Welcome to PLAYGROUND! After completing a decade of publications and now starting our 11th year in print, it might be a good time to reintroduce ourselves to you. If you’re picking up PLAYGROUND for the first time, we're so glad you found us! PLAYGROUND is a regional parenting magazine that I created back in 2007. We're now bimonthly, meaning there's a new print issue published every other month. We distribute the magazine for free at family-friendly places around the Greater Orlando area. You can also purchase a subscription for $15 if you would like the magazine mailed to your home. Between issues, we keep in touch with our readers through online articles, social media posts and our Weekend PLAYguide e-newsletters. PLAYGROUND is created by local parents for local parents. The design of the magazine is geared toward adults who want to see beautiful imagery and clean lines. We curate our content so that it's relevant to Central Florida parents. Our goal is to connect the parenting community with all of the wonderful resources in Central Florida for kids and families — doing it all with humor and style. Since it's the beginning of another new year, we've compiled health-related articles to inspire you to keep those New Year's resolutions and offer local resources to keep your family active and healthy. We've also included a Pediatric Guide and a Private School Guide featuring local resources. Our Move! fashion story on page 28 features a new trampoline arena, DEFY Orlando, and local models wearing clothes that you can purchase around town. We hope you find this issue resourceful and entertaining! If you have any article ideas or feedback, please email me your thoughts. If you haven't already done so, follow us on Facebook or Instagram for videos, photo galleries and giveaways. PLAYfully Yours,

ABOUT THE COVER ... Our fashion stylist, Alisha Champ, came up the idea to shoot our Health Issue's fashion article at DEFY Orlando. It's a new, bright and super fun way for families to stay active. We reached out to one of our favorite Orlando photographers, Nicole Mitchem, to come up with the Move! article on page 28. We think Emma Rose, Madeleine, Camden, Kennedy and Jaxon all did an awesome job showing how great street-wear looks on active kids!

The Geneva School Announces $6 Million Campus Expansion
FYI:
The Geneva School, a K4-12 Christian classical school in Winter Park, will break ground this fall on the school’s 40-acre campus in Casselberry. The project is said to be ready to welcome students for the start of the 2019-2020 school year next August. The new 59,000 square foot building will house students in grades 7-12. Students in grades K4-6 will remain at the school’s current campus in Winter Park. Plans are in place to eventually expand the new campus to accommodate the entire Geneva community on one campus home. “Our teachers are thrilled about the new resources and space. In fact, they have already been dreaming about new ways to enhance academic programming,” said board chairperson John Riley. The design of the middle and high school facility supports Geneva's mission of teaching students how to think well and communicate persuasively. A capstone design element includes the Da Vinci Lab, which can be used for group discussion, creative collaboration, student thesis presentations and various clubs. In addition, the design includes a full-sized competition gymnasium with locker and weight rooms, multiple state-of-the art science labs and a black box theater. Another interesting feature will be a collaborative industrial space that can be used for drama set design, science experiments, large art projects and digital photography shoots. Other adjacent spaces include an art lab with a kiln and a sound-treated music room. The athletic facility, which already opened in November 2016, includes soccer, track, softball field, baseball field, tennis courts, beach volleyball courts and a practice field. Since the founding of The Geneva School in 1993, the faculty and staff have relentlessly pursued this one mission: "Inspiring students to love beauty, think deeply and pursue Christ's calling." For more information contact Katie Deatherage, director of advancement, at kideatherage@genevaschool.org.

I’m so impressed and appreciative for the article Ms. Amy Nielsen wrote entitled, Diagnosing Developmental Disabilities: Early Intervention Is Key. What an amazing resource this article is to parents. I will be passing it on to others and sharing it with students in my early childhood classes. Thank you!” –Marisa Macy, Ph.D., University of Central Florida 10 PLAYGROUND Feb / Mar 2019

