COVER CONTEST WINNERS: LISA, ERIC & OLLIE of Orlando
2/15/08 12:09:20 PM
In honor of our 10-year anniversary, we're celebrating with the family from our original cover. In 2008, Lisa and Eric O'Rourke just had their beautiful baby boy, Oliver. He was only one month old when they attended our casting call in Baldwin Park for PLAYGROUND's first cover family. We were looking for local modern parents to don the cover of our new and sophisticated magazine. They needed to have style and edge — the O'Rourke's had both. After 10 years, the magazine has gone through some changes, and so have the O'Rourke's. Oliver is now 10 (just like us!), and they are a family of four, with the addition of their beautiful daughter Reese (7). Check them out in our fashion story on page 27. We also wanted to catch up with Lisa to see how life has been the last decade for this Orlando family. Q: With a decade of parenting under your belt, what's the one thing you would like to say to that young mother on the cover of the 2008 issue? A: Well, obvi, it would be "STOP WORRYING so much! Your new little family is going to turn out just fine, even better than fine! Stop fretting, silly girl!" Isn't that what we would ALL say? Q: Do you and Eric take on traditional or non-traditional roles when it comes to your parenting styles? A: Non-traditional 100 percent — anyone who knows us would agree Eric's the nurturing parent, and I'm the tough-love parent in a lot of ways. It works for us. We make a creative, effective team when it comes to raising our kids because we don't subscribe to gender roles and traditional parenting tactics. We laugh a lot — at ourselves, at each other, at our kids — we don't take ourselves too seriously, and I think that's the trick.

Q: How do you and Eric parent differently from your parents? A: Literally in every way! I come from a staunch, immigrant, Latin Cuban-American family, and Eric experienced quite a bit of divorce growing up, so our goals are simply to stay married and openminded. Neither of us had those two things growing up. We love our parents immensely and think they did an exceptional job raising us, but times are different now. This idea of "children should be seen and not heard" is outdated. Our children have just as much — if not more — to teach US as we have to teach THEM. As parents, we need to turn off autopilot and be more conscientious in our parenting. Engage! [Parenting] is not just a job; it's also a gift.

Q: What's your favorite part about raising your kids in The City Beautiful? A: We love sharing the unconditional acceptance we now feel in Orlando "post-Pulse." From that tragedy came this undeniable bond in our city. We don't go into great detail with our young ones yet about the tragedy itself. At a high level, they understand that our city came to the rescue in droves when our own were under attack for just being who they were. Children inherently understand unconditional love, and that idea is fostered here in Orlando 1000 percent by the people we encounter, the places we go, the things we do ... love is love! My second favorite thing to share with them is the abundant beauty at all the springs, namely Blue Springs (our fave!).

Q: What's your favorite part of PLAYGROUND Magazine? A: The camp guide saves me every summer — thank you! But my favorite resource is the activities listings ... being Florida natives makes us a super outdoorsy family!

COOKIE DOUGH THAT'S SAFE TO EAT We just heard about Wonderland Cookie Dough Co., a new heavenly dessert spot in Celebration that offers egg-free and 100% safe-to-eat raw cookie dough -- straight from the bowl (the best way to eat it, of course). Each batch is made fresh daily with no added preservatives using special heattreated flour, which eliminates illness from raw untreated flour. It’s currently the only scoop shop specifically dedicated to edible cookie dough (in its unbaked state) in the region. Grab a pint, a quart or a sampler flight or be adventurous and try the “cookie dough nachos” (two scoops of dough over crumbled waffle cone chips — amazing!). wonderlandcookiedough.com orlandocitysc.com/cubclub

