Let’s Talk About Wellness…

@PLAYorlando Heather Reneau Publisher & Creative Director heather@playgroundmagazine.com Brant Muekeley Financial Manager brant@playgroundmagazine.com Jessica Ventura Advertising Manager jessica@playgroundmagazine.com

It’s a buzzword we can’t seem to escape. Unless you’ve been totally unplugged for the past few years, you’ve probably seen what seems like a zillion articles about self-care and endless products that claim they’re good for your “well-being.” In reality, sometimes a candle is just a candle — one jar of scented wax won’t change your life. All that being said, there’s nothing wrong with striving to find balance and make better choices, which is why this edition of PLAYGROUND is dubbed our health issue. Beyond our Family Medical Guide on page 36 that highlights the best medical professionals and practices in the area, the rest of our stories span a variety of topics, so you’re sure to find one that’ll speak to you and your family’s lifestyle. Want to get some fresh air? Check out Amanda Green’s article (page 22) that covers scenic trails to try with your kids. Or read Chris Karel’s piece on swimming with the manatees (page 30). Want to cut back on your UberEats addiction? Kirsten Harrington shows you how to DIY healthy — not to mention delicious — dinner bowls on page 18. Or maybe you simply want your kiddos to brush their teeth for more than 10 seconds before bed? We have little wins like that covered on page 16. Remember, as parents, we’re all doing the best we can, so this issue is here to help and inspire — not to make you feel bad or pressure you to do more “healthy” things with the fam. And hey, if all you have time to do is burn a candle that touts feel-good vibes, go ahead and light that baby up! PLAYfully,

As an adult, you understand the importance of oral health. Not only does good dental hygiene prevent tooth decay and infections, but it’s also linked to the body’s overall well-being. This is why it’s so important to instill proper habits in your children from an early age. Getting your little ones to take care of their pearly whites can be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be. Words by Javier Girardot, DMD at Orlando Pediatric Dentistry

Dentist-approved Tips

Make Brushing Fun

Working at Orlando Pediatric Dentistry in Baldwin Park, I get questions all the time from parents about what they should be doing at home. Let’s start with the basics:

While 10 years of overseeing oral care may seem like a long time, it doesn’t have to be the most daunting task in your morning and bedtime routines. Try these ideas to infuse a little fun into brushing:

Babies Did you know that oral care starts when you bring babies home from the hospital? It’s as simple as wiping infants’ gums with a soft washcloth following feedings to remove bacteria and keep the mouth healthy. Once a tooth erupts, brush twice a day with a thin smear of fluoride toothpaste on the tip of a soft-bristled toothbrush, wiping away any excess left on teeth. It is recommended for your child to see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday. Toddlers By the time toddlers reach 3 years old, parents should be helping them brush with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for 2 minutes twice a day. Introduce flossing once two teeth start to touch each other. Kids Once kids are 6 years old, it’s time to introduce a fluoride mouthwash before bed. Continue flossing and brushing for 2 minutes twice a day. Experts recommend parents continue to monitor brushing until kids reach 10 years old.

Play a Song YouTube has plenty to choose from, such as “Brush Your Teeth” by Super Simple Songs. You can also get creative and come up with your own. Download an App Oral-B’s Disney Magic Timer (free in the App Store) makes brushing for the whole 2 minutes an interactive experience with a little help from your kiddo’s favorite characters, including Darth Vader, Elsa, Mickey Mouse and more. Learn About the Importance of Brushing Together Read books like Where the Sugar Bugs Live or Brush, Brush, Brush! or watch videos together to encourage good habits. Create a Smile Chart Track brushing and flossing with stickers. Make It a Family Affair Brushing together feels more like a party than a chore. Go Shopping Together By letting your kids choose their brush, toothpaste flavor and other accessories, they’ll be more inclined to use them.

Meet Dr. Javier Girardot! Orlando Pediatric Dentistry has been making patients smile since 2006. Dr. Girardot and his team strive to introduce dentistry to children in a fun and friendly way. The practice serves infants, children, teens and those with special needs, teaching them the importance of dental hygiene. As a father himself, Dr. Girardot understands the need for parental involvement in their children's healthcare, so moms and dads are always welcome to tag along to appointments. 16 PLAYGROUND Feb / Mar 2022

3 Healthy (and Kid-Approved) Dinner Bowls

Photo: iStock.com | evgenyatamanenko

If you’re struggling to get dinner on the table, help is on the way! Instead of spending time on a complicated recipe, invite your family to help create a dinner bowl they’re going to love.

