What if your child’s healthcare provider had as much imagination as your child?
At Nemours, we’re on a journey to discover better ways of approaching children’s health. By putting just as much focus on prevention as we do cures. Working hand in hand with community leaders, educators and policymakers to make every child’s world a place for them to thrive. It’s what happens when you look at healthcare with a child’s imagination. Beyond the expected. Beyond limits. We believe it will lead to the healthiest generations of children who ever lived.

Ho, Ho — How is it already the holidays?! As parents, we know the next month is the most wonderful time of the year — and the most hectic. The best thing we can do is lean into the chaos and enjoy the ride, which is why this edition of PLAYGROUND is dedicated to all the things that bring us joy. Our December/January issue is fittingly home to our 9th Annual Family Favorite Awards, where we ask Central Florida parents about their go-to local places and businesses. We had a record number of responses this year, so be sure to flip to page 18 to see who fellow moms and dads crowned the best of the best in 2021. Speaking of favorites, with a name like PLAYGROUND, we figured it was time to do a story about our namesake. On page 28, Jasmin Barone shares her top picks for the must-visit playgrounds in Central Florida. As our newest contributor, Jasmin will be reporting on places kiddos will love in each issue. Other ways to get into the spirit include curling up with your kids to read a holiday book (page 14), creating DIY wrapping paper (page 16), throwing a memorable children’s Noon Year’s Eve Party (page 34) and checking out the most awe-inducing holiday light displays in the area (page 32). On behalf of everyone at PLAYGROUND, I want to wish each of you the happiest holiday season. I hope Santa brings you everything you want (I personally would love for my daughter to stop growing up so fast — she’s huge compared to this holiday photo from last year!). Looking forward to seeing you in 2022! PLAYfully,

Design Zone
This New Science Center Exhibit Explores the Creative Power of Math in Music, Sports and More! Behind every half-pipe, there’s a vert. Behind every dance mix, there’s a beat. Behind every thrill ride, there’s velocity. Design is everywhere we look and in everything we do, and math is behind it all. Design Zone is now open at Orlando Science Center with hands-on displays and activities featuring patterns, variables, scale and ratios. Experience the creative power of math by exploring how these mathematical concepts are used by artists, architects, engineers, musicians and other innovators. This exhibit is presented locally by the Macauley and Helen Dow Whiting Foundation and was produced by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and made possible by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. It highlights the relationship between mathematical thinking and the creative process in art, music and engineering. Design Zone will be on display at Orlando Science Center until January 9, 2022. What do mixing dance tracks, creating video games, and building roller coasters have in common? Math! Design Zone is focused around three thematic areas, which draw visitors into real-life scenes of music production, video game development and extreme sports that directly and experientially relate to mathematical concepts. It features over a dozen hands-on exhibit pieces allowing you to create your experience!
HEAR IT! Step into Club OSC and learn about the relationship between math and music as you learn about pitch, rhythm and audio visual representations of sound! SEE IT! Enter the Digital Design Lab and see how designers use scale, patterns, grids and more in everything from video games to architecture! MOVE IT! Roll into Action Park and discover how math and physics are behind anything that moves. Design a roller coaster, build your own skate park or race your bike to the finish line! In Design Zone, you’ll solve real-world challenges and discover that math isn’t just a subject in school—it’s one of the coolest creative tools we have to design and invent almost everything! Get more information about this exhibit and the four floors of experiences waiting for you at osc.org. COST: Design Zone is included with admission to Orlando Science Center, which is FREE for members, $21 for adults, $19 for seniors and students and $15 for youth (ages 2 – 11). Tickets include access to all four floors of exhibits, movies and live programming. Review COVID19 safety guidelines and get your timed-entry tickets at osc.org. PLAY HOLIDAY CRAFT:
DIY Wrapping Paper A very merry mess!
By Becky Vlaming, owner of Creative Jane Art Studio
‘Tis the season to get crafty! Scrape painting is a simple yet stunning way to create your own unique wrapping paper. The key to creating eye-catching patterns is choosing the right color palette. Think about colors that blend well together and won’t turn to mud if the hues get over-mixed. We used red and green for Christmas but you could also use warm tones (like reds, oranges and yellows) or cool tones (like blues and greens) to create beautiful results. No matter how the wrapping paper turns out, it’s going to get ripped up eventually — so just have fun! Materials and Tools: • Kraft or white butcher paper
• Old gift cards or credit cards
• Acrylic paint in assorted colors
How to: Step 1: Lay down a large piece of white butcher paper.
Step 2: Squirt two or three colors in dots or swirls onto the paper. Step 3: Put an old credit card or
gift card edge down at the top of your paper. Pull the card toward you through the paint without lifting the card up from the paper.
Step 4: Repeat the process,
overlapping and experimenting with how the colors blend and make patterns.
Step 5: Once your paper is full of paint and you’re satisfied with its appearance, set it aside to dry for a couple hours. Step 6: After the paper is fully dry, make rolls to give as gifts or use the paper to wrap presents for your loved ones. Creative Jane Art Studio in Winter Park gives children (and adults!) the opportunity to create with curiosity. Check out their winter schedule for Winter Break Mini-Camp (grades K–5), holiday workshops, art play classes for toddlers and preschoolers and after-school painting and drawing classes. 1781 W. Best Playgrounds Three playgrounds for you to visit this winter!
DID YOU KNOW: There are over 500 playgrounds in Central Florida?
In the spirit of PLAYGROUND’s Family Favorite Awards (and as an ode to our name!), these are the best spots in Orange County and Seminole County. With lots of parking, clean bathrooms, just enough shade and a balance of activities for a range of ages and interests, these hidden gems listed below are the complete package. Words and photos by Jasmin Barone
Lake Lorna Doone Park
1519 W. Church St., Orlando Across the street from Camping World Stadium is the best-kept secretin The City Beautiful. Having just opened months ago, it’s Orlando’s first inclusive playground for families with differing abilities. It’s built with accessibility in mind thanks to several wide playset ramps, inclusive seat swings and lots of room to navigate around structures. Plus, the smaller equipment section is sturdier than usual for the littles who need extra support in ascending the slides. The larger section of the play structure is a climber’s dream with lots of options for spinning and music as well. This park also includes a walking loop, a fitness station, pavilion, basketball courts with covered seating, a spray water park and even a one-of-a-kind mini-golf replica of the back nine at Bay Hill.
Tucker Ranch
70 Tucker Rd., Winter Garden An oak tree-lined haven provides the perfect amount of sunshade for this wooden Kompan Designs® playset. This picturesque park fosters imagination and provides ample opportunity for kids to explore. Toddlers can meander into the tiny house modeled as a perfect cabin, while more skilled climbers can go all the way up to a tall tree fort overlooking a rope bridge. Once there, suspended in the air, they can descend back down to another cute wooden house, making this playground an ideal place for little adventurers.
Torcaso Cove Park
104 N. Moss Rd., Winter Springs Set sail to this ocean-themed playground where adventure awaits! This Winter Springs playground brings the beach to landlocked Orlando. Kids can scale an enormous blue whale, play aboard a boat or climb a lighthouse-shaped tower with a slide. The rubber floor makes running a breeze and has bouncy feel to protect against falls — great for kids who like to roll around. There’s also a nearby sand pit and a splash pad, encouraging more swashbuckling play.