Nice Cream Bowls With all the creamy goodness of real ice cream, this fruity imposter offers a sweet treat packed with nutrients. Words and photos by Kate De Luca
From vitamins and minerals to polyphenols and antioxidants, your body needs the fructose found in fruit to stay energetic and healthy. Fruit is simply one of the most perfect foods because it's packed with fiber, which helps you feel full for longer stretches of time. So, what better way to incorporate more fruit into your family’s daily intake than to create a delicious and beautiful bowl of nice cream?
"Nice cream" is simply a healthy, minimal-ingredient spin on ice cream. All you have to do is blend frozen bananas with other fruits or ingredients you choose to add to the mix. Banana is a natural emulsifier, so when blended while frozen, it takes on the texture and consistency of ice cream without all the junk. Instead, nice cream offers all the health benefits of fruit disguised as a delicious dessert.
Start with these Nice Cream Bowl recipes:
Strawberry Nice Cream Bowl
Blueberry Nice Cream Bowl
Chocolate Chip Cherry Nice Cream Bowl
Ingredients: • 2 frozen bananas • 1 bag of Trader Joe’s organic frozen strawberries • Trader Joe’s unsweetened shredded coconut • Trader Joe’s chocolatecovered sunflower seeds • 1 Trader Joe’s macaroon
Ingredients: • 2 frozen bananas • 1/2 bag of Trader Joe's frozen wild blueberries • Fresh blackberries (found in Trader Joe's refrigerated produce section) • 1 kiwi, peeled and cut into chunks or whatever shape you like! • Pineapple chunks (pre-cleaned rings can be found in Trader Joe's refrigerated produce section)
Ingredients: • 2 frozen bananas • 1 bag of Trader Joe's frozen cherries • Trader Joe's chocolate chunks (found in the baking section)
Instructions: Add bananas and strawberries to blender or processor with a touch of water or almond, rice, coconut or soy milk. Blend until smooth. Scoop the desired amount into a bowl and sprinkle with coconut flakes and chocolatecovered sunflower seeds. Add a macaroon for flair.
Instructions: Add bananas and blueberries to blender or processor with a touch of water or almond, rice, coconut or soy milk. Blend until smooth. Scoop the desired amount into a bowl and have fun placing fresh blackberries, kiwis and pineapple chunks on top.
Instructions: Add bananas, cherries and a handful of chocolate chunks to blender or processor with a touch of water or almond, rice, coconut or soy milk. Blend until smooth. Scoop the desired amount into a bowl and place a handful of chocolate chunks on top. You can even sprinkle unsweetened coconut shreds on top if you fancy!

Become a Safer, Smarter Family with These 5 Tips The Lauren’s Kids Safer, Smarter Families program arms parents with the tools and resources needed to prevent child sexual abuse. Words by Florida Senator Lauren Book, M.S. Ed.
LIVE
When talking about our children’s health, we often think in terms of illness and accident prevention, such as fighting off the common cold or taking steps to prevent injuries in or around the pool. Equally important to your child’s health, however, is their personal safety. After all, a safe family is a healthy family, and abuse prevention must be part of health-related conversations in your home. We don’t talk about childhood sexual abuse, but the number of children suffering – often in silence – is shocking: one in three girls and one in five boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday, and one in five children will be sexually solicited through the Internet before they graduate high school. Sadly, individuals with developmental delays or disabilities have a highly increased vulnerability to sexual assault. As one of the 42 million survivors of child sexual abuse in America, I know all too well how easily a predator can build trust and then violate boundaries. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to ensure all families are equipped with the resources needed to prevent abuse. The statistics may be scary, but you can teach your kids about personal safety from a place of fun, not fear. The first step toward preventing your child from being victimized is to arm yourself with information. Here are five important things to know about sexual abuse:
1. Abuse is preventable. The most important thing to know about child sexual abuse is this: 95 percent of cases are preventable through awareness and education. Continue to remind your child that they always have the right to feel safe and help them identify three trusted adults they can tell if they ever feel unsafe, confused or not quite right.
2. “Stranger danger” is a myth. The truth is that in more than 90 percent of abuse cases, a child is suffering at the hands of someone they and their families know and trust. Remember, a stranger is just someone your child doesn’t know well, and you can’t tell if someone is safe or unsafe based on how they look or even how well you know them. Instead, empower your child to decide if a person is safe or unsafe by the way the person makes the child feel.
3. Sexual abuse can happen to anyone. Child sexual abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions, at all levels of education and in every ZIP code. We may think it will never happen to our child, but all children are at risk. Predators are skilled at gaining the trust of both their victim and their victim’s family, which brings me to my next tip…
4. Predators are master manipulators. Predators are skilled and know exactly how to form close relationships with children and their families. They manipulate their target by a process called “grooming,” where they befriend and gain the trust of a child over time before beginning the cycle of abuse. Be cautious of any overly generous gifts or special attention your child receives from an adult. If an adult seems more interested in pursuing a relationship with your child than with you, that is a red flag. Other signs of abuse include nightmares, emotional withdrawal, acting out in school and inadequate personal hygiene.
5. It’s never too early to teach kids about body boundaries. Whether your child is five or 15, it’s never too early — or too late — to start a dialogue about personal safety. Teach your child the proper anatomical names of their body parts and reinforce that their private parts (areas covered by a bathing suit as well as their mouth) belong to them and are part of their personal bubble. Also, when talking about touch, use the terms “safe vs. unsafe” rather than “good vs. bad.” Some touches may physiologically feel good but emotionally make the child feel icky or confused. Parents are the first line of defense to protect children from unsafe situations, so it’s critical to arm yourself with information. My foundation, Lauren’s Kids, created a free program called Safer, Smarter Families, which offers an interactive online tool to help you create a personalized Family Safety Plan, which can be customized based on your child’s age as well as any developmental delays or disabilities they may have. After answering a few short questions, you’ll be able to access your custom plan complete with engaging videos, fun printable activities and other helpful tips on topics such as body boundaries, cyber safety, healthy relationships and self-esteem. For more ideas about how to protect your family from abuse and to generate an interactive, custom Family Safety Plan, visit SaferSmarterFamilies.org.
Senator Lauren Book, M.S. Ed, is an internationally respected and renowned child advocate, former classroom teacher and best-selling author. She represents the Broward County-based District 32 in the Florida Senate and serves as the Democratic Leader Pro Tempore. Book is also one of 42 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse living in the U.S. today, and founded Lauren’s Kids, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation, in 2007.

