DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible. Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues. Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you. We look forward to welcoming you back to Playhouse Square again soon and invite you to consider planning your next visit to see & Juliet, Peter Pan or Shucked.

With best wishes,

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square

Welcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer — and it’s right here in Key’s hometown of Cleveland.

Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. As in years past, the team here at Playhouse has worked very hard to bring you a spectacular lineup of shows, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store this year.

For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve.

Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgages and transformative philanthropy.

Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.

Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

Sincerely,

SPOTLIGHT ON News

A SUPREME EXPERIENCE

History was made on December 14, 2024, when Supreme Court Justice —and longtime theater lover — Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first member of the nation’s highest court to appear on a Broadway stage. Jackson, who already holds a place in history as the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, made her Broadway debut in a one-night-only walk-on role in the musical & Juliet, the nine-time Tony nominated musical which flips the script on the Shakespeare classic Romeo & Juliet by imaging what Juliet’s life could’ve been like if she hadn’t ended it all over Romeo. And while as of now we don’t expect any history making special guests at our engagement, you still won’t want to miss the national tour of & Juliet during its run at Playhouse Square March 4–23 as part of the KeyBank Broadway Series! Tickets are on sale now at playhousesquare.org.

ORIGINAL HADESTOWN CAST MEMBERS REUNITE

The West End production of Hadestown, currently playing at London’s Lyric Theatre, is reuniting five original Broadway and National Theatre cast members in their principal roles for a limited engagement this winter. Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Tony nominees Amber Gray (Persephone), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice) and Patrick Page (Hades), and Tony winner André De Shields (Hermes) will perform with the Lyric Theatre company February 11–March 9, 2025. Hadestown played a sold-out engagement at the National Theatre in 2018 before transferring to Broadway in 2019. It continues as one of the 50 longest running shows in Broadway history and holds the record for highest grossing musical and longest running show in the 100-year history of the Walter Kerr Theatre.

GET READY FOR A GREAT PERFORMANCE

Suffs, the Tony Award-winning original musical chronicling the trials and tribulations of the women’s suffrage movement, may have closed on Broadway in early January, but not before the production was preserved on film by PBS’ Great Performances. While an air date has not yet been announced, PBS was on site to film live performances at New York City’s Music Box Theatre December 20-22, 2024. Suffs, which opened on Broadway in April 2024, was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning for Best Book and Best Original Score. A national tour will begin in Seattle in the fall of 2025 and will visit Playhouse Square as part of our 2025–2026 KeyBank Broadway Series. More information available at playhousesquare.org/seasonpreview.

DAZZLE AWARDS ALUMNI ON BROADWAY

From the Playhouse Square stage to the Great White Way, two Dazzle Awards alumni are making their Broadway debuts this season. Actor Colin Trudell has been cast in Lincoln Center’s Floyd Collins alongside Jeremy Jordan, while musician Sophie Manoloff is playing trumpet for the revival of Gypsy starring Audra McDonald. Trudell and Manoloff participated in Playhouse Square’s Dazzle Awards while attending Rocky River High School. Trudell was one of five Dazzle Awards Best Actor Nominees in 2016, while Manoloff performed in the school’s Best Musical numbers. The future is bright for these two shining stars!

A SWEET ESCAPE

MARQUEE MOMENTS

Before or after a show at Playhouse Square, visitors can check out Marquee Moments presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company. This special experience showcases the capabilities of the PSQ Media Network through video, light and sound with a synchronized digital presentation. It runs on the Playhouse Square marquees and other video screens throughout the PSQ District Monday through Saturday at 6:45 p.m., 7 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. and at other times throughout the weekend. The full schedule, which is subject to change, is available at playhousesquare.org/marqueemoments. Guests are encouraged to share their photos and videos on social media using #MarqueeMoments.

Get ready to dance the night away and embrace your sweet side at Playhouse Square’s annual Jump Back Ball. The fundraiser, hosted by Playhouse Square’s young professionals group Partners, features live entertainment, food and drinks, games of chance and décor inspired by the theme — “Candy in the Land.” This 21-and-over event takes place on Saturday, March 1. Proceeds raised through this event benefit Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and education programs, including sensory-friendly programming, Disney Musicals in Schools, the Dazzle Awards and Classroom Connections Workshops. Tickets are available at playhousesquare.org.

SPOTLIGHT ON Donors

THE IMPACT OF A DREAM

Playhouse Square is a special place for many people in our community, including donor Tricia Bestic Niswander and her family.

“Playhouse Square is more than a theater; it’s a cornerstone of our community. It began with a dream and has grown into a breathtaking facility that brings top-quality performances to our region. Supporting this mission means ensuring everyone, especially children, experiences the magic of live theater.

For me, Playhouse Square is personal. As a performer and director here since 2003, I’ve shared countless memories with my family — like watching my toddler dance on stage during warm-ups. This place has shaped my journey, inspiring me to pursue my MFA. Now, as an educator, I pass on those gifts.

