Norw egian histol'Y relates how internal dissension and unrest ren足 dered conditions in the country unsafe-how Astrid with her infant son, O l af Tryg\"asson, fled to Gardarike, Russia , where Olaf grew up.

After attaining mRnhood, he harried as Viking in France, G ermany and the Briti. l, Isles. In Seilly Islands h e was converted to Chris足 tianity tJ)' a hermit, and his marauding expeditions c eased.

After some ~"ears spent in England and Ireland, he set sail for Norway, fired by the report of the unpopularity of its ruler, Haakon .rarl.

Arriving in l\,Torway in the year of 995 . he was unanimously accepted as king, and at once set about the conversion of the country to Christian ity. He thus became Norwa~"s first Christ i an king.

The arrh'a l of Olaf Tr'ygyasson on Norw egian soil is for this r eason an epochal event in Norwegian history.

Founded on these facts. Bjornstjeme Bjornson w"ote his poem "Landkj ending" to the words of which Grieg has set his glo"';ous musica l composition.

It concerns Olaf' s voyage to Norway-his fatherland-the l and w hich he had not seen since he fled from it a s a ch ild, and which he now, at th e age of twenty -seven, was a bout to behold aga in , or r a ther actua ll y behold for the firs t time, The history tells h ow he kneeled in p,'ayer afte,' his s hips and army had landed. Grieg h as clot h ed the king's prayer. which constitutes the 1<010, in a vestme nt of sacred garb most profound. Finally th e chorus, as king's mighty host, intona.tes the prayer in unison.

DEN STORE HVIDE FLOK (THE VAST UNNUMBERED THRONG)

This beautiful poem was written by H"ns Adolph Brorson, an eminent di\'ine in the Danish church, who died in 1764. It lifts our thoughts from earth, and a rC\'elation, so to speak, is gh'en us of the Ransomed Host in Heaven. It Is a vast unnumbered throng, all robed in white "Like thousand mountain craigs of snow." There they are with their God and worship Him in one eternal Sabbath Day, 'mid all the angels' song of praise. This chorus as arranged by Grieg is an old folk tune and is parti c ularly a dapte d for religious services.

This song interpre t s the feelings of a yo ung man, wishing himself o ut on the great ocean with it s broad expanse, its billows below and the bl"e sky above. He would like to go as th e seagull , sailing over the wa tel's, care free a nd Cull of life.
