A n Example of Inter8l1n,otlical Cooperation

REV. N. WILLIAM ANDERSON

H. L. FOSS

PreriJmt, Columbia Conference of the Luther<1fl Augu!t<1fla Synod of North America

Presidrnt of the Pacific District of the N. L. C. A.

Education must prepare young people to cope with real and vexing problems. There fore it must be based on s... mething higher than man's own philosophy of life; the Eternal Truth. as revealed in the Word of God. This fact the world must learn to appreciate more keen ly. The truly Spiritual must be g i v en i t s rightful place in the hearts and minds of men.

This our Christian schools emphasize as the basis for a truly u s e f u l l i f e . T he Church, conscious of its duty, leeks to do all within its power that God's ideal, the Chrisrian Citizen, may glorify Him.

Into the columns of your Saga are being writren the reminiscenceS, dreams, hopes, aims, and purposes of youthful ambition. Each year the Saga tells the story of worthy achievement. At Pacific Lutheran College you are building for the future in the land of the future. Education, under Christian. guidance and inJlu ence, is laying deep your foundation for life. Every well learn ed, each opportunity improved upon. This is worthy achievement. Your fo r m e r Sa g a writers are still writ ing. We meet them in all walks of life. We also need you in the fields of life and of the Church in our Pa cific District. Write your Saga well!

The leaven of church-school-tramed lay leaders in congregations of the Pacific District of the Norwegian Luthern Church of America has been the object of non-malicious envy on the part of other Lutherans of the Pacific Northwest. That our cooperation in the maintenance of Pacific Lutheran CoUege migt gradually supply the Northwestern District with such leadership is the hope of the American Lutheran Church. We have come to realize that only by a gradual process can a school, founded and nurtured by one church body, gain me loyal support of the rank and tile of another group. But an ever-growing proportion of the clergy and laity of the Northwestern District regard Pacific Luthern College as their own institution. That this sentiment may grow in his own and other cooperating church bodies and may express itself in terms of student attendance, curnt support and capital investment, as well as in greater Lutheran solidarity in general, is the sincere wi.dt of L. LUDWIG, Presidenr Northwestern District, American Lutheran Chrlrch.

ITH A SPIRIT of whole-hearted co-operation and leadership, the graduating class, consisting of second-year Liberal Arts students and third-year Normal students, climaxed a successful and inspiring sojourn at Pacific Lutheran College. The clus organized in the fall, with Professor Philip E. Hauge unanimously chosen as advisor, and the following officers elected from the two divisions: Frithjof Tayet, president; Jean-Marie Fowler, vice president; Marie Johnson, secretary; and John Stuen, treasurer. The members of the class immediately entered into a year of activity and school life. For the first time in the history of the College, the girls added an extra-curricular activity to its many others under the name of the "Personality Club." Its purpose is to develop and cultivate the be9t personal traits among its members and the school at large. During the first semester, the ITItmbers of the class participated in a theater party, after which they gathered at the home of Miss lone Madsen for an eventful evening of enter tainment and refreshments. In the late spring, a yacht cruise closed the class socia/life. Unde.r the direction of Mrs. Adah Dapper, the graduates presented the class play, "Once There Was a Princess" by Juliet Wilbur Tom pkin.s. TIle prologue, spoken in Italy, announces the setting of the play which is in America. The plot centers around the young prim:ess, Dellatorre, who, before coming to America, gave her wealth to the old princess, Dellatorre. Disguised as a dressmaker, she comes to her relatives, who expecte d heT to be arrayed in princely pearls. Her intentions are to live a simple life away from the royal society. After some time, the fathe.r, Mr. Joe Boyd, finds out that she is really the princess they had been waiting for. He and the princess keep this a secret from the othl!r who would be disappointed in finding that she was only a dressmaker. Eventually me muts a country lad, falls in love, and is happily married. The graduating class, inspired with the principles and ideals of Pacific Lutheran College, is prepared to step out of this institution and enter its life wode, ever reflecting the true spirit of fellowship and progress attained while here.

as adviser and under the capable leadership of Ralph

Hutchison, president; Clifford Haugen, vice president; Frederika Schlanbusch,

secretary·treasurer, and Jack Wall, sergeant-at-anns, the High School completed its second successful year as

a

distinct organization.

Before Chrisnnas the High School deparnnent gave

a program in the Chapel which was considered one of the best of the year.

Among the social

activities the High School Studen will long remember the Theatre Party, and the party givn in honor of the basketball boys during the second semester. As the Senior Class of the High School is small, they have few sep.lrate activities but they parcicipate in many of both the High School and College

divisions.

However, two members

have supporting roles in the Senior Oass Play. For the first time in the history of the College, the class decided to have sweaters with the blue and silver class colors.

The olficers elected

for the year were; Harry McGxmick, president; Virginia Davis, vice prtliident; Betty Svare, secretary-treasurer, and Mr. Kieth Reid, adviser. The Higb School students have taken an active part in the Drama, French, and German Clubs, and Choir, as well as rendering valuable service on the staffs of the school's two puhli.ca nons. They have shown great skill in athletics.

A star of the varsity basketball team belongJ

to them and they also claim members of the golf team.

Debate

o

NeE AGAIN Pacific Lutheran College has been well represented to other institutions of higher education by the Debate team.

