HOW TO USE THIS BOOKLET
This booklet has been designed as a quick reference guide for parents and students requiring information about boarding at PLC Sydney. This publication is updated annually. Please make yourself familiar with the contents so that both you and your daughter will be equipped to move through the year with relative ease. This booklet has answers to many but not all questions related to boarding life. It normally takes a full year to feel you know almost everything there is to know at PLC Sydney.

IT IS A PLEASURE TO WARMLY WELCOME YOU TO OUR BOARDING COMMUNITY AT PLC SYDNEY. MY HOPE IS THAT ALL STUDENTS WILL FIND THE BOARDING EXPERIENCE A COMPLEMENT TO THEIR HOME LIFE AND WILL BE PERSONALLY EXTENDED AND ENRICHED.
There will be new routines and requirements to learn that have been designed to provide you with a safe, happy environment. There will also be plenty of challenges to be faced and opportunities for growth. My staff and I are here to help you embark on this new adventure and are with you all the way.
Boarding is a unique opportunity to live in a global village where you will learn to live with others, share experiences and learn from one another. You need to develop an open, honest attitude, be respectful, get involved, take responsibility for yourself, practise good manners and develop sound personal values. Boarding provides each girl with the opportunity to develop independence and the more you learn to manage yourself, the easy this transition becomes.
The boarding experience will ultimately be what you make of it. The more involved and open to these new experiences you are, the more settled and fulfilled you will feel. Communication is paramount to a happy home and we encourage everyone to speak freely and openly with staff and one another.
It is my passion that as a boarder you will have a positive, enriching experience while living at PLC Sydney and my staff and I are committed to this end.

GENERAL BOARDING INFORMATION
THE BOARDING HOUSE IS IN THE HEART OF PLC SYDNEY, SITUATED IN THE CENTRE OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL GROUNDS. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1888, PLC SYDNEY HAS ALWAYS PROVIDED A BOARDING FACILITY.
The first three enrolments were boarders and their names label each wing of the Boarding House today. The house has a long, varied history and has been in the present location since 1890.
PLC Sydney is located in the inner west of Sydney, Australia’s most vibrant city. Because the city is a short train trip from the College, boarders can easily enjoy Sydney’s festivities and events for many weekend activities.
PLC Sydney has a proud history of welcoming students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and this commitment continues to provide
the College with a rich, diverse learning environment.
The Boarding House has accommodation for approximately sixty-five boarders from the city, country and overseas. The house is home to girls from Year 7 through to Year 12 who are either fulltime or weekly boarders. The students live in shared rooms with the exception of Year 12 boarders who have single rooms. There are three common living areas, providing the boarders with somewhere to relax, watch television (including DVDs) and have fun. There are also sewing facilities and games available.

PREPARING TO ENTER BOARDING SCHOOL
To prepare for boarding life, it is recommended that students discuss the following things with their parents before they arrive:
• being part of activities and balancing leisure with studies
• personal hygiene: showering daily, using deodorant and managing menstruation
• balanced eating habits
• asking for help when feeling lost or just worried about the new lifestyle
• the dangers associated with the internet and appropriate use of this technology
• budgeting for each term
• why she is changing schools and entering boarding life.
To prepare for boarding life, it is recommended that students acquire the following skills before they arrive:
• ability to make her own bed
• ability to care for and organise her own belongings
• ability to maintain a tidy room
• willingness to socialise and mix with others
• ability and willingness to hold a conversation with someone new
• ability to use an iron and wash and dry clothes.
• ability to self-entertain
BOARDING ARRANGEMENTS
PLC Sydney provides full and weekly boarding. Full boarding is the most common arrangement but a number of local students enjoy the option of weekly boarding.
Weekly boarders are local students who return home every weekend. Weekly boarders are to return either Sunday
evening by 8.30 pm or Monday morning by 8.00 am. Weekly boarders are expected to be residing in the Boarding House from Monday to Friday, not requesting leave through the week.
Temporary boarding is only available when there is a vacant bed in specified year groups.
BOARDING HOUSE STAFF
The Boarding House is supervised by a dedicated team of staff who are committed to delivering best practice residential care around the clock.
WELL-BEING
The boarders are cared for by a dedicated team of staff and liaise closely with the Heads of Year, College Chaplains, School Counsellors and College Nurse, who all have a vital role in the Boarding House community. Students may speak to any staff member about any concern.
BOARDERS’ COMMITTEE
The Boarders’ Committee is made up of an elected representative from each year group along with the Boarders’ Captain and a Boarders’ Prefect. They meet fortnightly with the Senior Supervisor and discuss ideas and issues relevant to community living.
The two staff members on duty are contactable from 7.00 am to 11.00Â pm weekdays and from 8.00 am to 11.00Â pm weekends.
All boarders are free to make an appointment directly with the Counsellors at their discretion. All new boarders are required to attend one meeting with the Counsellor within the first term of arrival.
Boarders are urged to discuss any ideas they may have with their elected representative.
The Boarders’ Captain and Prefects are elected by the student body. In this role the student holds an important position on the Prefect Body of the College.