Watermelon Flag Kebobs
You might never go back to traditional lemonade after tasting this delicious drink! Makes about 5 cups.
This healthy version introduces watermelon in place of the ice cream — a healthy, refreshing twist on a favorite treat!
Let your American flag fly with pride with these fruity kebobs. Easy fun the whole family can help create!
Ingredients: • 1/2 cup lemon juice • 2 1/2 cups water • 2/3 cups agave syrup
Ingredients: • 8 ice cream cones (your choice of flavor)
• 2 cups watermelon chunks
• 8 tablespoons pineapple cream cheese frosting
Instructions:
• 1/2 cup dried craisins
• Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Serve over ice.
• 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt • 8 ice cream scoops of seedless watermelon Instructions:
DID YOU KNOW? The National Watermelon Promotion Board is an Orlando-based nonprofit organization that operates with a single objective: to increase consumer demand for watermelon through promotion, research and educational programs.
• Pipe a tablespoon of the frosting into the bottom of each cone. Divide the craisins and sprinkle over the frosting. Top with the yogurt. Place an ice cream scoop of watermelon on top of each cone and serve. You may choose to add additional toppings: sprinkles, pineapple chunks, chocolate chips or coconut flakes!
10 PLAYGROUND Jul / Aug 2018
Ingredients: • One seedless watermelon, cut into 1" cubes • 1 package fresh, washed blackberries • 1 angel food cake, cut into 1" cubes (white part only) • 12 wooden skewers • Various dips (melted chocolate, peanut butter, cream cheese frosting) Instructions: • Thread 5 blackberries on 5 skewers, followed by alternating cake and watermelon cubes. On the other skewers, alternate watermelon and cake, so that the first and last cubes are both watermelon. The fruit and cake will create stripes when lined properly. Spar Wars Get Fighting Siblings to Make Peace Words by Malia Jacobson
Angelic images of smiling siblings make crowd-pleasing Facebook fodder, but the reality of life with two or more children is decidedly less picture-perfect. According to research from the University of Toronto, toddler-age siblings clash more than six times per hour; siblings under age 7 fight every 20 minutes on average. Fights that get physical can leave lasting physical and emotional scars. If sibling fighting is stealing the peace in your household, read on for relief.

Research shows that conflict between young siblings is statistically normal. But regular bouts of biting, hitting and kicking aren’t — parents should intervene when clashes between toddler-age siblings become violent, per the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Though kids as young as age 3 may be able to talk though minor disagreements during play (“I had it first!"), they’ll nearly always require guidance from a caregiver to navigate more heated exchanges and physical fights. Start by separating the scuffling sibs with a statement like, “We never hit.” Once children have calmed down, ask them to explain what happened, reassuring each child that they’ll get their turn to speak. Statements that bridge the conflict to build connection can diffuse fights and guide kids toward resolution: “Jackson, I know Olivia is a good listener, so you can tell her why you didn’t like it when she pushed you.” Encouraging tots to use words to selfadvocate (“I didn’t like it when you took all the blue LEGOs!”) can help prevent future fights from spiraling out of control.
Teen Years
Bad news for parents of school-agers: per a study led by David Finkelhor of the University of New Hampshire, sibling attacks, or acts of physical violence toward a sibling like shoving and punching, peak from ages 6 to 12. Over a third of children in the study experienced sibling violence in the past year. For around 5 percent, the violence was severe enough to leave a lasting mark like a bruise, a chipped tooth or even a broken bone. While violence between parents and children or between spouses is viewed as unacceptable, violence between siblings is often overlooked by parents as normal squabbling, says Finkelhor. In fact, repeated sibling attacks can have serious repercussions. In the study, children under age 10 who were repeatedly attacked by a sibling in the past year experienced signs of trauma, including sleep problems, depression and fear of the dark. If sibling spats often get physical and seem one-sided, with one sibling most often playing the role of antagonist, seek help from your child’s pediatrician or a licensed counselor.
What’s mine is yours? Not so fast. According to Catherine Salmon of the University of Redlands, up to 95 percent of siblings say that personal property — a highly important part of children’s budding sense of identity — is a point of conflict among siblings. Though teens may be able to work through some property-related conflicts on their own, parents may not know if and when to intervene. “It can be a natural and healthy developmental process for siblings to work out conflicts on their own,” says licensed psychologist Vanessa Roddenberry, Ph.D., founder of Praxis Psychological Services in Raleigh. Parents who constantly step in risk invalidating teens’ emotions and communicating that fighting is an effective way to get caregivers’ attention and focus, she notes. But when sibling fighting escalates to yelling or physical fighting, parents can help by separating siblings, putting the disagreement on pause while each party takes time to cool off and process their emotions separately. Once feelings have calmed, a kitchen table meeting moderated by parents can help get teen siblings on the same page and increase the chances that next time you won’t need to play referee.