Playhouse Square revitalized downtown, created jobs, and turned a once-empty corridor into a thriving area where people want to live and invest. Supporting it means supporting our schools, our economy, and the joy that theater brings to us all.”

Donors like the Niswanders and others are helping to support the future of our community by investing in Playhouse Square. We are grateful for their generosity and belief in the impact of the arts in Cleveland. Visit playhousesquare.org/waystogive or

GIVING BACK to Playhouse Square

Playhouse Square is a community-based not-for-profit organization which depends upon philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. More than $7 million dollars must be raised annually to help Playhouse Square meet its mission of operating and maintaining the historic theaters, expanding arts education outreach, and investing in the community through area development. The following are charitable opportunities which support Playhouse Square:

Donor Circle

The Donor Circle is a program for individuals who support Playhouse Square with an annual gift of $200 or more. Donor Circle donors are offered perks and benefits to enhance their experience at Playhouse Square. All giving levels receive access to pre-sale and performance announcements. At select giving levels, donors are offered perks such as donor reserved seating for select performances, access to the RJF Presidents’ Club and lower-level access in the Playhouse Square Garage. Companies can also contribute via the Corporate Donor Circle program. This program offers similar benefits as listed above, but provides enhancements to meet the needs of companies wanting to increase their visibility in the community and strengthen business relationships.

Partners is the official young professionals group of Playhouse Square, providing those in their 20s and 30s with opportunities to meet new people, volunteer their time, improve their leadership skills and attend fun events. At select giving levels, donors also have access to ticketing benefits, including presales and donor reserved seating. Young professionals can join partners for as little as $60 per year. Contact: Katie Remark, 216-640-8721, playhousesquare.org/partners.

In the spirit of fun and celebration, Leading Ladies is designed to engage women by providing the opportunity to connect with each other through a shared passion for Playhouse Square and its not-forprofit mission. Members are invited to four exclusive events throughout the year, such as pre-show cocktail receptions, special guest speaker luncheons, and behind-the-scenes experiences. An annual membership is $250. Contact: Leanne Dewyer, 216-640-8411

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE History

Playhouse Square Education Department

Since its inception in 1998, the Playhouse Square Education Department has remained committed to including the widest possible audience through streaming initiatives, sensory-friendly performances and its social justice series. The department is unique in the performing arts industry for the variety of programs it offers, the partnerships it initiates and the access it provides students, educators and aspiring artists to performing arts professionals. The Education Department oversees The Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman, Disney Musicals in Schools presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, as well as school matinee performances, Children’s Theater Series and Family Theater Day. The department also manages the free Broadway Buzz pre-show talks that are held before most KeyBank Broadway Series performances. For more than 25 years, the Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops and classes — most with minimal or no fees thanks to the generosity of our donors — and its nationally recognized performances and arts education programming have impacted hundreds of thousands of people in Cleveland and around the world, as they have enriched individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and means.

The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.

A Change in History?

One of many fascinating items to be found in the book Playhouse Square: An Entertaining History deals with the infamous John Wilkes Booth. Booth performed locally at the old Academy of Music, which was one of the first drama schools in the country and was located at 1371 W. 6th Street. It was at that Cleveland Academy where he would play his last role prior to performing at Washington D.C.’s Ford Theatre where he would assassinate President Lincoln. (Might history have been changed if the Academy had held over Booth’s play for an extended run?)

There Goes the Neighborhood!

The 1870s ushered in the golden age for Euclid Avenue — known as Millionaire’s Row — as the street became a stretch of grand mansions, with grounds often extending as far as Lake Erie, and stately elm trees arching over the avenue.

The Playhouse Square Chandelier

But by Cleveland’s Centennial in 1896, Euclid Avenue residents were likely muttering, Well, there goes the neighborhood! as the dirt street was paved with sandstone, and businessmen began to buy up and tear down the mansions and towering elms to make way for commercial ventures.

Streetcar lines on the once totally residential stretch hastened the creation of a commercial district, forcing wealthy families to move even farther east on Euclid Avenue. In another 30 years, the district would see the birth of the five main theaters that would eventually become Playhouse Square.

The Mural Above the Fireplace

Above the fireplace at the rear of the KeyBank State Theatre auditorium, an original mural hangs despite its near-tragic loss. Removed from the wall in the early 1970s prior to the scheduled demolition of the venue, the mural eventually turned up in the basement of a piano store and was repurchased by Playhouse Square for $200.

The recovered mural was badly torn, having originally been painted on burlap then glued to the wall. The challenge of restoring the artwork fell to the Theater District’s Bonfoey Company. Artisans sanded the glue from the burlap and attached the cleaned mural to canvas via beeswax.