AABSENTEEISM
If a boarder is ill and will be absent from the Boarding House or school during term time, the following procedure should be followed:
1. On the expected day of return, a phone call or email explaining the absence is to be sent through to the Boarding House.
2. The student must return with a letter from her parent/guardian or a doctor’s certificate covering the period of absence.
3. Years 10—12 students must present a doctor’s certificate if they are absent from any assessment or examination.

ACTIVITIES
All boarders are encouraged to take part in all Boarding House activities. Each term a calendar of weekend activities for Years 7 to 9 is drawn up and students are able to plan their weekends around these activities. This list is created with input from the Boarders’ Committee. All activities are designed to be interesting, fun learning experiences and boarders will need sufficient funds to cover these activities.
Activities may include such things as city trips, movies, markets, ferry trips, etc. There are several full house activities throughout the year that all boarders are required to attend. Boarders are invited by other schools to attend dances and these are built into the social calendar as often as possible. All junior girls need personal Opal cards for activity travel.
ACTIVITIES FUND
There is a $250 levy added to each boarder’s school account each semester to cover the cost of full house activities such as the Boarder’s House outings attended by all boarders, special dinners, graduation and gifts.
ALARM CLOCKS
Boarders in Years 7 to 11 are required to bring their own battery charged alarm clock, other than a mobile phone, if they choose to wake earlier than 7.00 am for early sport or training, for example. The alarm clock is to be beside the bed and students are to make every effort not to disturb their roommates. Clocks without a bright light are best as they do not disturb others.
BBAD NEWS
Boarding staff are very mindful of how difficult it is to receive bad news over the phone and away from family. Therefore it is recommended that parents/guardians contact the Principal or the Director of Boarding who will ensure the student is supported by staff during a difficult time. Boarders need time to process bad news and bed time is not an appropriate time to relay bad news. If possible, please call straight after school. If required, the Principal or Director of Boarding is available to speak to students on behalf of parents.
BANK ACCOUNTS
All students are responsible for their own private banking and financial arrangements. These accounts should be set up and activated by parents prior to their daughter’s arrival at the Boarding House. There is an automatic teller machine available in Croydon and full banking facilities can be found in Burwood.
BEDROOMS
Each student is responsible for the care and order of her belongings and the tidiness of her bedroom. Students need to be sensitive to the needs of the girls with whom they share rooms. Beds must be made every morning, rooms left neat and tidy, garbage bins emptied, desks orderly, windows/curtains open and all electrical equipment turned off. Bedrooms are a shared place to rest and relax, respect for each other is very important.
BEDDING/LINEN
Every boarder is provided with a pillow, bed sheets and bath towels. The linen is sent out to be laundered every week. The students are required to change their own beds and put out dirty sheets and towels on the specified day. Every boarder needs her own doona and two covers (see requirements on page 34).

