DEAR FRIENDS
N
Amy Brady
early two years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar was on stage at Playhouse Square just as COVID-19 concerns began to take hold. On the day of what would have been the show’s third performance, Ohio enacted a ban on gatherings of more than 100 people, and performing arts venues across the country and the world were beginning to close. Today, it is a joy to welcome Jesus Christ Superstar back to Playhouse Square and to see all of you — many of whom held onto your tickets in anticipation of the show’s return — here in the theater for this long-awaited performance. While Playhouse Square and the performing arts industry continue to face a long road to full recovery, we are proud to have been welcoming audiences back to our theaters successfully since June 2021. We are grateful to all of you for following our health and safety guidelines so the shows can go on. Six of our seven resident companies (Cleveland Ballet, Cleveland Play House, Cleveland State University Department of Theatre and Dance, DANCECleveland, Great Lakes Theater and Tri-C Performing Arts) have returned to the stage. Next month, the Cleveland International Film Festival will make its in-person debut as our seventh resident company, and we can hardly wait! What happens on stage is at the core of what we do, but we remain focused on the other areas of our not-for-profit mission as well. Our district is beginning to thrive again with almost every restaurant now reopened, and The Lumen apartments are nearly 90% leased. Our Education Department is preparing to welcome student field trips back to in-person matinee performances for the first time in two years, while continuing to offer virtual field trips that enable students who could not otherwise come to Playhouse Square to experience the performing arts. The work we do is made possible by those who support our not-for-profit mission. As we continue our recovery, contributions are more important than ever. Please consider becoming a Playhouse Square donor or marketing partner to help one of Cleveland’s most important cultural institutions thrive.
Sincerely,
Amy Brady Chair, Board of Trustees

As a longtime supporter of the Broadway Series, all of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer. KeyBank is proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares our mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio as part of our National Community Benefits Plan, which supports low to moderate income individuals and communities through community development lending for affordable housing, small business lending, mortgage lending and transformative philanthropy. Recently, we fulfilled our aggregate, $16.5 billion goal ahead of schedule and increased our national commitment to $40 billion dollars. Our investments will continue focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed. BRODERICK, PARKER HEADLINE NEIL SIMON CLASSIC Real-life married couple Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker will return to Broadway together next month in a new version of Neil Simon’s classic comedy Plaza Suite. WANT MORE BROADWAY IN CLE?
PLAYHOUSE SQUARE’S ORIGINAL NAME By January 1921, the elegant Euclid Avenue mansions between E. 14th & E. 17th had been demolished in a frenzy to build five entertainment “palaces.” All five would premiere between Feb. 14, 1921, and Nov. 6, 1922, creating a new downtown theater “district.” A civic organization (Euclid Avenue Association) decided to christen this new district “Euclid Square.” But when an editorial in one of Cleveland’s daily papers referred to it as “Playhouse Square,” the public chose to adopt it instead... much to the dismay of the EAA who called “Playhouse Square” a “frivolous” name.

he Playhouse Square District is the perfect place to grab a bite before the show. If you’re looking for something plant-based, check out a few of our favorite vegan and vegetarian options below. Sung’s House is a must for plant-based eating in the District. For sushi lovers, you can try the veggie roll and enjoy it with some vegan starters including: edamame, house salad, wakame and cucumber salad, or try the tofu teriyaki and yaki udon. Hofbräuhaus Cleveland is the perfect place to indulge in traditional German fare with a vegan twist. They have vegan bratwurst made with vegetable proteins, and vegan pierogi. Enjoy the giant freshly baked pretzels (which are also vegan!), grab a liter, dance on the tables and immerse yourself in German traditions. In need of a sweet treat before the show? Corbo’s Bakery offers different vegan options that are sure to satisfy that craving including limoncello gelato, lemon ice by the quart, vegan lattes and cappuccinos.

MAKING MEMORIES, INSPIRING PERFORMANCE NOT ALL PLAYHOUSE SQUARE “STARS” ARE ON STAGE! The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.