Words by Kirsten Harrington

The idea is super simple: Start with a base (like rice, grains or greens), add some protein and then get creative with toppings. All you have to do is choose a theme, like Mexican or Italian, and then set out the ingredients for your family to add the flavors they like best. Bowls are a fun supper option to introduce new foods, use up leftovers, create family interaction in the kitchen and placate even the pickiest eater. Because everyone makes their own (with some help for the littlest kids), it’s an easy way to please tiny tots, hungry teens, vegetarians and gluten-free diners without feeling like a short-order cook. Plus, preparing the ingredients in advance equals less stress when dinnertime rolls around.

Here are a few ideas to get you started, but mix and match to create your own signature dish.

Asian

If you’re craving Chinese food, hold off on ordering takeout. Instead, whip up bowl at home that will satisfy your craving and save your budget. Add a vegetable dumpling or two for heartier appetites, or swap the dumplings in place of the chicken for a vegetarian meal. Give everyone a pair of chopsticks to try a new way to eat their veggies.

Mexican

Why not try something new for Taco Tuesday? Mexican-inspired bowls are a fun twist on an old favorite, and it’s an easy way to sneak in a few extra veggies. For more hands-on fun, set out cubed avocado, cilantro, chili powder and lime wedges, and let everyone make their own tableside guacamole.

BASE: Jasmine or brown rice

BASE: Yellow rice, quinoa, baby greens or a mixture

PROTEIN: Grilled chicken in Teriyaki sauce

PROTEIN: Lean grilled steak or turkey taco meat

VEGGIES: Edamame, snow peas, steamed broccoli, shredded carrots, cucumbers

VEGGIES: Corn, diced tomatoes, colored peppers, red onions, purple cabbage

EXTRA TOPPINGS: Sesame seeds, green onions, peanuts, crunchy noodles, soy sauce, sesame dressing

EXTRA TOPPINGS: Tortilla chips, salsa, sour cream, cheese, cilantro, ranch dressing

Italian

Set out noodles, tempting toppings and marina or alfredo sauce so each diner can create their own Italian masterpiece. Invite helpers into the kitchen to make warm breadsticks from refrigerated dough and reward everyone with a scoop of fruit sorbet for dessert. BASE: Whole wheat penne, rotini or your favorite pasta shape PROTEIN: Italian chicken sausage or seasoned shrimp VEGGIES: Steamed broccoli, sautéed kale or zucchini “noodles” (use a veggie peeler to make slices and quickly sauté in olive oil). EXTRA TOPPINGS: Baby mozzarella balls, fresh basil, shredded parmesan, olive oil, pesto, marinated olives, artichoke hearts, cannellini beans or garbanzo beans

Fridge fillers! Have dinner ready in a snap with these go-to items: • Microwaveable quinoa, lentils, mixed grains or rice pouches • Rotisserie chicken • Canned beans • Frozen vegetarian crumbles or patties

• Italian-style, Caribbean-style or stir-fry frozen vegetables in steam-able packages • Pre-washed leafy greens, shredded carrots and ready-to-cook veggies

• Salsa • Hummus • Sauces • Sesame and olive oil • Salad dressings

The Top FamilyFriendly Trails in Central Florida

Adventure awaits at these 7 spots around town. Words & Photos by Amanda Green All parents can relate to the sentiment, “kids change everything.” It’s true, but that doesn’t mean you have to neglect your passions once the kids come along. For example, my husband and I have traversed hundreds of miles of sandy Florida trails over the years, and we didn’t want those adventures to stop when we became parents. So instead, we set out to find the best trailheads for our little adventurers. Below, find seven Central Florida trails laced with mossy oaks, exciting wildlife, easyto-navigate terrain and diverse ecosystems the whole family can explore together.