A half hour reading time is given to Years 7 to 9. When students are not in bed at the appropriate time they may lose their reading time.
We believe sleep is essential for the good health and wellbeing of all girls. Everyone suffers if some students are slow to settle at night. Research suggests that adolescents require a minimum of nine hours sleep each night. More information on the need for sleep is easily found online.
Appropriate sleepwear must be worn to bed each night. See packing list for sleepwear on page 34.
BIRTHDAYS
Birthdays are always remembered in the boarding community. Students are able to celebrate this special day during dinner, with their choice of dessert or cake.
All boarders need to come prepared for room mate or friends’ birthdays, either with enough money to purchase a gift or bring a gift ready.
CANDLES, OIL BURNERS AND INCENSE
These items are prohibited for students at all times due to fire regulations.
CHURCH
All boarders are encouraged to attend church. All boarders attend a chapel service on Tuesday evenings from 5.30 pm. The College Chaplain conducts the service.
Boarders wanting to attend Sunday services need to speak with the Director of Boarding.
COMPUTERS AND INTERNET USE: WIFI
The Boarding House is fitted with a wireless network and therefore students are able to access the internet from their own rooms. Computer programmes must be in English if any support is required.
Students in Years 7 to 10 hand in their laptops, iPads or internet devices for locking away for safety at bed time every night. Year 11 hand in their phones only. They are able to access them again after breakfast each morning. All senior boarders must turn their technology off at bed time and not use them while others are sleeping.
Parents are advised to have their daughter’s laptop insured for safety.
CONDUCT
Boarders are expected to be courteous, sensitive and polite to each other and staff. Bad manners and undesirable language are not in keeping with the College ethos, nor are they in keeping with the standing and grooming of intelligent young women.
Rules are based on common sense, cooperative living and acceptable standards of behaviour. If a boarder consistently misbehaves in Prep, during bed times or is continually late, she will be given a detention. All students who misbehave receive a warning about the consequences of their actions. If a student continues misbehaving then action is taken appropriate to the misbehaviour.
Under no circumstances can a detention be postponed and this applies to all full and weekly boarders.
GRIEVANCES AND DISPUTES
Life is full of problems waiting to be solved and the best way to solve them is by speaking up. Students should speak to any of the Boarding House staff about issues that concern them. The Year 11 and 12 students are also available for discussions with younger students. They have often been in similar situations and are in an excellent position to provide advice and help.
Parents are encouraged to call the Director of Boarding should they have concerns or questions.
The Boarding House supports an open, direct, non-critical approach to resolving personal and institutional challenges.
DDAY GIRLS
It is important for boarders to make friends with the day students. These students help broaden and enrich the experience of city living.
DRIVER TRAINING AND DRIVER’S LICENSES
The College provides a driving instructor and car for all boarders to learn to drive. Driving lessons may be taken after school hours and bookings are arranged through the Bursar’s Office. Tests may only be taken after school in Burwood. A letter to the Bursar’s Office is required from parents, giving permission for their daughter to take lessons. DRUGS (INCLUDING TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL)
Drugs are prohibited substances. Smoking, drinking alcohol or drug taking is not tolerated. Offenders will be referred to the Principal for disciplinary action.
EEARLY MORNING WAKE-UP
Boarders with early sporting commitments are responsible for getting themselves up and to their activity on time. Boarders must discuss their plans with staff the night before and have all items outside bedrooms ready for early departure so as not to disturb room mates. No student is to be moving around their room before the official wake-up time.
ELECTRICAL ITEMS
Students are not permitted to have:
• electric blankets
• cooking devices of any sort
• electric kettles
• personal heaters or fans.
Electrical items not listed above may be brought into the Boarding House by students but must be checked and tagged by staff at the beginning of each year. International power devices must comply with Australian standards or they will be removed. The College does not support international electrical appliances.
EMERGENCY DRILL
Emergency drills are conducted each semester. Boarders are instructed on how to behave in emergency situations.

