HSC RESULTS 2019
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dr Paul Burgis presents Year 12 student, Elisheva Biernoff-Giles with her award. Guest speaker and PLC Sydney Ex-student, Dr Rosemary Laing, looks on.
‘Once more we congratulate a PLC Sydney graduating cohort on their excellent HSC results.’ It is again the case in 2019 that PLC Sydney students have achieved the best possible outcome from their exams. Two students achieved the highest possible rank of 99.95. Over the past two years only 35 young women from all schools in NSW have achieved an ATAR of 99.95. Five of those students (14.2%) attended PLC Sydney. This gives me confidence we can teach to the highest level.
at overseas universities, and many more receiving scholarships or access to special programs. I will be attending university events early in 2020 for students who have received Co-op scholarships or the like. Our PLC Sydney Futures Program, run by Mrs Barnett, and receiving the support of Mrs Arnaudon (local university entry) and Mrs Wheeler (overseas university entry), has been very successful to date.
As you read the results in this booklet, remember that we are a non-selective school. This means that the student who attends PLC Sydney is improving their overall outcome. Our average mark was about 85%. In a compulsory subject like English almost every student scored a mark over 80%. Students who focused on sport also did well, with many receiving overseas university places, with scholarship support. Some students chose creative courses in the arts and their auditions have gone very well. This gives me confidence that we can reach each student.
We are proud of our 2019 cohort. We celebrate the hard work of each student. Their results are very similar to the excellent academic results of recent years.
We are yet to receive the full list of student university place entries, but the cohort was very happy with the offers made to them. We have at least five students
2
Finally, and more important than anything else, we are proud of the young women our graduating class have become. As their Principal, I am impressed by their grace and their diligence. Watching them interact at our morning tea in early December was a joy. We will follow their future vocational choices with great interest.
Dr Paul Burgis Principal

SARAH ONG Sarah Ong was nominated and selected for the 2020 ARTEXPRESS exhibition with her wonderful painting:, The Consequence of Light. In her Body of Work, Sarah painted five landscape compositions, each with six captured scenes during different times of the day from sunrise to sunset. She was fascinated by the shifting shadows and the discovery of new colours that only existed for that short period of time. The inspiration for her conceptual direction was the French Impressionist Movement and specifically, renowned artist Claude Monet. Sarah said she was intrigued by his conscious disassociation from objects and their commonly correlated colour to fully grasp the true colours of a natural environment without any bias.
ELISHEVA BIENOFF-GILES, SOPHIE MONTAGUE, ALEXANDRA RALEIGH AND LUCIE ROBERTS Elisheva Bienoff-Giles, Sophie Montague, Alexandra Raleigh and Lucie Roberts were nominated and selected for inclusion within OnSTAGE for their powerful Group Performance, ‘Maralinga.’ ‘Maralinga’ is a confronting and moving work about the 1960s British nuclear testing in Australia. The girls also performed the piece at PLC Sydney’s 2019 Speech Day on the stage of the Opera House to thunderous applause.
SYLVIA ZHANG Sylvia Zhang was nominated for both TEXSTYLE and SHAPE exhibitions. She was selected for the TEXSTYLE exhibition for her stunning work: Mythological figures, a costume to be worn at the Met Gala Ball.

HSC SUCCESS STORIES LING LING LIN
CHRISTINA SHI
SCHOOL CAPTAIN
ATAR - TOP 1% OF STATE ALL-ROUND ACHIEVERS LIST
What contributed to your HSC success? I think I’d define “success” in the HSC slightly differently to how it’s normally seen. I believe success in the HSC is about how much you’ve grown as an individual and how you’ve learned to confront challenges and manage stress. What helped me was the support of my family, friends and teachers as well as being able to really enjoy the process of learning. The HSC is a long process and the most important thing is to keep it consistent the whole way.
What is your fondest memory of your time at PLC Sydney? There are so many, but I’d have to say the entire final week of Year 12 - the celebrations and the tears.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney? To assume the best in other people and their intentions.
HSC advice for younger students? It might sound a bit crazy, but try to find a way to enjoy what you’re studying! It’s the best way to stay motivated and maintain consistency.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? Probably still studying! I hope to study medicine, which is a five or six year process, so if that happens I will be partway through a uni degree!
What contributed to your HSC success? Hard work and effort is the main crux of HSC success. Even if you are the most exceptionally gifted student, not working hard, taking notes and revising and asking questions means that you cannot achieve HSC “success”. Success derives from the power to push yourself to be the very best you can be.
What is your fondest memory of your time at PLC Sydney? Year 10 exchange was one of the most valuable experiences of my life.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney? You shouldn’t be afraid to seek advice from friends and teachers, in the end, your willingness to seek help and go the extra mile is not embarrassing but rather something to be proud of.
HSC advice for younger students? Don’t stress too much about it. Putting massive amounts of pressure upon yourself is very detrimental to your mental health so it is important to maintain positivity and self love. In addition, DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. It means you can clarify things you don’t understand and extend upon your knowledge. Your teachers really are the best resource. So do not just sweep it under the mat, trust that you can study it yourself later.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? Graduated from university and really truly beginning to find my place in the workplace.

