Back to School When I was a kid, I loved this time of year. Even though I was sad summer was over, there was always something thrilling about receiving my homeroom assignment and supply list. Soon after, my mom and I would dedicate a day to backto-school shopping so I could get new notebooks, pens and whatever weird math item the year called for (remember protractors and TI-83 calculators?). While I’m sure many of you are in the thick of school prep right now, some of you may be sitting out BTS shopping this year. After all, with the rise of virtual learning, who really needs a brand-new pencil case? Just ask the families in our feature story, Is Flex Learning the Future of Education on page 23. Betsy Jewell reports on how flex learning may be a solution for those looking for an alternative to traditional schooling. Other can’t-miss stories include Is This School?, rising high school senior Isabel Tongson’s personal essay about her experiences with both in-person and remote classes, and 5 Simple Tweaks To Make Your Home Montessori-Friendly, a home design piece filled with ways to encourage young children’s development outside of an academic setting. Also, make sure to flip to page 30 to see a few of the cutest kids from PLAYGROUND’s cover contest and page 48 for our Enrichment Guide, where you can find the best educational programs. Finally, once you’ve settled back into your post-summer routine, check out Shake Up Your Saturday Night to plan an adults’ night out in Downtown Orlando. You’ve made it to the start of another school year, which is reason enough to celebrate.

ICON Park: The ultimate destination for Central Florida field trips Written by Chris Jaskiewicz, ICON Park president and CEO
G
rowing up in Central Florida, I know firsthand all of the wonderful adventures and educational opportunities Greater Orlando offers. Every child has a favorite part of school, and like for most students, mine was always field trips.
From learning all about space exploration at the John Young Planetarium (now the Orlando Science Center) to being inspired by the Orlando Orchestra to exploring the area’s great attractions, I always came home from field trips energized and ready to absorb more information. After moving back to my hometown with my family several years ago, I was excited to share my love for Central Florida with my children. They would finally be able to experience the same places that made me so eager to learn back when I was in school. As the leader of ICON Park, I’ve made a strong effort to set the entertainment complex up as the ultimate field trip destination. Not only is it home to Orlando’s most exciting attractions, but it’s packed full of learning opportunities for students of all ages.

Fun, Educational Opportunities
Leadership Commitment to Education
ICON Park’s signature attraction, The Wheel, gives school groups the chance to learn from new heights. The 400-foot observation wheel provides a fun experience for students while offering a unique view of Central Florida from a new perspective – high above the clouds. During the ride, The Wheel’s in-capsule audio system allows students to learn about the history of Ferris wheels while exploring the science, technology, engineering and math that make this mechanical marvel turn, creating a full circle learning experience.
While ICON Park as a whole works toward being a welcoming destination for students and teachers, members of our company’s leadership team have also made a personal commitment to supporting education.
To ensure students get the most out of their ride, we’ve also created a series of downloadable resources for teachers, including lesson plans, discussion topics, activities, quizzes and projects. In addition to The Wheel, there are several top-tier museums right onsite at ICON Park. Museum of Illusions features over 50 interactive, immersive and distinctly incomprehensible exhibits based on math, science and psychology. Students are prompted to learn about the tricks of perception and how the human brain works as they move through each exhibit. SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium introduces students to a range of scientific topics and encourages excitement and curiosity about marine phenomena in the natural world. From feeling the spiny skin of a sea star to gazing at sharks swimming overhead, students can explore over 20 marine exhibits, 2,000 sea creatures and 250 species in an immersive setting. Madame Tussauds Orlando provides students with an entertaining and educational opportunity to experience the world's most fascinating celebrities, influential world leaders, historical figures and sports icons. This wax museum is dedicated to the meticulous art of sculpting the most popular celebrities from the worlds of film, television, music, politics, history, sports and the arts from yesterday and today. Not only are we dedicated to crafting unforgettable experiences for students, we’re also strong supporters of teachers. We’re proud to offer the Teacher Pass to all of our local classroom heroes. Any teacher in the State of Florida is eligible to receive unlimited access to ride The Wheel at any time for a full year. Each month, we also send out a special newsletter to over 14,000 educators focused on field trips, school programs and other content.
When I’m not planning exciting new projects at ICON Park or attending my children’s sporting events, you can find me volunteering with Junior Achievement, serving as a member of the board of directors. Founded in 1919, Junior Achievement is the world's oldest and largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. I was extremely proud to be able to support Junior Achievement’s mission by hosting a Spirit Week for Oak Ridge High School's Junior Achievement Academy and making a $3,125 donation to the school’s program on behalf of ICON Park. This school is located in the same neighborhood I grew up in, which meant a lot to me. This past December, I had the opportunity to speak to the high school’s Junior Achievement students. I prepared and gave a presentation on ICON Park’s industries (entertainment and real estate), its history, the company’s departments and their functions, the company’s values, and shared a “return on investment” analysis that it was considering for a specific project. I was able to personally connect with these future leaders of tomorrow who grew up in the same place I did and share with them “If I can do this, you can too.” To benefit a broader number of students in Central Florida, I pledged ICON Park’s support of the JA Inspire Virtual for over 13,000 8th grade students from both Orange and Osceola School Districts. The JA Inspire Virtual is a career fair that offers students the opportunity to learn about Central Florida’s high-wage, highdemand jobs, careers opportunities and the education pathways BEFORE planning their high school course work. In addition to my work with Junior Achievement, ICON Park’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, John Goodman, and Director of Sales, Samantha Tudor, are both heavily involved with Orange County Public Schools. John is a proud member of the Orange Technical College Advisory Board, working directly with the Administrative Office Specialist Program. Samantha enjoys participating in the school district’s annual Partners in Education Program. In April 2020, ICON Park was able to provide 1,750 complimentary tickets to The Wheel for Orange County Library System’s “Summer Reading Program” program. If you’re a teacher or homeschool parent, ICON Park is proud to welcome you. From endless educational opportunities to exciting adventures, we’re sure your students will leave filled with awe and an eagerness to learn. To learn more about our educational opportunities or school group offerings, visit iconparkorlando.com/ groups/schools-groups or call 407-601-7907.
Not only are we dedicated to crafting unforgettable experiences for students, we’re also strong supporters of teachers. Any teacher in the State of Florida is eligible to receive unlimited access to ride The Wheel at any time for a full year. 15 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sept 2021

