I Love Denim! Whether we dress it up or down, denim always has it’s own unique place in all of our closets. This month Australian bombshell Sophie Sheppard graces our cover and is featured in sexy denim styles. In addition, we are so proud to feature the PLUS Model Magazine/ Ashley Stewart Model Search winner, Katherine Ani. Katherine was chosen PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / AUG 2013

you will see her at events and shoots, as we take the PLUS Model Magazine blog in a new direction (click to visit the blog). For those of you who watched House of Curves on WEtv, I made an appearance on the last episode when Bella Rene was presented to the media. I know that many of you were disappointed in the

“Wrap dress” comment, but I have learned to have thick skin in this business. It was more important for me to offer genuine and sound advice to an up and coming designer than to get “Emotional” over our preference in fashion. The designer, Kenyatta Jones, did address the comment on Twitter. As a community we should be honest with our advice and knowledge in the hopes that it’s received in the same manner. I’m working on a special Fall Fashion Issue and an even more exciting October Love Your Body Issue so stay tuned and (click here) to sign up for our blog. We will be looking for readers to feature, new models to book and working models to feature. Beauty Q&A

with Tara Taylor

Tracey from Detroit, MI Asks... I can’t get my eyeliner to last on my waterline. It either wears off and I have to reapply, or it runs. What is a good eyeliner that won’t budge? Tracey, gel eyeliners will last the longest on your waterline. They come in little pots and you use an eyeliner brush to apply. Smashbox, MAC and Makeup Forever are just a few of many brands now carrying gel liners and they come in a slew of colors so you can play!

Top 10 Denim Designers {and why...}

by Marie Denee

Denim is a tricky thing. Coming up second to only bathing suits, they are the most frustrating and scariest things to shop for regardless of size! However, there is hope and there are designers and retailers who have it locked on the denim market. It all depends on your personal style, budget, and looks desired! • Looking for a high rise? • Care for a specific wash? • Want fashion forward cuts? • Looking for denim that won’t sag? So what we have done is round up a few denim designers who give you options, style, form, fit and function! PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / AUG 2013

Everything Curvy & Chic everythingcurvyandchic.com

it’s august... let’s talk denim! If I had to name this look, it would be called Street Chic. I love clothing where you can just add heels and accessories (without much effort) creating the perfect outfit. Denim can be dressed up or down, which is the number one reason I love this look. I decided to add a pop of color to make sure that this outfit stood out. I love that boyfriend jeans are a major trend right now, which is challenging me to style them in different ways. Hope you enjoyed this look!

Getting Real

Kenyatta Jones by Madeline Jones

What makes a reality show great? Is it the drama, or is it the chemistry and story lines that make the viewers take interest? House of Curves on WEtv follows Kenyatta Jones, a young fashion designer, and her team through the challenges of creating her own plus-size fashion collection. Relationships are tested and the work environment boils to the top when tempers flare.

AUG 2013 / PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM

As viewers, we are there to see it all, without feeling like we are watching a scripted show; instead we are taken inside the organic circumstances of this dynamic team of women. *At the time of this interview House of Curves was on episode 4 Did you always know you wanted to be a designer? I did not always know that I wanted to be a designer, but I always had the “Passion for fashion”. I come from a very small town in Mississippi where your fashion choices are limited. I was exposed to fashion when I traveled as a young girl with my family, so once I was grown–up I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I lost my job and had to face that question “What am I going to do next”? One evening my plus-size friends and I did not go to a “White party” we were invited to because we could not find anything to wear that we liked. As we sat venting over dinner and drinks, one of my friends said, “You are always complaining, why don’t you do something about it?” I could not sew or draw, but I decided to take my MBA and figure out how PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / AUG 2013

to open the business. I hired someone to do those things I could not do, while I learned about the fashion industry. Why do you think there is such a vast difference between what is offered to smaller women and plus-size women in fashion? It’s very difficult to be a plus-size designer because weight is distributed differently on women, so it makes “fit” very challenging. For example, I have to design and fit a dress so it can fit various women and this is difficult. It took us from 2006 to 2009 to get our fit correct. We knew this was one of the most important things in designing for plussize women. There are also many plus-size designers who feel that “we” don’t shop so they don’t make clothes for us. Talk to me about price. I know many straight size designers have said that plus-size women will not spend money on quality clothing. AUG 2013 / PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM

I don’t think there is a clear understanding by many of what it takes to be a designer. Once you make a garment and you pay for everything and everyone, there is very little profit for designers like me who want to focus on more lux fabrics. You can’t say you want what Marc Jacobs has on the runway if you are not willing to buy it! Do you feel in some ways you are educating those women who are waiting to lose weight to invest in how they look? This was one of the reasons for the show, we wanted plus-size women that did not know, to learn about these lux fabrics and why high fashion brands cost more. We are not ‘pricing up’ because of size, we are pricing up because we are giving you quality fabrics and clothing that you can wear for many years. We hope this was translated to those watching the show. Who is the Bella Rene’ woman? The Bella Rene’ woman is confident more so than anything. She’s PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / AUG 2013

the woman that does not want to look like everyone else. She is very sure of her body, and even if she is losing weight, it’s very important to dress the body she has now. She is a trend setter and embodies a woman with style. Let’s talk about the show… at the time of this interview we have seen just a few shows and by the time we go to virtual print, the show will be over. What do you want the viewers to know? Our staff is really amazing because they are very passionate about the customer. I believe that a well fitting dress or even a great pair of jeans can change your confidence. Working with passionate women, and my mom, definitely blurs the lines, but no matter how bad it gets we know we have to work things out because the women are counting on us. When you introduced Kelli into the mix, I thought Kendra, Milan and Sherlynda were going to have to be peeled off the ceiling. AUG 2013 / PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM

Get to Know Marcy… An avid traveler, writer and fashion lover, Marcy Cruz was born and raised in New York City. Even as a young girl, Marcy never let her size stop her from expressing her unique style to the world. Growing up plus size in the 80’s was a tough time fashion-wise and it forced Marcy to utilize her creative side when it came to creating a great wardrobe. Whether she was bedazzling her jeans or cutting up her tees, she always found a way to work with the clothing options available to her. She was told by many that writing was not a “real” career and because of that, she majored in Forensic Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. After graduation, her career path took a turn when she was offered a great opportunity to work for a corporate travel company as the Executive Assistant to the PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / AUG 2013

Vice President. That position was the start of a successful career where Marcy went on to work for Continental Airlines in their Marketing department and then Redcats USA, a plus size catalog company, as a Website Administrator. During her seven years at Redcats USA, she went from being a Website Administrator for the KingSize brand to working as a Senior Website Administrator for OneStopPlus.com and then working on the Jessica London brand as an Online Merchandising Manager. Being a plus size customer herself, Marcy was an asset to her team since she could offer a shopper’s viewpoint on product and share her ideas from a customer’s point of view. After leaving Redcats USA, Marcy realized that being a writer can be a career and decided to pursue it while freelancing on social media projects. Since

Living with Purpose

by Rosie Mercado

“A journey of a 1000 miles starts with one step.” Lao Tzu Have you asked yourself the ‘big’ question? How do you find the balance between motherhood, spirituality and your career to find balance and happiness in Life! In my life journey I have dealt with many ups-and-downs, that have offered powerful lessons, and here are some tips that have helped me along the way de-stress, get organized and be happy! 1. Your ‘To Do’s’ The more we put off the items on our to-do list, the longer the list grows, and the more it contributes to elevated stress levels. Learn to schedule properly so you can knock out all those items you’ve been avoiding. Take a day, rise early in the morning and spend it knocking out the items on your list. This opens the neck and shoulders, where physical tension commonly builds up, and creates space in your rib cage for deep breathing. Either way, this exercise gives you a break. Enjoy today. PMM/Ashley Stewart Model Search Winner by Madeline Jones

City You reside In: Franklin, TN How did you hear about the Ashley Stewart/PLUS Model Magazine Model Search? I found out about the model search by following PLUS Model Magazine on Facebook and staying current with reading the magazine. What went through your head when Ashley Stewart called to inform you that you were the model search winner? I don’t know why I was expecting an email if I won. So when Ashley Stewart actually called me I literally jumped out of my seat! I was so happy. In this technological world, there is still something very sweet about actually calling someone. modeling 10 with Madeline Jones

Posing is one of the most important parts of modeling that you will develop as you progress in your career. As a model, you will book many types of jobs. When you get booked for a job, it’s important for you to look up the client and find out as much about them as you can. Look at their website and the types of posing they post, as this will be helpful when you are on set. This month we are going to concentrate on the use of your hands and arms in a commercial or e-commerce (also called ecomm) shoot. When you are practicing in front of the mirror it’s easy for anyone to pose, but will you be ready for your booking?