LEARNING MINDS MONTESSORI
We are a private independent preschool located in the core of sunny, downtown Orlando, Florida. • Our staff is well-trained, friendly, enthusiastic and passionate. • Our student-teacher ratios are above the state’s standards. • Our school offers a fun interactive handson, project-based learning curriculum. • The children at our school receive a high-quality education in a nurturing atmosphere of love and respect and are encouraged to develop a life-long love of learning. When we moved from the UK we looked everywhere for a school that would have the same standards of learning as in Europe. We initially went to a well known community school and were completely appalled at the lack of care and attention. It was clear the children were dollar signs rather than individuals to be nurtured. We were so thrilled to find Sumera and the Learning Minds family. They are truly exceptional and frankly give a higher quality of engagement than we could even recreate at home! – Rosie Leach

first-timer at Bethanne Weiss’ Funiq Fitness studio in her beautiful Longwood home would be in for a real treat. Bethanne would likely be dressed in one of her original Funiq Fitness tanks with her dark, curly hair twisted up in a high bun, and she’d certainly be blasting music. With her heavy New York accent, she’d introduce you to the rest of her students, most of whom have been loyal followers for years. You’d then jump right into an hour of Funiq Fitness, a class filled with everything from kickboxing to yoga and always guaranteed to be full of surprises. One thing that’s not a surprise at Funiq Fitness is that you’ll move what Bethanne jokingly calls your “assets.” Bethanne defines assets as “that lovely, dozing thing you’ve been sitting on for umpteen years, which I promise to wake up!” You’ll walk out of each Funiq Fitness class looking for ways to add more “moving your assets” into your everyday life. Bethanne’s humor, knowledge and the way she effortlessly blends the two leaves you thirsting for more. Bethanne has more than 30 years of experience motivating people of all ages and fitness levels, from helping new moms bounce back post-partum to helping older clients stay fit throughout their later years and everyone in between. Bethanne and her unique fitness coaching and instructing can do it all. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business/exercise science and is certified by the American Council on Exercise in group and personal fitness and nutrition. She was also
one of the first instructors to be certified by the International Dance Exercise Association (IDEA) and Step Reebok. Health and fitness haven’t always come easy for Bethanne. She has struggled with chronic pain and dizziness for much of her life, but she has refused to let that stop her. Bethanne is a motivating icon who demonstrates that despite injury and pain, you can still be healthy and fit. She walks the walk — literally. She’s out nearly every day blazing the Seminole Wekiva Trail. When she must drive somewhere, she looks for the farthest parking spot. She always chooses the stairs over the elevator. Bethanne looks for ways to add movement into her everyday life while encouraging her students to do the same. In addition to teaching fitness classes, she also offers personal training, works as a motivational speaker, runs a fitness blog, and has recently written and published a life-changing book titled Move Your Assets: From the Chair, Not the Bank! Visit Bethanne on the web at moveyourassets.com to learn more about her fitness classes and to read her blog. Her book can be purchased on Amazon. Beth hopes to see readers from PLAYGROUND Magazine at her studio soon, and she promises to help you “move your assets” in ways you’ve never imagined!