Calling All Citizen Scientists! My children and I recently spent an afternoon taking pictures of local plants and animals at a nearby park. We used the Seek app by iNaturalist, a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society, to explore a variety of species. My kids were so engaged in this activity that they didn’t want to go home! They found it so fascinating that the app would identify details about a plant or animal by simply taking a picture of it.
What Is Citizen Science?
Not only does iNaturalist help kids learn how to identify wildlife and plants and encourage them to spend more time outside, but kids are also helping experts collect data by practicing citizen science.
Volunteers have varying levels of expertise, from kids in their backyards to members of high school science clubs to amateur astronomers with sophisticated home equipment. And technology, namely apps like iNaturalist, make citizen science more accessible today than ever before. Projects typically involve volunteers collecting data, like counting certain types of birds they see in their neighborhood or taking pictures and submitting them digitally.
So what exactly is citizen science? Read on to learn about this educational — and fun! — initiative: Words by Sandi Schwartz
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, citizen science is “the collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the general public, typically as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists.” Citizen science involves volunteering to collect data, and it is a way for our children to gain science experience and directly help the scientific community. It also allows government offices and other organizations to engage the public in addressing societal needs and accelerating science, technology and innovation. Additionally, citizen science helps address real-world problems like climate change and biodiversity.
Citizen science isn’t a new phenomenon. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has organized the Christmas Bird Count that runs from December 14 through January 5 each year. An experienced birder leads a group (called a circle) of volunteers as they collect information about local populations of birds. More than 2,000 circles operate across the United States and Canada. Ultimately, this wildlife census contributes to bird conservation efforts.
16 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sept 2021
Does Citizen Science Have Any Benefits? Citizen science can help us feel happier and calmer for a few reasons. The first is that most projects take place outdoors. It’s been proven that spending time in nature can help reduce stress and boost our mood. When we are engaged in a project, whether it’s taking pictures or counting a specific type of plant or animal, we become more focused and lost in the moment. The result? We become more mindful, which tremendously improves our overall wellbeing. Another way citizen science boosts our mood is through the act of volunteering — we feel better when we give back to others and our community.
Whether your family wants to get involved by surveying your own backyard or join a more organized group like a school nature or science club, there are programs for kids of all ages and abilities. Check with your county or Florida’s Department of Natural Resources for ways to get involved locally or look up one of these national opportunities:
DATABASES: CitizenScience.gov: This searchable database provides a government-wide listing of citizen science projects. SciStarter: Provides a database of more than 3,000 vetted projects and events searchable by location, topic, interest and more. Zooniverse: The world’s largest and most popular platform for peoplepowered volunteer research.
PROJECTS: Audubon Christmas Bird Count: Initiated in 1900, this is the nation’s longest-running citizen science bird project. The bird count runs from December 14 through January 5 each year. Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Offers several bird-related
iStock | Halfpoint
According to researchers Karen Makuch and Miriam Aczel, citizen science projects also benefit both the physical and mental development of children and lead to increased levels of environmental stewardship and protection. They explain that part of this results from children being part of a team and community, having a purpose and role and being involved in a structured activity. These types of experiences tend to boost self-confidence, advance self-efficacy and improve mental health in general.

