My 2-year-old daughter is starting a preschool program this month, and while she’ll only be there a few days a week, my mama heart already feels full of excitement and nerves for her. 10 Spelling & Reading Games for Kids Check out these fun ways to develop essential skills outside the classroom. Words by Kimberly Blaker

Kids work hard on developing their reading and spelling skills at school, but some of the best learning happens during play. When children play, they engage deeply with the content and even remember and understand it better. Try these games to boost spelling and reading skills through engaging, interactive play.

Context Clues Pirate Treasure is aimed at reading levels 2.0–3.5 (grades 2–3). Players read story cards and answer comprehension questions using context clues to move around the board in hopes of being the first to reach the treasure.

Inference School Days focuses on inference skills (a conclusion reached through evidence and reasoning). The blue level is for reading levels 3.5–5.0 (grades 3–5). Players use inference to answer questions on the story cards and make their way through elementary school and all the way to college to earn their diploma.

Dabble is a spelling and vocabulary game for ages 8+, but also great for family game night. Each player gets letter tiles and tries to arrange them into five words of various lengths before the time runs out.

Play on Words is a spelling card game for ages 8+ that’s perfect for on-the-go fun. Players use letter cards to spell words but can change, rearrange and steal to make the game more challenging.

My First Bananagrams is a less challenging version of the beloved classic. Targeting early learners as young as age 4, this game uses letter combo tiles and lowercase letter tiles designed to make word creation easier for younger players.

Phone Games iTooch offers multi-subject educational apps designed by grade level (grades 1–8). It aligns with Common Core standards and has engaging activities and games to promote learning. Spark Reading for Kids helps children in grades 2–8 to work on reading comprehension. Learners choose their favorite topics from fiction and nonfiction content and then take tests to assess their understanding. Spellbee is a spelling and vocabulary app for kids in grades 1–9. Learners can play games and study words by grade level or topic to develop spelling skills and compete on a global leaderboard. Khan Academy and Khan Academy Kids offer lessons by grade, topic or age, including language arts with spelling and reading comprehension. A+ Spelling Bee English Words is an app for young learners to work on spelling skills. Learners can choose difficulty and mode, then drag letters to make the word for the picture.

Fresh Lunchbox Ideas Tired of packing the same sandwich every day? Here are some alternatives to make lunchtime more fun. Words by Amanda Keefer at Healthy Family Project

A couple of words come to mind when planning back-to-school meals: quick, tasty and nutritious. Now that it’s time to get back on a daily schedule, hit refresh on your grocery list to get the family excited about new flavors and foods. Healthy Family Project, a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering a healthy next generation, offers 100+ lunchbox ideas, all approved by a registered dietitian. Here are a few fan favorites: t A ntipasti Pesto Tortellini These simple skewers can be prepared in just 20 minutes and are easily prepped the night before. • Cook tortellini according to package instructions. We like tricolor tortellini — the different colors make the skewers more fun! • Once cooked and drained, drizzle with olive oil, toss and set aside. • Set out the other ingredients. Anything goes, but we like a combo of cherry tomatoes, cubed mozzarella and a protein option like sliced salami, turkey or cubed chicken. • Have kids assemble the ingredients on bamboo skewers. • Drizzle the finished skewers with pesto or pack it on the side for dipping.

While you can’t go wrong with plain cream cheese, try experimenting with another type like strawberry. • Dice fruit (such as clementine mandarins, kiwis, blueberries and strawberries). • Let kids create fun designs by placing the fruit pieces on top of the cream cheese.

Rainbow Bento Box u This customizable lunchbox superstar can be tailored to the pickiest tastebuds. • Swap out a regular lunchbox for a sectioned bento box-inspired one. It’ll instantly make presentation more fun. Amazon has lots of reusable options like Lunchbots, EasyLunchboxes and Bentgo. • Place ingredients into the box to mimic a rainbow. Six Types of Primary Education Words by Kimberly Blaker One of the most critical decisions parents make for their kids is where to send them to school. A child's educational path influences them in many ways. It is the starting point of their learning career and where they spend most of their time, engage in multiple relationships and have formative experiences. There are many types of schools to consider, each with unique offerings and resources for students. To choose the most fitting school experience for your child, consider your child's personality, interests and individual needs as well as what's best for your family as a whole. Keep in mind, what works for one child doesn't necessarily work for another. Research your options beforehand to have a clear idea of what factors are most important to you and your child. Look for online reviews while bearing in mind that reviews can be manipulated, such as by offering incentives for reviews. Explore the school website and social media pages to see what they offer, then ask to take a tour or observe a class. Most importantly, speak to parents, students and teachers about their experiences at the school.