VANESSA LIN ALL-ROUND ACHIEVERS LIST NOMINATED FOR ENCORE What contributed to your HSC success? Throughout Year 12, despite the stress that HSC brings, I’ve loved learning at PLC Sydney. Keeping a positive mindset focused on the process of learning rather than assessment marks helped me stay motivated through the difficult times. My HSC success is a product of my amazing classroom teachers’ guidance, support and willingness to always answer my many questions, collaboration with friends, support from my family and consistent studying.
What is your fondest memory of your time at PLC Sydney? There have been so many laughs and unforgettable moments over the six years I’ve been at PLC Sydney! I think my favourite memories are from Year 12. From eating cream cheese bagels in our Year 12 bible study group, to wearing sombreros during Dr Burgis’ fortnightly meetings, to heart to heart chats during our free periods, to our year group’s enthusiastic assembly serenades. Or music in period 6 where we are all tired and somewhat delirious, or biology dissections of a bullseye... Year 12 has been so richly filled with memories of laughter and love.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney? The most valuable lesson I’ve learned at PLC is encapsulated in our school song perfectly: it is our purpose to “to make the world a better place, and life a worthier thing.” Through Fuel, weekly chapel talks, teachers and the girls, I’ve learnt the importance of showing kindness and compassion.
HSC advice for younger students? For younger girls in Years 7-10, I would advise girls to try your best in your school exams. Although Year 7-11 doesn’t technically count to your HSC mark, the assessments are a good opportunity to understand how you effectively learn, what subjects you really enjoy and to start developing study habits. In Year 12 you’ll really appreciate the preparation you’ve done in the previous years. For girls sitting the HSC, I would encourage you to focus on your journey of Year 12 rather than the marks you’ll achieve. Year 12 is full of memories you’ll treasure forever, as well as lows and disappointments, which help you build strength and perseverance. Check in with your friends and support them when they go through tough times, and ask for help (from friends, family or teachers) when you need it. (I definitely did!) Finally, I’d say set a clear goal of the person you want to be at the end of high school. Hard working? Kind? Passionate? Brave? Embrace each piece of knowledge you gain, opportunity you’re given or friend you’ve made. It’s easy to compare yourself with your peers, but focus on doing your best because that is more than enough. Be kind to others, and be kind to yourself.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? As of right now, I don’t exactly know what I want to study in university. Regardless, in five years time, I hope I will be pursuing something I’m passionate about! I hope to keep learning, playing piano and cello and enjoying life with friends and family.
ELISHEVA BIERNOFF-GILES ALL ROUND ACHIEVERS LIST NOMINATED AND SELECTED FOR ONSTAGE What contributed to your HSC success? I think any successes that I achieved throughout this year are thanks to the teachers I’ve had. The support, genuine care and passion of my teachers has made my experience of learning one that is incredibly enriching and inspiring. My teachers have taught me to work hard, to have passion, and to approach things with my personal angle and individuality. Their belief in me has also enabled me to have belief in myself and my abilities.
What is your fondest memory of your time at PLC Sydney? My fondest memories all stem from class communities, especially my Extension 1 English class. The combination of intellectual, academic conversations as well as personal and real-life conversations meant that we built up a real sense of collective belonging in class. This formed really strong friendships with the whole class.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney? To have faith in myself and my abilities, and to offer them with humble confidence. I have learned that every person has a unique skill set, and that to share this is not at all arrogant if it can help others. I have learned to take up more space and to trust myself more.
HSC advice for younger students? To try and cultivate a sense of purpose with your work, that is separate to marks or achievements. To feel as though you will get something out of the task regardless of the result is very liberating. This encouraged me to take more risks, if it was about, for example, my genuine creative exploration of an idea rather than my response to get the most marks. Of course, this isn’t possible in all situations. When it isn’t at all enjoyable, just the knowledge that time passes very quickly this year, and that there are so many people that care for you can help get you through more difficult periods.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? I hope that I will have done a degree, maybe a Bachelor of Arts or Education. I hope that I will be on the way to a fulfilling job that directly impacts my community - such as teaching or working for charitable organisation. On the side, I hope that I am continuing my love for drama, music and writing through workshops, auditions and orchestras. I hope to be making a positive impact in the world.