Bear Creek Nature Trail

Length: 0.9 mile loop Best for: Tiny tots, ages 2+ Bathrooms: None available on-site Address: 1535 Winter Springs Blvd., Winter Springs Description: The best way for families to introduce toddlers to the trails is by exploring the woods close to home. Bear Creek Nature Trail is a short loop that’s ideal for beginners. This trail offers a creek crossing, trees to climb on and an easy-to-follow route. It’s perfect for the youngest hikers who can’t go long distances and parents who like the feel of being just far enough out of suburbia to scratch that wilderness itch. PLAY Tip: As a beginner trail, it’s a good idea to get your children familiar with being in the woods by talking about your senses as you hike. Ask: What do we hear? What do we see? What do we smell? How do the tree, leaves, and pine cones feel when we touch them?

Highlands Hammock State Park

Length: Varies, starting at 0.5 miles Best for: All ages Bathrooms: Multiple restrooms available throughout the park Address: 5931 Hammock Rd., Sebring Description: While a bit of a drive from metro Orlando, Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring is worth the trip. This well-maintained park has nine beautiful trails to explore. A good jumping-off point is the Cypress Swamp Trail, which is a historic boardwalk originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Once you’ve finished that section, create your own loop out of the other eight trails. Don’t miss the Alexander Blair Big Oak Trail. The giant oak for which it’s named fell years ago, but you can still step up to the magnificent stump (oddly fascinating!). The trails in this park are a delight for all the senses. PLAY Tip: Once you’re done playing in the woods, head over to Civilian Conservation Corps Museum that’s filled with exhibits, including a Fireside Chat with President Roosevelt.

Little Big Econ – Barr Street Trailhead

Length: 5.2 mile loop (or 2.6 mile one way) Best for: Ages 5+ Bathrooms: Not available on-site Address: 951 Barr St., Oviedo Description: This popular trail winds through several Central Florida ecosystems, including a stretch along the beautiful Econlockhatchee River. Keep an eye out for gators sunning themselves on the riverbank, turtles, armadillos, deer, wild hogs and even otters. The trail is mostly shaded with well-packed soil, but there are roots and muddy spots, so watch your step. Kids will love swinging from Tarzan-like vines and playing in the waterfall. PLAY Tip: To cut the hike in half, take two cars. Park one at the Barr Street Trailhead parking lot and then drive together to the entrance off Lockwood Blvd. near Evans Rd. intersection. 23 PLAYGROUND Feb / Mar 2022

Family Day Hike Checklist: Snacks (trail mix, jerky, fruit, crackers) Lots of water First aid kit (bandages, Neosporin, alcohol wipes, blister treatment and antihistamine) Toilet paper and a towel Bug spray and sunscreen Whistles (in case of emergency) Tell someone where you're parking, where you're hiking and how long you'll be gone.

Circle B Bar Reserve

Enchanted Forest Sanctuary Trail

Length: 2.5 mile loop Best for: Ages 3+ Bathrooms: Available at the Nature Center Address: 444 Columbia Blvd., Titusville Description: Start your adventure at the Enchanted Forest Nature Center, where you sign in, pick up a trail map and learn about the surrounding habitats. The trails meander through various landscapes, from sandy oak scrub to shady towering canopies, hydric hammocks and floodplains. There are interpretive signs that explain each environment and its various plants and animals so that you can broaden your knowledge along the way. PLAY Tip: Tortoise Trail and Magnolia Loop are mostly in the shade, making them ideal for family outings.

Circle B Bar Reserve

Length: Varies, starting at 0.9 miles Best for: All ages, depending on the trail Bathrooms: Available inside the Discovery Center Address: 4399 Winter Lake Rd., Lakeland Description: A straight shot down I-4 between Orlando and Tampa, the Circle B Bar Reserve is a former cattle ranch that is now a wildlife lover’s paradise — and a reason to visit Lakeland. Start your day by setting aside at least a half-hour to explore the Polk's Nature Discovery Center, which includes an impressive exhibit outlining the various ecosystems you’ll see on the trail. After that, choose which loop to hike based on your skill and comfort level. A good place to start is the 1.3-mile Shady Oak Trail that begins paved and widens into a wide path under an impressive canopy of Spanish moss-soaked live oaks. Once the trail reaches the lake, turn back toward the Discovery Center to avoid the infamous Alligator Alley. PLAY Tip: In addition to walking paths, there’s also an old cow camp across the street from one of the parking lots where kids can explore a hitching post and learn about Florida cowboys.