citizen science programs, including NestWatch, Project FeederWatch, and Great Backyard Bird Count. FrogWatch USA: This is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in which participants report the mating calls of local frogs and toads. Monarch Watch from University of Kansas: This involves tagging and tracking migrating monarch butterflies during their annual North American migration. National Geographic BioBlitz: This event focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time to get a snapshot of biodiversity. Project BudBurst: With climate change being its focus, this project involves monitoring the leafing, flowering and fruiting of plants.
5 Questions to Ask During Teacher Conferences Make the most of your next face-to-face meeting Words by Rebecca Hastings iStock | Sturti
1. What’s an area of strength for my child? This question focuses on your child specifically while still allowing the teacher to evaluate all subjects. Sometimes parents find this answer surprising as kids can show different abilities in the classroom than at home. If you hear something new from the teacher, then you’ll know to give your child opportunities at home to hone this strength. 2. If you could pick one area to focus on improving for my child, what would it be? Sometimes it is difficult to think about all areas of learning at once. Focusing on improving one area at a time helps define the priorities within the classroom. It also gives something concrete to work on at home. This is an inquiry that you can follow up on throughout the year, and if progress is made, you can shift the focus to another area that’s a work in progress. 3. How does my child contribute to the class atmosphere?
The school year is just kicking off, but fall parent/ teacher conferences are around the corner. As a parent, I get excited about those 15 minutes I have one-on-one with my child’s teacher — it’s a chance to hear about my child's progress, struggles and strengths through more than just a homework worksheet. Starting the conference with specific questions in mind helps you and the teacher focus on your individual child. While areas of study covered or assessment scores can be discussed quickly, you should be prepared to ask about and discuss other areas of your child’s progress. Addressing the following questions will give both you and the teacher a better understanding of your child throughout the year.
This may seem like an unusual question, but it can provide a lot of information. Different personalities shine in different ways independently, but as you blend 20 of those unique personalities together, new things can be revealed. The answer to this will give you an idea of how much your child contributes to class discussions or tell you what a great helper they are. Maybe you’ll discover that your child follows directions well, models good behavior for other students or even that they provide funny ideas to give everyone a laugh. This is especially useful to understand as kids approach middle school, and issues like popularity can impact their learning experience. 4. Who does my child work well with? Giving the teacher the opportunity to look at the social element of learning is just as important as the academics. This can be a good barometer of how a child is doing socially. Understanding who your child is able to work well with at school will help create a more successful learning environment. 5. Do you have any concerns about my child? This question can never be asked too often. Sometimes we are so busy getting through the list of assessments, reading levels and academic achievement that we can miss the bigger picture. Giving both teachers and parents the pause to consider any areas of concern emotionally, socially or developmentally addresses the whole child in their learning environment and allows you to support them in whatever means necessary.