GRACE ZHU ATAR - TOP 1% OF THE STATE ALL-ROUND ACHIEVERS LIST NOMINATED FOR ENCORE What contributed to your HSC success?
My fondest memory of my time at PLC Sydney is of a lunch time in Year 9. We were all sitting on the sunken lawn and I just remember thinking about how great the year group was, and how loved I felt. Spending time at Fuel in God’s word with fellow sisters in Christ.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney?
Being able to remain calm, and knowing that even though the HSC is important, none of my marks define my worth as a person in any way.
The most valuable lesson I have learnt at PLC Sydney is that hard work pays off. In all areas of life, not just academics. I also learnt that there will always be somebody there who wants to see you succeed, and who will help you through any experience. All you have to do is ask.
What is your fondest memory of your time at PLC Sydney?
HSC advice for younger students?
This is a hard question! My fondest memories always involve my friends and very supportive and honestly amazing teachers, so learning and being at PLC Sydney has been thoroughly enjoyable.
Somebody told me that it’s never too early to get started. My HSC experience has showed me that this is so true. Get on top of it ASAP. At the same time, trust that your hard work and preparation will pay off. When you walk into an exam, there’s no way you can learn more or study more, so trust what you know already and stay calm.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney?
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years?
Push yourself out of your comfort zone and take those risks you never know before you try, and even if you stumble and fall flat on your face, you have a supportive and encouraging network at PLC where you will most definitely be able to stand back up again.
I hope to see myself being proud of what I have achieved at that point in time.
HSC advice for younger students? You will not have a smooth journey, because there will most definitely be ups and downs during the HSC. During your good times, learn to appreciate where you have come and also those around you. During your bad times, don’t ignore it but rather accept it and actively work on what is bothering you, knowing it is temporary and you are not alone in your experience.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? I hope that I will be being the best version of myself, doing and learning things that I am genuinely interested in.

What contributed to your HSC success? The group of amazing people I was surrounded by during my time at PLC Sydney contributed massively to my HSC success. The staff at the school are so passionate about their work and were able to motivate me to reach my full potential. The results of their great work are seen in the girls at the school who created a perfect degree of competitiveness and support, which adds to creating an environment for success in all areas.

The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney? To be confident in my abilities and assets, the belief that a strong mindset can make many things possible.
HSC advice for younger students? The HSC is not as scary as it’s made out to be - it’s just like any other school year. Your health and happiness is the most important thing. Find a balance between studying and relaxing - and don’t let stress overtake your life. Comfort others and let yourself be comforted.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? To have found more of myself, and to have explored Sydney.

ALL-ROUND ACHIEVERS’ LIST NOMINATED AND SELECTED FOR ONSTAGE
What contributed to your HSC success? Support from teachers who were always willing to answer extra questions/give feedback on extra work. Also, when it felt like the whole year group was studying it influenced me to work to keep up with everyone.
What is your fondest memory of your time at PLC Sydney? The week in Year 12 when we were organising Galentine’s Day and we went around randomly ambushing girls with serenades. Everything was super wholesome and loads of fun and it was just a really good energy.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney? I don’t know if this was ever specifically taught but over the years I feel like I’ve learned that the number one thing is to support each other. That it’s important to check on how your friends are going, and that someone to listen to you is sometimes all you need.
HSC advice for younger students? I think we honestly got advice overload as we headed into the HSC. As long as you have goals and hold yourself accountable for the work that you put in, you should be fine. The rest is mostly noise.
What contributed to your HSC success? My teachers have supported me and are always willing to schedule meetings, which is incredibly generous and helpful. I feel that our cohort has also come together, sharing information and advice.
What is your fondest memory of your time at PLC Sydney? I can’t think of single moment, however Year 12 has been a highlight, as any social barriers have broken down, and I’ve had conversations and classes with people I didn’t know well that I now consider friends.
The most valuable lesson learnt at PLC Sydney? The importance of a strong support system, and the benefits that come from trying everything.
HSC advice for younger students? Do a little of each subject per night, even if a task seems daunting to just begin. I wasted a lot of time and energy thinking about how to write something amazing, instead of just writing anything at all.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? I hope to be studying for/working in a job I love, traveling and learning languages. I also hope to have learnt how to do my taxes!
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years? Holding onto valuable knowledge and skills I’ve gained at uni, and excited about the future. It’s not exactly specific, but the important part will be that I’m in a position where it feels like I could do anything. Hopefully also still in touch with my friends from PLC Sydney.
