DEAR FRIENDS Welcome
Welcome and thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square! We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.
Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.
Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.
Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you. We look forward to welcoming you back to Playhouse Square again soon and invite you to consider planning your next visit to see ’Twas the Night Before…, Life of Pi, or Parade
With best wishes,
Craig Hassall AM President & CEO
Brent Ballard Chair, Board of Trustees

WE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square
Welcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying one of the best live theater experiences our country has to offer — and it’s right here in Key’s hometown of Cleveland. Our beloved Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award-winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. As in years past, the team here at Playhouse has worked very hard to bring you a spectacular lineup of shows, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store this year.
For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve.
Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $2 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgages and transformative philanthropy.
Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.
Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Michaela Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market President
SPOTLIGHT ON News
SHAKER HEIGHTS NATIVE TO LEAD NATIONAL TOUR OF PARADE
Northeast Ohio’s own Max Chernin, a member of the Parade cast for its award-winning runs both on Broadway and at New York City Center, has been cast in the role of Leo Frank in the upcoming national tour. Chernin’s credits also include Sunday in the Park with George and Bright Star on Broadway, as well as featured roles in the Apple TV+ comedy Dickinson and the Netflix/Happy Madison comedy feature film The Week Of. The role of Lucille Frank will be played by Talia Suskauer, who some may remember as Elphaba in Wicked during its winter 2021 stop at Playhouse Square. Additional casting for Parade will be announced at a later date. Parade will officially launch its national tour in Minneapolis in January 2025 and will come to Playhouse Square as part of the KeyBank Broadway Series February 4–23. Tickets are now on sale at playhousesquare.org or 216-2416000.
ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES GET AN UPGRADE
We have recently upgraded and increased the number of available assisted listening devices throughout our theaters. The new devices are more reliable and have T-coil (telecoil) capabilities. We hope this investment will enable our guests who find this assistance useful to have a more fully enjoyable experience at Playhouse Square. To request an assisted listening device, visit the House Manager’s office — any RedCoat volunteer can direct you. Please bring your photo ID with you.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
The date for the 78th annual Tony Awards is set! On Sunday, June 8, 2025, the best of Broadway will gather at Radio City Music Hall to celebrate the achievements of the most recent season. The awards show will be broadcast live to both coasts (8-11 p.m. ET / 5-8 p.m. PT) on CBS and available via streaming on Paramount+. The Tony Awards is presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
STARS LIGHT UP THE GREAT WHITE WAY
It seems like several film and TV stars are trading the big screen for smaller stages, as hot names from Hollywood are heating up Broadway marquees this fall. Just some of the names include Mia Farrow (The Roommate), Jim Parsons and Katie Holmes (Our Town), Robert Downey Jr (McNeal), Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher (Left on Tenth), Daniel Dae Kim (Yellow Face), Nicole Scherzinger (Sunset Blvd) and Michelle Williams (Death Becomes Her). And that’s just through the end of 2024! Keep an eye out for new projects next spring involving George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Nick Jonas, David Hyde Pierce and more.

SPOTLIGHT ON The District
VISIT THE BRASSERIE AND THE BULKLEY BAR
Guests can now grab a bite to eat from The Brasserie and enjoy a drink at The Bulkley Bar. Both venues are located inside the Bulkley Building at 1501 Euclid Ave. Guests can learn more about these new additions to the Playhouse Square District by following the @PSQDistrict accounts on Instagram and X or by going to playhousesquare.org/dining.
NOW OPEN
A new restaurant has been added to the dining options in the Playhouse Square District. Gochujang recently opened its doors for business and offers a menu featuring Korean street food. The restaurant is located at 1350 Euclid Ave. (the corner of E14th St. and Euclid Ave.), and is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.
COMING SOON
This winter, The Friars’ Table will be joining the Playhouse Square District. The new venture is a collaboration between Brandon Chrostowski, the visionary behind EDWINS, and Cleveland Capuchin Ministries, led in this endeavor by Fr. Philip Bernier, OFM Cap. Located at 1305 Euclid Avenue, The Friars’ Table will feature a seasonal menu inspired by monastic cuisine, thoughtfully crafted by Chef Chrostowski, who studied this culinary tradition in Europe. The menu will blend monastic tradition with modern innovation, emphasizing wholesome, nourishing ingredients.
SPOTLIGHT ON Donors
DONOR CIRCLE NEW MEMBER TOUR
In September, new Donor Circle members attended a reception and theater tour in appreciation of their first annual donation. Donors had the opportunity to meet members of the Development staff and learn about the latest program and district updates from President & CEO, Craig Hassall AM. Donors ended the evening with a private behind-the-scenes tour of the theaters.
Playhouse Square relies on the support of annual donors to help enrich our community through the performing arts. If you are interested in supporting our not-for-profit mission, visit playhousesquare.org/giving.

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene
Welcome to the second show of the 2024-25 KeyBank Broadway Series! Thank you to all who have come along on the journey as a season ticket holder for this 40th year of Broadway at Playhouse Square. If you have not yet committed to be part of the largest season ticket community in North America, there is still time to guarantee your seats for the rest of the season, at the lowest prices, with the greatest flexibility available. As the holidays are quickly approaching, consider a gift of live, shared experiences that will continue to give for months to come.
Ranked No. 1 on the American Film Institute’s list of “The 100 Funniest American Movies of All Time,” Some Like It Hot was not only a cleverly written and highly entertaining film, it pushed the boundaries of strict moral guidelines that governed the motion picture industry from the mid-1930s until the mid-1960s. Released in 1959 without approval from the Motion Picture Production Code, Some Like It Hot was a critical and commercial hit that was nominated for six Academy Awards. The success of the film and boldness of the creators would help lead to the fall of the conservative code, establish a new movie rating system and allow for more creative freedoms for the entire film industry.
The ability to exercise creative freedom has been a driving force behind the thriving career of Some Like It Hot’s (the musical) director and choreographer, Casey Nicholaw. His willingness to express bold ideas, ability to bring comedy and heart equally to the stage, and the way he can blend traditional Broadway elements with fresh, contemporary style make him one of the most sought-after creative Broadway leaders in the industry.
Nicholaw is no stranger to making the transfer from screen to stage (Mean Girls, Aladdin, Elf, The Prom and others). Experiencing a classic film as a new Broadway musical is an exciting way to revisit an adored story.
This script, adapted from the original by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin, gives characters more depth, deepens the context of relationships and contemporizes the themes.
This lively, jazz-inspired score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman — influenced by legends Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford and Louis Jordan — sets the scene for this 1930s era story. The music also gives Nicholaw the necessary material to entertain with toe-tapping and exhilarating Tony Awardwinning choreography.
The costume design, which earned Gregg Barnes a Tony Award, draws inspiration from daily life during the Depression, the glitz and glamour of jazz clubs and speakeasies, and the illustrious fashion from the Harlem Renaissance. The designs are as visually stunning for the audience as they are practical for the actors to be able to move through Nicholaw’s demanding dance moves.
All of these elements and more merge into a joyous new musical with a classic vibe.
Enjoy,
David Greene Senior VP of Programming