5 Simple Tweaks to Make Your Home Montessori-Friendly These design ideas are equal parts eye-catching and educational. Words by Kristen Brzoza | Photos by Arlene Laboy
I love working with families and showing them how, with a few small changes, the Montessori philosophy can make an immediate impact on their child’s play. Children learn best in a clutter-free environment with a limited number of toys and activities available. No matter if you have a playroom or a designated corner of your living room, a prepared environment can be a meaningful place that brings joy and meets your little one’s developmental needs. When materials, books and toys are easily accessible, your child can gravitate toward their interests, giving them autonomy over their learning and play. Here are five simple ways to incorporate a Montessori approach into your own home:
What is Montessori?
#1
Opt for Open, Low Shelving
Ideally, anything in your space will promote independence, and that includes where your toys and activities are located. In traditional playrooms, it’s typical to see large bins or baskets containing a mix of toys all thrown together. It may seem like these bins lead to organization, but it’s too many choices — something that can easily distract little ones. By displaying toys individually on an open shelf, it allows your child to see exactly what’s available, entices them to engage and shows them where items belong when it’s time to put them away.
Developed by an Italian physician, this educational philosophy lets children lead the way in how they develop, learn and interact with the world around them. The approach, which can be applied both at home and in the classroom, fosters independence, citizenship and accountability. 20 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sept 2021
#3
Choose a Forward-Facing Bookshelf
It’s important to have books available at a child’s level so they can easily access them. Since younger kids can’t read, a low shelf or ledge allows them to see the cover and prevents them from dumping books on the floor if they’re searching for a specific one. Try to keep the number of books minimal to make cleanup more manageable, and add a few floor cushions or a child-sized chair to create an inviting reading nook.
#2
Invest in Natural Wooden Toys
One of the most noticeable things you will find in a Montessori environment is how soothing, calm and minimal the space feels. When it comes to toys, there is a lack of bright colors, flashing lights or loud sounds. Features like these offer immediate gratification, but they also tend to limit problem-solving skills and imaginative play. Montessori toys are often made of natural materials like wood, so they are beautiful, durable and tactile. Because the outside world can often lead to overstimulation and constant input, toys that promote a more peaceful and sustained play space can be wonderfully beneficial to a child’s development.
#5
Set Up a Functional Kitchen
Pretend kitchens are a mainstay in most play spaces, but in the Montessori world, we take it up a notch by encouraging children to actively prepare food and drink for themselves. By giving access to a small water source, even young toddlers can independently get a drink whenever they need to. Small dishes, utensils and rags for cleanup provide all the materials necessary to make a snack or wipe up spills. This is an easy Ikea hack, but many play kitchens can be modified to function similarly.

Provide Gross Motor Opportunities
If space allows, provide an area for indoor physical activity and climbing since babies and toddlers were made to move. By giving them a “yes” place to do that, we encourage their gross motor skills while also providing them an area to explore safely. Another perk: It redirects those babes who love to climb the coffee table or other off-limits furniture. A good starting point is a Pikler triangle. It’s a favorite play structure because it encourages little ones to challenge their physical skills at their own pace. Kids begin using it by pulling to stand, move on to climbing and eventually navigate scaling the top. It gives children confidence in their own abilities independent of their parents.

Is Flex Learning the Future of Education? Words by Betsy Jewell
What you need to know about this nontraditional way of schooling Last school year, parents had to make difficult choices about their children's mode of schooling: face-to-face, virtual or a hybrid of the two. Some families opted to homeschool instead. While many families are eager to get their kids back to full-time face-toface learning, others are turning toward a flex learning model again this year. Simply put, flex learning provides students the freedom to choose how, what, where and when they learn. Parents choose this format through Florida Virtual School or by registering as homeschoolers through their school district. Thanks to a continuing surge of flexible learning options, Central Florida families have a plethora of educational and enrichment opportunities available right in their own backyards.

FEATURE | Flex Learning Now, they have the ability to work based on their availability, significantly reducing the family’s stress. “We were so caught up in the ‘public schools race’ and jam-packed schedules that I’ve had to train my brain differently,” Michelle admits about the transition.

If you were to ask Mandy Pacheco to describe her family’s homeschooling environment, her reply would include “car schooling,” “Panera schooling,” and “wherever we happen to be schooling.” Mandy and her children, Jules (15) and Trey (12), have successfully navigated the flex learning space for years and continue to evaluate and adjust as needed with each new school year.
Having spent the first few months of school last year in a constant state of uncertainty, Michelle Forrestal decided to enroll her boys, Reid (13) and Miles (11), in the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) Flex program after their winter break. Michelle was apprehensive at first. She is not a teacher and was concerned that her boys’ academic progress would suffer. In search of solidarity, she joined multiple Facebook groups to seek out other parents in FLVS Flex, and it was within these virtual forums that she found an invaluable community of support. Over the next few months, it became clear to both Michelle and her boys that they had made the right decision. The benefits were obvious: The boys were able to learn at their own pace, and their interaction with their FLVS teachers was a dream come true. Michelle has continued to see a huge improvement in her boys’ engagement and performance. “In a public school setting, Reid would rarely raise his hand or participate in class. Now he can text, email and call his teachers as often as needed, and they respond quickly and thoughtfully,” she explains. Flex learning has also taken the pressure off trying to strike the right balance between school and life. The Forrestal children are involved with extracurricular activities like music and competitive cheer, so in the past, they had to rush from school to practices and competitions, and in turn, stay up late to complete assignments due the following day.

