Editor's Note Jackie & Maddy at the beach in Venice, Florida

Hey, Let’s Get Away! If you’re planning to travel with a toddler this summer, here’s a life hack: Go to the dollar store before leaving to buy a random assortment of things, like a kitschy spatula, a colorful plastic cup or an interesting sponge. The goal is to find items that your very curious child has never seen before. That way during your trip, you can pull each treasure out one at a time to serve as a thrilling new “toy” for them to play with, keeping them happily distracted from the fact they’re confined to a car or plane for an unusually long period of time. While unconventional, I found it worked like a charm, making our journey a little more bearable. However, no matter what age your child is — whether they’re a few months old or on the cusp of puberty — summer travel is always slightly anxiety-inducing. One way to cut back on those pre-trip jitters is to plan a vacation within state lines, which is why our travel feature on page 16 is dedicated to places in Florida that feel like an exotic getaway. You can also play tourist locally by trying global grub at the international dining spots on page 14 & 15. We’ve also compiled a list of area splash pads (page 32) that are cool both figuratively and literally. Plus, Central Florida REALTOR® Carla Stanton helps us break down the region’s trending neighborhoods for those who are new to the area or thinking about relocating on page 22. Finally, on page 35, you'll find our annual Party Guide, highlighting the best vendors and businesses to throw an epic bash. I know I’ll be referring to it when it comes to planning my daughter’s second birthday — although I’m sure she’d be just as happy to spend her special day in a dollar store. It’s the simple things in life, right? Regardless of where the next two months take you, whether it’s jetting somewhere tropical, setting off on a fun family road trip or just chilling in your backyard, enjoy every moment and remember to relax. Summer is only here for a short time! PLAYfully,

Maddy Zollo Rusbosin @maddyzollo

Let the Games Begin! The 2022 Special Olympics USA Games are being held in Orlando June 5–12. Be on the lookout for two local competitors, brothers Matt and Ryan Letcher. Matt is competing in basketball while Ryan is competing in swimming. The Letchers grew up in West Orange County, mostly calling Winter Garden home, and both currently work at Publix. “Special Olympics has changed my life by allowing me to participate in sports that I might not have had the chance to experience before,” says Ryan. “Attending the 2022 USA Games is an accomplishment that I have been working toward the past few years. It shows me that hard work and determination pay off,” adds Matt. The siblings are serious inspiration to kids in Central Florida who are dreaming of competing in the games themselves. Top FIVE Must-Haves for Summer:

Five Reasons You Should Hire a Photographer on Your Next Vacation By Amy Nielsen I have a large family, so getting everyone together for a vacation is quite an accomplishment, and it doesn’t happen often. When the stars align, I make sure to allot part of the vacation budget for professional family photos. Here’s why: 1. Without a professional, the person who takes the photo ends up getting left out. 2. You can use a timer or ask a stranger for a group shot, but nothing compares to a professional photographer’s eye for framing, shooting and editing your photos. 3. Photographers know the best locations and times of day to capture your family vacation beautifully. Many resorts have photographers on-site and offer reasonable packages. 4. Vacation photoshoots can be used for other purposes. Before your trip, brainstorm any photos you anticipate needing soon (holiday cards, graduations, engagements, websites, headshots, etc.). Ask your photographer to shoot those, too. 5. You’ve put SO much time and money into this vacation. Having quality photos will help keep the memory alive long after the vacation is over!

1. Huge Round Towel With fun shapes and bold prints, its perfect for summertime shenanigans (and selfies!). $32, Tugboat & the Bird 2. Buzz Patch Mosquito Patches An all-natural insect repellent in sticker form, without the greasy feel. $36, naturalpatch.com 3. Native Shoes Super-breathable, easy to wash and snug-fitting, this is the perfect summer footwear for little feet. $39-$53, Tugboat & the Bird 4. Splash Swim Goggles These swim goggles feature a tangle-free strap! $25, Tugboat & the Bird 5. Inflatable Rocking Sphere Kids will love to roll, tilt, climb and bounce on this giant inflatable sphere. $165, Tugboat & the Bird

Small portions and modest prices mean you can sample your way through the menu, making it ideal for adventurous foodies. Save room for the coconut-battered fried plantains dessert.

