A MESSAGE FROM MICHELLE
What do Disney, Dazzle and Daffodils have in common?
All are sure signs of spring in Cleveland!
On Monday, March 13, more than 200 3rd-5th grade students representing four Northeast Ohio elementary schools participated in the Disney Musicals in Schools Student Share on the stage of the Mimi Ohio Theatre. The joy these students exude onstage makes this one of my top two performances every year.
My other favorite performance? That would be the Dazzle Awards which celebrates the best in High School Musical Theater. This year’s event will
be held the evening of Saturday, May 20 in the KeyBank State Theatre.
I am always moved by the culminating shows of our two signature arts education programs. But that does not diminish my excitement for the recently announced 2023-24 KeyBank Broadway Series. With the blockbuster MJ The Musical in the line up alongside classics like Funny Girl and Company, we hope you move quickly to renew your season tickets.
Renewal also will be seen in our district as we install new marquees to bring the beauty of our 100-year-old, fully-restored theaters outdoors. These
renovations are currently underway – just in time for the warm weather ahead. Watch for news on a marquee unveiling event!
Finally, we are thrilled to welcome new President and CEO Craig Hassall. In this issue, you will learn more about Craig and his vision for the future.
There is so much to look forward to in the spring. Thank you for being an important part of Playhouse Square!

GET TO KNOW NEW PRESIDENT & CEO CRAIG HASSALL
GET TO KNOW NEW PRESIDENT & CEO CRAIG HASSALL
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE PLAYHOUSE SQUARE?
The more I learned about Playhouse Square, the more I thought, ‘This cannot be. They can’t have all these venues.’ It got serious enough that I came to Cleveland to meet some of the trustees and the search panel. These theaters are the most extraordinary assets. I’ve never seen places like this in the world, in such condition, in such proximity, that are so theaterfriendly.
The opportunity here is massive because this organization is in fantastic shape already – operationally, artistically, financially – that means there are more opportunities, there’s more we can do.
WHAT IS YOUR IMPRESSION OF PLAYHOUSE SQUARE SINCE YOUR ARRIVAL?
It’s been wonderful. I come to work every day with a smile on my face. Coming into these theaters, I’m still amazed by the quality, the scale, the finishes. They’ve been so beautifully restored.
The great thing for me coming in as the new president and CEO, I’m not helicoptering in from London to fix
this broken beast. Playhouse Square is far from broken. It’s incredibly successful. And you have the most extraordinary track record – the sales are amazing, the audiences are happy, the donors are supportive, the stakeholders love us and the staff is really happy. It’s obviously a great place to work.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON?
My job is settling in and learning how everything works. My job is to say, ‘Okay, this is an amazing setup we have here, what’s the next stage? Where do we go to take Playhouse Square even further?’
I think that means establishing a business plan, a five-year plan, working with the senior team and the trustees and staff.
We have a lot of ideas swirling around, and everyone here is super enthusiastic and there’s potential here to invest in things, but ideas are only ideas until they are in a framework.
WHERE DO YOU SEE OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH?
Getting our name out there – the more people hear about Playhouse Square, the more known we’ll be. Could we
be a home for the commissioning or the reworking or the development of musicals, for example? Make Playhouse Square the go-to for new works. If we do it in a comprehensive way, I’d like to imagine a time where you go to Nashville for country music, you go to New Orleans for jazz and you go to Cleveland for musicals. It’s not going to happen overnight, but if we aim for that, it will certainly be something that gets our name out there in a more comprehensive way.
These are a few of his favorite things…
Musical – Into the Woods
Book – Goodbye to Berlin written by Christopher Isherwood
Band – Muse
Movie – The Talented Mr. Ripley
Hobby – Theater
Childhood Memory – Chasing sheep
Restaurant in Cleveland – Blue Point
#1 on his Bucket List – Traveling to the Fjords
#1 on his Cleveland Bucket List – Ticking off the restaurants on his ever-growing Cleveland restaurant list

8TH ANNUAL DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS STUDENT SHARE
PRESENTED
BY DEE & JIMMY HASLAM
Starring: Chestnut Elementary School H Newton D. Baker School of the Arts H Old Brooklyn Community School H Sunbeam School
On March 13, students from our first-year DMIS schools gathered at Playhouse Square to perform live on the big stage for the first time since 2019. Each school spent the preceding 19 weeks working with the Playhouse Square Education Department and Teaching Artists to
“I thought this might be something that brings us together as a community. We saw so much growth in the students.”
create a sustainable musical theater program for their 3rd-5th grade students, starting with a 30-minute Disney KIDS Musical. Through the DMIS program, students develop selfconfidence and strengthen speaking and reading skills while learning musical theater techniques.
“They [the students] have specifically shown so much change in the way that they are presenting themselves on the stage. They are doing such a good job of taking their own creative liberties with it and seeing the characters come to life without me telling them how to do it has been really, really cool.”
“One of our students who has had just a lot of behavior issues and struggles in the classroom absolutely blossomed once he was given this chance to dance and to sing. I am thrilled that we did this for him.”
“Things that they [the students] did not think they’d be able to do, like fears that they’ve had, they’ve been able to overcome their fears and challenge themselves to do new things.”

SOCIAL JUSTICE SERIES
As the Education Department at Playhouse Square continues its commitment to providing comprehensive works to support our Social Justice Series for grades K-12, we are excited to have two new pieces in development.
With our sights on the 2024-25 season, The Velveteen Rabbit is targeted for Pre-K-4 classrooms. Based on the beloved book by Margery Williams, this new musical is being crafted in house with a script by Playhouse Square Director of Education Treva Offutt and music and lyrics by Staff Teaching Artist Molly Andrews-Hinders. Lead Teaching Artist Ananias Dixon will serve as the production’s assistant director., Lead Teaching Artist. Along with a local dream team of incredible actors and production artists, this piece will include puppets and masks, shadow work, and magical transformations.
The second piece will be based on the travels and connections of Frederick Douglass along the abolitionist speaking trail. Co-written by Ananias Dixon and prolific writer Lisa Langford, this piece intended for 6th-12th graders will have a strong movement and percussion base. Again, we will be celebrating local artists for this production.
The Education Department is proud to introduce “Social Justice Shorts” for its 2023-24 season. This bundled series will showcase bite-sized performances with powerful lessons through three short plays written by award-winning storyteller, poet and playwright Idris Goodwin and produced by Playhouse Square. These video shorts and accompanying primer videos will be crafted to support important conversations and increase civic dialogue in the classroom.