Mighty Girls: Building Confidence Through Fitness Mighty Girls Fitness gives Central Florida girls a place of their own to develop both strength and self-esteem. Words by Cortney Thekan | Photos by Jessica Friend Kaci Line, fitness coach and owner of Mighty Girls Fitness, has always been passionate about helping others reach their goals. As a child, she would set up fitness camps for the kids in her neighborhood to help them earn the Presidential Physical Fitness Award at school. “It was big deal to get that patch,” Kaci says. Even as a kid, she says, she recognized that feeling strong made her feel confident. Though fitness has been a lifelong passion, Kaci recalls the moment when she realized that it was time to retire from her career in law to focus on coaching and fitness full-time. “I went to a fitness retreat in Mexico, and it was so empowering to see the women there. Nothing was about how we looked; it was all about how we felt. Feeling good about yourself can help you do anything in life. Fitness can truly help you change your life.” With a mission to inspire, motivate and empower women and girls (ages 8 and up), Mighty Girls Fitness is the grown-up version of Kaci’s neighborhood fitness camp. Her unique offering is entirely focused on developing self-esteem and confidence through self-care and fitness. As an American Council on Exercise (ACE)-certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor with a Youth Fitness Specialist Certificate, she conducts personal training sessions in Maitland and group fitness classes for women and girls at the Dance 360 studio in Baldwin Park. As a mom of two (Preston [13] and Addison [11]), Kaci is keenly aware of how important it is to introduce children to the benefits of movement at a young age. Part of her motivation to start Mighty Girls Fitness was her realization that there is a gap in opportunities to explore fitness for kids who are no longer exposed to physical education at school (for many kids, physical education ends in middle school). “If girls are not involved in sports or dance, there’s no place for them to go. Our classes offer a place to focus on movement — we’re not a gym or a studio — we concentrate on movement. When we move, we feel happy. And what do we want to be in life? We want to be happy.” Recognizing that growing up is tough, and preteens and teens can be particularly vulnerable to questioning their self-worth, Kaci regularly reminds her students, “Exercise is never about how we look; it’s always about how we feel.” She explains that the heart of Mighty Girls Fitness is to help girls develop a healthy relationship with nutrition and exercise so they feel good about themselves. She says, “I want them to feel like they can do anything.” Kaci Line

Choosing the Best Pet for Your Family According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, raising children with pets can benefit a child's selfesteem and self-confidence and can encourage compassion and empathy. But, unlike a sweater that you return if it doesn't fit quite right, choosing a pet shouldn't be an impulse buy. Words by Christa Melnyk Hines | Photo by Melissa Valiante

B
efore surprising your children with a new pet, consider your family's lifestyle, finances and personality to decide which pet is right for you. According to Barbara Poe, a humane society manager, 75 percent of the animals returned to the shelter result from families adding a pet to their households without considering the challenges. "This percentage rises when talking about the return of puppies. Puppies require a lot of time, socialization and training," Poe says. A Moment of Your Time? First, take a look at a typical day for your family to determine if you're home enough to provide the care and attention a pet deserves. "Kittens and puppies are like having an extra toddler in your house. They require a lot of supervision because they will chew on things, climb on things or get into things you don't necessarily want them to or that might be harmful to them," says Dawn Morgan, manager of volunteer and client services at an animal rescue organization. While older dogs and cats may adjust better to a busy lifestyle, they still need exercise, playtime, training and grooming. Without enough exercise and social interaction, a bored, lonely dog may take out its frustrations engaged in destructive behaviors like chewing and digging. Less demanding pets like fish might work better for families with hectic schedules. As with any pet, determine in advance how much you want your child to help, whether it's with feeding or cleaning. Be prepared to enforce the rules and pick up any slack. A Financial Commitment Besides food, vaccinations, spaying or neutering and supplies, the scale slides wildly when considering the overall financial cost of a pet. Life expectancies vary, and if your pet develops health problems, you'll likely pay more for its care over the long haul than for an otherwise healthy animal. Also, if you choose a more exotic pet like a guinea pig, bird or a reptile, prepare to pay a little extra for a veterinarian who specializes in handling exotic animals. It's a Match! To ensure both the safety of your child and the welfare of the animal, understand the temperament of various types of
animals. "It's really important when you think to bring a pet into your home that you look for a dog or cat that matches your personality and will fit into the dynamic of your family instead of just the one that is the cutest," Morgan says. If you're adopting from a shelter, talk to the volunteer who walks and feeds the animals. This person usually spends the most time with individual cats and dogs and can talk to you about their personalities and which ones would do well in a home with children. Among dogs, research breeds and mixes. While retrievers and labradors tend to be good family dogs, some families don't realize how much exercise and attention these breeds require. Take into account your child's personality as well. "Shy or timid kids are confusing to a dog. Dogs react differently to a shy, fearful behavior and may see it as a threatening behavior," says veterinarian Dr. Andrea Ferrell. If you choose a puppy, enroll in a puppy training class to ensure that it learns to properly interact with people and to socialize with other dogs. Pocket Pets With parental supervision, animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and other small mammals make good first-time pets for children who are ready for the responsibility of caring for an animal. Purchase a young rabbit or guinea pig so that it grows accustomed to handling. While they don't require much in the way of exercise, rabbits and guinea pigs do enjoy social interaction and clean, indoor enclosures. Birds and Reptiles Carefully research other small animals like birds, reptiles and amphibians before adding them to your family. Many of these animals are neither easy to care for nor to handle. Turtles, in particular, carry Salmonella bacteria on their shells, which can sicken a child still learning hand-washing hygiene. When researching the right pet for you, talk to friends and family who own pets that you are interested in, your veterinarian or your local animal shelter. For more tips and information, visit veterinarypartners.com.
