PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME
One of the wonderful characteristics of PLC Sydney Year 12 2022 is their capacity to support and encourage each other. They are a positive and unified group.
This enables them to be confident in their designs, and to express their creativity. I am very excited to present their work to you as it stands at this point in the HSC year.
As you peruse the variety of presentations I ask you to consider the huge range of backgrounds and qualities possessed by each student. We are proud of each student, and we are proud of the staff who guide them through the process from a blank page to the exceptional work you see on show tonight.

CAPTAIN’S ADDRESS
Despite the many challenges of our final year, starting behind our laptops with muted zoom sessions and pyjama pants as an essential part of the uniform. We managed to push through and were blessed to have the rest of our year at school. However, the enormity of taking on a major work remained a constant in each of our minds. This year challenged us, to rethink how we thought, to push our problem solving skills and to truly have faith that our ideas held purpose and in ourselves. I am so proud and happy to congratulate everyone on their outstanding achievements. It is not only the final works that you see in the Gallery, it is the many adjustments, reconfiguring, brainstorming and the constant thought of how can I make this better? It is the achievement of executing a vision into a reality.
To my cohort, I am not only so impressed and proud of the quality works we have all produced. But I’m so grateful for the sense of community and sisterhood we have created. I feel completely safe to brainstorm ideas and equally take criticism and suggestions as we all are growing and helping each other throughout this intense and wonderful creative process. It’s such a pleasure to share in each girls triumphants as it’s an experience we all feel connected to, and the sense of determination to creatively solve problems I think is a vital skill which we will all take with us into our future endeavours.
I would like to give a special thanks to the teachers who stood with us, side by side, guiding and acting as sources of inspiration, mentors and at times our heros. When it gets to that point of overwhelming stress and feeling as though there is no hope. Our teachers were the ones who led us out of this darkness, and revealed new perspectives and ways of viewing these problems, transforming our worries and doubts into tools of motivation and drive to fix and adjust; and most importantly to never give up.
I’m so grateful we have this opportunity to gather together in celebrating these wonderful achievements and gratifying each and every girls work.
Miss Lara Marassa Art & Design Captain 2022The HSC design exhibition is an opportunity for our students to showcase their creative vision, innovative design practice and complex construction skills through their Major Projects. Contemporary inspiration sources are explored to ensure that a range of unique products can be created, with a functional purpose. Our students have produced a range of inspired solutions this year.
Textiles and Design students have developed an exciting range of works that show a creative application of historical, cultural and contemporary sources of inspiration. Each design has been developed through ongoing experimentation and the application of a range of high-quality decorative and structural textile techniques. Their portfolio documentation communicates the ongoing process in the challenging development of a quality final solution.
Our Design and Technology students have explored diverse design fields that reflect their individual interests and passions. Undertaking a complex design process that included ongoing research, idea development, prototyping and experimentation has allowed each individual to create a broad range of high-quality solutions. These young designers are to be commended for their enthusiasm and perseverance in the development and application of their skills after two years of limited access to specific tools and technological equipment.
We celebrate the success of our wonderful designers through this exciting exhibition.

My Major Textiles Project is a costume to be worn at the Milan fashion week which is geometric themed. My inspiration is from contemporary designer Balmain, 1990s historical corset and Japanese origami. My design incorporates geometric shapes along the garment reflecting Balmain’s design style. Appliquéd hexagons in a range of fabrics which creates different textures and depth to the skirt giving a detailed, intricate finish. The boning emphasises the elements of a corset inspired by the historical 1990s corset John Paul Gaultier. The sleeves are recycled fabric reused from the cutout fabric of the hexagons used on the skirt. All together the dress is a heavily embellished structured garment with intricacy and detail.

Identification and exploration of the Need
My personal experience
am a Year 12 Design and Technology student. I am living with cerebral palsy and use a wheelchair. I am interested in creating a range of garments that are suitable for people in wheelchairs. In my experience, it is difficult to find and buy suitable clothing to wear. compete in wheelchair Athletics and have qualified for T33/34 100m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. I am currently ranked #1 in the world for T33 Open 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.
Many designers do not consider people in wheelchairs Casual and formal clothing often neglects people with limited dexterity or mobility issues and commonly suits a standing silhouette. Although designers are starting to work in accessible fashion, which can seen in this year’s Australian Fashion Week. There are still big gaps in the market as affordable clothing for young women in wheelchairs still caters mainly for older people. Wheelchair accessible clothing needs to be comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and functional. In my personal opinion and experience, the main problems in clothing currently are;
● many necklines often gape when seated
● armholes often restrict movement when pushing
● thin straps easily slip off the shoulders
● garment length shifts when seated which is not ideal when pushing a wheelchair, especially dresses and skirts above the knee
● garment width at the waist needs to be fitted enough so that the clothing does not catch or soil in the wheels.
These are things to consider when designing clothing for people in wheelchairs.
How does this relate to the MDP?
As I am in a wheelchair, I have an insight into how different types of clothing work and don’t work for people in wheelchairs. I can see the gap in the market and I am extremely passionate about designing wheelchair accessible clothing. There are limited options to buy clothing that looks nice as well as being suitable for a young adult in a wheelchair. This gave me the ability to explore what does and doesn’t work with clothing myself. I belong to a community of wheelchair users, through my my sport. Their knowledge and experiences, helps to me to make informed design choices so that my project caters to wider community and not just my own personal preferences.

My inspiration sources are Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please Collection, the traditional archers turned elves in the Japanese Edo period and the androgynous fashion culture. A faux leather panelled tank top incorporates specific features from the roofing of Japanese Edo Architecture called Noyane. The elongated pleated pants are influenced by Issey Miyake’s focus on structure and form.
