THE SECOND SEMESTER

The Second Semester will begin February 12th. New classes will be organized in the following subjects: English Grammar, English and American Literature, Geography, U. ·S. History, Physiology, Nor­ wegian, Reading, Orthography, Agriculture, Commercial Law, Book­ keeping, Rapid Calculations, Commercial Arithmetic, Solid Geometry, Composition and Letter ~rriting, Civics, Drawing, Bible, Penmanship, School Law and Theory and Practice, Algebr a, Shorthand, Type­ writing, Students who have finished the winter examinations in the public schools will here have an excellent opportunity to continue their work.

TO ALL FORMER STUDENTS OF THE PACIFIC LUTHERAN

ACADEMY

Three reunions have been held during the past three years. The fourth will be held on the 10th and 11th days of February. These reunions are in the nature of rallies, to which graduates, teachers, former and present students of the Academy, are cordially invited and welcomed.

It has been the aim to send a personal invitation to everyone who has been connected with the Academy, either as a teacher or student. But owing to removals, change of addre ss, or of name, it wil! be impossible to reach all in this way. ,Ve will, therefore, ask all former students who read these lines to pass the word along to other ex-students in their locality and urge them to come, whet.her they have received any personal invitation or not. In case you cannot be present here in person, mail us a card or a letter, giving your present address and occupation and such other facts as may be of interest to your friends here.

THE HURRICANE

As soon as possible after the reunion, a complete account of the same will appear in "The Hurricane," a paper published by the students of the Academy. This will be brimful of interesting matter and well worth the modest subscription price of 50 cents for the five remaining months of the present school-year.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you as young men and women who are seeking an education. I take it for granted that every one of you has an earnest desire to make the most of himself, to grow: physically, intellectually, spiritually, Now, at the very outset,

of it e ach day, at last it becomes so strong we cannot break it. A person who is ti e d down by bad habits is no longe r a free man. He is a slave, and th e habit is his master. There are habits of eating and drinking, s tudy ing a nd thinking, speaking and working, spelling and reading, a nd so on . H you have acquired any bad habits, do ,.II in YOUI' power to ge t rid 0 1 them now, while you are young, for I can assure you that the tas k wiII grow infinitely harder as the years go by.

Again, if you want to grow in th e right direction, you should try to become co nscious of yo ur responsibility to God . Your life is not your own, YOUI' tal e nts are not your own, your time is not your own.

They are God's, g iven to you for a time, to keep and to im':>I'Ove. 1f vou therefore w is h to develop in the right line, try to drop out of ;'ou~ vocabnl~ry tha t li ttle word "mine" and substitute the word "thilHl." Learn to th in k and fe e l and pray and act "Thy will be done."

To do this you mn st fi nd ont what God's will is, what he wants to have yon do, a nd wh en you have found it out, do it. Begin with the littl e things of YOUI' daily li fe , th e trifles. Don't wait till what you consider great duties hav e come be for e you . All duties are great. I have very little faith in a ]J I'SOIl 'S finding ont th e will of God in what he calls g rea t th ings, if lle is ca reless of the known will of God in little thin gs . I wish to call your attention to some of the conditions of true growth and development, true education.

In the first place, you w1l\ grow and develop only so long as you recognize your own ignorance. The moment you reach a pOint where you think you are wi::;e enough, or good enough, where you think you lwow all that is worth knowing in a certain line, you w!ll cease to learn, cease to grow in that line, your development, your educatioll, will at that very moment come to a stand·still. But it will not long remain at a standstill. It will go backwal·d. For education always means progress in knowledge. It is, therefore, of the highest import­ anc e that you should begin the new school-year, realizing as clearly as possible that there are a great many things worth knowing that you do not yet know.

But this does not mean that you should try to learn at once every­ thing that you don 't know. That is a temptation which often gets the bettpr of many young people, when ti;Iey enter school. They realize their own ignorance, they see about them a great many oppor­ tunities to learn, and they feel like grasping them all at once. But this can't be done. Growth takes time. You can't eat enough in a day or a week to last you a year. That is one of the limitations of your being. Neither can you take a great many subjects at the same time and do justice to them all. Some years ago a young man, afte,­ looking over our program, told me, that he had made a selectioll (;[ the branches he wished to study that year. I looked over his list, and found that he had selected thirty-five, and he was no fool either.

After talking it over, he found it advisable to narrow it down to five or six. You will also find it to your ad\'antage to take a few branches and to learn these well. Mastery of a few things is better than a half knowledge of many. Half knowledge means doubt and uncer­ tainty, and there is nothing as fatal to development as doubt. No man ever grew strong on doubts. Nobody ever became wise on un­ certainties. Doubts are killing. Don·t. entertain them. If you have them, get rid of them as soon as you can; at any rate, don't let them pOison the lives of others. But aim to get certainty-in history, in science, in grammar, in religion, in everything. But in order to attain this, you must learn to think independently ; and for this reason , some one has defin ed a scholar as a "man who thinks." In your reading, then , don't swallow things whole, don 't always take things for grant­ ed; but weigh and consider what you hear and read, and then mal,e it your own.

Again, if you wish to develop in th e right direction, look to your babits. You , of course, hav e some of them, either good or bad. The good ones are friends that will help Y011 in your life-work. They wlll smoothen your path and lighten your load. Bad habits are enemip::; that will attack you in trouble, drain your strength, and hinder your progress.
