Hanna Theatre @ Playhouse Square
Welcome and thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square! We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.
Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.
Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.
Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you. We look forward to welcoming you back to Playhouse Square again soon and invite you to consider planning your next visit to see ’Twas the Night Before…, Life of Pi, or Parade
With best wishes,

Karamu House Sponsors
Karamu House is excited to return to Playhouse Square in the Hanna Theatre to present Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity. As the first Affiliate company of Playhouse Square, we relish the opportunity to showcase local talent, provide employment opportunities, and present holiday entertainment for all ages.
The first act retells the Nativity Story, the birth of Christ, with African diasporic themes, drawing on the rich and varied ethnicities that continue to influence culture around the world. We draw on the wisdom of the past, as we navigate the present and envision possible futures. There are new musical arrangements by Dr. David M. Thomas, drawing on musical styles throughout the diaspora and across time. The color palettes in the lighting, set, and costume designs reflect the rich tones of Western regions of the Motherland. The choreography, created by Co-Director Errin Weaver, draws from different African cultures. Act II displays a rich musical landscape with complex harmonic arrangements that remind us of the boy and girl groups of yesteryear, which were shaped by the gospel music inspired by Christ’s birth.
Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity has become a Karamu Holiday tradition. Returning to Playhouse Square for the holidays reunites us with more of the Cleveland audience and aligns with our mission to create for all audiences while honoring the Black experience. We are thrilled that you have gathered with us this holiday season, enjoy the show!
Tony F. Sias, President and CEO, Karamu House
Over its 109-year history, Karamu has educated and cultivated generations of aspiring youth in all professions. It has developed a national reputation for nurturing Black actors, artists and dancers. Among the notable performers who refined their crafts at Karamu and later found success in their fields were visual artists Charles Sallee and Elmer Brown, literary giant Langston Hughes, stage and film actors Robert Guillaume, Bill Cobbs, Ron O’Neal, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Richard Brooks, James Pickens Jr., and Imani
Hakim to name a few. The great Ruby Dee has also been associated with Karamu House.
Today, Karamu is being reborn as a beating heart for the entire community, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identification, or age, and retains its historical identity as “a place of joyful gathering.” Core programs include a five-performance, socially-relevant and professional quality, theatre season; arts education in drama, music and dance for all ages; and community programming, such as a lecture series, and spoken word and music performances, that invite participation, engagement, reflection, and a re-commitment to cultural values. Karamu House also enjoys national prominence, being recognized as the Oldest Black Producing Theatre in the nation and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

LANGSTON HUGHES (Playwright) Famed poet and playwright, Langston Hughes was commissioned by Russel and Rowena Jelliffe in 1961 to create a gospel drama to be staged that Christmas. In November of that year, Langston began a gospel play based on the theme of the Nativity. One idea above all guided him; he would attempt to make black gospel music the heart and soul of the drama, and not merely its adornment. Langston went directly to major sources of gospel music in Harlem in search of inspiration for lyrics and music. Haunting the store-front churches and temples, he slipped in among the faithful while the services were in full swing and the melodic and religious fervor rose to its zenith. Then he hurried back to his desk to revise and revamp his text. His hard work brought results. On December 6, he sent his drama agent the script of Wasn’t That a Mighty Day? later called Black Nativity. Black Nativity marked a major breakthrough in the gospel music form. As with his evolving mastery of the blues in the 1920s, Hughes now deliberately allowed black music and religion to overwhelm the traditional play form. The musical opened December 11, 1961, on Broadway. The response was extraordinary. The audience could hardly be restrained nor could the performers. Unanimously the critics hailed Black Nativity as a major entertainment. To The Mirror, the show offered “an exciting blend of text, dance, spirituals and hymns,” and The Post marveled at its “spirit, zest and uninhabited joy.” – Arnold Rampersad excerpt from the Life of Langston Hughes, Volume II: 1941-1967 I Dream A World.