The next step was to clean and restore the work where needed. A stretcher for the canvas had to be custom-made. To eliminate tears and wrinkles, the stretcher was designed to expand and contract with the theater’s climactic changes and held together with springs (no nails or screws). It took Bonfoey employees 18 months to restore the painting at a cost of $8,500.

Although the creator of this mural is unknown, it is suspected to be Italian artist Sampitrotti, who had painted three murals for the original Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby. (Those murals were later destroyed in the Ohio’s 1964 lobby fire.)

World’s Longest Lobby Explained

In 1920 as the Loew’s chain anticipated building in the area that would come to be known as Playhouse Square, it was discovered there wasn’t sufficient room to build two theaters side by side in the available space.

Since it was important that the proposed theater marquees be located on Euclid Avenue, an architectural plan was devised. Even though the KeyBank State Theatre would be completed and

open 21 months before the Connor Palace, it was decided to build the KeyBank State behind the Connor Palace. This led to the construction of the KeyBank State’s 320-foot-long lobby, reported to be the longest theater lobby in the world. The Mimi Ohio Theatre would then be built on the other side of the KeyBank State, giving all three theaters the desired Euclid Avenue marquee frontage.

Officially Historic

In 1978, Playhouse Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of U.S. historic sites worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.

A Phoenix from the Ashes

In 1964, the Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby and auditorium were destroyed by fire. When the fledgling Playhouse Square organization restored the spaces in 1982, funding and time constraints made it possible only for the auditorium to be fully restored. Thanks to a gift from the George Gund Foundation, the lobby was re-created in its original splendor in 2016. You can watch a documentary about the project, “Restoring the Legacy,” on Playhouse Square’s YouTube channel.

Re-Creating History

We call the completed Mimi Ohio Theatre George Gund Foundation Lobby project a “re-creation” rather than a restoration. Why? There was nothing left to restore after a 1964 fire destroyed the space. To reproduce the lobby’s original 1921 splendor, architects, restoration specialists and Playhouse Square staff conducted exhaustive research of the original drawings by architect Thomas Lamb, photo archives and a few remaining bits of ornamental plaster detail to gain a thorough understanding of the space and inform the plans for re-creating the lobby.

Broadway to Buildings

Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand? At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and

open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 1.7 million square feet of property owned by the organization and another 1.5 million square feet outside the theater district. Other performing arts centers have since looked to our expertise as a model.

YPs Take the Lead

Best known as the masterminds behind the annual Jump Back Ball benefit, Playhouse Square’s young professionals group – Partners – was formed in 1991. Since then, hundreds of young professionals engage with Playhouse Square each year to build leadership skills, raise funds and volunteer in support of our not-for-profit mission, enjoy shows together, network and have fun!

Keeping Up the KeyBank State Theatre

First restored more than 30 years ago, the KeyBank State Theatre was repainted from the street to the proscenium in 2015. The new, cohesive color palette showcases the beauty and craftsmanship of the nearly 100-year-old theater. It took 25 painters 12,500 hours and 595 gallons of paint in 15 different colors to complete the project, which also included 6000 sheets of new metal leafing in the auditorium dome and the application of a historically accurate wall-covering design. While the theater was dark, its lighting fixtures and restrooms received major upgrades.

What’s in a Logo?

The Playhouse Square logo we use today – a tilted burgundy square with a capital P in its center –was introduced in 2008 to capture the enduring spirit of entertainment and excitement. Each of the logo’s graphic elements has meaning: the exclamation point with a star in the “P” symbolizes excitement and innovation; the swirl in the “P” represents creativity and forward motion; the tilted square symbolizes Playhouse Square as a destination; and the burgundy color gives nod to the color scheme of our historic theaters.

Going Green

While red is the color most often associated with theaters, Playhouse Square is making efforts to go

“green.” You will find receptacles for recycling paper, plastic and cans throughout the complex. Lighting fixtures are being switched to LED for increased energy efficiency. And the Playhouse Square administrative office is making strides towards going paperless.

Patterns in Plaster

As you walk through the theaters, you may notice various patterns within the plaster decoration. Common are dentil, lamb tongue, rope and rosettes. Other patterns you may see have been associated with certain meanings since they were first used hundreds or even thousands of years ago, such as the acanthus leaf (immortality), egg and dart (life and death), and the palm leaf, first used in ancient Egypt as a reference to the Nile River. In the KeyBank State Theatre, if you look closely and carefully, you can find ox skulls, which were believed to offer protection from natural elements. And throughout the theaters, you will find griffins, mythical creatures thought of as guardians.

The Show That Saved Playhouse Square

After seeing a performance of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris at Cleveland State University, Ray Shepardson — the man who was the driving force behind the saving of Playhouse Square’s theaters — decided to stage the show in the KeyBank State Theatre lobby for three weeks. Clevelanders flocked to the performances and the show’s run extended to more than two years, proving that audiences would return to Playhouse Square and to downtown.
