PUBLISHER'S NOTE

Wrapping Up Another Year I'm always excited to feature the best activities and businesses for Central Florida families in our annual Family Favorite Awards article (page 25). In September, we asked our readers to vote for their family's favorite places, spaces and businesses in the area. We thank our winners for all the hard work they put into making Central Florida a great place to raise kids. In addition, we've compiled a list of the best events to help you get into the holiday spirit (page 20). Our friends Andrea and Cristina at Lou & Pepper set up a New Year's Eve party for kids to give you ideas for festive ways to celebrate (page 12). You can easily purchase the entire party package on their website at louandpepper.com. Annual family photos at Jetty Park, Cape Canaveral by Jessica Friend Photo Design

Now that I'm thinking about it, another way to hit the "easy button" this season is to pick up the Elfmas Kit from Holiday Enhancements (@holidayenhancements on Instagram and Facebook). This local mom duo creates some of the cutest custom gift packages, favors, tablescapes and more. I just bought a Thanksgiving hostess gift package, and I'm obsessed with their Elfmas Kit idea. Holiday Enhancements makes moving that darn elf just a little easier. The kit includes everything you need for 12 days of magical elf fun, plus downloadable instructions for each day along with a photo ($48). But, I digress... Another great resource is the "Kids Can Volunteer, Too" article (page 15) that lists fun and wellorganized ways kids can get involved in helping others during the holidays and all year long. I'm very proud to produce this magazine with a team of local parents. We hope you have a wonderful holiday and happy new year! PLAYfully Yours,

LOVE // KIDS CAN VOLUNTEER, TOO! Here’s a list of local volunteer opportunities for families with kids under age 12.

Foundation for Foster Children

#HashtagLunchbag

#HashtagLunchbag The goal of #HashtagLunchbag is to spread love by bringing bagged lunches to those in need. The organization hosts monthly events where attendees of all ages pack and distribute lunches to individuals struggling with homelessness and food insecurity in the downtown Orlando area. The movement started in Los Angeles about six years ago and has spread worldwide. hashtaglunchbag.org

United Against Poverty United Against Poverty (also known as UP Orlando) was created to inspire and empower people living in poverty to lift themselves and their families to selfsufficiency. Kids can attend the Family Volunteer Night, where they will help stock, clean and organize the shelves of the organization’s grocery store. This event takes place on the second Friday of every month, and pizza is provided. If you can’t make it to the monthly event, you can also sign up to volunteer as a family on an alternate date. uporlando.org/get-involved

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida There’s always work to be done at Second Harvest Orlando, a Feeding America food bank. Kids ages 10-15 are invited to volunteer with an adult chaperone. Kids

ages 5-9 can volunteer on Family Day. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks, which can include anything from bagging sweet potatoes to sorting canned goods or even packing disaster relief boxes for communities in need. shfbcf.volunteerhub.com

Salvation Army Orlando Salvation Army Orlando hosts a wide range of volunteer opportunities, but is well known for the Angel Tree project that takes place during the holiday season. In addition to the Angel Tree project, family-friendly activities include serving food to those in need on Thanksgiving, Dress-a-Bear and the Stuff the Stocking Challenge.

Serving over 2,000 children in foster care in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, the Foundation for Foster Children provides personalized support to individual kids based on what they need to succeed. Families can support this organization by participating in the Make a Birthday Card project. Your family can make genderneutral birthday cards, and then mail the cards to the organization to be distributed when a child celebrates a birthday. This is a fun and thoughtful project to work on together, and your family can do this from home. foundationforfosterchildren.org

Feeding Children Everywhere Feeding Children Everywhere’s mission is to provide healthy meals to those in need. Your family or group can get involved by participating in Hunger Project events, where you will work together with other volunteers to prepare food donations for distribution in domestic or international communities. feedingchildreneverywhere.com

salvationarmyorlando.org

Ronald McDonald House The three Central Florida-based Ronald McDonald Houses offer a variety of volunteer opportunities where kids can participate. The Baking Buddies program invites families or groups to bake sweets or casseroles. Families can also work together to assemble kits that include toiletries or individually wrapped snacks. Another way to help is by rounding up a group to prepare a meal together for the Share-AMeal program, where your group will shop for ingredients and then prepare a meal for Ronald McDonald House families in their on-site kitchen. rmhccf.org

Walden Community School A different kind of school

Over 16 years of evolution, our purpose transcends intellectual pursuits and academic achievement. We are a community of learners dedicated to educating the whole person. We challenge students to succeed academically and develop their social, emotional and creative capacities. In our collaborative and supportive setting, we enable our students to take ownership of their education and reach their highest potential.

