2022-2023
DEAR FRIENDS Welcome
Welcome to Playhouse Square! Whether this is your first visit or you have been here many times, thank you for choosing to see live theater in one of our beautiful venues today. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your experience as memorable and enjoyable as possible.
There is nothing quite like nestling into a theater seat as performers bring a story to life on the stage right before us. Consider planning your next visit to see Come From Away or SIX. And be sure to check out the shows headed to Cleveland as part of our 2023-24
We hope you have a wonderful time and look forward to seeing you at Playhouse Square again soon.
Sincerely,
Craig Hassall AM President & CEO Amy Brady Chair, Board of TrusteesWE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square
Welcome to Playhouse Square! As a longtime supporter of the Broadway Series, all of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer.
As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.
Since 2017, KeyBank has made investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio as part of our National Community Benefits Plan, which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage and transformative philanthropy.
Recently, we fulfilled our aggregate $16.5 billion goal ahead of schedule and increased our national commitment to $40 billion dollars. Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.
Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Kelly Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market PresidentSPOTLIGHT ON News
2023-2024 BROADWAY SERIES ANNOUNCED
In our TINA: The Tina Turner Musical program, we took a closer look at the first three shows coming to The Land next season. (If you missed it, visit playhousesquare.org/programs.) Now, let’s dive into the next four. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube for even more content about #BWYCLE.
HELLO, GORGEOUS! The dream of a life on stage comes true in Funny Girl as the musical with one of the greatest scores of all time claims the spotlight in February/March 2024. The original Broadway cast was led by Barbra Streisand in the role of Fanny Brice; she won an Oscar for her performance in the 1968 film version. This bittersweet comedy features the classic gems “People,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” — Photo by Evan Zimmerman for MurphyMade.
Spring (April/May) brings us SONDHEIM’S GROUND BREAKING MUSICAL COMEDY COMPANY. The original 1970 production earned a stag gering 14 Tony nomina tions, winning six. This revival, helmed by Director Marianne Elliot (War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Angels in America), won five, includ ing Best Musical Revival.
THE SPEEDOMETER WILL READ 88MPH when Back to the Future: The Musical opens its national tour right here in June 2024. Based on the classic 1985 film, this production won the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Longtime collaborators Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, who brought us the Back to the Future film trilogy, lead the show’s creative team with the films’ composer Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award winner Glen Ballard giving us the music and lyrics.
Centered around the making of the 1992 DANGEROUS WORLD TOUR, the multi-Tony Awardwinning musical MJ will heat up summer 2024 with more than 25 of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits and signature moves. Created by Tony Awardwinning Director/Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, MJ offers a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status.

SPOTLIGHT ON The District
FUN IN THE SUN
Throughout the summer months, visitors to the Playhouse Square District can enjoy different activities at U.S. Bank Plaza. During select afternoons, live music and games will be available as a part of Downtown Cleveland Alliance’s “PopUps in the Plaza” lunchtime series. On two summer Fridays, U.S. Bank Plaza will be a stop for “First Friday Hop.” These events will each feature a theme with live performances, curated market vendors, a food truck and beverages available for purchase at three different locations across downtown — plus a free trolley taking you to the venues.
• Pop-Ups in the Plaza: Tuesdays, June 6-Sept. 26, noon-1:30 p.m.
• First Friday Hop: Fridays, July 7 and August 4, 6-9 p.m.
DINING ALFRESCO
Patios have returned to the PSQ District, and guests can take in every moment of the gorgeous summer weather as they have a meal or drink before a show. From the biergarten of Hofbräuhaus Cleveland to the patio of Parnell’s Irish Pub with its picture-perfect views of the GE Chandelier, there are plenty of options for an evening out on the town.
BLOSSOMING NEW BUSINESS
Summer is in full bloom, and whether you are looking to spruce up a special event or brighten someone’s day with a thoughtful gift, PSQ District’s newest business — The Flower Petal — is here to help. SPOTLIGHT
ON Thank You Donors!