One of the reasons the Pacheco family first embarked on a flexible learning path was because Jules is on the autism spectrum and has been diagnosed with dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. Despite her diagnosis, Jules is thriving in her art classes at the Florida Film Academy in Winter Garden, and she has already completed 12 dual enrollment college credits.
N
Parents should keep in mind that they don’t need to be experts in order for flex learning to be successful. While Mandy has a Ph.D. in education and teaches at the University of Central Florida, she maintains that her role as a flex learning mom is more to facilitate, not necessarily to teach. For example, Mandy knew she wasn’t the best person to teach writing to her children. As a solution, she hired a tutor, a former NASA technical writer, who has been certified in the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) method. Lessons take place on a 20-acre cow farm, and the kids couldn’t be happier. When it comes to planning curriculum, Mandy recommends involving kids in the process. “Include your child when deciding how, when, and where they will learn because together you will be able to choose what works best,” she advises. Jules has a varied schedule that includes activities like dance, printmaking, drawing, and volunteering with the public library. Trey belongs to a fencing club and a paintball team and participates in First Lego League. Mandy believes that these experiences offer opportunities for Jules and Trey to thrive outside of a traditional classroom setting.
LE AR NI N G
If you can relate to either Michelle or Mandy’s stories, your family may be ready to make the leap into the world of flex learning. Luckily, Central Florida offers options for just about any subject or area of interest. For example, if your child is science-minded, check out Mad Science of NE Central Florida’s homeschool offerings for kids of all ages. Their mission is to inspire children through science, sparking lifelong imagination and curiosity. “Be sure to keep mixing in different opportunities for kids to work together in groups and face-to-face,” advises Kylie Koscoe, owner and “Chief Mad Scientist” of the program. “Find out how your child learns best, and then make sure [your choices] are continuing to benefit them.” For children with an interest in wildlife and ecology, The Central Florida Zoo has worked with the homeschool community for over 20 years delivering interactive Zooventures for kids, teens and adults. With over 40 different species of animals, a natural wetland habitat, a botanical garden and a partnership with Florida Fish and Wildlife, there’s something for everyone at the zoo. “We really are where the classroom comes to life. We provide exciting opportunities through hands-on experiences for individuals, groups and families,” says Dawn Danzi, the zoo’s education manager. Another important aspect to consider when choosing a flex curriculum is its long-term or real-world benefits. Take Code Ninjas in Waterford Lakes. “No matter what path children choose in life, technology will be a part of their world. Coding is the new
Mad Science of Central Florida

literacy,” says owner Ieshah Geary. Kids ages 5 through 14 can learn to code at their own pace via fun and familiar video game platforms, like Minecraft, Roblox and YouTube. No matter what their proficiency level — at Code Ninjas this is measured in belt colors, much like martial arts — students will learn different coding concepts and languages. Younger children who are unable to read begin with blockbased code and advance later to languages. Once a student reaches the black belt level, they have a chance to develop their own app and publish it to the Apple or Google app store, providing an opportunity for kids to self-direct their learning while creating something tangible. While interacting with animals at the zoo or coding in front of a computer all day may sound like all fun and games to many parents, at the end of the day, flex learning is still learning. It's important to keep in mind that flex schooling can have its own challenges. First, children need to be able to work independently and be self-motivated to complete their work, even in subjects they don’t enjoy. Parents will have to spend time educating their children at home or driving them to their learning locations. Most importantly, parents who choose to customize their kids’ flex learning path using nontraditional programs and curriculum will need to comply with state laws to ensure their children are showing educational progress each year. More information, including the Home-Education Program Florida Statute 1002.41, can be found on the Florida Parent Educators Association website at fpea.com/homeschooling.requirements.

