DEAR FRIENDS Welcome
Happy New Year! We wish you a joyful and healthy 2025.
Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.
Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.
Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.
Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you. We look forward to welcoming you back to Playhouse Square again soon and invite you to consider planning your next visit to see Parade, & Juliet, or Peter Pan
With best wishes,
Craig Hassall AM President & CEO
Brent Ballard Chair, Board of Trustees

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square
Welcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer — and it’s right here in Key’s hometown of Cleveland.
Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. As in years past, the team here at Playhouse has worked very hard to bring you a spectacular lineup of shows, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store this year.
For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve.
Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgages and transformative philanthropy.
Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.
Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Michaela Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market President
SPOTLIGHT ON News
BROADWAY MEETS MUSIC’S BIGGEST NIGHT
The 2025 GRAMMY Awards is right around the corner, and one Broadway show will be recognized with one of music’s highest honors. This year’s nominees for Best Musical Theater Album are Hell’s Kitchen, Merrily We Roll Along, The Notebook, The Outsiders, Suffs and The Wiz. Will the winner be one of the performances coming to Playhouse Square in the 2025-26 KeyBank Broadway Series — Hell’s Kitchen, The Notebook or Suffs? Or could it be one that has already graced the Connor Palace stage — The Wiz? Or maybe even the show that won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical — The Outsiders — will come up with another win! The awards show airs on CBS and Paramount Plus on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m.
QUIT PLAYING GAMES (WITH MY HEART)
Former *NSYNC member Joey Fatone may not be a stranger to Broadway, but performing songs on stage made famous by a different 90s boy band may be a new experience! After two decades away from the stage, Fatone returns to Broadway in January for a limited nine-week engagement as Lance in the hit musical & Juliet. The musical features songs by songwriter and producer Max Martin, and while there are some *NSYNC songs on the soundtrack, Fatone’s role means he will have to perform two songs made famous by Backstreet Boys, another boy band popular in the late 90s. This is Fatone’s third Broadway credit, having previously played Mark in Rent (2002) and Seymour in the revival of Little Shop of Horrors (2004).
A SMASHING HIT!
What’s not to love with a musical about show business? The hit TV show Smash, which ran for two seasons on NBC in 2012–2013, has inspired a new Broadway musical by the same name to debut next year. The musical gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a fictional Marilyn Monroe musical, including all of the dramatic and comedic situations one might expect to encounter in the staging of a show. Among those already cast in the show are Smash TV show alum Krysta Rodriguez, along with Broadway veterans Brooks Ashmanskas, Bella Coppola, Kristine Nielson and Caroline Bowman (who entertained Cleveland audiences as Elsa in the national tour of Frozen in 2022). Previews begin in March, with an official opening scheduled for April 10, 2025.
DAZZLE ALUM MAKES BROADWAY DEBUT
Actor Steven Huynh may be making his Broadway debut as the standby for Darren Criss in the new musical Maybe Happy Ending, but his career has roots right here at Playhouse Square. Ten years ago Huynh was one of five Best Actor nominees at the inaugural Dazzle Awards, Playhouse Square’s high school musical theater awards program which sends Best Actor and Best Actress winners on to compete in the national Jimmy Awards in New York City. Huynh credits his Dazzle Awards experience as the point when he realized just how much he enjoyed being on stage as an actor and allowed him to think about the possibility of a career in the field. This star is definitely shining bright!

Playhouse Square Day of Giving
MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
Playhouse Square’s Day of Giving is Feb. 5
On February 5, join us for Playhouse Square’s Day of Giving. Your donation helps keep these theaters thriving and supports programs that make the arts accessible to everyone in our community. Learn more at playhousesquare.org/givingday or scan the QR code below. February 5 is an important date for Playhouse Square. It celebrates the day in 1921 when the now KeyBank State Theatre opened, beginning Cleveland’s journey to becoming one of the world’s premier arts districts. Decades later, community support saved these historic theaters, transforming Playhouse Square into a vibrant hub for the performing arts.

