falstaff society FALL 2021
A LETTER TO OUR MEMBERS
Dear Falstaff Society Member, As you read this letter, the final scheduled pick-ups of the 2021 vintage are arriving in our wineries. The atmosphere at the PlumpJack Collection of Wineries is alive with excitement as Aaron Miller, Danielle Cyrot and Jeff Owens, our head winemakers, report on the laborious efforts of the harvest teams. Traditionally, the end of harvest is the most celebrated time in agricultural regions around the world; and for us in the Napa Valley, it’s also a reason to feel a bit more at ease as the last of the grapes safely make their way into fermentation tanks. As harvest comes to a close, our winemaking teams will continue to work round the clock as the fermentation process begins. Pumpovers, which extract color and add tannic structure to the juices, continue through the night, while fermentation tanks require constant supervision until the winemaker determines the wines are ready to be transferred to the French Oak barrels to complete the aging process. We look forward to sharing what’s already being speculated as an exemplary vintage of Napa Valley with you. As our 2018 Estate Cabernet Sauvignons continue to sell out, now begins the planning of the release of new vintages. Stay tuned for exclusive first access to these wines. Your continuous support of our Napa Valley Estate Wineries allows us to do what we love most, and for that, we could not be more grateful. Sincerely, Oscar Riveiro-Woolsey and Rebecca Stallings Winery Membership Team

Near record rainfall. Late budbreak. Late bloom. Late veraison. Late ripening. For the second vintage in a row, the key to the vintage was patience. The vines emerged from their dormancy later than is typical and they reached all their milestones later as well. As in 2018, it seemed the grapes would never ripen. So, we waited. Then, in early October, everything began to change. The flavors in the grapes grew deeper and richer, the skins began to grow thinner, and the color of the grapes was more easily extracted from the skins. Our patience paid off and the resulting wines are just stunning.
WINEMAKER IMPRESSIONS Our Merlot vineyard is in the Oak Knoll region of the Napa Valley and is nestled up to the Mayacamas Mountain Range on the west side of the valley. The mild climate and alluvial soils in this region lend this wine great balance and structure. The mild temperatures allow these grapes to develop bright aromatics and flavors, along with a beautiful natural acidity and elegance. The alluvial soils bring darker fruits to the nose and palate and give this wine its structure and concentration. The 2019 vintage has a beautiful and complex nose – layers of black cherry, boysenberry, black currant, and fresh cut flowers come through first, followed by cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, and a touch of cocoa. The palate, too, has great depth and complexity – flavors of black cherries, muddled berries, dried herbs, and dark chocolate. The palate has a creamy texture and silky tannin complimented by a fresh, vibrant acidity that lends this wine great length. BY THE NUMBERS BOTTLE
