Our Scholars Who will make up the next generation of leaders? Ninety U of A student change-makers from faculties across North Campus and Campus Saint-Jean (CSJ) participated in PLLC this year to prepare to tackle 21st-century issues. With two or more years of their undergraduate degree complete, our program enabled each scholar to expand their studies alongside students with different world views, skill sets and goals. Many PLLC scholars have successfully applied to medical and law schools or been motivated to pursue unique graduate programs. Scholars lead on campus in clubs and fundraisers, or as U of A Students’ Union executives, including president Akanksha Bhatnagar and vice-president external Adam Brown. We’re confident that this interdisciplinary group of dedicated students will continue to provide positive leadership in their communities.

Scholars premiered their vodcasts at the Garneau Theatre to a crowd of family, peers and U of A staff and faculty.

#UAlbertaCares: Vodcasting Leadership INT D 301 Lights, camera, action! With the support of partners including ATB Financial, the Office of the Dean of Students and its Community Social Work Team, first-year scholars worked with a professional production team to practise advocacy through the creation of a series of videos focusing on mental wellness resources and strategies at the U of A. Each forum created a training video for a U of A demographic, offering a resource that will improve mental-wellness support for future staff and students. This initiative was supported in part by Brian and Cecile Silzer. The parents of U of A alumna Catherine Silzer, who died by suicide three years ago, are seeking to raise awareness of mental wellness on campus with a donation to U of A mental health initiatives. While the scholars already appreciated the value of mental wellness, this legacy donation enhanced their commitment to the success of these vodcasts, which will be part of a larger #UAlbertaCares campaign. Screening Sponsored by:

Resilience in Edmonton: Capstone Leadership Project INT D 407 This year, instructor Debra Davidson partnered with the City of Edmonton to challenge scholars to consider the city’s ability to respond to change and plan for climate change. Conducting a collaborative resilience assessment, scholars produced a comprehensive list of recommendations for innovation across a number of areas: from economy and governance to diversity, accessibility, and social capital. At the scholar's final presentation, Coun. Michael Walters brought greetings from the city and presented the class with a congratulatory certificate.

“ My trip is over, but I bring back refined skills such as communication, problem solving ... and success from my endeavour.” Advocating for Menstrual Health in Rural India Simran Gulati, Faculty of Science

Honours cell biology student Simran Gulati won this year’s $5,000 Tavender Award to further her Stretch Experience. She travelled to India with the Rotary Club as part of her Stretch Experience to spread awareness of menstrual hygiene in rural communities. Throughout her 10 weeks touring villages surrounding the city of Chandigarh, Simran spoke to over 1,500 males and females between the ages of 13 and 40. While menstruation is not a controversial topic in Canada, her menstrual hygiene campaign faced opposition in India because of outdated gender norms and pervasive myths. Believing “the holes in their education lead to holes in their health,” she persevered, raising awareness by presenting at schools and answering personal questions one-on-one. Her efforts positively impacted gender equality in the individuals and communities she reached. Simran is proud of the success of her project and is now even more passionate about the issue than when she began. Now that she has gained confidence in her ability to advocate for a cause, she sees opportunities to raise awareness locally. With the $5,000 award, Simran plans to offer educational sessions in Edmonton, expanding her scope to address menstrual hygiene for individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ or are experiencing homelessness. We’ve seen her tenacity to succeed and know she’ll continue to make a positive impact with this project.