GIVING BACK to Playhouse Square
Playhouse Square is a community-based not-for-profit organization which depends upon philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. More than $7 million dollars must be raised annually to help Playhouse Square meet its mission of operating and maintaining the historic theaters, expanding arts education outreach, and investing in the community through area development. The following are charitable opportunities which support Playhouse Square:
Donor Circle
The Donor Circle is a program for individuals who support Playhouse Square with an annual gift of $200 or more. Donor Circle donors are offered perks and benefits to enhance their experience at Playhouse Square. All giving levels receive access to pre-sale and performance announcements. At select giving levels, donors are offered perks such as donor reserved seating for select performances, access to the RJF Presidents’ Club and lower-level access in the Playhouse Square Garage. Companies can also contribute via the Corporate Donor Circle program. This program offers similar benefits as listed above, but provides enhancements to meet the needs of companies wanting to increase their visibility in the community and strengthen business relationships.
Individual Giving Contact: Mary Winchester, 216-640-8412, playhousesquare.org/donorcircle.

Partners
2024-25 Partners Co-Chairs: Zoë Ingram & Ali Swift
Partners is the official young professionals group of Playhouse Square, providing those in their 20s and 30s with opportunities to meet new people, volunteer their time, improve their leadership skills and attend fun events. At select giving levels, donors also have access to ticketing benefits, including presales and donor reserved seating. Young professionals can join partners for as little as $60 per year. Contact: Katie Remark, 216-640-8721, playhousesquare.org/partners.
Leading Ladies
In the spirit of fun and celebration, Leading Ladies is designed to engage women by providing the opportunity to connect with each other through a shared passion for Playhouse Square and its not-forprofit mission. Members are invited to four exclusive events throughout the year, such as pre-show cocktail receptions, special guest speaker luncheons, and behind-the-scenes experiences. An annual membership is $250. Contact: Leanne Dewyer, 216-640-8411
Endowment and Planned Giving
Share your love for Playhouse Square when you plan for the future. Individuals and families that have declared their intention to include Playhouse Square in their estate plans, whether by will, trust or life income arrangement, are recognized through Legacy Circle. PROGRAM NOTE David Greene
Yann Martel’s acclaimed 2001 novel Life of Pi combines adventure, survival, spirituality and storytelling. Piscine (Pi) Patel is a teen boy from Podicherry, India. His family owns a zoo until the 1970s when India faced political unrest and economic instability. In search of a better life, Pi’s family sold the zoo and, with some of their animals, boarded a cargo ship bound for Canada. When the ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Pi is left alone on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, a zebra, a hyena and an orangutan.
For the next 227 days, Pi faces extreme challenges as he fights for survival, dealing with hunger, thirst and the dangerous animals sharing his lifeboat. Relying on his knowledge of zoology, his faith and his psychological and physical resilience, Pi battles time, the weather and the animals as he literally and metaphorically navigates the turbulent waters.
Long before bowing on Broadway and London’s West End, Martel’s novel sold more than 15 million copies, won multiple awards for fiction and, in 2012, was adapted as a major motion picture, winning four Academy Awards. The compelling storytelling and layered narrative in the original source material provided great flexibility for adaptation.
In 2017, Lolita Chakrabarti started adapting Life of Pi for the stage. She spent the first eight months researching animal behavior, zoos, religion and the political situation in India. She met with Yann Martel to discuss the meaning of the story, and came away with the idea that there is no single answer to what this story is about. The book, the film and the play each ask the audience to choose which story they believe to be true, invoking personal interpretation and imagination.
Martel’s book is vividly descriptive, allowing the reader’s imagination to bring the text to life. Chakrabarti and her co-creators extended that text, capturing the essence of the original story while reshaping it for the collaborative nature of theater. With collaborators Tim Lutkin, Tony Award winner for Best Lighting Design; Tim Hatley and Andrzej Goulding, Tony Award winners for Best Scenic Design; Carolyn Downing, Tony Award winner for Best Sound Design; and Finn Caldwell and Nick Barnes, exceptional Puppet Designers; this creative team brings us a truly magical, mesmerizing and memorable physical production.