Is This School? Forget what you heard on the news — this is what it was really like to be a high schooler in the midst of a global pandemic. Words by Isabel Tongson
They say junior year is the
most rigorous one of your high school years. Grades are of the utmost importance thanks to the imminent college application process, counselors make it their mission to show you how to entertain schools of interest, and as upperclassmen, you take on the responsibility of being the life of the party at homecoming and prom. In a typical year, these duties are trying enough, but for juniors like me, a global pandemic made things infinitely more challenging. My class was tossed between online and in-person learning, the cancellation of college tours has us applying nearly blind to campuses, and our school functions were significantly lacking student smiles. However, through everything, I was lucky to have some amazing friends … to complain to. Junior year was tough, but taking time to ensure I maintained friendships ended up being healthy and soothing — quite possibly the only thing soothing about being in high school during Covid-19. As soon as I logged into my first virtual class during my sophomore year in spring 2020 (remember that time when everyone thought the pandemic would last two weeks?), I knew I would not absorb everything that I was supposed to through a screen. This was the entire school’s first taste at remote learning, and reactions varied more than I thought they would. A majority of kids, including myself, did enjoy the extra hour of sleep in the morning, but as soon as the teachers started asking everyone to turn their cameras on, we knew we were in for a rough period. Some teachers continued on with their prepared lessons, expecting us to take in the same amount of information as we would in person, while the rest were uncertain of whether it was even worth beginning new topics when students clearly needed to be physically present to perform experiments or give presentations. This mass precariousness put students in a numb state, and collectively the student body decided we just needed to get through these last few months no matter how many technical glitches it took. Luckily, by the start of junior year, teachers were more prepared. Students were offered a choice between online and in-person learning, and I knew I needed the latter. As I sat in class properly
masked, I watched my teachers attempt to include virtual students by navigating what they called “techno-gymnastics” aka switching from one tab to another while sharing their screen. Thankfully, my teachers were sympathetic to this weird new learning frontier; they adjusted assignment due dates or altered instructions altogether. A handful of my friends weren’t so lucky. Some even had assignments marked late due to honest technical difficulties, and there was nothing they could do to fix it — something that many parents didn’t fully understand or believe. Just because we know when we’re presenting on a Google Meet doesn’t mean we have supreme control over our house’s WiFi. Thankfully, there were moments where my friends and I had fun without the normalcy we’d come to miss. Since we weren’t allowed to eat inside classrooms, every day (well, at least the ones that it didn’t rain) we picnicked in the quad, which was a Covid perk that I hope continues. With the lack of mass assemblies, the ParentTeacher Association was able to plan outdoor breaks between classes where students could grab cookies, candy and sometimes even ice cream. And on top of it all, my school successfully hosted a prom at the Orlando Science Center, a feat many students marveled at. Though the photobooth pictures feature us wearing masks that matched our dresses and suits, it was worth experiencing my first prom — PPE and all.
Though the photobooth pictures feature us wearing masks that matched our dresses and suits, it was worth experiencing my first prom — PPE and all. While it seems we’re on the other side of all this, I think students would benefit from their parents being understanding of just how strange these circumstances have been, no matter if you were a physical or virtual student. Parents, teachers and students alike are working through the challenges of education in an online or hybrid format, so understanding each other’s pressures will make the pandemic a little more bearable for us all. That’s why it’s important for students to have a voice in the decision-making process — after all, we’re the ones living it. As I’m about to start my senior year this fall, I know it won’t be totally normal, but I believe it will be a bittersweet ending to an unprecedented high school career. Students should be proud of how far they’ve come and most definitely should not give up hope for the school year to come.

Shake Up Your Saturday Night Three new(ish) spots worth the drive downtown Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin
While you may think of Downtown Orlando as a place you went clubbing in your pre-kid days, it has much more to offer than crowded dive bars and bottle service. To show you what we mean, PLAYGROUND put together a perfect itinerary for a child-free evening with your partner or for a girls’ night out:
Stop 1: GET CRAFTY Artifact Candle Foundry For a little pre-cocktail hour fun, head to this DIY candle-making bar in Thornton Park. Smell your way through 90 different natural fragrance oils ranging from classics like grapefruit and vanilla bean to more unique scents like Dad’s Den and wasabi. Then create a one-of-a-kind blend with the help of Artifact’s skilled candle experts. Once you’ve settled on a sniff-worthy fragrance profile, turn it into a soy wax candle, diffuser oil, room and linen spray, body mist or pure oil concentrate.
Stop 2: WATCH THE SUNSET AC Sky Bar Located in the newly opened AC Hotel Orlando Downtown, this open-air rooftop bar is an ideal place to watch the sunset over the City Beautiful. The only thing better than the view is the signature cocktails — must-sips include the Tropical Mezcal, the Sangria Spritz and the S’mores Old Fashioned. There’s also live music, fire pits and a Spanish-inspired tapas menu.
Stop 3: INDULGE IN A NIGHT CAP The Robinson Café & Cocktail Lounge If you want to keep the party going, take a walk over to The Robinson’s Cocktail Room. Created by the people behind Mathers Social Gathering just a few doors down, this second-floor watering hole exudes a Miami vibe with its chic (not to mention Instagrammable) interior outfitted with plush couches and barstools, exposed brick walls and Art Deco-inspired décor. All the cocktails are created by their skilled mixologists, so expect exciting flavor combinations and the freshest ingredients.

