 22 PLAYGROUND Oct / Nov 2021

Culture Guide

Check out these picks that strike the perfect balance between educational and exciting:

Architecture

Maitland Art Center Skip the playground and instead check out this National Historic Landmark in the heart of downtown Maitland. It's dripping in art and history. Founded as an art colony back in 1937, families are free to tour the gardens and grounds for an up-close look at the signature Mayan Revival fantasy architecture. General admission for the Maitland Art Center is $6 for adults and $5 for kids. Plus, guided art gallery tours and youth classes are also available.

Performing Arts

Orlando Ballet Fairy tales and family favorites come alive on stage at the Orlando Ballet. To help prevent the youngest kiddos from getting antsy, the company limits its matinee performances to 60 minutes. Upcoming kid-friendly performances include The Jungle Book (October 7–10) and the annual rendition of The Nutcracker (December 3–5 and 16–19). Another unique aspect? The performances are sensory-friendly. These adjustments to sound and lighting effects, including keeping the house lights dimly on, are designed to create a comfortable environment for everybody. Orlando Shakes This acclaimed local theater offers a variety of shows and experiences. While the Children’s Series has been canceled this season, PLAYGROUND got a sneak peek at the upcoming holiday production of A Christmas Carol. The classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his three ghosts comes to life on stage under the direction of one of Orlando’s premier musicians, Michael Andrew. The show runs from December 1–24. Tickets range from $32–$56.

Visual Arts

Orlando Museum of Art Even the youngest art lovers can stroll the galleries by attending the museum’s Stroller Tours program, a 1-hour guided tour designed for babies, toddlers and their caregivers on select Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. $12 covers one adult and up to four children. The museum also offers family workshops, mobile guides, art adventures and sketching in the galleries for older students. The museum holds Monthly Family Highlights Tours on the first Saturday of every month. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art This museum is best known for its beautiful collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany glass. While that might not sound very kid-friendly, the museum curators keep families in mind. The Create & Explore family program offers online materials about art history. Museum curators recommend families watch the video Louis Comfort Tiffany The Interior Decorator prior to coming to the museum. After their visit, families can then go home and redesign a room in their house together, taking inspiration from what they learned. Mennello Museum of American Art Kids will love exploring the property’s sculpture garden and its iconic 350-year-old live oak tree dubbed “The Mayor.” Plus, the second Sunday of the month is Free Family Funday, which includes complimentary museum admission and a take-home art project for the first 20 children.

Orlando Repertory Theatre (The REP) Consider yourself lucky to be raising kids near this home for outstanding children's theater productions. Older children may enjoy The Secret Agency on October 23, an action-packed hiphop performance that “blurs the lines between kids’ music, young adult narratives and universal storytelling.” Every princess will want tickets to The REP’s rendition of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella scheduled for November 12–December 19. Other programming includes Baby & Me, a class that’s full of sensory discovery, movement and music. Also, children between 2 and 3 years old will love Story Stroll, an outdoor journey filled with creative play. Kids Fringe Festival This wouldn’t be an arts guide without mentioning one of the biggest theater art festivals in town! The Orlando Fringe Festival happens every spring. Kids Fringe offers a series of events for younger audiences, ranging from live performances to workshops to artistic activities. Past events have included a DJ experience, bracelet making and more. Also, a Winter Mini Fest is scheduled for January 2022.

The family-friendly shows take place on the fourth Sunday of the month and are free for kids ages 12 and under. Kids can choose from a menu offering different types of jelly, peanut butter and bread and lots of specialty toppings like Nutella, Marshmallow Fluff and banana.

• Young YouTube fans can see their favorite animators on stage when the popular Scribble Showdown returns November 19. Asian Lantern Festival This November, the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens will transform at night into the Asian Lantern Festival: Into the Wild! See over 30 different, hand-constructed illuminated lanterns displayed around the zoo. Celebrate the art, beauty and wonder of traditional Asian lantern festivals. Best Waterfront Dining for Kids

In Central Florida, there’s no shortage of waterfront restaurants that serve up delicious food with a side of picturesque scenery and wildlife. Now that the brutal summer heat is behind us, it’s an ideal time to sit outside and enjoy the cooler temperatures. The Boathouse

Words by Chris Karel

A bucket list for family-friendly dining with a view: The Boathouse (Disney Springs)

The Boathouse certainly lives up to its name: The indoor seating at this Disney Springs restaurant is arranged around a classic speedboat that doubles as a booth, while the outdoor dining area overlooks a collection of restored antique boats. After your meal, hop on an Amphicar (that’s a car that doubles as a boat) from the dock outside the restaurant for a 20-minute cruise.

