Luxe Fashion Is For Everyone... There’s been a lot of talk about plus size fashion and price points this past year. Many people believe plus size women are not willing to invest in themselves and buy high fashion, upscale quality clothing. With 67 billion + revenue in the plus size fashion market and brands like Marina Rinaldi thriving, it’s hard to believe that fast fashion is the only segment profiting. I do believe there are some women who only shop bargains, but there is a large majority of women who love who they are right now and enjoy fashion across the board. This month, we are celebrating our Luxe Issue with the ultimate high fashion brand, Marina Rinaldi on our cover. Marina Rinaldi was founded in 1980 as part of the Italian Max Mara Group and has become one of the best known labels within the brand. With over 300 stores worldwide, Marina Rinaldi offers ready to wear high-fashion clothing for the plus size woman. You can check them out here: world.marinarinaldi.com

Lastly, PLUS Model Magazine wants to remember Joanne Borgella. Joanne was a beautiful and talented plus size model, designer and singer who touched many hearts and shared her battle with cancer publicly. Joanne passed on October 14, 2014 surrounded by her family and left us with fond memories to cherish. RIP sweet angel.

Fashion to Figure has been on fire this year! Founded in 2004 by brothers Michael and Nick Kaplan, the brand has expanded their reach both on-line and in-store by opening up brick and mortar stores along the east coast. Their philosophy “We believe fashion is a state of mind, not a size range, along with a passionate staff, has made them one of the top shopping sites for trendy, luxe fashion in the plus size fashion industry. We are excited to bring you an exclusive sneak peak from Fashion to Figure in this issue.

PLUS Model Magazine is fortunate to have readers who are diverse in the way they shop. They love prints and they love solids... they love trends and some gravitate towards classic pieces. For this reason, we decided to offer diverse perspectives and price points on Luxe Fashion.

What makes something “luxe” and what makes it
plus-model-mag.com | nov 2014
#plusmodelmag

worth spending extra money on it?
The short and sweet technical answer to this is that in general, luxury garments are created with high quality fabrications, and crafted with immaculate construction, that are measured by a flawless fit and offer exquisite detailing in the design, while being sold at high-end price points in luxury boutiques, retail or department stores.
I personally think that “luxe living” is a state of mind. Wearing a garment that makes you feel luxurious, treating yourself with a well deserved splurge, and adding key pieces to your wardrobe that are higher in quality and price, but will stand the test of time in your closet are all elements of luxe living.
A bigger price tag can be harder to justify without a serious case of buyers remorse, but more times than not, we end up spending the money anyway, purchasing several lower end items that don’t last as long and need replaced. Take time to appreciate a garment for what it is, and go for it - splurge on yourself once in a while… you deserve it!
In this month’s issue of PMM, our Shopping & Style Editor, Alissa, shows us how to look like a million bucks without spending it with “Luxe for Less” items that are all under $125, and fashion contributor, Dani, highlights 10 must have luxury pieces she loves in “The Luxe List. On a beauty note, our Beauty Editor Tara shares her favorite products to keep your skin looking flawless without breaking the bank in “Luxurious Skin for Less” and last but not least, I have hand picked 20 must-have trends and styles to create your plus perfect wardrobe for the fall season, exclusively featuring LUXE plus size designers in the “Fall Fashion Guide”.
I hope this issue of PMM inspires you to “think outside the box” when choosing your wardrobe, whether you are shopping high-end designers, or creating a “luxe for less” look. Do not to be afraid to splurge on the items that are worth it, and save on the ones you can. Remember - you get what you pay for!

Maybelline Baby Lips
Argan Oil Perfect Edges
This is my favorite lip balm because it makes my lips feel super smooth! They moisturize them instantly leaving them baby soft all day without multiple applications – and, thanks to Maybelline, they come in six amazing shades.
I love this product for my tresses. Argan Oil leaves a shiny hold without the flaking or unwanted residue. This is a must-have on sets, as it helps my mane maintain sleek and soft styles.
AVEENO CLEAR COMPLEXION Cream Cleanser
When it comes to cleansing my face, I can trust this creamy cleanser to gently exfoliate my skin. It also prevents blemishes and breakouts. The cleanser succeeds in maintaining my even tone and healthy skin.
Dove White Beauty Bar
I’ve been using Dove since I can remember. I use this on my face daily, and it has been a huge key in the management of my skin – always keeping it hydrated and radiant.
BLACKOPAL True Color Stick Foundation SPF15
For maximum coverage that blends perfectly on my skin, I always turn to these cute and compact foundation sticks. The foundation leaves an even skin tone that keeps me feeling and looking flawless.

bag. Although I don’t mind her doing it (I actually think it’s fun), I want to make sure she isn’t ruining her skin. What products can I use that are safe for her, but can still make me feel beautiful? - Holly from Macon, GA
A: Holly, haven’t we all been there as little girls wanting to be “pretty” like Mommy. I know I was that little girl.
The truth is, your daughter really shouldn’t be playing in your makeup. Her young skin is new and can be susceptible to bacteria that are left behind on your applicators and products. We all carry our own bacteria. If you don’t disinfect EVERYTHING after each use, it will spread to the person using it after you, especially liners and mascaras. In this case your little angel.
So, I would suggest buying her a selection of her own fun makeup. There are several brands on the market that cater to young girls that are easily accessible at stores like Sephora, Ulta, Macy’s and Kohl’s. They have colors and packaging that are fun and appealing to our princesses. This way she has her own makeup made just for her.

