Rosemaling Symposium Last Summer, 2004, several of our Embla #2 Daughter~ of Norway members made a trip to Decorah, Iowa, to attend a special Rosemaling Symposium at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. Many of the special classes they attended were taught

by Sigmund Arrseth, a noted rosemaler from Valdres, Norway.

During a public demonstration of Rosemaled Wall Painting, with Norwegian folk music in the background, Sigmund Arrseth created a 4 foot by 8 foot rosemaled mural in 35 minutes. Our Embla #2 members who were present to witness this painting were Florence Buck, Nancy

Lopez, Ellen Campbell, Carol Voigt, Julie Hebert and Nina Kurrie from Ingeborg Lodge in Stanwood. A public auction was held to sell the large wall painting. Our Julie Hebert won the exciting auction and bought the expensive rosemaled wall mural. It resides in Julie's pretty home in Puyallup, Washington.

Julie invited and hosted a recent meeting of the Embla #2 Craft Committee. We enjoyed her refreshments and were delighted to view her very special and beautiful rosemaled wall mural. Julie invites any sister to visit her home and view the painting.

For several years of Embla s special Norwegian Days, we have relied on Janet Ruud or Harriet Swieso to make or direct the making of a special favorite, Rommegrot. Several Embla members decided it was time to have a serious cooking class and educate new additional Rommegrot cooks. Chris Engstrom volunteered her kitchen and Harriet agreed to be our counselor, advisor and excellent Rommegrot instructor.

On June 17, 2005 at 10:00 am, let it be known - that Marilyn Mahnke, Carol Spencer, Ellen Campbell and Delphine Johnson gathered with Chris in her kitchen and made our magic creation of delicious Rommegrot under the careful eye of Harriet Swieso! Result: Delicious Rommegrot which we served on our Sankt Hans Fest Boat Trip to Poulsbo the very next day.

SANKT HANS FEST Aboard "My Girl" June 18, 2005

The Norwegian Flag was beautiful off the bow of the ship

Members , families and friends boarded My Girl in Tacoma for a cruise up and back to Poulsbo to celebrate the annual Sankt Hans Fest. It was a beautiful day so some were able to sit outside.

Members were busy in the galley making sure everyone had plenty of snacks. Other members, Esther Van Noy, Karen Wasley and friend Ted, were making open faced sandwiches.

Janet Ruud and Marilyn Mahnke stirred the traditional R0mmegn~t. These items were served before we reached Poulsbo. Upon arrival everyone went ashore to buy Scandinavian items in the various stores or just browsed and admired the decorated quaint town.

On our return Janet Ruud had a lot of Lena and Ole jokes up her sleeve keeping everyone laughing. Captain Paul Stanfill pointed out some of the towns and points of interest that we were passing along the way. The traditional strawberry shortcake was served by Karen Bell and Karen Kunkle and enjoyed by all. Chris

Esther Van Noy purchased the bread and other sandwich ingredients which she prepared.

Our President, Delphine Johnson, brought two large containers of fresh strawberries as well as the Cool Whip. The Strawberry Shortcake sure was good.

Throughout history, a few select honorees have been recognized for their tireless efforts toward peace. Upon the occasion of the l00 1h anniversary of Norway's peaceful separation from Sweden, we are pleased to be awarding the Greater Tacoma Peace Prize here this evening. The brainchild of Thomas Heavey, this Peace Prize is a gift from the Norwegian-American community.

GTPP Committee members were appointed in January of this year by Norden Lodge #2-Sons of Norway, Embla Lodge #2-Daughters of Norway, and Pacific Lutheran University. Selected volunteers who served on the Greater Tacoma Peace Prize Committee were: Thomas Heavey Carol Baarsma Claudia Berguson Lisa Marie Ottoson Janet Ruud Andreas Udbye

We are pleased to announce that the 2005 Greater Tacoma Peace Prize recipient is George F. Russell, Jr. Mr. Russell was nominated by Karin Moye Kelley, of Bates Technical College, for his work in the realm of peace education, security and peace awareness both regionally and globally. While his success in the investment field is no secret, his calling to spend the rest of his life dedicated to peace endeavors is far less public.

He has been called a visionary, in that he sees time not in terms of months or years, but in generations and centuries. His "hands-on" efforts in the arena of peace work have touched lives in our own neighborhoods and in countries around the world. Just a few examples of his work include the following:

The Greater Tacoma Peace Prize is awarded to an individual, group or organization in the Greater Tacoma area, regardless of nationality, race, religion or ideology.

The purpose of this award is to recognize, honor and encourage peace building, education and awareness in our own communiti and fir-beyond.

• Hate Free Zone, Seattle-piloting a high school curriculum on promoting peace and understanding following September 11th.

Area citizens and organizations nominated an impressive list of candidates! • National Bureau of Asian Research-committed to promoting effective and far-sighted policy in the United States, throughout Asia and in Russia.

• East West Institute-various projects promoting democracy, government transparency and related peace issues in the former Soviet Union.

Through research support and meeting with political leaders around the world, his work will undoubtedly have a positive impact on families and communities for generations to come.

This was our theme for Embla #2 Summer Luncheon held in the Scandinavian Cultural Center at PLU. Eighty three members and bouests boathered to celebrate the Centennial Year of Norway's independence.

Our special music program was presented by Jon Malmin, Director of the Normanna Men's Chorus and his lovely wife, Jean Malmin. Jon Malmin sang several Norwegian songs in Norwegian and English, and his wife, Jean, joined him in singing duets. We all enjoyed Jon Malmin directing all of us singing some of our favorite Norwegian songs in Norwegian and English! We appreciated the Malmins taking time to give us a program during their busy summer!

Special recognition roses were oiven to Ruth Foster, 93 years, and b Mary Hudina, 95 years, our two oldest members; to June Radich with the longest years of membership - 72 in Embla #2; Grace Bredeson, the grandma with the youngest grandchild in attendance; Lori Kase the newest Embla member - July 05; and Heather Dildine, the youngest Embla member present - 20 years old.

Janet Ruud, a past Embla President, presented a historical summary about this Centennial Year (1905-2005), 100 years since Norway gained independence from Sweden.

Embla Secretary, Lisa Ottoson, had a wonderful large map of Norway on an easel for each of us to locate and pin where our relatives live or emigrated from to the United States.

The tables looked elegant with red roses in silver containers set on glass mirrors. Each person's favor was a silk Norwegian flag on a small stand to remember this special Centennial Year! Our luncheon menu was a meatball dinner complete with lingonberries.

by Harriet Swieso What a wonderful time was had at my home, when three grandaughters, Peggy, Kirsten and Jeana wanted to learn to make Christmas cookies. My daughter, Janine, and daughter-in-law, Mary, were here also.

Hardanger Lefse was first on the list. It was said "Grandma, we didn't know you put brandy in the lefse," They made and baked them with grandma's instructions.

Fattigman was nest. There was a lot of rolling and cutting before deep frying them. A few fingers were burned, but we just laughed it off.

Then came the Berliner Kranser. They really did a lot of rolling and dipping the dough in egg whites and then crushed sugar.

After five hours of baking we called it a day. More days will come as they learn to make other cookies and pastry.

What a joyous occasion to be together and learning a part of their heritage.

The Tacoma Symphony presents a Scandinavian Smorgasbord, works by several Scandinavian composers, and features guest artist Marie Birve, Swedish soprano.

The Scandinavian Cultural Center has arranged for a block of 25 excellent seats at a 20% discount. The price of $32 (regular price $40) includes a backstage tour and private reception.