The private school was teaching science out of a book, so we didn’t choose that one. 1. Public School Public schools are free, open to all students, operated by school districts and funded by taxpayers. According to NationalSchoolChoiceWeek.com, Florida spends an average of $9,937 per public school pupil each year. Public schools are held to specified standards, as governed by the Florida Legislature. PROS: Because public schools are tied to the government, there is a certain amount of oversight and standards to which they must adhere. All teachers must meet the qualifications set by the State and use an approved curriculum. According to the Florida Department of Education, an amendment to the Florida Constitution limits the maximum number of students in core classes to 18 students in grades pre-K–3 and 22 students in grades 4–8. The Florida Legislature has required each school district to develop a controlled open enrollment plan, which allows parents to choose to send their child to any school in the state that has not reached capacity. CONS: The funding and therefore the quality of public schools can vary significantly from one community to the next. Many public schools are currently experiencing teacher and bus driver shortages. Public schools tend to have larger student body populations than other types of schools and may not be able to offer the level of individualized attention or the nurturing environment that some parents are looking for. 17 PLAYGROUND Aug / Sep 2022

2. Charter School Charter schools are a form of public school, but they are allowed more flexibility to explore alternative approaches and curricula. This type of school is usually founded around a specific mission or charter, which guides the type of educational experience offered. Charter schools are publicly funded, so they are free of charge, but they generally have an application and lottery process to determine who gets in.

CONS: If a charter school is not performing well, it risks being shut down, which can create more pressure on student achievement. Charter schools do not typically offer busing and can be located far from the student’s neighborhood, which makes after-school and weekend socialization more challenging. Also, like public schools, charter schools are required to administer standardized tests.

3. Magnet School Another choice under the public school umbrella is a magnet school. These schools have a specific focus, such as the arts, music, science or technology. Unlike charter schools, magnet schools do still fall under the same government regulations as traditional public schools. PROS: If your child has a particular interest or strength, a magnet school focused on that interest can help them develop related skills. These schools receive additional outside funding through grants and donations to help support their programs and offer more targeted development of their specific area of focus. CONS: Admission to elementary magnet schools is limited and therefore competitive. Some schools use a lottery, some have a limited number of zoned seats, while others have an application and even testing or examination processes to determine who qualifies.

PROS: Charter schools are often a good alternative for families looking for a smaller student population or more individualized attention. Charter schools tend to have more flexibility in their curriculum and approach. They are particularly suited to gifted students or those with specific learning styles or abilities. Because charter schools have more budgeting flexibility, some are able to offer their teachers higher salaries than traditional public schools are able to offer.

Our daughter excelled with structure, and the school uniforms weeded out any distractions that more liberal dress codes may cause. Bringing in children from all over the county allowed for a more diverse culture in the classroom, broadening our daughter’s exposure and acceptance to things that are different than the way she was raised. 4. Private School

The government does not fund private schools; families must pay tuition for students to attend. Private schools also are not held to the same regulations as public schools. Some private schools subscribe to a specific educational philosophy, such as the Montessori or Waldorf philosophies. Others are associated with a particular religion. A parochial school is a type of religious school that is connected directly to a local church. PROS: Parents pay the tuition, so they are able to provide more input on their child’s education. Families can find a school that is more aligned with their beliefs. Private schools usually have smaller enrollment than public schools and a strong community.

CONS: Private schools are often expensive. They also do not have the same level of government oversight as public schools, so it is up to parents to make sure the school has independent accreditations. Some religious schools may choose a curriculum that omits certain science and history lessons that don't align with their beliefs.

Although we loved our public elementary school and the community and neighborhood feeling of it, it was also very large. As my children got older, we wanted to have them educated in a smaller environment with more attention on them individually so we could better understand the type of learners they were. 5. Virtual School Technology has led to the availability of virtual schools. These online schools offer a variety of educational opportunities, including full-time study or supplemental classes to add to a traditional or home schooling education. Classes and schoolwork can be done anywhere there's internet access, and students still have one or more teachers with lessons that follow a curriculum and defined standards. Many public high school students are required to take at least one virtual class (on or off campus) before they graduate.

CONS: Virtual schools require a lot of self-discipline, and students and families are responsible for keeping up with their education. They also lack the same in-person social opportunities for community or friendships, which may cause students to feel isolated if they are not involved in other extracurricular activities.

6. Home School The number of families choosing home schooling is growing at a record pace. The Florida Department of Education reports that home school enrollment was at 152,109 students in the 2020–21 school year. More families are taking education into their own hands and creating a dynamic curriculum that includes in-person classes or co-ops, online classes, travel and unit studies at home. There are even private hybrid schools that provide a home school curriculum plus two or three days of on-campus learning. PROS: In Central Florida, a plethora of organizations support the home schooling community through special classes and enrichment programs. This is the most specialized type of education for any child. Parents can customize their child’s curriculum exactly to their needs, building on their strengths and targeting their weaknesses.