The Yearling Trail

Length: 5.5 mile loop Best for: Ages 12+ Bathrooms: None available on-site. Address: Ocala National Forest, FL-19, Fort McCoy The loop is the perfect trail for families with older kids who are interested in history and literature. The Yearling Trail is named for the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Yearling, written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. You’ll see sinkholes, cattle dips, an old homestead, a cemetery and more. While it’s a wonderful trail following in the footsteps of early Florida settlers, the Ocala National Forest is rugged and remote. PLAY Tip: Hikers are recommended to bring along bear canisters as a precaution.

Blackbear Wilderness Loop Trail

Length: 7.1 mile loop Best for: Ages 8+, experienced hikers Bathrooms: None available on-site Address: 5298 Michigan Ave., Sanford This 7-mile hikers’ paradise is built on levees above the swampy land around the St. Johns River. The trail can be a bit strenuous for little legs but is perfect for tweens and teens who want a local adventure. Bring your binoculars and keep an eye out for various species of birds, wild hogs, deer, armadillos and the elusive Florida black bear for which this trail is named. PLAY Tip: To avoid any spills, bring along a hiking stick or two for balance. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even stay overnight on the trail’s primitive campsite. Why I’m Not Stressing About Organic Fruit Snacks How I learned to chill about the “organic everything” frenzy and make balanced food choices for my kids — and my sanity. Essay by Rebecca Hastings

I tend to be a middle-of-the-road parent. When it comes to feeding my kids, I coast between what I know they “should” eat and what tastes great, sounds fun and is realistic. An important note here: I know what the “right way” is. I get it. Organic, free-range, real food, fair trade, wholesome — the list goes on. If that works for you, then I say, “Go for it!” I’ll cheer you on while eating a Snickers. I’ve always been a bit of a rule breaker. My kids tried eggs earlier than the baby-feeding timeline said they should. We discovered that there was, in fact, no peanut allergy when my mom gave my daughter a spoonful of peanut butter when she was 1 year old. Of course, we weren’t reckless; we never gave our babies honey (although I’m still not 100% sure why…). But we broke some of the rules, and that was okay for our family. Honestly, the rules often seem inconsistent to me. Like why does putting a celebration on the calendar suddenly make endless buckets or stockings of candy acceptable? Maybe if it’s fair-trade chocolate, it’s okay? I don’t think my scale cares what kind of chocolate I eat, and my kids get just as hyped up, so who really knows? When it comes to shopping for groceries, I do feel the pull toward the organic milk and fruit, but the truth is my wallet often wins out, and I go with what’s cheaper. I once read that we should try to avoid the “dirty dozen” (the Environmental Working Group’s list of produce most likely to be exposed to pesticides), but have you read the list? Apples! Grapes! Strawberries! In my house, that basically means we’re supposed to buy organic everything. Still, I don’t.

Organic is awesome, if that’s what you want to do. However, I find myself thinking that it’s just not essential to me. It doesn’t make my top 5 or 10 or even 20 things to stress over as a parent. So, I let it go. Somehow, I figure non-organic fruit is better than organic fruit chews in the shape of animals, and non-organic milk is better than endless cups of organic juice. I’ll let you in on another thing: A few weeks ago, we stopped for frozen yogurt. Not after dinner, but instead of dinner. I think I cut up something later when people got hungry again, but frozen yogurt was the meal. And you know what? My kids thought I was a superhero while I was a lot happier with some peanut butter chocolate swirl and hot fudge. I know we can’t eat that way all the time, but sometimes froyo for dinner is just what a hectic day calls for. I’ve found that cruising in the middle has made me a lot happier. It’s taken my type A tendencies and relaxed them enough that I can smile more and worry less. No one said this parenting ride wouldn’t be without some bumps in the road, so I navigate as best I can — right after I swing through the drive-up for a latte. I’ve realized that sometimes you have to take in the information and do what works best for your own family. Maybe next month, I’ll realize we should be drinking kombucha every day. Maybe next month, I’ll buy some organic products. But whatever next month holds, I’ll do what I believe is best for my family and enjoy the ride — no matter what’s in our shopping cart.