Playhouse Square had the chance to celebrate and thank donors at one of three special evenings in April. These donor appreciation events were hosted in the KeyBank State Theatre and featured an update on Playhouse Square from President and CEO Craig Hassall AM and Director of Education Treva Offutt. This was followed by an exclusive showing of the movie Moulin Rouge.

GIVING BACK to Playhouse Square
Playhouse Square is a community-based not-for-profit organization which depends upon philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. More than $7 million dollars must be raised annually to help Playhouse Square meet its mission of operating and maintaining the historic theaters, expanding arts education outreach, and investing in the community through area development. The following are charitable opportunities which support Playhouse Square:
Donor Circle
Donor Circle is a program for individuals who give an annual gift of $600 or more. Donor Circle members receive advance access to tickets, prime seating for Broadway and other performances, and a personal ticket concierge. At select giving levels, members have access to the private RJF Presidents’ Club for dinner and bar service, plus reserved, first-floor parking in the Playhouse Square garage. Companies can also contribute via the Corporate Donor Circle program and receive community recognition, client entertainment and employee rewards. Contact: Mary Winchester, 216-640-8412
Foundation Support
Corporate, community and family foundations and government agencies like the Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga County Arts and Culture provide Playhouse Square with annual operating support and funding for education programs. Contact: Cheryl Helden, 216-640-8406
Friends Circle
Friends Circle is a program for individuals who give an annual gift of $50 to $599. Members receive advance access to tickets, discounts, special recognition and invitations to private events throughout the year. Contact: Victoria Gray, 216-640-8417
Partners
Partners is the official young professionals group of Playhouse Square. Members enjoy unique opportunities to network, volunteer, socialize and fine-tune their leadership skills. Young professionals (ages 21-40) can join Partners for as little as $50 per year. Contact: Sarah Stengel, 216-640-8408
Leading Ladies
In the spirit of fun and celebration, Leading Ladies is designed to engage women by providing the opportunity to connect with each other through a shared passion for Playhouse Square and its notfor-profit mission. Members are invited to four exclusive events throughout the year, such as pre-show cocktail receptions, special guest speaker luncheons, and behind-the-scenes experiences. An annual membership is $250. Contact: Leanne Dewyer, 216-640-8411
Endowment and Planned Giving
Share your love for Playhouse Square when you plan for the future. Individuals and families that have declared their intention to include Playhouse Square in their estate plans, whether by will, trust or life income arrangement, are recognized through Legacy Circle. PROGRAM NOTE David Greene
Moulin Rouge (French) translates to “Red Mill.” A windmill loves a good strong wind. The stronger the wind, the more power it can generate. The creative team behind Moulin Rouge! The Musical used every gust of wind it could harness and turned it into positive energy to create a celebration of “Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love.”
The result of the process, while hugely successful, was not short of challenges. Imagine creating a musical that features 120 years of popular music — including more than 70 songs written by 160 composers whose rights belong to 30 publishers. An international team of producers spent more than 10 years acquiring the rights for the movie, and then carefully negotiated for chart-topper after chart-topper to be woven into this unique storytelling. Not all original song choices were met with a “yes” from the composer or publisher, so each “no” sent the creative team back to the music catalogs to find another song that would not disrupt the direction or coherence of the show.
Ultimately, each obstacle drew the team closer together and provided an opportunity for an even stronger and more creative solution.
Theater is one of the world’s most collaborative art forms. The creation of Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a sparkling example of collaboration at its most “spectacular, spectacular.” The next challenge was the quest to find the perfect creative team to collaborate in taking this musical from concept to the Broadway stage. Perfection is what they found as nearly every lead member of the direction and design team took home a coveted Tony Award for the work you will see today.
Along with Best Musical and a pair of Best Performance awards, the creative team hoisted Tony Awards for Direction, Choreography, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Sound Design and Orchestrations on Broadway’s biggest night.
