DEAR FRIENDS Welcome
Welcome and thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square! We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.
Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.
Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.
Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the world on stage before you. We look forward to seeing you at Playhouse Square again soon and invite you to consider planning your next visit to see Back to the Future and MJ the Musical.
With best wishes,
Craig Hassall AM President & CEO
Brent Ballard Chair, Board of Trustees
WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square
Welcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer.
As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.
For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve.
Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage and transformative philanthropy.
Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.
Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Michaela Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market President

SPOTLIGHT ON The District
PUBLIC TOURS RETURN
Free public tours of Playhouse Square’s performances spaces are once again available for visitors. Guests will be able to learn about the 100+-year history of the theater district with our RedCoat volunteers as their guides on select Saturday mornings. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and registration is required. Tours of each theater, as well as backstage access, will depend on availability. For additional details or to register for an upcoming tour, please visit playhousesquare.org/tours.
PARDON OUR DUST! PSQ DISTRICT IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY
Guests to the PSQ District might notice additional construction as renovations to the Bulkley apartments, as well as restoration to the Bulkley building façade are in full swing. Theater-goers can still enjoy their favorite pre-show dinner and drink spots as Parnell’s Irish Pub, Republic Food + Drink, The Fruit Stand and Sushi En remain open during this construction time period. Don’t forget to follow our @PSQDistrict accounts on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) for the latest updates on what is happening at our restaurants and throughout the district during the year.
PLAYHOUSE SQUARE’S FIRST AFFILIATE COMPANY
Playhouse Square has announced Karamu House as its first “affiliate company,” a designation for established, professional Northeast Ohio arts organizations that are significant to our cultural life and have a relationship with Playhouse Square. Karamu House is the oldest Black producing theater in the nation and is located in the Historic Fairfax District. The goal of the affiliate company designation is to introduce Playhouse Square audiences who may not be familiar with Karamu House to their work, and in turn, to introduce their audiences who may not have been here before to Playhouse Square.

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene
It’s been almost 55 years since Company originally premiered on Broadway. One of the first concept musicals — and perhaps the one that broke the most ground for the genre — Company is a series of scenes that share the themes of vulnerability, relationships and marriage without the structure of a linear story. With music and lyrics by Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, the 1970 premiere earned 14 Tony Award nominations, a record at the time, winning six coveted awards including Best Musical.
The original version of Company focused on Bobby, a soon-to-be-35-yearold man grappling with the choice of settling down in marriage like many of his friends, or continuing a life of bachelorhood which seemed to be suiting him well. For a 21st-century audience, the idea of a man considering peer and societal pressures regarding his relationships did not seem relevant to this revival’s director Marianne Elliott and producer Chris Harper.
For Elliott especially, to take on the seminal work of Sondheim and Furth, she felt the protagonist Bobby needed a new gender — a female Bobbie who is reaching that threshold when family, friends and society might question what she is doing with her life. She also wanted to change Amy — a woman on the brink of a nervous breakdown on the night before her wedding — to Jamie, a man experiencing that same feeling of cold feet before his wedding to fiancé, Paul.
She knew it would be a tough proposition to convince Sondheim to bless her aspiration to reverse the gender of characters Bobby and Amy to Bobbie and Jamie. Previous attempts by others failed to meet his endorsement, but Sondheim was a full admirer of Elliott, and he gave her the chance to recreate the work to give audiences a new way to experience the dialogue and relate to the lyrics without distorting the original material. You may also be an admirer of Elliott if you have seen her directorial work with War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, both previous favorites of the KeyBank Broadway Series at Playhouse Square.
Sondheim’s bet on Elliott and her collaborators turned out to be a winner … winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (Marianne Elliott), and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Bunny Christie).
As fate would have it, I was scheduled to meet Marianne and Chris for a cocktail in New York on the day their Tony Award nominations were announced. They were delighted by the recognition and shared the inspiring details of the journey they took with Sondheim to create this revival of Company.
And now, I am happy to share this groundbreaking musical with you.
Enjoy,
David Greene Senior VP of Programming
