We are almost sold out of the second batch of tickets, but plan to reorder in the fall. .. so please, if you are planning to wash your car any time soon, give Carlene a call (253752-6080). I will arrange to get tickets to you, or simply wait until September and start the fall out right with a sparkling clean vehicle.

Message

President's Message It is hard to believe we are already in the seventh month of 2016. I guess time flies by when you are having fun.

Sankthansaften (St. Hans Day) was celebrated at the June meeting. This "Midsummer" celebration is sometimes called "Jonsok:' which is thought to be the birthday of Johannes the Baptist. "Jon" comes from "Johannes" and ending "ok" is a derivative of "Jonsvaka", meaning the church would lie awake the night before, awaiting Jon's birth. Our cultural program was the Sonora Women's Choir and the Sonora Scandinavian Children's Choir singing a variety of Nordic pieces directed by Jeremy Shilley. (See photos on the next page.) The Children's Choir is recruiting children ages 5 - U years old of all ethnicities and skill levels. It was founded in partnership with the Scandinavian Cultural Center with the hope of passing the Scandinavian music traditions on to the next generation. We also enjoyed a wonderful buffet of open-faced sandwiches and salads with a special treat of r(l)mmegr(l)t (thank you Karen Bell) and traditional strawberry shortcake with our wonderful local strawberries being available this year.

Speaking of "fun" the Norske Bunkofest was a fun time of rolling the dice and tossing the "Bunko dice". Since the weather was not conducive to an outside party this year we had to have the party in the garage. Everyone had a great time competing to be the winner of each of the 24 games. The hardest part of the game is keeping score. Since you change partners 24 times throughout the evening it is a great way to get to know each other. The big winners for the night were Karen Bell, Joel Carbone, Gerd Spencer, Janice Kelly, Karen Kunkle, Mardy Fairchild and Carlene Garnerwinning either first through fourth or last place, most "Bunkos rolled", or the lucky one with the "Bunko dice" at the end of the last game. TUSEN TAKK to everyone who attended. Over $400.00 from the party will be added to Embla's Convention Fund . By the way, everyone was having so much fun, nobody took any pictures!!

I hope to see you at the Summer Luncheon "Not Your Grandmother's Norway!" on Saturday, July 9, at the Scandinavian Cultural Center. We are privileged to ~ave Kim Nesselquist, Consul of Norway, as the guest speaker.

Our September 1 meeting is our annual auction so remember to bring items to selrwith the proceeds to go to Embla.

We are also having a garage sale at Bethlehem Lutheran on September 2 and 3, with the proceeds of this sale to go to the 2018 convention fund. Donation~. of garage sale items are needed for this event to be a success. Great opportunity to rid your closets of no longer needed items!

Jeremy Shilley, director of the two choirs, was himself once a member of a Norwegian children's choir, the Barnekor.

Our program in June was the Sonoro Scandinavian Children's Choir and Women's Choir.

The Sonoro kids sang Smd grodorna, a Swedish song about frogs (who don't have tails) - and pigs (who do)!

The Sonoro Women's Choir sang a beautiful rendition of "Shenandoah."

We need over 450 dozen cookies and at least 200 packages of lefse to sell at the Nordic Festival. In 2015 we were out of cookies and lefse by 1:30 pm. The festival goes until 4 pm and we would like the cookies and lefse to last a little longer this year. We really need everyone's help. Bake Norwegian cookies at home, especially if you are not able to come to a baking day.

• Lefse baking day from 9 AM to 4 PM on August 17 and 19 at the Mountain View Community Center, 3607 122"d Ave E, Suite A, Edgewood WA 98372. (Mt. View Lutheran Church).

• Cookie baking day from 9 am to 4 P"} on Monday, October 3, and Tuesday, October 4, at PLU's Scandinavian Cultural Center.

• Bake Scandinavian cookies at home to be sold at the Nordic Festival. Bring them to the Embla's October 6th meeting or to the sec on Monday, October 3 or Tuesday, October 4. We really encourage you to bake cookies at home.

• Sell cookies. Shifts available are lOam to 12:00 noon, 12:00 noon to 2pm and 2pm to 4pm.

• Set up crew on Friday, October 7 from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Take down crew on Saturday, October 8 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

• Cafeteria table clean-up. Shifts avaifable are lOam to 12 noon, 12 noon to 2pm, 2pm to 4pm .

• Raffle table. Shifts available are lO~m to lpm and lpm to 3pm .

• Greeter on 2"d floor. Shifts available are lOam to 12 noon, 12 noon to 2pm and 2pm to 4pm .

Vonnie Stone

Vonnie, Mardy Fairchild's daughter, has been diagnosed with Central Serous Retinopathy, a leakage of fluid under the retina which causes visual impairment. The condition is exacerbated by stress.

Just tell someone!

The prognosis for CSR is good, while immediate vision loss is very poor (20/200 with "floaters" and a black spot in her central visual field). It is hoped that she will see noticeable improvement over the next 3-4 months and if not, there is prescription medication she can be given that could help, with laser surgery if all else fails. CSR can reoccur however.

One more thing -Vonnie's broken ankle is doing pretty well, although surgery for bone spurs may be required sometime in the future.

Vonnie -we are all thinking of you and hoping you will be able to find some time to heal, relax, and ... "chill out."

Karen Bell is healing from gall bladder surgery (May 30) .

Three days later she made r(l)mmegr(l)tfor our June meeting! That is true sisterly dedication to Embla ! TAKK!

Finishecl at last ...

Over the years, I have been buying bits and pieces at our November meeting sales table to put together a bunad for my niece Taylor Simmons.

(Her mother, Tammy Simmons, is a member of Hulda Garborg #49.) I now have all the pieces, including the shoes, and have been stitching and sewing, altering and fitting, and working my poor fingers to the bone.

But it's all been worth it, as you can see.

It is finished at last and just in time for convention. This will be Taylor's first convention and the first opportunity to "show-off' her Norwegian heritage in style.

Syttenc/e M4iin Seabrook On May 14, Julie, Scott, and Valentine Touchette marched in the Syttende Mai parade in Seabrook, Washington (north of Ocean Shores). The short pa rade is a yearly Seabrook community tradition. Approximately 40 people walked or rode bikes beginning in front of the historical Dorothy Anderson cabin and ending at the Salty Dog boutique dog store with free ice cream for everyone!

Cooking Classes Well, ladies, the only thing I have on the Cooking Classes is this: Please come to our wonderful Embla cooking classes at PLU in the Scandinavian Cultural Center this fall. The dates are: Tuesday, October 11; Monday, October 24, and Monday, October 31. Yes, the last cooking class is on Halloween, so maybe we will come in costumes as we demonstrate our delicious Norwegian recipes once again.