FITNESS
It is important for all students to maintain a healthy lifestyle, this helps developing brains and bodies. PLC Sydney provides many activities to assist in this area. Students are able to join the weights room for regular supervised training sessions, aquatic centre for swim for fitness as well as all the normal school sports groups.
FOOD
Students may keep food in the Boarding House refrigerators. It must be sealed and clearly labelled in order to maintain good hygiene. Food must not be eaten in the common areas, other than the Dining Room. No hot food or hot drinks are to be carried into the Boarding House at any time without a sealed lid.
Online food ordering and food deliveries are not permitted at anytime.
FURNITURE
Bedrooms are set with the safest and best possible use of furniture in mind. Students are therefore not permitted to move furniture in their rooms. Year 12 boarders are able to move their bed and desk as desired with assistance. Any added furniture Year 12 bring, must be taken home at the end of the year.
GGUARDIANS
All interstate and overseas boarders are required to have a Sydney-based guardian or host family who is responsible for the student when they are out of the boarding environment. Appointed guardians must be over twenty-five years of age and available to care for the student in an emergency, such as illness. They must be readily contactable by phone and speak fluent English. A detailed outline of guardian responsibilities is provided by the Coordinator of Overseas Students for international boarders.
HHOLIDAYS
School holidays are very important opportunities for boarders to spend time at home with family and friends. The first few holidays home are often very difficult and when it comes time to return to school students may feel reluctant to leave home. They need support and to be told that returning will become easier with time.
All boarders need to participate in packing their rooms at the conclusion of each term and the end of term activities, as this helps set the feeling of belonging and personal responsibility. Upon return from holidays, all boarders are expected to be at the Boarding House between 11.00 am and 5.00 pm, ready for dinner. Students need the evening to see friends, unpack and prepare for the term to commence. This is a very important night and sets the tone for the rest of term.
The Boarding House does not remain open during the holidays and therefore all holiday arrangements are required one month before holidays commence.
Flight details are to be booked six months in advance to ensure the flight you desire. Please do not ask for extended holidays due to flight problems. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
For requests to leave or return outside of normal calendar dates requires a Release Form from the Deputy Principal’s office early in the term.
BOARDERS’ FREE WEEKENDS
Boarders’ free weekends are weekends scheduled in the middle of term when a public holiday occurs and students are able to leave school after 3.00 pm on the calendared date. Arrangements must be made well in advance to ensure travel schedules can be booked. Students will not be allowed to leave the College early or return late on these weekends.
Students are to be collected from the Boarding House by 6.00 pm on the day of leave unless alternative arrangements have been made with staff. They are expected to return between 4.30 pm and 8.30 pm on the return day or by 8.00 am on the following school day, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Director of Boarding.
HOMESICKNESS
Homesickness is a healthy, normal expression of a daughter’s love for her parents and her home environment. It is not something to be overly concerned about during telephone conversations. The extent of homesickness varies greatly. It is not unusual for many parents to feel great sadness as their daughter goes away to school. This is normal and an indication of the care and concern a parent holds for his/her daughter.
If parents become concerned by the level of homesickness expressed in tears over the telephone, they should contact the Boarding House staff. It is not uncommon for boarders to ring their parents and dump their worries and anxieties on them before heading off to have a cheerful evening with friends — a situation that may leave parents feeling helpless. If parents are concerned they should contact the Director of Boarding.
IINSURANCE
PLC Sydney does not provide insurance for the personal belonging of its boarders. Each boarder is responsible for the safety of her own belongings. Parents are advised to have their daughter’s laptop insured for safety.
INTERNATIONAL BOARDERS
International students need to read the Information for Overseas Students publication (https://www.plc.nsw.edu.au/enrolments/international-students/) prior to commencement. The Coordinator of Overseas Students is available to be contacted as needed.
JJEWELLERY
Students with expensive jewellery are advised to leave it at home. Any precious pieces brought to school must be locked in the Boarding House Office for security when not in use. It should be noted that jewellery is not allowed with school uniform. Students, parents and guardians need to acquaint themselves with College regulations regarding the wearing of jewellery. The only visible body piercing permitted is for one set of earrings. Tattooing is not permitted at anytime.