The immersive sensory experience created by these experts of their craft left me entranced. The sounds of the rough ocean are intense. The vastness of the water, violent nature of the storms and varying emotions of Pi are made visible by realistic projection and dynamic lighting. The puppets — designed with extraordinary detail — use expressive movements and sounds that help make them feel alive, and allow us to connect emotionally while appreciating the artistic achievement that brings them to life.
I hope that the inventive staging and profound storytelling in Life of Pi stays with you after the curtain comes down. With a story that specifically asks you to choose what you personally believe, this play will mean different things to different people — a truly democratic story, emphasizing one of the greatest powers of the art of theater.
Enjoy,

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE History
Marquees on Display
The Playhouse Square District is shining brighter than ever before with our magnificent marquees and outdoor digital signage. The marquees’ designs were inspired by each historic theater with the ceiling of each marquee capturing elements from the grand ceiling of its respective theater. The marquees are equipped with localized sound to welcome audiences with thematic soundtracks, as well as sustainable, energy-efficient LED lighting that can complement shows, holidays and other themes. Guests can catch the Marquee Moment presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company, every night before entering and leaving their performances at the theaters.
The Playhouse Square Chandelier
The Playhouse Square Chandelier at the intersection of E. 14th and Euclid Ave. is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America with 4200 crystals. The Chandelier is generously presented by GE Lighting, a Savant company.
Basketball on the KeyBank State stage?
The stage of the KeyBank State Theatre is so large that a typical high school gymnasium (complete
with basketball court and bleachers) could easily fit on stage. As another point of comparison, three of the Mimi Ohio Theatre stages could fit onto the State’s stage.
The Mural Above the Fireplace
Above the fireplace at the rear of the KeyBank State Theatre auditorium, an original mural hangs despite its near-tragic loss. Removed from the wall in the early 1970s prior to the scheduled demolition of the venue, the mural eventually turned up in the basement of a piano store and was repurchased by Playhouse Square for $200.
The recovered mural was badly torn, having originally been painted on burlap then glued to the wall. The challenge of restoring the artwork fell to the Theater District’s Bonfoey Company. Artisans sanded the glue from the burlap and attached the cleaned mural to canvas via beeswax.
The next step was to clean and restore the work where needed. A stretcher for the canvas had to be custom-made. To eliminate tears and wrinkles, the stretcher was designed to expand and contract with the theater’s climactic changes and held together with springs (no nails or screws). It took Bonfoey employees 18 months to restore the painting at a cost of $8,500.
Although the creator of this mural is unknown, it is suspected to be Italian artist Sampitrotti, who had painted three murals for the original Mimi Ohio Theatre lobby. (Those murals were later destroyed in the Ohio’s 1964 lobby fire.)
World’s Longest Lobby Explained
In 1920 as the Loew’s chain anticipated building in the area that would come to be known as Playhouse Square, it was discovered there wasn’t sufficient room to build two theaters side by side in the available space. Since it was important that the proposed theater marquees be located on Euclid Avenue, an architectural plan was devised. Even though the KeyBank State Theatre would be completed and open 21 months before the Connor Palace, it was decided to build the KeyBank State behind the Connor Palace. This led to the construction of the KeyBank State’s 320-foot-long lobby, reported to be the longest theater lobby in the world. The Mimi Ohio Theatre would then be built on the other side of the KeyBank State, giving all three theaters the desired Euclid Avenue marquee frontage.
Re-Creating History
We call the completed Mimi Ohio Theatre George Gund Foundation Lobby project a “re-creation” rather than a restoration. Why? There was nothing left to restore after a 1964 fire destroyed the space. To reproduce the lobby’s original 1921 splendor, architects, restoration specialists and Playhouse Square staff conducted exhaustive research of the original drawings by architect Thomas Lamb, photo archives and a few remaining bits of ornamental plaster detail to gain a thorough understanding of the space and inform the plans for re-creating the lobby.
Broadway to Buildings
Where do the arts and real estate go hand-in-hand? At Playhouse Square, of course! As the theaters began to be restored in the early 1980s, it was thought that developers would step in to build and open businesses around them. When that didn’t happen, Playhouse Square began to steward development of the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, Playhouse Square became the first performing arts center with a real estate services division, which manages the more than 1.7 million square feet of property owned by the organization and
another 1.5 million square feet outside the theater district. Other performing arts centers have since looked to our expertise as a model.
