A MESSAGE FROM

OUR FOUNDING PRINCIPAL What a pleasure it is to introduce the second Annual Report of the Peter Lougheed Leadership College (PLLC). The second year of the college’s operation added new challenges, most particularly, the tripling of the total number of scholars in the program and the simultaneous running of both years of the PLLC program. In my many meetings with members of our wider community, including employers and community leaders, it is clear that the need for our current generation of students to learn leadership skills in advance of their transition to their postuniversity lives has never been greater. The often sheltered and overly structured life of the modern undergraduate often does not leave room for experiential learning and learning from failure. The value of team-based, interdisciplinary learning, supported by challenging co-curricular experiences,

2

are striking a chord with both our scholars and their potential employers. This year marked the first iteration of the second year courses: Workshops in Leadership and Capstone Projects, led by Dr. Richard Field and Dr. Margaret Ann Armour respectively. We are committed to ongoing rigorous evaluation of PLLC and a number of important activities addressed this priority this year. We engaged Banister Research to conduct evaluations of both our Mentor Team activities and the Stretch Experiences. Additionally, President David Turpin commissioned Dr. Peter MacKinnon, former President of the University of Saskatchewan, to conduct an external review of the college from the perspective of its place within the University and its financial sustainability. The College commissioned Dr. Paula Cordeiro, Dammayer Distinguished Professor of Leadership and Education at the

University of San Diego, to review our program in the context of leadership training experiences for undergraduates across North America. These reviews have provided valuable insights, which will guide the refinement and development of PLLC programs further. They have also affirmed that PLLC is highly innovative and effective in providing excellent academic, experiential training for both undergraduates and for our graduate teaching fellows. Many people deserve thanks for helping PLLC to be a success and you will meet them throughout this report. What unites our faculty, Teaching Fellows, administrative staff and Mentor Team members is a shared devotion to the mission of PLLC. I would be remiss if I did not express our special thanks to President David Turpin, whose unwavering support for PLLC was reflected in his recognition of the program in his strategic plan for the University.

We will continue to work towards realizing that vision for our students and for the public good. A final highlight of the year was the official opening of Peter Lougheed Hall. The opening of PLH gives us an opportunity to celebrate the vision for our college and to support the continued growth of PLLC. We would like to thank the Government of Alberta and all the private donors whose generosity and commitment to our future leaders have made PLLC possible. And now, onward to year three!

The Rt. Hon Kim Campbell, PC, CC, OBC, QC Founding Principal Peter Lougheed Leadership College

WHO WE ARE Peter Lougheed's leadership as Premier of Alberta was distinguished by his conviction that Alberta, as a province and community of talented people, was ready to play a prominent role on the national and international stage. Before he became Premier Lougheed, he was Peter, a University of Alberta student. He played football and wrote about sports for the student newspaper. He was President of the Students' Union and hung out with his fraternity friends. Recognizing that the leaders of tomorrow are on the University of Alberta campus today, and inspired by Peter Lougheed's legacy, we established the Peter Lougheed Leadership College in 2015.

Forums

The PLLC student experience is unique on campus. At the beginning of the PLLC program, scholars are placed in diverse forums of 10-12 students. Each forum is led by one Teaching Fellow (TF). These small working groups provide valuable opportunities to deeply engage program content and offer a safe learning environment to explore the lessons and practice of leadership with an interdisciplinary group dynamic. The culture and bond created between scholars in their forums is a strong driver of student engagement and success in the program. Our scholars learn, succeed, fail and grow together.

YEAR

ONE INT D 301: FOUNDATIONS OF LEADERSHIP Hosted by the Faculty of Arts Rt. Hon Kim Campbell Foundations of Leadership is an introduction to the scholarly literature on the theory and practice of leadership. The course content draws from a broad range of disciplines, primarily in the humanities and social sciences. The course is delivered in a blended format and requires participation in both on-line discussion groups and on-campus seminars. Students are challenged to practice interdisciplinary teamwork via experiential learning activities in the seminars and via a term-long group project to create a video podcast (vodcast). This course has a strong focus on writing using both traditional assignments and social media.

INT D 306: TOPICS IN LEADERSHIP Hosted by the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences Dr. Rhonda Breitkreuz Topics in Leadership is designed to share the successes, challenges and address leadership through the lived-experience of challenges and successes. Local, national and international leaders with a wide range of expertise in academia, business, government, volunteer, cultural and non-profit sector. Lectures are followed by robust seminar discussions in forums which provide scholars with an opportunity to discuss the lectures and explore leadership through real case studies.

VODCAST Each PLLC forum is required to produce a vodcast that addresses a social issue and provides a tangible solution to a need they have identified in the community. Through this project, scholars hone skills in community engagement, team-work and problem-solving. This year we had eight vodcasts produced on topics such as suicide prevention on campus, stem cell donation and the challenges of being a student parent. 10

YEAR

TWO This year we were excited to introduce the second year courses:

INT D 406: CAPSTONE LEADERSHIP PROJECT Hosted by the Faculty of Science Dr. Margaret-Ann Armour The Capstone Leadership Course is designed to empower scholars in their understanding and application of scientific research to decision making. Using scientific methods, scholars learn to evaluate different scientific approaches to a specific issue. In turn, they are able to demonstrate the relevance of scientific research to current environmental issues while gaining entrepreneurial experience in proposal writing.