LLAUNDRY AND DRY CLEANING
Laundries are equipped with washing machines and dryers. Boarders need to know how to wash their clothes prior to arrival. Please teach your daughter how to wash her clothes prior to arriving.
LINEN DAYS
Every Tuesday and Thursday morning is personal laundry day. All items are returned the following laundry day. A laundry basket is provided for each student.
LEAVE PROCESS
SIGNING OUT
All students must be signed in and out of the Boarding House by a staff member any time they take leave. Parents/guardians must always come into the Boarding House and collect or return boarders.
Online leave is managed through Reach. An invitation is sent to you to join the online leave program at the start of the year. Please see Portal for details on Reach. (https://places.plc.sydney/places/boarding-house)
WEEKEND OVERNIGHT LEAVE
1. All leave requests are to be authorised by a parent or guardian living in Australia. This is to be completed by Wednesday afternoon.
2. Requests received later than Wednesday afternoon may not be approved.
3. It is the responsibility of the guardian or parent to make contact with any host family.
4. If visiting a Day friend’s home, confirmation from the Day School parent is required in addition to the leave request form and the parent’s email is included in the Host section of Leave.
5. All school commitments must be fulfilled prior to leave being granted. All Year 7 to 11 boarders returning for a school activity when on leave must be accompanied by an adult.
6. Year 7 to 10 students are permitted on public transport on Mondays and Fridays in the company of the day students only. Full school uniform is to be worn when travelling after school and returning on Monday the same as day students.
7. Year 11 and 12 students may travel home alone before 4.00 pm by train when on weekend leave.
WEEKEND DAY LEAVE: Friday/Saturday
• Year 7 to 9 boarders must have parent permission for weekend day leave and be escorted by an adult.
• Accompanied Year 7 to 12 boarders must be in the Boarding House by 9.30 pm.
• Unaccompanied Year 11 and 12 boarders must be in the Boarding House by 5.00 pm.
• Year 12 may negotiate special leave with the Director of Boarding on Wednesday for weekend movie/dinner leave.
• On Sunday, all returning boarders are to be in the Boarding House by 8.30 pm in the company of an adult.
DAY LEAVE DURING SCHOOL HOURS
• Requests for day leave during school hours are to be sent to the Boarding House Office and approval given by the Deputy Principal or Director of Boarding.
• Overnight leave during the week may be permitted under special circumstances. A letter of request is required, and is generally only in the company of a parent.
COLLECTION OF STUDENTS
Students flying into Australia are required to be collected from the airport by their guardians. All boarders are to be collected and returned to the Boarding House by their guardians, parents or approved visitors. No taxis, trains or buses permitted. See Student Concierge Information on Boarding Portal if further assistance is needed as an approved organisation.
EARLY LEAVE
All students are required to be in the College until the end of every term. For early leave requests, parents must consult with the Deputy Principal in writing well in advance of departure and complete an ‘Application for Extended Leave Travel Vacation’ form, found in the Parent Portal under Absentee.
AFTERNOON WEEKDAY LEAVE
Croydon
Boarders may walk to Croydon after school. Students in Years 7 to 10 must go in pairs or groups for no longer than one hour. Year 11 and 12 students may go unaccompanied. All boarders must be signed out on departure and signed in on return.
Burwood/Ashfield
Year 7 to 9 students must seek approval to go to Burwood. Students in Year 10 may go to Burwood in pairs for up to four hours on weekends and Year 11 may go to Burwood or Ashfield in pairs and/or groups with approval from staff. Year 12 may go any afternoon unaccompanied with approval from staff. All boarders must sign out on departure and sign in on return.
City
Year 11 students may go to the city on Friday afternoons or weekends in pairs or groups with day leave request submitted on Wednesday. Year 12 may go to the city in pairs any afternoon. Staff must be informed. All boarders must be signed out on departure and signed in on return. All students must return before 5.00 pm or the privilege is removed.
General
Students may go out for afternoon tea or dinner with family members under special circumstances at the discretion of the Director of Boarding. Boarders are to be back in time for Prep at 6.30 pm. Weeknight leave will not be granted for music concerts unless they are school excursions.
TRAVEL PASSES (LOCAL STUDENTS ONLY)
Free passes only apply for New South Wales and are not available for interstate or overseas students. At the beginning of the year students receive forms to fill out for free travel on State Rail to and from home. These passes must be carried at all times otherwise full fares will apply. If the pass is lost, the student will need to apply at the State Rail Enquiries Office for a new pass at a cost. The Director of Boarding makes rail or bus reservations for end of term holidays and boarders’ free weekends. Students are encouraged to purchase Opal cards for city travel use. See ‘Opal Card’ section.

