DEAR FRIENDS Welcome
Welcome and thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square! We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.
Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.
Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.
Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you. We look forward to welcoming you back to Playhouse Square again soon and invite you to see the incredible shows coming to our stages as part of the 2024-25 KeyBank Broadway Series.
With best wishes,
Craig Hassall AM President & CEO Brent Ballard Chair, Board of Trusteeselcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer.
As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.
For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve.
Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage and transformative philanthropy.
Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.
Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Michaela Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market PresidentSPOTLIGHT ON News

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Rediscover the magic of the holidays this season with ’Twas The Night Before... by Cirque du Soleil, a Huntington Featured Performance, December 4–15. For years, Isabella and her father have read ’Twas The Night Before Christmas together. But this year Isabella feels like she’s outgrown the family tradition. But then the magic of the poem comes to life, and Isabella and her father are unexpectedly separated by a snowstorm that sends them on a fantastical journey. In a winter wonderland inspired by the poem, they discover whimsical characters, acrobats, children and reindeer who reunite father and daughter in the holiday spirit. District
FUN IN THE SUN
Summer in Northeast Ohio means it’s time to get outside and enjoy the nice weather, and visitors to the Playhouse Square District can head to US Bank Plaza to enjoy special outdoor programming. On select afternoons from June through September, guests can grab their lunch from a PSQ District restaurant and enjoy live music as a part of Downtown Cleveland’s “PopUps on the Plaza” lunchtime series. PopUps on the Plaza are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon–1:30 p.m. Guests can also look forward to various food trucks stopping by US Bank Plaza during lunch hours every day of the week throughout the summer months.
BORDERLIGHT THEATRE FESTIVAL
New and exciting performances are taking over the PSQ District this July as the BorderLight Theatre Festival returns to the neighborhood. From July 24–27, guests can take in performances by established and emerging companies in theatre, circus, immersive experiences, street theatre, poetry, workshops, stand-up comedy, and more from artists in Cleveland and around the country. This year, BorderLight is set to welcome several acclaimed international touring companies featuring work of diverse regions and genres, alongside fringe artists, to stages throughout the PSQ District.

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene
The 2024-25 KeyBank Broadway Series was announced with great fanfare a few months ago. We are so excited to share A Beautiful Noise, Some Like It Hot, Life of Pi, Parade, & Juliet, Shucked and Kimberly Akimbo with you next season. As part of the live season announcement event, we went “Back in Time” to celebrate 40 years of Broadway at Playhouse Square. With banners in the lobby highlighting all the shows from previous seasons, audiences had the chance to reminisce about their favorite titles through the years. At today’s performance, we go back nearly as far as Broadway at Playhouse Square, and experience one of the most iconic 1980s’ films turned soaring Broadway musical. Back to the Future was a massive hit when it was originally released in movie theaters in 1985, and the trilogy has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. To keep the nostalgia completely intact, Bob Gale, co-creator and original co-screenwriter of the Back to the Future franchise, has adapted the film for the stage, and Robert Zemeckis remains creatively involved as a producer. The film’s original composer, Grammy and Oscar winner Alan Silvestri, teamed with music legend and Grammy winner Glen Ballard to deliver the songs we love from the film and original tunes — with sounds from pop to doo-wop — that will transport us back to the 1980s and 1950s.
With the story and music in the qualified hands of the original creators, the show needed a team capable of reinventing the most recognizable character from the film, the time-traveling DeLorean. We have seen cars or parts of cars on stage many times, but never has there been the challenge of recreating a pop-culture icon that needs to travel 88 MPH, spin, and fly — all within the confines of a 34-foot proscenium opening and 40 feet of stage depth.
Packed with gizmos and gadgets, smoke machines, lights, speakers and special effects, this DeLorean time-machine is from the creative genius of Tim Hatley, who is also responsible for the scenic and costume designs. In collaboration with Tim Lutkin (Lighting), Finn Ross (Video) and Chris Fisher (Illusion), it took a gigawatt of experimentation to bring the movie magic to life onstage. Much like eccentric inventor Doc Brown confesses many of his creations don’t work at first, “failure before success” is a common theme throughout this story and the physical creation of this musical. Thanks to the ambition to succeed in the face of adversity, we are treated to exhilarating feats of theatrical effects.
I’m “OUTATIME!”
Enjoy the ride,
David Greene Senior VP of ProgrammingKEYBANK STATE