Plantation on Crystal River gives you a swimwith-the-manatees getaway for the books Even in a state overflowing with fun things to do and breathtaking places to see, Crystal River stands out for its unique combination of natural beauty, small-town charm and plethora of outdoor activities. Families journey here from all over the southeast to dive for scallops, hike and bike the area’s hundreds of miles of trails and enjoy the shops, art galleries and restaurants along the city’s quaint main street. It is truly a wonderland for families who love nature adventures. However, Crystal River’s main claim to fame is the manatees who inhabit the city’s springs and waterways. While there are other places around Florida where you can see manatees, Crystal River is the only place in North America where you can actually swim with them. Not only is being on the water beneficial for the mind and body, but a close encounter with these huge, aquatic teddy bears nourishes the soul. Splashing around with the manatees isn’t cheap, however, with tours starting at $275 for a family of four. And while Crystal River has many great things in abundance, hotel rooms are not one of them. All but one of the city’s handful of hotels are basic 2.5-star establishments, and the influx of visitors during the winter months — when the population of manatees in the area swells — can push room rates over $175 a night. All of this makes the Swim with the Manatees package offered by Crystal River’s lone luxury resort, Plantation on Crystal River, that much more enticing. For $549, four guests get overnight accommodations in a garden-view room, a manatee snorkeling tour with all equipment provided, breakfast at the resort’s West 82° Bar

& Grill, and a welcome bag with a plush manatee toy, fun facts and manatee interaction guidelines. Another advantage of the Plantation on Crystal River’s package is that the manatee tour is provided by the resort’s own adventure center and dive shop. When you’re ready to depart on your tour, you just stroll down to the on-site facility — no need to drive anywhere. The manatee tour lasts around 3 hours, leaving you plenty of time to explore the other sites and activities the area has to offer. If your manatee tour leaves you hungry for more time on the water, Plantation on Crystal River’s adventure center also offers sightseeing cruises, guided scalloping and fishing charters and even boat rentals. Further afield, the resort is just a 2-minute drive from Three Sisters Springs and Hunter Springs Park, and just 5 minutes from Citrus Avenue and its art galleries, restaurants and shops. Or travel 12 minutes in the other direction to Fort Island Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Last but not least, Crystal River Archaeological State Park is a can’t-miss attraction. The U.S. National Historic Landmark is one of the longest continually occupied sites in Florida, a ceremonial complex that was a gathering place for Native Americans for over 1,600 years. Whether you opt to get wet or stay dry, to immerse yourself in the here and now or take a trip back in time, Crystal River has something for every member of the family. If you’re planning a visit to see and interact with the area’s star attraction, though, there’s no better way to do it than with the Plantation on Crystal River’s Swim with the Manatees package. After a weekend of family-friendly outdoor fun, your body, mind, soul — and hopefully even the kids — will thank you.

3 Inclusive Playgrounds Whether you’re looking for a place that’s calming to the senses or wheelchair-accessible, these three play spots are designed for all kids, no matter their needs or abilities.

SENSES Park

2296 Camelia Dr., Kissimmee SENSES Park is a fully wheelchair-accessible playground that brings a calming experience to children who are prone to overstimulation or those on the autism spectrum. The play structures are separated by space to allow for self-learning, exploration and a less intense social play experience. There are also musical instruments (like bongo drums, xylophones and a marimba), a low-level climber, a sand pit, a huge disc swing and a climbing wall. Parents and children alike will love that it’s a place where you can also get in touch with nature, whether it’s by listening to the soothing, natural sounds that echo throughout the park or rolling down its large, grassy hill.

Cannery Park

901 Virginia Ave., St. Cloud This beautiful park in St. Cloud is designed to bring together Central Florida kiddos of all ages and abilities. With two zip lines, low-slope ramps, lots of slides, four different types of swings, and wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round and gliders, this playground is as easy to navigate as it is diverse. Plus, its wideopen build allows many children to play at once without it ever feeling overcrowded.

Engelwood Park

6050 Lake Underhill Rd., Orlando Sometimes playgrounds can be overwhelming due to too much noise or hordes of kids running wild. This tranquil park is a haven for young ones who prefer a more serene setting. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, this park is filled with lovely trees that provide shade and insulate sound. The park also offers picnic tables, spread-out play structures, swings for babies and a disc swing for multiple children or children who don’t like tight spaces.