Prior to the pandemic, I had a chance to talk costumes and take a tour of the Broadway set of Moulin Rouge! The Musical with two of theater’s most sought-after designers, Catherine Zuber and Derek McLane. For costume designer Catherine Zuber, it was an easy decision to become involved in this feast-forthe-senses production. Her biggest challenge was to create a design that could simultaneously occur in the present, based on the contemporary music choices, and occur in the late 19th century, the time period when the story takes place. The lightning-fast quick changes onstage and backstage coupled with Sonya Tayeh’s high intensity and perpetual motion choreography also posed a challenge as the costumes had to be designed so as not to restrict the performers’ movement.
“The challenge,” Zuber told me, “is that the costumes look attractive and look authentic, but the artists must be able to move freely and remove their clothes within one second. “
When set designer Derek McLane was asked by director Alex Timbers if he was interested in designing for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, he said, “Yes, yes, yes.” He is an expert in 19th-century design and was drawn to the Bohemian and chic nature of this period in Paris. There are nine different types of red fabric on the set, each with its own hue and pattern. The patterns overlap and are filled with delicacy and detail that make them feel both period and contemporary. Working with lighting designer Justin Townsend, McLane tried to figure out how to cram as many lightbulbs as possible into the set so, like the other design elements, every inch of the stage could sparkle and be animated. In fact, there were a few pieces of scenery in the original design that didn’t light up, but McLane said, “They felt lonely, so by the time the show made it to New York, they also lit up.”
I hope you light up at the spectacle within this story, the music and the visual feast you are about to consume.

A Brief History
The Moulin Rouge club you will see in the theatre tonight is a work of theatrical imagination in the spirit of the Moulin Rouge of Paris. Here’s a brief history of that emblematic venue.
▪ October 6, 1889: The Moulin Rouge opens at the foot of the Montmartre hill. The aim of its founders, Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, is to allow the very rich to come and slum it in a fashionable district, where people live differently from other parts of Paris. The place attracts men and women, the middle classes and rich foreigners passing through Paris, as well as artists and ordinary folk. The French cancan, a new dance inspired by the quadrille, enchanted the spectators. Nicknamed “The First Palace of Women” by Oller and Zidler, the cabaret quickly becomes a great success.
▪ The first revue, Circassiens et Circassiennes, is launched in April 1890. Toulouse-Lautrec creates the posters for the Moulin Rouge from 1891, the first being La Goulue.
▪ July 29, 1907: First appearance of Mistinguett at the Moulin Rouge in the Revue de la Femme
▪ After the First World War, Francis Salabert takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. The venue experiences a new popularity thanks to Jacques-Charles and Mistinguett. As the artistic director of the Moulin Rouge, Mistinguett sets a new standard for spectacular revue shows that will inspire Las Vegas venues for nearly a century. American revues, including the Hoffmann Girls, are put on for the first time in Paris.
▪ In the 1930s, the ballroom is transformed into the most ultra-modern nightclub of the time. The Moulin Rouge welcomes the Cotton Club in 1937.
▪ June 22, 1951: Georges France, called Jo France, acquires the Moulin Rouge and starts major renovation work. The birthplace of the French cancan now hosts major international artists.
▪ 1955: Jo France transfers the Moulin Rouge to the brothers Joseph and Louis Clérico. The famous French cancan is still performed, soon choreographed by Ruggero Angeletti and danced by the Doriss Girls.
▪ 1962: Jacki Clérico, son of Joseph Clérico, takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. It is the start of a new era: enlargement of the auditorium, installation of a giant aquarium and the first aquatic ballet. Frou Frou of 1963 and its ensuing success marked the beginning of the series of shows beginning with an “F,” their lucky letter, including ten shows up to the latest revue.
▪ In 2019, the Moulin Rouge and its 60 artists celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Féerie revue show: two hours of amazement featuring cabaret and music hall styles, dance scenes and surprise acts, without forgetting the Moulin Rouge’s most emblematic dance, the French cancan.
▪ October 2019: The Moulin Rouge, famous around the world, celebrates its 130th anniversary.
The authentic Moulin Rouge of Paris invites you to enter its dazzling and spectacular world. Visit us at the home and birthplace of the Parisian way of celebrating since 1889!