At this Brazilian steakhouse, the full churrasco experience includes unlimited grilled meats, three side dishes (mac ‘n cheese or fries, anyone?) and a buffet of Brazilian specialties, fruit and salads. Kids love signaling the roving waiters with a green card to say “more please” or red to pause the action while parents love the child-friendly pricing.

Star Wars fans can now book their experience for this new two-night resort package that includes all your meals, non-stop entertainment and admisison to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. An added bonus: Lightning Lane passes to two Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge rides. Once onboard the Galactic Starcruiser, guests are quickly immersed into a saga that truly feels like they're in a galaxy far, far away. It’s all accomplished by Disney’s magical effects, out-of-this-world interior design, close-up character interactions and the immersive Star Wars storyline. This vacation is fact-paced and puts you at the center of your very own outer space adventure without ever leaving the ground. Upon arrival, guests are transported to the Halcyon Starcruiser’s lobby, where they can mingle with beings both Earthly and alien before settling into their cabin. No ordinary resort hotel room, each cabin comes with an out-of-this-world view and its own D3-09 droid to help you navigate your entire experience. After lunch on the first day, activities move at lightning speed as your adventure begins. Before you know it, the First Order storms the ship and the role playing begins. Will you be on the side of the Resistence or the First Order? Regardless, guests work together to master the spaceship’s controls during bridge training and learn to harness The Force during lightsaber training. Once you’ve worked up a healthy appetite, it’s off to dinner and a show, featuring an epic performance by galactic superstar Gaia and her alien DJ. AMAZING KIDS!

Three Amazing Kid-preneurs These enterprising Orlando youngsters are turning their passions into side hustles. They’re the perfect inspo for fellow kids who are looking to start up their own business venture this summer break. By Cindy Marie Jenkins

Posh Paws Ava Pergram’s (age 11) ultimate dream is to invent a medicine that pets love to eat. In the meantime, she decided to start saving money for veterinary school by making her own dog bandanas and bow ties. She got the idea for Posh Paws while looking for cute accessories for her dog, Sunny. Ava taught herself how to use a sewing machine, measure the correct amount of fabric and choose patterns her potential customers might like. “I pick ones that I think would be trendy or popular,” Ava says. While Ava plans to offer her wares at several farmers’ markets this summer, she’s also setting up shop online so she can introduce Posh Paws to even more pups. MacsDesigns From the minute you meet Macayla Camps (age 13), you know you’re talking to a passionate businessperson. Her company, MacsDesigns, animates clients’ photos, turning them into unique illustrations through an iPad app. “I began learning new tips and tricks and started to create my own version of the art,” explains Macayla about her artistic process. Jessica Swartout, a family friend and local photographer, was impressed by Macayla’s perseverance and eye for design, so she hired her to make 30 drawings as gifts. That first big order prompted Macayla to begin collaborating with other photographers, including her own mom, Jackie Camps, owner of JBC Photography.

Dominic’s Treats When Dominic Capraro (age 13) claimed he could cook better than Food Network contestants, his dad challenged him to do just that. Before long, he was baking three–four hours a day, finessing his skills. His favorite recipe? Buckeyes, which is a frozen, chocolate-dipped peanut butter concoction. His first sale was at a pop-up event in the Hourglass District. “People liked my treats, so I thought I could make a business out of them,” Dominic explains. Always a shrewd business owner, Dominic uses a ledger to calculate his costs and profits while also tracking which days prove better for sales, He loves to read, so any profits he isn’t investing back into his treats go toward books. Neighborhood Vibes The Orlando area is one of the hottest real estate markets in the country, and it’s showing no signs of cooling down. While there’s plenty to love about living in a boomtown, trying to buy a home in established communities like Winter Park, College Park, Bay Hill, Windermere and Dr. Phillips can be exhausting and frustrating. So, we asked local real estate professional Carla Stanton to share her favorite up-and-coming alternatives and what she loves about them. A collaboration project between PLAYGROUND & Carla Stanton

NEED A REALTOR®? The daughter of a longtime Central Florida real estate broker, Carla Stanton grew up learning about Orlando and the vibrant and varied communities that surround it. Now a REALTOR® with Mainframe Real Estate, there’s nobody better qualified to help you find the perfect place to put down roots in Central Florida. Carlastanton.com | Carla@carlastanton.com | 321-356-3370

A Great Place to Nest Orlando is ringed with quaint neighborhoods oozing character and charm, but this one is truly a spot to put down roots.