YPs Take the Lead
Best known as the masterminds behind the annual Jump Back Ball benefit, Playhouse Square’s young professionals group — Partners — was formed in 1991. Since then, hundreds of young professionals engage with Playhouse Square each year to build leadership skills, raise funds and volunteer in support of our not-for-profit mission, enjoy shows together, network and have fun!
Keeping Up the KeyBank State Theatre
First restored more than 30 years ago, the KeyBank State Theatre was repainted from the street to the proscenium in 2015. The new, cohesive color palette showcases the beauty and craftsmanship of the nearly 100-year-old theater. It took 25 painters 12,500 hours and 595 gallons of paint in 15 different colors to complete the project, which also included 6000 sheets of new metal leafing in the auditorium dome and the application of a historically accurate wall-covering design. While the theater was dark, its lighting fixtures and restrooms received major upgrades.
What’s in a Logo?
The Playhouse Square logo we use today – a tilted burgundy square with a capital P in its center –was introduced in 2008 to capture the enduring spirit of entertainment and excitement. Each of the logo’s graphic elements has meaning: the exclamation point with a star in the “P” symbolizes excitement and innovation; the swirl in the “P” represents creativity and forward motion; the tilted square symbolizes Playhouse Square as a destination; and the burgundy color gives nod to the color scheme of our historic theaters.
Patterns in Plaster
As you walk through the theaters, you may notice various patterns within the plaster decoration. Common are dentil, lamb tongue, rope and rosettes. Other patterns you may see have been associated with certain meanings since they were first used hundreds or even thousands of years ago, such as the acanthus leaf (immortality), egg and dart (life and death), and the palm leaf, first used in ancient Egypt as a reference to the Nile River. In the
KeyBank State Theatre, if you look closely and carefully, you can find ox skulls, which were believed to offer protection from natural elements. And throughout the theaters, you will find griffins, mythical creatures thought of as guardians.
Building Cleveland
The original builder of the Allen and Hanna Theatres — John Gill & Sons Co. — also built Judson Manor (known then as Wade Park Manor), the Federal Reserve Bank and the Terminal Tower.
The Show That Saved Playhouse Square
After seeing a performance of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris at Cleveland State University, Ray Shepardson — the man who was the driving force behind the saving of Playhouse Square’s theaters — decided to stage the show in the KeyBank State Theatre lobby for three weeks. Clevelanders flocked to the performances and the show’s run extended to more than two years, proving that audiences would return to Playhouse Square and to downtown.

A League of Our Own
Playhouse Square is a member of The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry. Formed in 1930, members include theater owners and operators, producers, presenters, general managers and suppliers throughout North America.
Officially Historic
In 1978, Playhouse Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of U.S. historic sites worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.
What Were They Watching?
When Playhouse Square’s historic theaters first opened, popular forms of entertainment included vaudeville and silent films. A vaudeville show would feature a variety of acts including burlesque, comedy, and song and dance. Silent films were accompanied by live music, usually played on an organ, that would accentuate and punctuate the action on screen.
Roman Rotunda
The design for the Allen Theatre’s rotunda was inspired by the Villa Madama near Rome. Commissioned by Cardinal de’ Medici, the Villa was created by Raphael and Giovanni da Udine. The direct influence of the Villa Madama can be found in the rotunda’s paintings and color palette, as well as the original floor plan for the theater and lobby.
Seating Styles to Suit
The Hanna Theatre features seven different styles of seating, though none is ever more than 13 rows from the action. You can choose from traditional theater seating in the orchestra or balcony, club chairs, banquettes, bar stools, lounge seating and historic or balcony boxes.
A Curtain with History
It is has long been common practice for touring shows and performers to leave their mark backstage: some sign walls, some sign posters to be hung by theater staff and crew, and some attach t-shirts or posters, create drawings or sign onto the theater curtain itself. From its opening in 1921 through the 1980s, hundreds of such t-shirts, drawings and signatures accumulated on the Hanna Theatre curtain, now housed in the Special Collections Department of the Cleveland State University library.