1

Both Hands Down: To pull this off you will have to relax your shoulders, arms and hands. Notice the model’s shoulders are not even, one is lower than the other and her hands are also purposely posed. There are many ways to do this one pose, so practice, practice, practice! Picture: www.LordandTaylor.com Dress: Ralph Lauren

2

One Hand on Hip: Looks simple and it’s definitely one that many models use, but the key is knowing what to do with the hand that is beside you. Many aspiring models will place it on their thigh and hold the thigh or even make a fist. Notice how free and relaxed her hand is. Picture: www.swakdesigns.com Dress: Kayla Dress AUG 2013 / PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM

3 Use Your Props: Sunglasses or handbag... this is a great way to use your hands and complete a look and bring attention to those items. When you are holding the sunglasses do not raise your fingers up. Instead, take notice of her fingers and how she is holding the sunglasses and handbag. Picture: www.nordstrom.com Look: Halogen Top and Jacket with NYDJ Pants

4

Delicate Hand Around The Face: This can be done in many ways. The key to this is to place your hand softly around your hair or face. Your hands and fingers should never be pressing harshly on any part of your body, especially your face. Picture: www.nordstrom.com Dress: Xscape Lace Dress and Accessories PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / AUG 2013

5

Hand Behind Your Head: Anything that you do with your hands or arms must be gentle. Notice her arm extension and how she is still in control of her facial expression and the gentleness of her hand. Picture: www.us.asos.com Dress: Body Conscious Mini Dress in Egyptian Print I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to know how to pose from head to toe. If you are an aspiring model trying to break into the industry, you will not become truly comfortable with posing unless you follow this formula. Practice every day, and I mean every day. If you do not practice you will not be prepared in front of the camera. You should also be shooting with different photographers. Make sure that when you are booking with the photographer he or she knows that you want some direction and will be trying to increase your fluidity in front of the camera. Good luck ladies! Tiffany: What made you decide to become a plus size model? Sophia: I’m a make-up artist by trade and with being involved in photoshoots I wanted to see what it was like to be a model. With the industry opening its doors to curvy girls more and more in the last 10 years, I decided to go for it. I asked my friend who is a photographer to do some test shots and it all started there. I really enjoyed being in front of the camera and discovered a self-confidence that I never thought I had. Tiffany: Who are your favorite curvy role models? Sophia: I absolutely admire people who chase their dreams. I admire Crystal Renn... and after seeing Robyn Lawley, Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Marquita Pring in Italian Vogue I wanted to chase my own dreams even more. Tiffany: What has been your experience being an aspiring model in London?

PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / AUG 2013

AUG 2013 / PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM

Sophia: I’m constantly working on my portfolio, my image and getting my name out there. I have modeled for some clothing companies, did a few runway shows and I keep entering competitions. It’s a very competitive industry, as many models know, but it’s very rewarding as you get to meet fantastic people. It’s all about who you know and you only need one person that believes in you to give you a chance. Tiffany: Finish this sentence... The plus industry is: Sophia: Growing stronger every day and allowing different sizes to come together. The most amazing thing would be to see models of different sizes walking side-by-side during Fashion Week. Tiffany: If you could pick the perfect plus modeling campaign for yourself, who would you want to work for? Sophia: I would absolutely love if Karl Lagerfeld designed a collection for curvy women. I would do anything to be a part of that! Tiffany: What are your dreams, desires and goals as a plus model?

Sophia: I would love to do well and get signed by a modeling agency, or do an amazing campaign and become a top plus model. I would love to get a chance to work alongside Robyn Lawley or Tara Lynn. Tiffany: What can we look forward to you doing in the next year? Sophia: Hopefully I will become the face of a clothing company or do some editorials for different plus size magazines. Tiffany: Name your favorite store to shop for curvy clothes in your hometown. Sophia: H&M and Dorothy Perkins (tall section) and I absolutely love ZARA. Tiffany: Who were the Photographers and Makeup Artist for the photos? Sophia: Photographers, L Photography and Wiki Bekeova Photography... and MUA was me!