PLC Sydney does not permit travel in a Taxi or Uber at anytime. Please see Information on Concierge Services found on the Boarding Portal.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
Students with special food requirements must notify the Director of Boarding and provide a letter from a doctor outlining the special diet requirements.
If you are on a very specific diet then you may need to provide food items personally. Vegetarians also need a letter from parents or a medical professional requesting a vegetarian diet plus any specifics relating to vegetarianism.
There are limits to the College’s ability to provide a balanced diet for very specialised diet plans.
MEALS
Meal times are considered to be an important time of the day, therefore all students are required to attend. Breakfast dress is full school uniform. Dinner dress must always be neat, and on occasions, is formal. Full school uniform or good casual clothes (skirts, dresses, trousers, presentable jeans, suitable shoes) may be worn. Pyjamas, torn jeans or rubber thongs are not considered appropriate clothing.
DINING ETIQUETTE
1. Students quietly line up outside the dining room.
2. Year 12 enters first, followed by Year 11, etc.
3. Students stand quietly by their designated chair until grace is said.
4. Each table is asked to collect their meal in order.
5. Late arrivals are required to present themselves to the head table and excuse themselves before sitting down.

Breakfast finishes promptly at 7.50 am during the week to enable the kitchen to prepare for canteen use. No student is excused from any meal without prior arrangement with the Director of Boarding.
MEDICAL ISSUES
PLC Sydney has a nurse on campus Monday to Friday 8.00 am - 3.30 pm.
If unwell on a weekday, students are to notify the Director of Boarding and College Nurse. Boarders are to go to the Health Centre during the day if they are unwell if a prolonged period of rest is required. All medical forms and information pertaining to any boarder must be sent through to the Health Centre as soon as possible.
MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS
All local Croydon/Burwood medical/optical/dental/orthodontic/chiropractic/ physiotherapy appointments are to be made by the College Nurse. Students are to be escorted to specialist medical appointments by parents, guardian, or a relative.
Full uniform is to be worn for all appointments. International students must have the means to cover medical fees at the time of the medical visit. The local pharmacy provides medicines and personal items, to be paid for at the time of purchase. Any additional expenses incurred are billed to the student’s school account.
All allergies, asthma, and special dietary needs must be notified on entry to the College with a Medical Plan from a doctor.
MEDICATION
No medication is to be kept in a student’s room. All medication is administered by the College Nurse or Boarding House staff. All medicines must be handed into the Boarding House office for storage and must comply with the Australian Department of Health Regulations (Pharmaceutical Branch).
If any item is in violation of these codes of practice or legislation it will be confiscated and returned to parents. All medications must be labelled in English by a doctor or pharmacist.
MEDICARE-PRIVATE HEALTH FUNDS
At the beginning of every year a Student Medical Consent and Procedure Form is to be completed online and must include an up-to-date Medicare number and accurate up-to-date medical history.
Overseas students must have private medical insurance.