INT D 407: WORKSHOPS IN LEADERSHIP Hosted by the Alberta School of Business Dr. Richard Field Scholars read articles, cases and textbook chapters, and view selected videos before class. Then, they engage in class with the instructor, guests and each other to develop an understanding of the skills that leaders need and to practice those skills. These skills are developed in understanding and influencing others, strategy, leading creative teams and leader communications including crises, symbolic and ceremonial speech and the media.

INTEGRATION A core aspect of the academic experience of the PLLC curriculum is an interdisciplinary approach to coursework. PLLC courses are designed to incorporate common themes and principles across not only individual courses, but academic years in the program. This approach ensures scholars have full opportunity to delve deeply into the subject matter and apply themselves individually and in group work.

OBJECTIVES The Stretch Experience is a self-directed leadership project that is designed by each Peter Lougheed Leadership Scholar. The Stretch Experience takes place from May-August between Year 1 and Year 2 of the program. In 2016, a new proposal process, which incorporated feedback from the Banister Review, was introduced. The Stretch Experience: • enables the scholar to practice the leadership skills learned in the first year. • supports the scholar’s “personal strategy”and helps fill gaps or highlight strengths to support applications for career and/or academic opportunities. • creates a new experience in that the role, community and context will be unfamiliar and very different from previous roles the scholar has held and community/contexts in which the scholar has been active. • stretches the scholar beyond their “comfort zone”. • creates opportunity to provide significant social benefit through service to the community in which the scholar is involved.

Despite these challenges, these are experiences I will carry with me for a lifetime. I will learn things here that I would never be able to learn back in the comfort of home, and the personal growth I am experiencing is invaluable. -Isabella De Goeij; 2016 scholar

PROPOSAL PROCESS PROPOSAL

All scholars are required to submit a written proposal outlining their experience.

REVIEW

Proposals are reviewed to ensure they meet the requirements and to suggest revisions.

PRACTICE PITCH

Scholars are required to develop a pitch and have the opportunity to practice in front of peers.

CO-CURRICULAR

PROGRAMMING LEADERSHIP IN PRACTICE The PLLC learning experience is enhanced by workshops, panel discussions and the Stretch Experience in the summer between the two years of the program. The co-curricular program is intended to enhance the experiential focus of PLLC’s learning and to support scholars as they begin the transition from their undergraduate academic perspective to the next stage in their career or graduate/professional training.

VALUES-BASED LEARNING

IDENTIFYING & PREVENTING SEXUAL VIOLENCE

This year the PLLC introduced two mandatory co-curricular workshops focused around the topics of student mental health and sexual violence. Inspired by the 2015-17 class' vodcast assignments, scholars requested that all PLLC scholars receive training on how to discuss and handle situations around these issues. This training was implemented to ensure that students are aware and engaged in these difficult issues both on and off-campus, and able to contribute positively to finding solutions. We would like to thank the University of Alberta's Peer Support Centre and Sexual Assault Centre for providing volunteers and facilitating these sessions. THANK YOU TO OUR FACILITATORS

TEACHING FELLOW

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

PROF. JAN SELMAN TEACHING IMPROV IN THE CLASSROOM One of the unique features of the Peter Lougheed Leadership College is the synergy between the undergraduate interdisciplinary team-based, experiential learning model and opportunities for teacher training and professional development for graduate students across all disciplines.

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

As Dr. Paula Cordeiro highlights in her academic review of PLLC, the College has been able to create a carefully integrated academic program rather than “a smorgasbord approach of course selections” that often typifies interdisciplinary certificates.

• An engineering student successfully facilitated the women’s caucus for Engineers Without Borders. She was subsequently asked to continue working with them.

All PLLC scholars have the same basic academic training (they take the same courses), but the learning experience is strongly modulated by the interdisciplinary perspectives brought to the classes by our highly-trained graduate and law teaching fellows.

16

• A law student will be serving as team lead for the Faculty of Law's Social Media Project with the Truth & Reconciliation Commission as its theme.

• An arts student presented to the Canadian Federation of University Women. • A business student developed PLLC’s leadership assessment/rubric and presented at the Festival of Teaching. She is currently preparing her research for publication.

It's not just teaching leadership... it's living it! It is increasingly recognized that graduate training needs to prepare students for diverse professional roles rather than simply preparing for a traditional academic career. PLLC recognizes the importance of both teacher training and professional development for graduate and professional students. Teacher training is delivered via an intensive three-week summer training program, which includes skill-building workshops such as: • Facilitating Discussion • Classroom Management • Supporting Students in Crisis as well as regular meetings with course lead instructors throughout the academic year. In order to prepare the Teaching Fellows for the transition from academia to their careers, professional development sessions are held monthly, including Interdisciplinary Project Management and Navigating Imposter Phenomenon.

