EDITOR'S NOTE PLAYGROUND's managing editor Tracey Velt and her family

Discovering Central Florida When my kids, Jake (age 21) and Sofia (age 10), were little, I often found it difficult to find fun places to go and activities to do with them. I gathered some information from my local Moms Club, but there really wasn’t a goto source I could rely on for the latest information. Plus, living in Lake Mary, I usually didn’t venture much past Altamonte Springs unless it was to visit the theme parks or shop at Mall at Millenia. When PLAYGROUND Magazine came around, my entire world opened up! PLAYGROUND highlighted can’t-miss places and activities throughout Central Florida — ideas so good that I had to break free from my Lake Mary bubble to discover new places to shop, activities to do with the kids and family-friendly restaurants to try. PLAYGROUND became my source of information and inspiration for planning fun-filled adventures with my family. This month, we have compiled that same awesome information for you in our popular Family Favorites issue. From innovative schools and hidden gem parks to the best maternity services and cool cultural spots, this issue is a must-keep for those days when you need to get out of the house but aren’t sure where to go. Plus, we’ve got a fabulous holiday gift guide (page 17) that features products from local shops and experiences from local places, making your holiday shopping easier.

Pass on this local info to the other moms during your next play date. Words by JJ West and Tracey Velt

SNAPS WITH STYLE Growing up, family photos were taken in a small studio in front of an unrealistic-looking background (like in a field with a faux wood fence!). I remember my mom choosing outfits based on whether they would look good framed in gold and hung above the couch. Thanks to creative, local photographers, we now have better options. From in-studio shots to outside photographs at the local park, these photographers know how to capture your family’s personality. Here’s a list of PLAYGROUND-approved photographers. Contact them early to book your holiday shoot. SPEAKING OF FAMILY PHOTOS… We love to check out Pinterest and social media to find fun, creative ideas for family photo wardrobes. Cool photos demand a cool wardrobe, and the pressure can be intense! After all, we must choose outfits that can be worn outdoors, reflect the personality of each family member, vaguely coordinate with each other without being matchy-matchy and are stylish enough to be cool but won’t look dated in a few years. Whew, it can get daunting pretty quickly. If you’re working on your family photo wardrobe, a few local moms can help fill in some of the details. Looking for super casual and nontraditional? Think Rolls and Raspberries (rollsandraspberries.com). They have amazing t-shirt options for the less formal photo shoot. Designer Jenn Miller says she had, “one too many Who Wore it Best, Baby Edition experiences in Mommy and Me classes. I wanted something super comfortable and funny for my child to wear.” She combined her sense of humor with her experience in design and screen printing to open the Rolls and Raspberries online store. The site offers body suits for infants and tees and tanks for children and adults. Some of the most popular designs include the “Cool story, Mom. Now make me a sandwich (no crusts)” tee and the “I came out like a wrecking ball” body suit. My personal fav is the adult tee that reads, “Can today’s Mystery Mouseketool be wine?” There are seasonal designs for each holiday and even some pajama options. Sweat, Cycle and Give Back Luxury and sweat are not terms one would typically use together, but it is what you’ll find at CycleBar Winter Park (winterpark.cyclebar.com), which offers themed rides, free clip-in shoe rental and tons of comfortable amenities. This isn’t a stuffy room full of bikes. More than just the exercise, we love the fact that CycleBar gives back to the community through CycleGiving, a philanthropic movement that partners with local organizations and charities to help them raise donations through fundraising events inside the studio. Check out their website for ride packages, class times and information on special events.

Shoe Tip For Your Family Photos

More than Just Hairstyling Pig Tails and Crew Cuts (pigtailsandcrewcuts.com) has a new location in Winter Springs. Sure, they do a great job of cutting and styling your little ones’ hair, but they offer so much more. Your princesses, pirates, divas and super heroes can have a birthday party that includes a special themed hairstyle, makeup or face-paint and a craft with all of their friends. The salon also offers special pampering packages, ear piercing and nail services. Fun for Little Ninjas Calling all ninjas! USA Gymnastics (gymnasticsusa.us) is now looking to train ninjas to help protect Central Florida. Children ages 5 to 12 can take their ninja skills to a whole new level with weekly group classes at the Winter Garden and Longwood locations. Instructors evaluate each ninja’s level to ensure their acrobatic and self-defense skills are honed for the best ninja performance. Wanted: Mary Poppins! Are you looking for the Mary Poppins of nannies? Check out Twinkle Toes Nanny Agency's (southorlando.twinkletoesnanny.com) new location in East Orlando. Parents can find full-time nannies and occasional babysitters who have been cleared above industry standards. The best part — no membership, application or placement fees.

Shoes can be a tricky part of the total look. Check out Mocca by Baby by Angie Upchurch (etsy.com). She has over 20 styles of moccasins for boys and girls, most customizable by color. If you need something with a formal or whimsical feel to complete your little’s look, you’ll find it here. Favorites include the Fox Moccs and the Brianna Moccs (they include a beautiful lace design over the leather). If your family is using a sports team motif for this year’s photo, she has plenty of team-inspired designs. Each pair is handmade in her Central Florida home. Find them at the new B&B Babytalk in St. Cloud.

Cindy and Peter Zimmermann Franchise owners of Star Child Academy

t first, Peter Zimmermann and his wife, Cindy, seem unlikely candidates for starting a school. After all, the couple met 31 years ago at IBM and both have finance backgrounds. However, once you speak to them, you can hear the passion in their voices when it comes to education. So, how did they get from IBM to founding StarChild Academy in Apopka, then to franchising the concept? “In 1992, we thought about moving to Florida because Cindy’s parents lived here,” says Peter. “IBM has a program where, if you leave the company to start a business, they will give you money to do so.” The couple bought a childcare franchise in Oviedo but found that the play-oriented learning philosophy didn’t mesh with their beliefs. “Our philosophy is more academic,” he says. So, they sold that franchise and developed a plan to build a school they were passionate about — StarChild Academy. “We teach an advanced curriculum,” says Peter. “Our three-year-olds do a pre-K-level curriculum. Our four-year-olds do a kindergarten curriculum. Our goal is to have them reading by the time they go to kindergarten,” he says. The school now offers classes for children 6 weeks old through fifth grade. “Our students take a national test called the Iowa test, and our fifth grade is testing on a 9th and 10th grade level. In addition,

StarChild offers foreign languages (American Sign Language, Arabic, Mandarin and Russian), music theory and extracurricular activities such as computers, gymnastics, art and dance. Since the Zimmermanns opened their first location in Apopka in 2000, StarChild has grown to serve 515 children at seven franchised locations throughout Central Florida. “When we left IBM, we had no idea how to run a business,” says Peter. “Childcare appealed to us because we knew we could make an impact in the community.” Through it all, says Peter, he’s learned that children can learn anything. “A lot of people underestimate how much children can learn. We take advantage of the time children are with us to give them a great start.” As for the Zimmermanns, they still run the Apopka school. “We’re kind of like the grandparents. This is our passion.”