PROS: Virtual schools are a good option for students who do not want to be confined to a “brick and mortar” school and predetermined schedule. Students have more flexibility and can learn at their own pace. Learning through virtual schools can also provide more educational opportunities or access to specialized classes. If a child is enrolled in full-time FLVS, they are still welcome to attend extracurricular programs at their zoned public school.

Ultimately, we decided that the flexibility and freedom of homeschool is what works best for our family. CONS: Home schooling can be overwhelming for parents because there’s no playbook. There are so many different styles and approaches, so each family must use trial and error to truly find their best fit. It takes time, research and patience. Also, Florida does not subsidize home school education, so it can be more expensive than public school because families have to buy or create their own curriculum.

When my family was invited to experience the newly minted Disney Wish ship this past July, we knew we were in for an unparalleled experience. After a three-night sail to the Bahamas, here are my 25 reasons why you should set sail on this opulent vessel for your next family vacation: Words by Heather Reneau | Photos by Disney Cruise Line 1.

A Royal Greeting. Experience an entrance fit for royalty. Your family’s surname will be announced as you board the ship, accept your magic wands and wave to beloved Disney characters perched in the balcony of the Grand Hall.

A Truly Enchanted Interior. The Wish is Disney’s most stunning ship to date, thanks to the designers’ overall theme of enchantment. There are jaw-dropping chandeliers, twinkling ceilings, hidden Disney characters and secret meanings woven into carpets and wall décor — plus many other luxe details that only one mouse can create.

Impeccable Service. While the ship’s over-the-top design is impressive, the service is what truly sets this experience in a class by itself. The entire crew delivers incredible service, but our room and meal stewards took it to the next level.

Upgraded Luxury. The Disney Wish has increased the number of Concierge-Level accommodations available, offering more than any other ship in the fleet. These cabins

include access to the Concierge Lounge, an extra-large indoor space with a full bar, snacks and character meetand-greets. Additionally, this exclusive spot has an outdoor terrace and private sundeck. Concierge-Level upgrades include priority check-in and boarding, free Wi-Fi and first dibs for onboard reservations and port excursions. 6.

Suites Fit for a Storybook. For those really looking for a dream vacay, there are three grand suites that rise above all others. The luxurious Royal Suites are two-story palaces inspired by Princess Aurora. But the grandest of all is the Wish Tower Suite, which sits high above everyone else because it’s located in the ship’s faux center funnel (those red towers that look like smokestacks) and overlooks the upper decks. This Moana-themed suite is 2,000 sq. ft., with four bedrooms and four and a half baths — it even has its own private entrance and elevator. Every detail is lavish and desirable, making this suite enchanted indeed.

Interactive Dining. The Wish has even turned dinner into an immersive show. Arendelle: A Frozen Dinner Adventure puts you right in the middle of Anna and Kristoff’s engagement celebration with sing-alongs, tableside character greetings and a parade. Worlds of Marvel is a cinematic dinner experience inspired by The Avengers, with Ant-Man and The Wasp leading the show through family missions enabled by the Quantum Core centerpiece at each dinner table.

On the upper deck, there’s Mickey & Friends Festival of Food, an outdoor food court with grab-and-go grub from Mickey’s Smokestack Barbeque, Donald’s Cantina (burritos, tacos and bowls), Daisy’s Pizza Pie, Goofy’s Grill (dogs, burgers, tenders) and Sweet Minnie’s (unlimited soft-serve ice cream). Plus, cruisers can hit Marceline Market, a cafeteria-style eatery for breakfast, lunch or dinner. 9. Complimentary Room Service. Everyone gets excited for room service that’s included in the cost of the cruise. Make it an exciting event for the kids by getting Mickey ice cream bars delivered!

10. The Oceaneer’s Club. At this magical hangout for children ages 3–12, it’s a toss-up on what’s the best part: no parents allowed, the two-story slide entrance or all the fun activities that range from the Marvel Super Hero Academy and The Fairytale Hall to the Imagineer Lab and Star Wars Cargo Bay. 11. Tweens and Teens Can Chill. The Wish didn’t overlook the tween and teen sailors. Edge is designed for kids ages 11–14, offering games, a snack bar and counselors who are a lot cooler than mom and dad. Vibe is the exclusive teen lounge area for ages 14–17. The Hideaway is a third flex-space also just for tweens and teens. 12. Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party. On one of the nights, everyone heads to the upper decks for a pirate takeover. It’s a bit late in the evening, so have the kids nap that day so they don’t miss this musical performance followed by spectacular fireworks that are exclusive to Disney Cruise Line. It’s quite impressive!