Interview by Madeline Jones
Audrey Williams Atlanta, GA www.lululinden.com IG: @lululinden Twitter: thelululinden
How long have you been blogging? I’ve been blogging on and off since 2009. At the beginning of this year I finally decided where I wanted to be and where I’d fit into the blogging world, so I went full steam ahead with lululinden.com this past February. Where are your favorite places to shop? That’s like asking a mom to chose a favorite child! But then again, I’m not a mom, so here we go: Nordstrom, J. Crew and Madewell have become some of my favorite stores, I always beeline for the sales rack, though. The older I get, the more I appreciate good structure, tailoring, and classic items I can wear and re-wear multiple ways. Old Navy and Target are two stores that I’ve been finding some unexpected gems in lately. I appreciate their sizing, too.

H&M, Forever 21 and Wet Seal + for fast, trendy items when I’m in a pinch or feel like experimenting with trends. I’d hate to spend bank on something I won’t even want to wear next year. Thrift stores have always made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Just about all of my blazers, midi skirts and crossbody bags come from a Goodwill. What Fall Fashion Trends are you enjoying or look forward to wearing? I so badly want to explore the luxeboho fall looks -- I’m talking opulence. Dripping in sequins and fur. Some chiffon. A very late 60’s/early 70’s Diana Ross/ Brigitte Bardot aesthetic. Lulu Linden is the name of my inner drag queen (laughs), so I clearly admire that over-the-top-ness. It’s just not really practical for my life right now, but I’m young. Maybe I’ll just find a faux fur at Goodwill and wear it to class just because! On the total opposite end of that, I’ve just recently discovered that I can play with cool, edgy minimalism. I’ve always felt that getting dressed up had to be just that -- getting dressed up. But there’s something about a good moto jacket, a plain tee, skinnies and a heeled bootie with some simple jewelry that I want to experiment with.
How would you describe your fashion aesthetic? Well, maybe you can tell, but I’m a little all over the place. There’s this quote that I think of when I get dressed sometimes. It’s about how we get dressed for who we want to be. So, every time I get dressed, I think ‘who do I want to be?’ I can be any number of things, which is why I can’t describe it in a few words. Some days, what I want is to not be bothered, so I dress like a hobo. Other days, I want to put the fear of God into men’s hearts, so I’ll wear all black, a leather jacket, put on a bold cat eye and nude lip and stomp around. Or, I might feel light and playful and wear a floral midi skirt and sandals. So, basically, I’m crazy and my style reflects that (laughs).

Where do you obtain your fashion inspiration? Everywhere! The Internet makes it so easy; other bloggers and celebrities, obviously. Their confidence to wear whatever they want, as public figures, inspires me. My family is a big inspiration, too. I come from a large family of women, older women at that, so they have a very 50’s sense of fashion -- when women dressed up to cook dinner or wore jewelry and perfume any time they left the house. They put a big emphasis on looks from a young age, which has its pros and cons, but it taught me to take pride in how I look and to be aware of what I present to the world. What advice do you have for budding fashion bloggers? Do what feels right to you. If you’re stretching, or reaching for something that feels unnatural, you won’t be able to maintain it. Oh, and be proud of what you put out there. You’re creating something! You should feel so good about it that you want to shout it from the rooftops! Or in today’s world, shout it from Instagram, Twitter, whatever. Really, it’s shameless self-promotion. But you should love what you do enough that you don’t mind promoting it – tag the hell out of it! Do not be too cool for hashtags. You didn’t work so hard on that last post for no one to look at it, did you? And have fun! It’s just the Internet. It’s not like it lasts forever or anything...

I went to a few agencies and they all said that I had to work on my book and come back. It took me a while to set my mind as a model, build a portfolio and find the right people to work with. Finally, I started working as a model here in the US, Canada, Russia and Latvia. Last spring, I signed a contract with Muse Models and everything fell into place.

Maddy: Were you always interested in being a model or did you have other goals? Marina: Growing up in Siberia, I couldn’t even imagine being a model. I could dream of being an actress or comedian. A carrier, an astronaut or hair dresser was very attractive, too. My mom gave me good advice when I was in high school. She wanted me to graduate from University and then decide who I wanted to be. I have a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, and I can tell you, it definitely helped me to become a better model. I know how to work with information. You get a lot of it from everywhere and it’s important to understand what is right for you. You also learn intelligence and diplomacy that you need in any profession. Maddy: What are some of your favorite modeling experiences so far? Marina: I enjoy all the jobs that I do, I worked hard to get in the industry and I want my work to be perfect. I have many great memories. It’s a blessing to be able to do what I love and it makes me want to work any amount of hours and at any location. This summer, I had a great experience with Russian brand Svesta. Besides being a model for them, I helped them to put looks together and we spoke about marketing and brand presentation. I was happy to share my knowledge with these wonderful people. It makes me happy when someone gets inspired by you, when you work with the photographers who never shot plus models before, and they say after a day of shooting with you: “Now I understand what plus size fashion is about”. These kind of changes are important. Maddy: The Fall season is here. What brands and designers are you most drawn to? Marina: I love the lace trend; it’s sexy and feminine. Big sweaters and cozy coats – that’s what you need in this cold weather.