LEADING BY

EXAMPLE

In support of our mandate to contribute to the broader community, the PLLC has made public engagement a priority.

LOUGHEED COLLEGE LECTURES As a member of the University of Alberta community, PLLC is committed to ensuring our lessons in leadership are also accessible to the broader public. The Lougheed College Lectures Series provides valuable opportunities to engage the public in conversations about challenging social issues and leadership topics in collaboration with Executive Education.

InterD CONFERENCE Interdisciplinarity is core at the PLLC program. As such, PLLC was pleased to support an InterD Conference, an initiative of the Students' Union and Office of the Provost, by providing a panel of speakers of Teaching Fellows. The TFs provided insights on the practice and value of interdisciplinary learning.

REFERATORY ON LEADERSHIP As a student-led initiative, PLLC scholars have developed an online reference catalogue of leadership resources for students including articles, books, videos and podcasts. Ongoing discussions with U of A Libraries will ensure this resource is expanded to all students at the U of A.

ALBERTA STUDENT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT In the past year, PLLC was pleased to continue to support the U of A Students' Union through sponsorship of the Alberta Student Leadership Summit by providing staff support on the planning team. This two-day on-campus conference provided an opportunity to engage students around the theme of "Harnessing Courage" in order to unlock their leadership potential.

WORDS MATTER In response to a number of evolving questions about the ethics and sustainability of journalism, PLLC hosted a public event featuring a panel of emerging and established media professionals. The panel engaged over 200 students and members of the public around difficult questions related to truth and the media. 18

PROGRAM

EVALUATION In an effort to ensure that PLLC is responsive to the needs of students and operates effectively within the broader University of Alberta community, PLLC participated in several reviews of our program and curriculum. These reviews, in conjunction with our internal processes for regular student engagement and consultation, have provided constructive insights to guide the growth of the College over the coming years. The feedback captured in these reviews will ensure that we can continue to support our students and Teaching Fellows with accountability and transparency in the delivery of programs and our decision-making processes.

MACKINNON REVIEW Dr. Peter MacKinnon Highly respected Canadian academic leader and former President of the University of Saskatchewan

In October 2016, President Turpin commissioned an independent in-depth review of PLLC. Dr. Peter MacKinnon participated in 25 meetings involving 67 participants and received telephone and email submissions from a number of individuals involved in the PLLC. STRENGTHS • PLLC's compelling vision and potential for further alignment with the U of A’s strategic plan for 2016-2021. • Considerable progress in implementing the College’s vision, and a commitment and palpable esprit de corps within the college. AREAS OF CONCERN • PLLC’s short and long-term financial sustainability. • The role of the PLLC in relation to Peter Lougheed Hall. • A perceived lack of equity in the college in the wider U of A community. SUGGESTED ACTIONS • More equitable sharing of expenditures between the U of A and The Banff Centre. • Consideration be given to the redistribution of students’ stretch awards to provide credit towards residence costs in Peter Lougheed Hall.

CORDEIRO REVIEW Dr. Paula Cordeiro Dammeyer Distinguished Professor of Global Leadership and Education at the University of San Diego (Irvine)

20

The PLLC also sought guidance from the International Leadership Association to independently assess the quality of PLLC’s academic curriculum. Dr. Cordeiro was provided with all course materials associated with PLLC and every aspect of the PLLC learning management system, which included information about student assignments, student performance in the courses and content associated with the online modules. Dr. Cordeiro’s review was positive. Dr. Cordeiro noted that although PLLC is still in the very early stages of its development, the growth potential and success of the PLLC is undeniable. Specifically, Dr. Cordeiro identified the curriculum content as a strong component of the program, including the variety of student work and learning outcomes and the range of teaching methods employed.

BANISTER REVIEWS Banister Research & Consulting Inc. Banister Research is a medium-sized, Alberta-based, fullservice management consulting firm that services hundreds of clients across a variety of sectors

The PLLC commissioned a review of the co-curricular elements of the program. Banister Research & Consulting Inc. was contracted to conduct an assessment of The Stretch Experience and Mentor Program. PLLC chose to engage an external organization to conduct the review to reduce the chance of bias and to encourage respondents to be as honest as possible in their responses. Key findings and recommendations were: STRETCH EXPERIENCE • Provide more defined and rigorous proposal, review and documentation regarding The Stretch Experience. * Implementation of these recommendations has begun, including the addition of a pitch session and added requirements for student reporting throughout the summer. MENTOR TEAM • More opportunities for Mentor Team members and scholars to interact are needed to ensure scholars are able to reap the full potential of the mentorship component. • Pursue ways of increasing scholar and mentor attendance at events and increasing opportunities for the two parties to meet and interact. • Opportunities for future professional development should be offered, specifically with regards to leadership and mentorship training.

SCHOLAR TOWN HALLS & WORKING GROUPS

The working groups ensure regular contact between PLLC staff and faculty with the scholars. Each forum provides one representative from their forum to discuss the ongoing progress of the program. Once a semester, a facilitated town hall is held. The facilitators meet with the students in-camera first to discuss all concerns. A summary of issues and suggestions are then discussed with the PLLC leadership team.