Family Game Night & Snack Pairings
Go full theme ahead with these fun board games and matching treats! Words by Malia Jacobson
40 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sept 2021
Bringing everyone together for a game night is one of life’s simple pleasures. But after a long pandemic year of rolling the same dice or shuffling the same cards, you may be feeling less than inspired.
The Oregon Trail: Journey to Willamette Valley + Trail Mix Number of players: Up to 4 Best for: Ages 14+ Play Time: 60+ minutes
One way to avoid board games becoming bored games is to invest in a new game (or two!) and pair it with on-theme food. Here are eight parenttested game picks and snack ideas to inspire new rounds of play and plenty of memories:
If the idea of loading up a covered wagon for a perilous journey out west seems familiar, it should: this game is based on the iconic Oregon Trail computer game many parents played as kids. This updated, no-screens-required version sends players on a similar westward journey as they hunt for food, manage limited wagon space, and fend off threats from disease to animal attacks. Enjoy swimming in nostalgia — just watch out for drowning hazards — while munching on a homemade trail mix that the pioneers themselves would trade supplies for.
Chickapig: A Farm to Table Game + Crunchy Veggies and Dip Number of players: 2 or 4 Best for: Ages 8+ Play Time: 30–60 minutes This classic family board game feels as fresh as farm produce with its simple design, wooden game pieces and organic, folksy appeal. A collaboration between game creator Brian Calhoun and musician Dave Matthews, this strategy game features fantastical creatures, hay bales and enough manure to keep kids giggling. Whether your kiddos are into barnyard animals or you’re a huge DMB fan, this game is best played with a side of fresh farm veggies like carrots, radishes and sugar snap peas (and a delicious dip or two).
Sleeping Queens + Cookies and Milk Number of players: Up to 5 Best for: Ages 8+ Play Time: 20 minutes When it’s been a long week and you’re beat, remember that family game night doesn’t need to last for hours or drain every last bit of your energy. Sleeping Queens is a blessedly brief card game for the grade-school set that was invented by an imaginative 6-year-old. Play multiple rounds or keep it short and sweet with a single 20-minute session — the perfect amount of time to indulge in cookies and milk before bed. 41 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sept 2021

The game takes players on a cross-country train adventure, where longer routes equal more points. Devoted riders can expand their collections with the 1910 expansion set or the Ticket to Ride Europe edition. As any frequent traveler knows, you also need food for your journey, so dish up travel-friendly items like popcorn or pretzels.
Poetry for Neanderthals + Chicken Wings Number of players: 2 or 4 Best for: Ages 7+ Play Time: 15 minutes Fans of the uproarious Exploding Kittens card game will recognize its signature irreverent illustrations in Poetry for Neanderthals. This competitive word-guessing game takes just a few minutes to learn, so you can spend less time explaining the rules and more time cracking up together. With each round taking just 15 minutes, you can play more than once or squeeze in a quick game night before tuck-in. Eat like a Neanderthal with chicken wings or bowls of nuts and dried fruits that you can pretend you foraged from the backyard.

Q&U Wedding Fundraiser If you have a rising pre-K student, your child may be attending a wedding this fall. No, it’s not for a relative or a friend — it’s a celebration for two of the letters of the alphabet: Q and U. Not only is this schoolyard ceremony a fun way to teach children about the QU spelling rule, but at Park Maitland School, it’s also a chance to give to others. Twelve years ago, Pierce O’Lenick suggested that everyone in attendance at Park Maitland’s QU wedding bring a gift to donate to hospitalized kids. To this day, all the wedding gifts go to Central Florida’s AdventHealth for Children. Pierce is heading off to college this fall, and he’s happy to see this tradition of giving continue.