SPOTLIGHT ON Partners
PARTNERS THEATER WORKSHOP
I
n the fall of 2021, Partners members met with Playhouse Square’s teaching artists and got first-hand experience at what it’s like to participate in the Disney Musicals in Schools program. They enjoyed acting warm ups and exercises and even partook in the typical audition process. This workshop really helped Partners members gain a better understanding of what the faculty and students experience.
I
n December 2021, Partners members celebrated the holidays with a pre-show reception, complete with a hot cocoa and apple cider bar and indulgent desserts. Afterwards, many headed to the theaters to attend A Christmas Carol and Wicked.

n the early 1970s when there were few reasons to come to the unrenovated theaters at Playhouse Square, thankfully, there was rock ’n’ roll. This was the time where environmental aesthetics were forsaken in favor of being in the aortic-vibrating presence of your musical idols. In those years, the countercultural rock experience — aka the British Invasion — was sweeping across America and Cleveland faster than you could say My Sweet Lord. However, it was influences from Midwesterners such as Bob Dylan and Belkin Productions that brought vision to the launch of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. First, let’s step back across the pond to London, England, to the beginnings of this now iconic creation. Their first collaboration, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, brought a bit of notoriety to the 20-something duo Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Soon, they began noodling on their next musical creation. King Richard and the Crusaders? King Saul? Finally, the Dean of London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral suggested they tell the story of the final days of the life of Jesus Christ. And so they did, perhaps with slightly more verve than this man-of-the-cloth had envisioned. The notion of telling this story of betrayal and execution through the eyes of Judas Iscariot was inspired by the 1964 Bob Dylan song “With God on Our Side.” The lyric of the song postures the double-cross of Judas’ kiss as Dylan ponders: You’ll have to decide ... Whether Judas Iscariot ... Had God on his side. Judas, from whose perspective Superstar is told, is a wounded spirit and a misfit. As a follower, he seems to love the doctrine that Christ espouses and simultaneously he is in doubt. For me, this is a bit reminiscent of Aaron Burr’s character in the musical Hamilton. In that piercing moment when he murders Hamilton, is he wishing death on his opponent or acting in a moment of self-preservation? As Judas offers the deadly kiss to Jesus, his destiny as a universally scorned antagonist is catapulted into the ages. Webber and Rice’s contemporary retelling of this ultimate betrayal turned into an unexpected journey, as the established theatrical kingpins of London’s West End told them, “this is the worst idea in history.” Desperate for a path with their new piece, the tenacious twosome turned to the music industry and the label that had released The Who’s rock opera Tommy. Ultimately, in September 1970, they struck a deal, releasing the double “brown” album and its 28-page libretto. The album topped the Billboard charts in 1971, landing the No. 1 slot at year-end and edging out Tapestry, Carole King’s gargantuan triumph. Although there was a passionate appeal for Superstar, the music sparked an outcry from traditional institutions. Initially, the “blasphemous” LP was banned by the BBC, perhaps better suited for the turntables south of Purgatory. Christians and Jews alike scoffed at it. However, small, unauthorized productions began popping up in schools and churches. In an attempt to protect the rights and garner the growing enthusiasm for the piece, a London record producer decided to stage Superstar as a U.S. arena tour, playing Cleveland’s Public Auditorium in July 1971 during the initial month of this groundbreaking incarnation. That engagement and many dates throughout the Midwest were promoted by the legendary impresarios Jules and Mike Belkin of Belkin Productions. The Midwest is again making its mark with the 50-year celebration of the album. At Playhouse Square, we are adding 22 local string players, bringing the total number of musicians to 33. The arrangements were created especially for our engagement by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, the Really Useful Group. This grand musical presentation is only scheduled to occur at Playhouse Square. After experiencing Superstar in the spirit of its original youthful vigor, you may find yourself really changed.
Enjoy,

n honor of the 50th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s groundbreaking rock opera, Playhouse Square and Work Light Productions present the national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar in live theatrical surround sound exclusively for Cleveland audiences. An additional 22 Northeast Ohio strings players will combine with the 11-piece ensemble of touring musicians to create an epic 33-piece orchestra fit for the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. Playhouse Square’s long-time friend and local musician contractor, Don Santa-Emma, passed away earlier this year. Don was integral in curating the local orchestras for many of the performances seen on our stages, including this production of Jesus Christ Superstar. We can only imagine the heavenly lineup of musicians Don is now conducting.

the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes of Us. Their next three works together were much more successful – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess) and Stuart Brayson (From Here to Eternity). ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Music) has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968) to Cinderella (2021) his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the covid pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, Cats and Phantom of the Opera he equalled Rodgers and Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and
renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete re-modelling and re-seating of the Gillian Lynne. Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018.