LOVE ADULTING
5 Family-Friendly Breweries Central Florida is brimming with craft beer, and lucky for parents, many of these breweries have gotten on the family bandwagon. Grab an Uber and get out to enjoy some suds with your little buds at these family-friendly spots where people won't be giving you the side-eye. Words by Wendy Meyer
1. Crooked Can Brewing Company 426 W. Plant St., Winter Garden 407-395-9520 | crookedcan.com Located inside Plant St. Market in downtown Winter Garden, this place gives me all the feels! Crooked Can is definitely the place to be with little tykes. They are super accommodating and their outdoor space is perfect to chill without feeling like “those people who bring kids to the bar.” Weekends are peak family times, and there seems to be a fun event going on every weekend! While they don’t serve food, there are plenty of options inside the artisan market. Once you’ve finished shopping or stuffing your face, grab a Crooked Can McStagger or an ice cold Cloud Chaser. Both are currently on my Top 10 list of favorite beers. Seriously, this place will make you feel like a socially functioning human being again after what may have been months (or years) of parenting isolation.
2. Celery City Craft 114 S Palmetto Ave., Sanford 407-915-5541 | celerycitycraft.com Celery City, located in historic Downtown Sanford, showcases craft beers, ciders and wines. Surrounded by interesting shops, restaurants and a mega-cool playground at Fort Mellon Park, this taproom is set among brick-paved streets full of old Florida charm. This place could easily become your new favorite midweek hang with the kiddos. They offer a bistro menu that’s great for families because it’s not over-thought or too fancy — it’s just good food that’s not expensive. We like the peanut butter and celery, the cheese board and the killer soups! I was stoked to find my favorite Playalinda Brewing Company Pleasure Chest IPA on tap. They also have a large outdoor area with picnic tables that’s the perfect place to grab a beer and chill out with the babies (both fur and human). Adding to the fun, they host the Celery City Craft Mid-Week Market every Thursday night from 6–9 p.m., with local vendors and live music. Getting there could be half the fun — SunRail (sunrail.com) riders can take a free vintage-style trolley ride from the station to downtown. What kid wouldn’t love that?
3. Ocean Sun Brewing 3030 Curry Ford Rd., Orlando 407-745-5551 | oceansunbrewing.com Ocean Sun prides itself on being a family-friendly place to hang, which can totally be felt the minute you walk in the door. There’s a comfy little outdoor area with couches, games and a chalkboard. It's the perfect place to hang with the kids, eat some
of their fresh popcorn and enjoy a beer. I asked for a suggestion on an IPA, and my server brought me their Blue Bags IPA. I was not disappointed. In fact, this is one of the better IPAs I’ve ever tasted. I really appreciated the fact that no one made us feel uncomfortable or rushed, even with my kid in tow. If you’re looking for food, you can order from the restaurants nearby. Ocean Sun welcomes you to eat while enjoying a beer. Our favorite pizza joint (pizzabrunofl.com) is right down the street, so we opted to stop by there on the way home. The Hourglass District is becoming the place to be, and we are loving it.
4. Ten10 Brewing Company 1010 Virginia Dr., Orlando 407-930-8993 | ten10brewingcompany.com Located in the Mills50 area, Ten10 Brewing is a cool addition to one of my favorite neighborhoods. Personally, I think the best time to come in with my little guy is after school to grab a snack before we go shopping. Their “Find Your Center” Orange Tootsie Roll Stout is so delicious. I like to pair that with the Old Hearth soft pretzels, which I dip in homemade beer cheese and beer mustard. Your kids won’t be left out — they can order a TBone Root Beer, which Ten10 Brewing makes themselves. Of course, I had to taste the root beer, and it’s the perfect match to their housemade hot dogs. You probably wouldn’t expect this level of well thought-out food from a beer brewery, but Ten10 is doing everything from brews to food right. Worth noting: every one of their staff members greets my son with a smile and a “Hey buddy!,” which makes him feel really welcome.
5. Rock & Brews 7131 Red Bug Lake Rd., Oviedo | 407-956-4124 6897 S. Semoran Blvd., Orlando | 407-367-2840 rockandbrews.com Rock & Brews is technically a taproom (not a brewery), but it's family-friendly and has an extensive collection of craft beers, so we had to include it on our list. This place has a cool rock 'n' roll feel that isn’t too forced, and they play the best tunes. The food is good and not what you would anticipate from a chain restaurant. What totally blew me away was the area they have set up outside so the kids can play while the adults enjoy live music, leather couches and outdoor fire pits. The patio is a super-fun place for families to hang, and it's also pet-friendly. Your four-legged fur baby can even order a brew (more like beef broth in a beer bottle) from the special menu for dogs! This is the perfect place to hit up on a Friday night with your friends and family!

