Singing, and then in partic ular male chorus si nging, hd a very broad p lace in the daily mu sica l life of th e cou ntry . Virtua lly every li ttl e c mmu nity has i singing societies which con tribu te mu ch toward) kee ping the h igh stand­ ard of patriot ism and love. Everybody take p,lrt and the great Sanger­ fests with massed churuses num bering 5000 to 6000 men are rea li t ies.

Immortal composers li ke Gr i g, Sin di ng, Sve ndse n, Ole Olsen, Kje rulf and numerou s others have given us ma le chorus compos itions of lasting beauty , c mposi t ions th at righ tfully belong amo ng the finest the wor ld has pro duced in th is form o f music.

The Norwegian sons and da ughters who have emigrated to America have brough t wit h them thi s great love for so ng and music, and have contributed h norably to make th is 10u ntry an outstanding musica l nat ion. For over sixty years Norwegian singing socie ties have ex isted on the Pacific Coast, and in 1902, chie fl y thr ugh the efforts of Mr. F. A. Tomte, Port land, Orego n, the Pac ific Coa~t Norwegi an Singers' Associ­ ation was organized in Seattle, Wa hington. The first officers were Joh n Norm an (Everett ), Preside nt ; A. J. Thuland (Seatt le), Secretary ; Dr. O. A. Loe (Seatt le), Treasurer, and Dr. Carl A. Sperat i, Director-in-Chief.

Th e Grand Chorus had a very successful concert tour of Norway in 1981. Reports from Norway show that our music touched the hearts of the people of Norway and the experience touched the heart of every singer. The entire forbund is very proud of this accomplishment. It is our fervent hope that each of you will enjoy this Sangerfest and concert.

The Normanna is fortu nate in having a Ladies Au xiliary that gives wond e rful support and enco uragement to the singers.

O akl and has hoste d four Sangerfests, 1950, 1965, 1974, 1978 and now is the pro ud host of the 75th Sa nge rfest.

The average membership has been thirty. It makes appe arances at many Bay Area churches and social funct ions.

THE NORWEGIAN MALE CHORUS OF LOS ANGELES was organized Jan. 1, 1920. The first great event sponsored by the Chorus was a IlSongfest" in which Norwegian, Swedish and Danish Choruses in Los Angeles and San Francisco participated under the direction of Axel Philstrom of San Francisco.

The Chorus joined the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Associa足 tion in 1927.

The Chorus has hosted three Sangerfests: 1948, 1956 and 1969.

PORTLAND

THE NORWEGIAN GLE E CLUB of Portland marks its 85th Anniversary this year. No other group of its kind can equal this length o f service to a community.

Many noted musical personalities have been directly or indirectl y connected with the endeavor.

Something new was added in 1965 and we believe it is a great addition to the Norwegian music possibilities in the City of Roses. The Nordic Choraliers organized only a few months ago. The ladies have assisted in several major programs under the direction of Robert McCoy. They have come a long way in a short time.

LUGN VILAR SJ0N: Now rests the sea among the mountains and fjords.

ASTRI MI ASTRI : A Norwegian folk song. A man sings of his former sweetheart and how well he remembers her.

AKJ0RE VATTEN-A KJ0RE VED: An old Norwegian folk song about hauling wood and water from the mountain.

BRUDERFERDEN I HARDANGER: Bridal procession on the Hardanger fjord with the church bell ringing in the background.

BARNDOMSMINNE: This is the national anthem of northern Norway.

When the people are away they dream of th e northern lights, beautiful fjords, and the midnight sun.

NOR(2)NNA FOLKET-KONGE-KVADET : Two royal brothers rule the country. One a restless warrior, the other a peace loving man .

The song depicts the glories of the Crusades. The ending is the praise to both brothers.

I MIDNATTSOLEN: In the midnight sun.

O LAV TRYGVASON: In a battle with the Danes, King Olav Trygvason of Norway lost his life.

EN GLAD TRA LL: A happy ditty about three maidens strolling down a country lane.

SOMARKVELD VED FJORDEN: Sunset by the fjord and seagulls soaring over the water.

LANDKJENNING: landsighting: One of the mightiest of male chorus songs tells the story of King Olav's dramatic return to his native Norway.

THE BELLINGHAM MALE CHORUS was organized in the spring of 1916 as the Norronna Singing Society with Selim Lindborg as the first director.

It was decided to extend an invitation to the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Association to hold the 11th annual Sangerfest in Bellingham, and it was accepted.

Since then it has held Sanger足 fests in 1923, 1935, 1955, 1966 and

1980.

Of the original members Emil Olsen is still active.

THE NORWEGIAN MALE CHOR US of Seattle was originally organized on Dec. 6, 1889, six months after the founding of the City of Seattle and three weeks after the State of Washington was admitted to the Union. It is the oldest acappella chorus in Seattle.

This Chorus has been the host of 11 Sangerfests and 4 Directors in chief.

It is a very active Chorus with 85 singers.

TH E NORMANNA MALE CHORUS of Tacoma had it's origin when eight Norwegians from Parkland, Washington, got together in October of 1888 and formed what was then known as ((Den Norske Sangforening".

Later, as the group grew in membership and moved to Normanna Hall in Tacoma, the name was changed to /I Normanna Male Chorus of Tacoma", and was incorporated under that name in 1922.

By 1954 we had a Chorus of 17 men that me t regu larly.

We beca me members of th e Pacifi c Coast No rwe gian Singers Association in 1958.

It was our pleasure to host th e 50th Sangerfest in 1959. Since then we have hosted Sa ngerfests in 1967, 1976 and 1983.

We are one of the first Chorus's to form the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Association.

We have hoste d the Sangerfests in 1903, 1912, 1922, 1933, 1942, 1949, 1958, 1968, 1977 and will host the 1985 Sangerfest.

For all our Brother Singers who have passed from our midst, we pause a moment to pay homage to their memory. Their short sojourn among us has made life brighter and happier for many and for this we are tha nkful. Their voices are now stilled and we no more have their cheerful songs and laughter with us.
