CHINA BEFORE COMMUNISM “A Must See!” —Broadway World Presented by Ohio Falun Dafa Association ShenYun.com 216.241.6000 January 27-28 ALL-NEW PROGRAM • WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA
Welcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer.
As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.
For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve.
Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage and transformative philanthropy.
Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.
Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Michaela Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market President

SPOTLIGHT ON President’s Dinner
Playhouse Square presented the Falco Award to Kathy and Jim Pender on August 28 at the President’s Dinner, on the stage of the KeyBank State Theatre.
Longtime supporters Kathy and Jim Pender had their first date at Playhouse Square and have been involved with the organization since the theaters were saved from the wrecking ball in the 1970s. Jim served as a Trustee for many years while Kathy was a member of the Education Committee. They honor the memory of their son Michael, who loved theater, music and working with children, by giving to Playhouse Square’s education programs.
In recognition of the Penders’ generous support of arts education, 2023 Dazzle Awards Best Actor winner Savon Harris made a guest appearance, singing “Let It Sing” from Violet
The Falco Award, named for former Playhouse Square President & CEO Art Falco, honors an individual, foundation or organization in Northeast Ohio whose leadership, perseverance and dedication has contributed to the success of Playhouse Square.

PROGRAM NOTE David Greene
Of the hundreds of Broadway shows I have seen live in a theater, The Wiz is not among them. Most shows we bring to you as part of the KeyBank Broadway Series are coming directly from a currently running or recently closed engagement on Broadway. This all-new production just kicked off during the last week of September, and will “ease on down” a limited number of roads across the country before opening once again on Broadway. When given the option to be among the first in the country to present a show that is bound for Broadway, has a savvy veteran producing team with a proven track record, and has one of the most exciting creative teams assembled today, we leapt at the opportunity.
The original pre-Broadway production launched in 1974 at the Morris Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore. While the debut occurred a short 30 miles from my childhood home, it was only a few months after I was born. Following engagements in Detroit and Philadelphia, The Wiz broke ground as a major musical with an all-Black cast on Broadway in 1975, and was awarded seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The show ran on Broadway for the next four years, followed by a national tour, a movie adaptation (starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson), a Broadway revival in 1984, a second national tour in 1992, and a live TV production in 2015.
It may be 50 years since the original Broadway production, but the themes are just as relevant today. Famously, The Wiz is a powerful celebration of Black excellence, highlighting the passion, perseverance, optimism and self-identity of a community facing troubling adversity. The songs, rooted in soul, gospel and R&B, became the soundtrack of many generations of Black Americans, and it was the first time for many to see themselves reflected on stage or in film in ways that they hadn’t before.
The Wiz has always been a contemporary story. Making the show fresh for today’s audiences is a creative team that has credits across many genres of popular culture, including Schele Williams, whose Broadway directing credits include Aida and Motown the Musical; JaQuel Knight who choreographed Beyonce’s Single Ladies, among other hit videos; Hannah Beachler, an Academy Award-winning scenic designer from Marvel’s Black Panther; and Sharen Davis, an Emmy Award-winning and two-time-Academy-Award-nominated costume designer.
Under the direction of Williams, this team’s goal is to tell the story of Dorothy, a young woman seeking to find her place in the world. She is challenged to do things that go well beyond her comfort zone, and work together with her newly found friends to solve problems along their journey. To get what they desire in the end, Dorothy and her friends learn they each must believe in themselves to unleash the power and purpose that lives within them. Isn’t this what we all universally desire in our lives?
Join me in following this brand-new production of The Wiz as it takes the Yellow Brick Road through Playhouse Square to Broadway.
Enjoy,
David Greene Senior VP of Programming

SETTING THE STAGE
for Success
We believe that all Cleveland youth should have access to high-quality arts education. Through the generosity of our donors, we have invested more than $12.6 million since 2016 to scale up neighborhood-based programs that serve thousands of youth year-round in music, dance, theater, photography, literary arts and curatorial mastery. That’s setting the stage for success. Find your passion, and partner with the Cleveland Foundation to make your greatest charitable impact.