Rocco’s Tacos (Dr. Phillips)

Stepping into Rocco’s Tacos is like a Choose Your Own Adventure novel. Do you drink in the glory of Little Sand Lake? Or do you let yourself be entranced by the colorful Día de los Muertos -inspired artwork sprinkled around the dining room? Our suggestion: Choose the lake for lunch and décor for dinner. Either way, the kids will love watching the server prepare the guacamole tableside, and you’ll dig the margaritas.

Relax Grill (Lake Eola)

Just a few steps off the promenade at Lake Eola, Relax Grill is a great place to people watch while you and the kids enjoy homemade hummus and virgin strawberry daiquiris. The restaurant serves American and Mediterranean cuisine for lunch and dinner, with an affordable kids' menu. You can even bring your pooch since Relax Grill’s patio is pet-friendly. Its casual atmosphere makes it the perfect place to chill after taking a spin in one of Lake Eola’s famous swan boats or strolling the Sunday farmer’s market.

Splashes Bistro (Lake Nona)

As Nona Adventure Park’s on-site snack bar, Splashes Bistro is a no-brainer after a day of conquering the aquatic obstacle course. But the restaurant’s delicious gourmet pizzas, burgers and salads make it worth a visit even if you’re skipping the park. There’s also an extensive selection of wine and beer, so go at sunset to soak up the views or sip chardonnay while trying not to laugh at other people’s kids wiping out on the cable wakeboard course.

The Waterfront (Orlando)

Just south of Orlando’s hip SoDo district, The Waterfront sits on the shores of Lake Jennie Jewell like a treasure chest waiting for you to discover the riches inside. The beach-inspired restaurant serves firecracker chicken sliders and ahi tuna nachos that are to die for, as well as kids’ favorites like burgers and chicken tenders. Whatever you choose for your main course, just make sure you leave room for The Waterfront’s famous red velvet donuts.

Paddlefish (Disney Springs)

Like “hamster pants” and “frisbee whiskers,” “floating restaurant” is one of those phrases that’s guaranteed to grab a kid’s attention. Paddlefish is the latest family-friendly restaurant to set up shop on the three-deck riverboat that’s been a fixture of the Walt Disney World resort since 1977. It’s also the only eatery in Disney Springs that offers diners a rooftop, 350-degree waterfront view. Children get a kids’ menu featuring all the old standbys and a pack of Wikki Stix to keep them occupied.

Wekiva Island (Longwood)

As you canoe from Wekiva Springs State Park down the Wekiva River, Wekiva Island emerges like an oasis in the desert, ready to soothe both your “over it” children and your hankering for a cold beer. In lieu of a sit-down, full-service restaurant, the sprawling property offers food and drinks through the Without a Paddle Café. Grub and grog in hand, you and the kiddies can sit on the boardwalk along the river or pull up a chair next to the fire pit or sand volleyball court. For an extra fee, you can even decamp to a private waterfront cabana. And don’t worry, landlubbers – Wekiva Island is also accessible by car.

The zookeeper also provided a zoo animal sensory experience to participants from the Children’s Program. The Children’s Program at Lighthouse Central Florida supports kids ages 5–13 and their families with services that enhance each child’s learning and ability to function independently, as well as engage with parents, guardians and family members. The Transition Program benefits students ages 14–22 who are currently in the school system under an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), providing them with skills and experience to facilitate successful transition from high school to post-secondary activities, such as college, vocational school and employment.

Give Thanks with a Friendsgiving Breakfast Kids will gobble up this cute (and tasty!) party idea While everyone loves Thanksgiving dinner, sometimes it’s fun to mix things up. If you’re looking to teach your children about the spirit of Turkey Day, try throwing a Friendsgiving breakfast instead. Not only does this save you from cooking a full feast, but it also kicks off the day with an extra helping of gratitude. Local party planner, Molly Shapiro Boe of The Preppy Hostess® shared some festive ideas that parents and kids alike will love: The DIY Activity:

The Tablescape:

While hand turkeys are always adorable, take the creativity level up a notch with paper bag turkey puppets. Give each child a paper bag and have them glue on feathers, construction paper and googly eyes for decoration.

Keep it simple and budget-friendly with a festive paper plates, pumpkin decor and faux fall foliage.

The Food: What’s better than turkey? A pancake in the shape of a turkey! Make one large, round pancake for the body and a smaller one for the head. Then cut out two heart-shaped pancakes with a cookie cutter for the wings. Adorn its face with edible candy eyes and cut up fruit for the beak, feet and neck. Then fashion the tail with scrambled eggs and mixed fruit.

The Dessert: End things on a sweet note by passing out donut holes as a take home treat. A plastic bag and ribbon is all you need to say thanks for coming!

Meet Molly! The quintessential event planner, Molly Shapiro Boe from The Preppy Hostess® has partnered with dozens of Central Florida clientele on events and celebrations over the past 10 years. Her attention to detail and creative mindset is the perfect combination for anyone looking for a smooth event experience.
