ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the Principal As the University of Alberta’s Peter Lougheed Leadership College (PLLC) graduates its second class, I find it hard to believe it was just four years ago that I arrived as its founding principal. It has been a joy working with viceprincipal Martin Ferguson-Pell to take a visionary idea and turn it into a successful program for our students. From the very beginning, PLLC has been a collaborative effort. In the early months of our work, Martin and I met with more than 100 faculty, staff, community and student leaders. Our director of instruction, Dr. Cristina Stasia, exceeded our expectations with her imaginative approach to training and managing our teaching fellows. Once we enrolled our first class in the fall of 2015, our students also became our collaborators, giving us feedback and opening up new possibilities.

CONNECT We have continued to reach out to communities on campus and beyond through our cocurricular programming, our mentorship program and our Stretch Experiences. By the end of this summer, PLLC scholars will have provided more than 33,000 hours of community service across the planet since the program’s inception. These are remarkable and inspiring achievements in such a short time. Lougheed College Lectures continue to engage both our students and the public. More than 100 campus and community guests, along with our livestream audience, share each lecture. Their engagement speaks to the enthusiasm that exists for the topics and quality of our presenters. GROW The cornerstone of the college has been the Certificate in Interdisciplinary Leadership Studies, comprising four courses taken over two years. We are fortunate to have strong links to our four host faculties (Arts, Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences [ALES]; Business and Science), which have provided outstanding lead instructors to facilitate these courses. Interdisciplinary teaching is difficult to design and deliver in a co-ordinated certificate; however, we believe this approach expands students’ perspectives because it exposes them to different ways of thinking. Thanks to our forum model, both our undergraduate scholars and our teaching fellows engage in a variety of experiential learning, professional development and simulation activities that
widen their horizons and prepare them to be life-ready. LEAD I have loved watching our wonderfully diverse scholars bloom and grow; some have already achieved important recognition! We have now graduated two Rhodes Scholars, helped prepare numerous successful medical-school and law-school applicants and positioned onethird of the next Students’ Union executives— including SU president Reed Larsen—for success. Our varsity athletes bring another category of success. Our Inaugural Class Scholar Ed Ilnicki won the Canada West Athlete of the Year Award. These remarkable scholars have followed a path similar to Peter Lougheed’s when he was a student at the University of Alberta. As my term comes to an end, I look back with pride at the contributions so many have made to enable PLLC to be a model for interdisciplinary and diverse leadership. Particularly important has been our focus on service as we uphold Canada’s tradition of liberal democracy. Our success is thanks to the community, the Government of Alberta, our donors, faculty across campus and my remarkable colleagues in the college itself. Thank you all for what has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell, PC, CC, OBC, QC Founding Principal

Scholars celebrated their work with the community at the Vodcast Premier at Garneau Theatre.
Feature Projects Raising Awareness of Local Issues through Vodcasts The Vodcast (or video podcast) is a group project for Foundations of Leadership, a first-year course. This project challenges students to apply what they have learned about leadership to improve a situation in their communities. This year, topics addressed included access to menstrual products on campus and food availability and production. “Ultimately, changes in the direction of inclusivity will be made when consumers clearly demand them.” Forum 1C’s Vodcast addressed the difficulty individuals with dietary restrictions face when trying to purchase food. They created an app to categorize the choices available on campus. Encouraging Renewable Energy with the Capstone Leadership Project In their second year of PLLC, scholars take part in a Capstone Leadership Project through the Faculty of Science. This course challenges scholars to combine their scientific knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit to propose a sustainable business venture focused on renewable energy.

Stretch Experience A Stretch Experience is an intensive, self-directed project that puts scholars’ leadership skills into practice and takes them outside their comfort zones. After completing the required 200 hours in an environment that matches their personal career goals, students emerge with increased confidence, leaving a positive impact on their communities. Since the program started in 2015, scholars have donated more than 25,000 volunteer hours through their Stretch Experiences. Thanks to our donors, students received over $350,000 in funding to assist with the completion of their community projects. PLLC graduates to date
Faculty of Science student Sydney Hampshire took on a heritage project in Flagstaff County during her Stretch Experience. She published her work in a book, Heritage Barns of Flagstaff County, which she shared with community members at a book launch in Peter Lougheed Hall. She’s pictured here with Mentor Team member Heather Klimchuk. Ed Ilnicki, an Alberta School of Business graduate, shared his leadership skills on the Golden Bears’ football field—like Peter Lougheed himself! When asked about his experience in PLLC, he said, “I firmly believe that better ideas come from teams that are as diverse as possible, and I cherish the relationships I was able to form with the people I met through [this] program.” Our first Rhodes Scholar, Yasmin Rafiei, has now completed one year at Oxford studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Venture Healthcare, the program she started during her Stretch Experience to encourage diversity in medical school applicants, is being continued this summer by PLLC Scholar Pranamika Dutta. John Hampson, an Arts graduate who studied Political Science, used his Stretch Experience at Canada’s embassy in Qatar to land a career with Qatar Airways. He now practises what he learned at PLLC, explaining, “I’ve been able to bring a certain set of skills to the table when it comes time to debate issues and how we approach them, and I wouldn’t have got that had it not been for the Lougheed experience.” Photo credits from top to bottom: Flagstaff County, Don Voaklander/ Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics, Richard Siemens, May Lam