MONEY AND PERSONAL POSSESSIONS
It is not advisable for large amounts of money (even if in foreign currency) to be kept in a student’s room, it should be handed to Boarding House staff for safekeeping in the Boarding House office. The College takes no responsibility for lost money or valuables when left in bedrooms.
MUSIC PRACTICE
Students requiring practice times are to organise these with the Music Department. The Grand Piano in College Hall is available to boarders out of school hours. There are a number of areas available for music practice around the College. The boarders’ music practice room is available between 6.00 am and 8.30 pm.
OOPAL CARDS
All boarders will need to purchase a personal Opal card for travel on city rail, with auto top up. Country students are to apply for a Country Link Pass online (https://transportnsw.info/tickets-opal/ticket-eligibility-concessions/schoolstudent-travel/apply-for-boarder-rail-pass).
PPARENT/TEACHER NIGHTS AND REPORTS
Parents or guardians are expected to attend parent/teacher evenings. If parents are not available they can arrange to speak with the Head of Year and teaching staff about their daughter’s progress at any time throughout the year. Reports are sent out twice a year and a Boarding Report is also included. An online option may be available if requested.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Parents/guardians, please notify the Director of Boarding if any of your contact details change (including address or phone number). If you are out of Sydney or Australia and not able to be contacted for an emergency, please notify the Director of Boarding with the name and phone number of an alternate adult for emergency contact.
PASSPORT, ENTRY RENEWALS AND VISAS
All passport and visa requirements are to be completed by the student’s family. Copies must be supplied to the Enrolments Office and guardian. All overseas boarders must have their passports held in the Boarding House office. A copy of all flights are required prior to the end of every term.
PETS
Students are able to have a small fish tank that requires basic care. The student is responsible for care and hygiene. All pets must be taken home during holiday periods.
PREP
Prep is the time used for supervised homework and is conducted Monday to Thursday nights.
Students are supervised by our Academic Support Staff and boarding staff who are able to help the students with their homework.
PREP TIMES
Early Prep: 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm (optional hour only for senior years)
Years 7-9: 6.45 pm to 8.30 pm (compulsory)
Years 10-11: 6.45 pm to 9.00 pm (compulsory)
Year 12: 6.45 pm to 10.00 pm or as needed
During Prep all students are required to be quietly working. For group study, students must ask permission and a space will be made available, if possible. No mobile phones are permitted during Prep and will be confiscated if found in use. Handbooks are checked each week and when needed, nightly, classwork must be written in the handbook neatly for staff to be able to assist.
Students missing Prep due to club sport will be required to make up this time at Early Prep or the following day. All students are to be organised and prepared for Prep at 5.50 pm. The girls leave their Prep bags in the library before dinner. Girls are not permitted to walk around the campus collecting items for Prep after dinner.
SSCHOOL FUNCTIONS
There are certain school and boarding functions that all boarders are required to attend. Please make a note of these events as they are important activities and help to add a sense of belonging to the College community.
Speech Day is compulsory for all PLC Sydney students.

SPORTING AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
All boarders are strongly encouraged to participate in a team sport and co-curricular activities. Students need to arrange travel to these events with their coaches, teams or guardians, in consultation with the Director of Boarding. All boarders are required to participate in sporting teams each semester.
When parents are in Sydney for the weekend it is our expectation that you would escort your daughter to and from her game. Organising travel to sporting events helps boarders learn independence and organisational skills. It is important that students learn to manage this area of their boarding life and talk with staff when there is an issue.
Students in Years 10 to 12 may catch public transport to sport on Saturdays in groups only.
Sport leave is to be submitted by Thursday evening.
STORAGE
All boarders are to leave their rooms spotless and tidy before leaving for the holidays. There is space provided for storage for a limited number of items during the year. Bulky items must be left in the care of guardians or family.
TTELEPHONES
The boarders may receive calls on the Mance corridor telephone during their free time but not after 9.00 pm. Mobile phones are allowed in the Boarding House for use during normal phone times. Use after bed time, during meals or Prep is not permitted. Please don’t call the girls during study time.
Mobile phones belonging to students in Years 7 to 11 are collected before bed and are placed in a locked room until morning for safekeeping and to help regulate sleep times. Any student using her phone outside the permitted times or handing in a fake phone, will have the device confiscated.
The College takes no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged property that has not been kept in a locked facility.

TUTORING
All students are able to access tutoring through PLC Sydney’s Futures Centre, located on campus. Any tutoring requirements must be discussed with the Director of Boarding prior to booking sessions as time slots may conflict.

Off campus tutoring is permitted for Years 11-12 only. A discussion regarding times and tutoring organisations is to be arranged with the Director of Boarding prior to booking a time slot or a tutoring school.
Normal leave hours apply for all tutoring off campus. All private tutors must have up to date Working With Children checks provided and a Doc signed off.

All boarders must have their name clearly marked onto the neck or waist area of all items of clothing. Clothing is laundered at an external facility twice a week and items will go astray if unlabelled. Items of clothing not laundered externally (these include belts, shoes and ties) must also be named. A boarder’s full name is to be engraved on watches, badges and tennis racquets, etc. See the Boarding Portal for information regarding labels.
VVEHICLES
No student, while boarding, is allowed to bring a motor vehicle to school.
VISITORS
Boarders may receive approved visitors after school or on weekends provided school commitments are met first. Students are to introduce the visitor to staff on arrival and departure. Visitors should remain within the common areas of the Boarding House only.
No male visitor is allowed beyond the foyer area except on the first day of every term and with approval from boarding staff.