Audubon Park }

This leafy neighborhood lining Corrine Drive between Baldwin Park and Ivanhoe Village has become a favorite haunt of Orlando’s landscaping-and-lattes set. Take a stroll along Mockingbird Lane or Cardinal Road and you’ll find beautifully-restored mid-century houses dressed up with all manner of flora. With eclectic boutiques, coffee shops, bakeries and fine dining an easy walk or bike ride away, homes here are highly coveted. • House Style: Mid-century block homes that are being renovated into Instagrammable abodes and bungalows. Almost everything is a fixerupper or has already been flipped.

• Neighborhood Vibe: Bohemian-chic. These trendsetters are committed to sustainability, authenticity and are all about supporting local small businesses.

• Neighborhood Gems: Leu Gardens, Palmer’s Garden & Goods, Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream, Stardust Video & Coffee, East End Market

• Real Estate Notes: One major factor for the influx of new residents is the recently opened Audubon Park School for grades K–8. Houses zoned for the school are rarely on the market for long.

• Best Playground: Mitchell L. Nutter Park • Community Events: Audubon Park Community Market, Zombietoberfest Night Market

Small-Town Charm These historic cities are having a Renaissance, thanks to revitalization projects and top-notch schools.

Winter Garden }

Winter Garden thrived for over a century as a center of commerce and agriculture before falling on hard times in the 1960s. Fortunately, the city protected its historic downtown area throughout the slump, and today the shops, cafes and restaurants along Plant Street are teeming with activity. It’s a favorite stop for cyclists exploring the West Orange Bike Trail. • House Style: Diverse housing options from fixer-uppers to newly planned communities

• Neighborhood Vibe: The storybook charm of this main street gives us all the feels.

• Neighborhood Gems: Plant Street Market, Axum Coffee, Garden Theatre, Central Florida Railroad Museum, West Orange Trail Bikes & Blades

• Real Estate Notes: Winter Garden's central location, just a 20-minute drive from downtown Orlando, Disney World and Universal Studios, has helped make it one of the region’s most sought-after communities. Home values in this golf cart friendly community have increased, and schools have improved.

• Best Playground: Chapin Station, Newton Park • Community Events: Fridays on the Plaza, Spring Fever in the Garden, Winter Garden Farmers Market

We decided to buy in Apopka because we knew the expressway was going to be expanded, which would promise growth. In the five years that we’ve lived here, we’ve seen larger companies plant roots here and a lot of smaller businesses pop up. We love Apopka and its small-town feel despite being just outside of the larger cities of Orlando and Altamonte Springs.” —The McKee Family 23 PLAYGROUND Jun / Jul 2021

Embracing New Urbanism No detail has been overlooked in the development of these modern communities. These walkable, self-contained neighborhoods were designed to deliver an idyllic lifestyle.

Although is it even possible to enjoy a movie without popcorn? We think not, so budget for a snack bar visit beforehand. • Head to the Beach While Florida is home to so many beautiful beaches, Cape Canaveral's Jetty Park is one of the best for families. It will cost you $15 to get in, but for that you get plenty of parking, tidy bathrooms and a store (in case you forgot something!), not to mention a playground and awesome fishing pier. If you hit it at the right time, you may be able to wave out the cruise ships as they leave or arrive to port. • Ride Bikes Lucky for bicycle enthusiasts, there are a ton of great paved trails to explore around Orlando. The Cross Seminole Trail has a selfie-worthy stop where you can play in a beautiful beach area at Howell Creek Bridge Trestle. Or, if you live on the other side of town, there’s the West Orange Trail that goes right through the center of Historic Downtown Winter Garden, making it a perfect place for a refreshment pit stop. • Hit Up the Library Quite possibly the last great bastion of ‘free,’ your local library offers free classes, workshops, both on-site and take-home activities for kids and so much more. And did we mention the thousands of books on every subject imaginable? Use it or lose it, people!
