Introductory Remarks HISTORICAL SKETCH The Pacific Luth.eran Academy at Parkland, 'Vasl1., was established by members of the Norw.

Ev. Luth. Synod of America. It began its work in 1894 and continued until 1918, the last year in conjunction with the Columbia College at Ev­ erett. In its field it ranked as one of the best in the state.

The Columbia Lutheran College was built at Everett, ·Wash., by members of the United Norw. Luth. Church of America. It opened its doors for pupils in 1 909, and continued its work until the spring of 1919. From 1911 it was under the direct management of the United Church.

In 1919 th scbools were closed to pupils. and tl e consolidated school, The Pacific Luther­ an College, which is located at Parkland, \-Vash., began its prepara tion for taking up the work under the new auspices. Durinc5 the summer of 1920 the main building was thoroughly renova­ ted, and a chapel was built. On Oct. L1, 1920, eg istration began, and the new school took up its life work. '

In 1921 lhe Junior College and Normal de­ partments were e ·tablishe , 'nd .in 1925 the Normal department was accredited by the State Board of Education.

In 1927 the school was duly a pproved by the Secretary of Labor as an institution of earning for immigrant stude ls, in accordance with the Immigration A t of 1924.

LOCATION Parkland is a suhurh of Tacoma. Its name i ndicates the nature of its scenery. To the west lie the broken, rugged, snow-capped Olympic Mountains; to the east and south stretch the Cascade Mountains with their wooded foothills and the towering peaks. Here, serene and ma足 jestic, rises the snowy dome of l\It. Tacoma, the heavenward pointing, nourishing mother-a vi足 sion not to he forgotten, never the same, always sublime, wh the r ero Nned by a s torm cap of cl ud/i, or roseate with the glow of m orning, or ), .. white under the hlaze of day, still and milb or tinted by the setting sun .

ILDINGS

The buildings are furnished with light and water from the city, but our own systems may be used whenever a n ecessi ty arises.

THE M IN nUILDING.-This is a massive five-story structure of brick, 190x 2. It has been thoroughly renovated.

In the basement are lo足 cated the heating sy tern, the kitchen, dining room, the biologi al laboratory, e boys' show足 ers, the boys' hospital, and store rooms. The first floor contains all the offices, the reception room, the library and study hall, the physical labora足 tory, guest rooms, two class rooms, two suites for teachers and a girls' . ceptioll room .

On the second floor are four class rooms, the boys' clubroom and students' rooms, and on the third floor thirty-seven dormit ry rooms for boys and girls and the girls' hospit al rooms. On the fourth floor, out from the main buildi ng, is the chemical laboratory.

THE GYMNASIUM is a frame building on a concrete basement lOOx50 feet. The main floor has a fine I'D ning track, a l arge stage, dressing rooms, a m ving p'cture outfit and an open floor of 50x80 for games. The basemen t when fin足 ished will contain a s v'mming pool, 20x48, locker 1'0 illS and other facilities.

$7,000. It is a frame building, 40x60 feet, with a full concrete basement. The basement has an assembly room and a fully eql.lipped kitchen.

THE LIBRARY THE LIBRARY occupies two rooms on the first floor of the main bUilding. The school at present has a collection of over 8300 books and pamph1els, besides a quantity of unbound maga足 zines. The library fee 'is used for improving this part of our school equipment, aJld yearly above 100 volwnes are added through this channel.

The Chemical Lab r tory occupies a fire足 proof room aD the fourth floor. Thi l aboratory is fully equipped l teach high school chemistry as well as first and second year college! chemis足 try.

Accurate balances for quantiLative work have been installed; electric power for hot plates, drying ovens, etc., also up-to-date l aboratory desks with the necessary apparatus and chemi足 cals.

THE CAMPUS The College campus comprises about eigh足 teen acres, a fine play-ground for the pupils.

There are the baseball diamond, football field, two tennis courts (two more are being b uilt) and the croquet courts, offering facilities for outdoor exercise.

Of historical i nterest is the little Douglas fir southeast of the building, planted on the first Good Roads Day in the State of vVashington, and the stately maple at the front gate, named after the Rt. Rev. V. Koren.

LEGACIES AND GIFTS The College has received a number of gifts and bequests during the past years.

It would be well if the many friends of the College would remember the school in making their wiII or by special gifts. lVIr. and M1揃S. George Knutson, of Burling足 tOl1, \Vasll., in 1923 gave the school $1,000 in memory of th ir son Henry who attended the ollege in 1921-22.

The graduating class of 1925 presented four loving cups on which the names of a boy and a girl from the College-Normal sophomore class, and of a boy and a girl from the senior High School class respectively, who have been of the greatest inspiration to the school, will be en足 frayed.

The class of 1926 built a fine stone entrance to the College grounds.

Much time is spent on the period after the reconstruc­ tion, emphasis being placed on the political and industrial problems that have risen and have extended down to the present time. One semester is devoted to a careful study of our civil and political institutions. Efforts will be made to give the student a clear under­ standing of the constitution of our city govern­ ments.