13. A Trip to Disney’s Private Island. Spend a day at Castaway Cay pretending you’re the real-life Swiss Family Robinson. Snorkel, swim, slide, bike, boat, eat, drink, relax and even book a stingray encounter if you’re feeling adventurous! Disney's private paradise is also a great spot for family photos with the Disney Wish in the background adorned with Rapunzel on the stern. 14. Explore the Bahamas. While you’re docked in Nassau, you can get off the ship to explore the nearby straw market, historical buildings and local eateries. You can also book an excursion, such as a trip to Atlantis or Blue Lagoon Island or a Jeep tour. DCL offers lots of excursions, but you can also save money by doing some research and booking activities on your own.

15. Exclusive Adults-Only Havens. The ship is designed so that parents can get a reprieve while the kids are having the time of their lives. Disney has provided several kid-free sanctuaries, ranging from upscale bars and lounges to the Quiet Cove pool, Senses Spa and restaurants like Palo and Enchanté. If you’re only going to budget for one upgrade, get an $80 day pass to the Rainforest Room (and outdoor terrace) inside the Senses Spa. 16. Out-of-This-World Bar. Party like a Jedi in the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge that serves up other-worldly drinks with a giant window to outer space behind the bar! Guests can watch spaceships cruise by as they travel through space at warp speed. 17. Get a Makeover. The Disney Wish is a prime place for primping for all guests. The Untangled Salon (get it?) is the perfect place for manis, pedis, haircuts and styles as well as skincare treatments. Dapper dudes will enjoy upscale grooming services, a bourbon bar and their own leather pedicure chair at this sophisticated barbery fit for a captain. Line’s first ever “attraction at sea,” the AquaMouse isn’t your average waterslide. Before getting into the two-person raft, there’s a series of cartoons that set the scene for your impending journey.

19. Pools, Pools and More Pools! There are places to cool off

all around the Disney Wish, ranging from a Toy Story Splash Zone for the tiniest of tots to the party vibes at the cluster of six pools in the family area. Plus, my favorite hidden gem, Chip ‘N Dale’s pool tucked away on deck 14 at the very front of the ship. The Quiet Cove infinity pool is adults-only with a gorgeous view off the stern.

20. Fam-Friendly Competition. See who in your family has what

it takes to be crowned champ on the Incredi-Course, a giant inflatable obstacle course that is set up during various times in the Hero Zone.

21. Disney Characters Abound. Characters are everywhere

Participants fill your FE with little Disney gifts for your kids, and you do the same — it’s another way to add a little extra magic to your Disney Wish adventure.

Zainab Oueslati When 8-year-old Zainab saw how challenging ice skating is, she decided to make it her sport. Zainab, who started training two years ago, doesn’t just stick to the traditional moves. Instead, she’s happiest when she’s interpreting songs in her own style with her coach’s support. Zainab homeschools with her parents while continuing to work hard on her axel jumps at Kissimmee’s Ice Factory of Orlando. Her dream? To be the first person from Tunisia to compete in the Winter Olympics. “I want to say to Muslim girls, don’t let anything hold you back… Muslim girls can do anything they dream of,” says Zainab.

At 14, Reagan is already an incredible soccer player, entrepreneur with almost 1,000 Instagram followers and a YouTuber who prides herself on creating a familyfriendly channel. She balances it all by putting 100% into everything she does. “I’m a night owl,” Reagan explains. “I usually come home from school, edit for my business or channel, then practice soccer and start my homework.” Reagan studies athletics and academics at XL Academy in Winter Park and wants to play for the U.S. Woman’s National Team one day. When she’s not on the field, she’s busy building her YouTube channel, The 3 S’s, which is dedicated to soccer, surfing and skateboarding. Reagan and her best friend, Avery McDonald, are also building an accessories business. Analia Rivera Analia was just a little tike when she first walked into Broadway Gymnastics in Oviedo, and she hasn’t looked back since. Now at age 8, she recently won first place in the All-Around competition and took home the top spot for each individual event as well. While she trains 13 hours a week to work toward her dream career, she also keeps busy coding, playing the piano, and drawing — all of which help her express her emotions outside of the mat. “When times get hard, you keep on pushing. I’m not afraid to fail,” says Analia.

With a tall tower, slide, and plenty of places to climb, it’s better suited for slightly older kiddos. The surrounding area also includes public water access and a huge dog park.

This park offers two playgrounds with sun-shielding awnings and a dock for fishing in Round Lake.