UNDERWATER WORLD OF THE OCTONAUTS
Sound the Octoalert! A huge fan of Captain Barnacles and the other Octonauts characters, there was no question what Eddie’s 4th birthday theme would be. The décor reflected the underwater world of the Octonauts with lots of ocean colors and sea life, including live fish centerpieces. Guests giggled as they put on Octonauts masks as they entered the party. The entertainment focused on outdoor fun: playground, bounce house, inflatable slide and ball pit. A balloon artist made sea creatures, and guests made their own charm bracelets. The cake and sweets included character cake pops, handdrawn Professor Inkling mousse cups, character cookies and an amazing ocean-themed cake. Each guest received a replica of Peso the Penguin's doctor bag filled with ocean treasures. The party was a huge success and a whole lot of fun. As the Octonauts say, “Until the next adventure!”

Mad Science with Ava
Scientist for the Day! Ava celebrated her 7th birthday and her love for science by inviting her friends to become scientists for the day. As guests arrived at Lab 7, they received personalized lab coats along with safety goggles and notebooks. The colorful décor included metallic touches and a variety of beakers to reflect the scientific theme. Following lunch, Mad Science presented a super-cool science demonstration. The mini scientists conducted chemistry experiments that involved slime, dry ice and cotton candy. The cake was topped with a bubbling beaker of dry ice — such fun for Ava and her friends!

Wizarding World of Harper
Witchcraft and Wizardry! For Harper’s 7th birthday, she wanted to feel like she had been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harper and her Muggle friends were all given robes, glasses and wands before they picked up their suitcases and headed to Platform 9 ¾. Upon arriving at Hogwarts, the guests were sorted into their houses by the Sorting Hat. The wizards-in-training were then treated to sweets and snacks from the snack cart as they watched a magical performance. An invitation to the dining hall followed, where the wizards decorated their goblets to enjoy two delicious potions with lunch: Polyjuice Potion and Pensieve Punch. After lunch, the wizards gathered in Professor Snape’s classroom to assist with the creation of slime and to make a special Butter Beer recipe. Next, the wizards gobbled up cake and sweets and even caught some golden snitches to take home. The evening finished with guests choosing their Patronus to make s’mores and bid farewell to Hogwarts.

#MomHack Birthday Party Presents Local blogger Dana Nichols of Momlando.com shares her hack on how to save some time and anxiety by making these adorable and custom party gifts for kids.
If your life is anything like mine, you’re going to a lot of birthday parties. And, if you’re anything like me, you’re stressed about juggling them — not just the parties and RSVPs but the gifts too! I love gift-giving, but run out of time and buy things last-minute. I mean really last-minute. More than once, I’ve bought gifts on the way to the party. I finally decided I needed to step up my mom game. I ordered a ton of craft supplies from Amazon to make custom arts and crafts kits to keep on-hand. This way, we can graband-go for my kid’s next invite to Monkey Joe’s.
Here’s a list of the supplies I included in each package: • ALEX Toys Artist Studio Sponge Painting Shapes (2) • Lakeshore Easy-Clean Craft Trays – Set of 4 (1) • Melissa & Doug Drawing Paper Pad (6 x 9 inches) – 50 Sheets, 4-Pack (1) • U.S. Art Supply 18-color Children’s Washable Tempera Paint Set (1) • U.S. Art Supply 10-piece Large Round Chubby Paintbrushes (1) • Rimobul Artist Studio Sponge Painters – Set of 6 (2) I used my handy-dandy Silhouette Cameo (the ultimate DIY machine to cut and print anything) to personalize the kits and make the package extra special. I’m all set for our next four birthday parties, and I know the future Dana will thank me for my planning! #preparedmom