Education is more than academics. Honoring each child’s inquisitiveness, creativity and uniqueness, is embedded in our philosophy and fuels our success. Seeing things from multiple points of view encourages global awareness and out-of-the-box thinking. Our students learn HOW to think, not WHAT to think.

Walden is a best-of practice school, combining Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Classical, Harvard’s Project Zero and Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Our curriculum is modeled after the Finnish educational system which is consistently rated one of the top in the world. Concept-based learning, essential questions, brain mapping, project-based learning and hands-on experiences are the core of our hand-crafted curriculum. Linking information and discovering meaningful connections is a natural result of our learning environment.

To Think. To Grow. To Make A Difference. To learn more or request a campus tour, visit www.waldencommunuityschool.com. 4595 HOWELL BRANCH RD WINTER PARK FL 32792 407.677.8225

Adjusting teaching styles to meet each student’s needs ensures greater opportunities for success. In our small classes, teachers are able to form close relationships, act as mentors and collaborate with each student to support growth and development. In our non-competitive, collaborative environment, children are not afraid to take risks and understand that mistakes are an integral part of learning. Thinking is growing, and that is the Walden difference.

The children at our school receive a high-quality education in a nurturing atmosphere of love and respect and are encouraged to develop a life-long love of learning. PARENT TESTIMONIAL:

My family and I cannot praise Learning Minds Montessori enough. They truly care about the well being of each and every child. Sumera is an incredible teacher who sticks to the highest practices following real Montessori curriculum. After trying other schools in the area I am profoundly grateful we found Learning Minds Montessori, a school that cares. My son loves his school and that speaks volumes! – Amy Moth

A Kids Gym Learning Academy Goes Big for Its 20th Birthday! Photos by Jessica Friend In celebration of its 20-year anniversary, A Kids Gym Learning Academy has expanded its facility to become bigger and better than ever before. What originated as a 12-student preschool and children’s gymnastics studio has grown to become a dynamic, hands-on learning environment with an eight-classroom preschool that includes a Think Tank (for hands-on science activities) and Control Room (computer lab) for all students to enjoy. Plus, kids in the bustling after-school program (with pickup at seven schools) get to enjoy an updated Study Hall and after-school gymnastics classes in the expanded gym area. A Kids Gym Learning Academy currently has openings in all classrooms and the Smart Start parent/child gym program. Call 407-365-6800 or visit akidsgym.com to schedule a tour and see this “special place kids can call their own.”

Florida Hospital for Children's Day of Giving On September 19, Florida Hospital for Children hosted their inaugural Day of Giving, a radio phone-in fundraising drive in partnership with Magic 107.7. All support raised helped families with urgent needs while their child battles cancer. From 5:3010 a.m., phones were answered by local celebrities — including Orlando Magic Ambassador and former Orlando Magic player Bo Outlaw, social media icon LeJuan James and 4Rivers Smokehouse owner and chef John Rivers. The Day of Giving raised more than $60,000, through the Pediatric Oncology Assistance Fund at Florida Hospital Foundation, to help families battling childhood cancer in Central Florida. Momlando’s Play Date at Ivanhoe Park Brewing Co. Photos by Jessica Connery Photography Momlando’s monthly play dates bring local families together at unique locations to have fun and forge new friendships. At this play date, local families gathered at Ivanhoe Park Brewing Co., where the parents sampled some brews while the kids rocked out with Ronnie D and crafted sticker projects with friends. A huge shout-out to the many dads who attended — if you brew it, they will come! Follow Momlando.com for upcoming adventures around the City Beautiful.