The debates were non-decision but the

members of the team have worked diligently that they might present and defend the question well. Debate is a leading activity in the school and the questions discussed are of such a nature as to prove beneficial to those who attend these debates_ Under the able coaching of Professor Pflueger, the debate squad er:ttered a successful season, discussing the question "That by a two-thirds majocity, Congress should have the power to override decisions of the supreme court which had declared an act of Congress un constitutional." In the first debate of the year Pacific Lutheran was host to the debate te'am from Aberdeen Junior College. The affirmative for Pacific lAltheran College was upheld by Delbert Bresemann and Fred Sutter, while GeO!:ge Brockway and Vern Knutzen debated the Aberdeen team for the negative. In the next meet Elizabeth Freis and Thelma DanUls met the affirmative team from em Universiry of Washington. Margaret RO!:em and Mary Madl1e exchanged a verbal battle with the University's negative team.

Following this debate Margaret Rorem, Mary MachIe, GeO!:ge Brockway and Vern Knutzen journeyed to Seattle College to debate. Miss Machle and Miss Rocem upheld the affirmative while Mr. Brockway and Mr. Knutzen debated on the negative. The last debate of the season was held at the University of Washington on April 7. Elizabeth Freis and George Brockway debated on the negative side and Delbert Breseman and Fred Sutter brooched the affirmative side of the question. May Pacific Lutheran College continue to stand with other colleges and Universities upon these questions of national and universal impoctance.

Drama Club Group One

T HE ACHIEVEMENTS of the Drama Club have been notable both artisticaUy and

financially. The large, appreciative audiences that witnessed the two one·act plays every month commented freely upon the ability of the characters of each cast. Honors for the successful year go to Mr. Keith Reid, the dub adviser, the officers, the group leaders, and the stage crew, as well as to the participants. Those leading the group in the fall semester were: president, lone Madsen, vice.president, Helen Lilja; secretary, Evelyn Eklund; trasurer, Alvttnn Arne ; and librarian, Louise Hend· ridcson. Group leaders who directed the plays were: Margaret Craft, Robert Monson, Evelyn Eklund, and Paul Armstrong. These were assisted by Edward Svinth, Valborg Norby, Marie Hagenoe:ss, and Eline Benson. Those officiating during the spring semester were: president, Robert Monson; vice· president, Edward Svinth; secretary, Helen Scott; treasurer, Ruth Sollie; and librarian, Novelle NageL The group leaders were Rolph Bolstad, Wadene Calavan, and Helen Lilja; and their assistants were Louise Hendrickson, Arthur Haavik, and Joseph Running. Raymond Reid served as stage manager the entire year. Those assisting him were Henry Olson, Alvfi.nn Arne, George Knutsen, and John Dagsland. These boys are deserving of further mention, because of their added responsibilities and unique workmanship. During

Drama Club Group Two the first semester they undertook the task of remodeling; the stage properties, by first con structing a new set which could be easily interchanged ; and later by constructing new and more e fficient lighting facilities, such as two new spot lights, foot· lights, and accessories . These revised and additional improvements added greatly to the ultimate success of the different plays.

A welcome speaker appearing before the Drama Club was Mrs. Julia Todd Hallen. In her delightfully humorous and instructive talk, she di.scussed "\X1hat the play says about the audience." This was the first night meeting of the Cub, and was well received by t:h.oee who attended. In February two royalty plays, "Knives of Syria," and "The Threshold," were presented to add variety to the type of plays which had previously been given.

As a final undertaking the ve rsatile group presented in the latter part of the year an operetta, "Joan of the Nancy Lee," which superseded the usual short one-act plays. This enabled the singers of the club to combine their musical and dramatical talent. Mr. Keith Reid, who has had much dramatical experience, directed the ope retta. The plays presented' during the year were : "The Marriage Proposal"; "Hot Biscuits"; "Gawky, Twelve and Freckled"; "Pin a Pin on Me"; "J USt Another Day"; "The Music Box"; "The Threshold"; "Knives of Syria"; "A Bargain's a Bargain"; "In Doubt About Daisy" ; and "While the Toast Burns."

SINCE irs organization, in

College Choir

1 927, by Prof. J . O. Edwards, the "Choir of the West" has slIng its way into the hearts of many. Although n , the choir maintains a prominent place at Pacific Lutheran College, and aids in crearing a spiritual atmosphere, as well as, in making known the name of the school in ever widening circles. With a membership of 52, the 1 9 3 5- 36 <1 c<1fJ<?II<1 choir mastered many new elections of which the following were widely commented upon: "0 Filii et Filiae" by Leisring ; "Christmas Lu llaby" y Mozart; "From Heaven Above" by F. M . Christiansen, director of Sr. Olaf Choir; "Ie's Me, 0 Lord" by Noble Cain; and "P aIm 2 3 " b the director, J. O. Edwards. Under the managership of Mr. Victor A . Elvestrom, the choir presented concerts in various Luth ran Churches of Tacoma, and on March 27, began its annual spring tour of two weeks. A ft er overcoming many di fficulties, the choir realized its vision of a tour through the "Inland Empire " , wbich was new territory to most of the members. After appearing in two concerts in Seattle on April 5, the son g sters roured northward through orher cines of the Sound going as fAr as Bellingham. Addici!)nal concerts were given in Tacoma and Portland. Prof. J . O. Edwards a nnounces that in addition to a first choir of forty voices, a second choir will he organiud next year.