Maddy: What do you like to do when you’re not working? Marina: When I’m not shooting, I plan my day so I can be productive. I study new trends and poses so I can bring something more to my modeling. We have to stay in a good physical shape so I like to work out in the gym. I just recently found out that different body types need different exercises. Now, when I get my set from professional trainer and I enjoy the process much more, I can see better results. I have a family and love to spend time with my little son. I teach him math and we do sports. He teaches me a lot of things; he is super funny and adorable. My friends are my family too;

I love to spend time with them. We support each other in our careers and life goals. Maddy: What advice would you give to aspiring models? Marina: Know what you want and stay focused and optimistic. It might take a while to become a good model, you have to be unique. If you fit the requirements of a model, keep working on your look, your book and your interpersonal communication. These 3 are essential. Watch other successful models, straight size models and get inspiration from supermodels from the past. Test with the best photographers you can. Test with those who shoot working models, ask questions, learn from professionals. And always do your best, be kind and thankful to all the people you meet on your way. Favorite brands/designers: Anything that fits! Ha-ha honestly, I’ve struggled my whole life finding inseams that are long enough! But if I could wear whatever I wanted, it would have to be a mix of Topshop, ASOS, H&M, Target (don’t we all just love a little Mossimo from time to time?) and a ton of vintage items I’ve found thrifting. I have a few staple pieces from random designers, but generally speaking I don’t like to spend too much money on my clothes. I’m so finicky about my “style”, I’m constantly switching it up. One thing most people do not know about me: I hate flying; scared to death of it. Personal goals: I feel like a little kid whenever someone asks me this question...Where do I begin?! Let’s see, I want to be a model, an actress, a singer, a dancer, a chef, an astronaut... I basically want to be Barbie, tiny feet and all! In all seriousness though, I most definitely want to take advantage of the film and television opportunities that are blossoming in Atlanta. I’ve acted on stage since childhood and I would really like to crossover to film and TV. I reached a few personal goals this year by signing with an agent and booking my first role on NBC’s Constantine! I would love to continue to cultivate that as well as working on independent projects. Three things you can’t live without: Chapstick, Mexican food and my friends and family. (Can I add Netflix?) Advice for aspiring plus size models: Relax. I know you want everything yesterday, but good things take time. Work your strengths and understand your weaknesses. I find that most of the time it’s my own fears and emotions that get in the way of an objective. If you run yourself (your career) as a business, it may be easier to remove the emotions and focus on what needs to be done.

most important modeling questions!
@figureocho How can one be a featured model in your magazine?
There are several ways to be featured in PLUS Model Magazine. - If you are a signed model, you are already being considered. - If you are not signed, you should be promoting yourself via social media, website and/or blog. We are watching! - Model Search: We are always looking for new faces every year. Join our blog www.plus-model-mag.com Our news will come out first on our blog. - Real Woman/Real Model feature. We feature our readers’ bi-monthly in this special feature. @shakerias What’s a good exercise to practice different facial expressions?
Did you know our face can make approximately 43 different movements? Yes! Learn to isolate the muscles around your eyes, brows, forehead and mouth. This will help you with facial expressions as well.

Your best friend is the mirror. You have to spend time in front of the mirror practicing facial expressions and learning what they FEEL like so when you are not in front of the mirror you will know what you look like. @sashatheglamazon How do I know how to select a photographer for test shoots? And how much should I expect to pay?

What is the FIRST step to becoming a plus model?
The first step is to READ everything you can about the industry. You have to spend the time and read. This way you can make an informed decision about the type of modeling you are best suited for. @maya_eliseee Are tattoos a big issue or can they be worked around?
In the mainstream modeling industry, they are not a plus. Anything that causes the company to have to spend time on photo shop is always frowned upon. This includes blemishes, yellow teeth, broken nails, etc. It also depends on where you have the tattoo and how large the tattoo is. If you have it where it cannot be seen, then most likely it will not be a big deal.

image issues. For most of my adult life I have worked behind the camera as a photographer. I used self-portraits as therapy during the years when I wasn’t at all comfortable with my body. I began photographing myself as objectively as I could to see the image of me that everyone else saw. with poise. They, along with countless other women of those eras, were unapologetic. They played by their rules, wore what they wanted, loved their bodies the way women should love their bodies. I think style is just as much one’s attitude as the clothes they’re wearing!
Tiffany: What is the plus industry like in your hometown?
Elisabeth: Sadly there isn’t much of any, but I think that’s just the result of it being such a small town. There are lots of thrift stores in the immediate area, so that’s usually where I go shopping first. During my teenage years, when the plus industry was so much smaller than it is now, I usually had more luck in thrift stores than anywhere else! I’d buy the vintage