Throw an Epic Kid’s Noon Year’s Eve Celebration Grab a noisemaker and party like it’s 2022! When you have young children, planning New Year’s Eve can be tricky. In theory, it sounds nice to usher in January 1 together, but the reality is you’ll likely have to deal with sleepy (not to mention cranky) kiddos if you try keeping them up until midnight. But there’s a way to have fun without the sleepiness: Celebrate at noon instead! Molly Shapiro Boe of The Preppy Hostess, recommends these creative ways to end 2021 in the most fun and festive way possible:
Create a Wish Wand This clever craft keeps children entertained while also giving them an opportunity to think about the year ahead. Fashion a wand out of construction paper and a popsicle stick. Then encourage guests to write their 2022 wishes on the wand with markers. Decorate with pom poms, gems, paint and other fun embellishments. The best part? This creative keepsake also lets kids see how many wishes come true in the New Year.
Dress Up Just because the sun is still out doesn’t mean you can’t rock statement-making styles. From feather boas and NYE crowns to sparkly top hats and bowties, a celebratory dress code is a must. Make a photo station with props to capture the moment.
Sweeten Your Tablescape Serve a donut cake! Stack donuts on a cake stand and adorn with star-themed party picks. This tasty treat also doubles as a magical centerpiece.
Don’t Skimp on Sparkle If there’s ever a time to go all out on glittery décor, it’s now. Think metallic plates, napkins and confetti! Another adorable (and Insta-worthy) accent is serving punch or sparkling cider in plastic straw glasses shaped like disco balls.
Have a Countdown! Ring in the New Year with a traditional countdown. Give a heads up when it’s almost noon so guests can grab a noisemaker and gather together. Once the clock strikes 12, have a dance party. After all, there’s nothing better than celebrating with great tunes and friends!
