the swim issue
Sponsored by Alwaysforme.com I’m so excited about our Swim Issue... After a long winter, many of us are ready for the warmth of the sun and eager to put away the gloves, scarves and bubble coats. For many years I used to regret summer parties because it meant dealing with the dreaded task of shopping for swimwear and then having to reveal my body in front of strangers.
We hope this issue inspires you as it has inspired me.

Always For Me is one of the leading plus-size swimwear companies in the world and we are so proud to have them on board as our swim sponsor. In addition to talking swim this month, we are also bringing some much needed attention to models who are often not acknowledged in the modeling industry. Fit Models are the backbone of the modeling industry. Their job is not glamorous like print models, but their job is very important. Learn more about the fit modeling industry and help us celebrate these amazing models.
plus-model-mag.com | may 2014
I quickly got over the part about showing my body, but shopping for cute swimwear remained a task. In the last few years there’s been a serious push for swimwear to be made more supportive of our bodies and trendier. Swim 2014 is certainly proving to be one of the best seasons in plus size swimwear.

Spring is in full bloom and we’re in full bridal mode on the PMM blog. In April, we covered some wonderful bridal stories and topics, which included beauty and lingerie. It’s also been exciting on the modeling front with plus size models being included on straight size runways and in mainstream fashion magazines. Change is happening in the industry and it is long overdue. Spring is all about vibrant colors and being playful with fashion and the clothing we’re seeing is evident of that. Before you know it, summer will be here so get out there, break some fashion rules and embrace the season while it’s still here. Make sure to check out our fashion spotlights on the blog to see the latest spring fashion must haves. Until next month… ~ Marcy fearlesslyjustme.blogspot.com

than 3 days? Sometimes it starts chipping on day 2! Elizabeth from Tarrytown, NY
Elizabeth, I have been doing my own nails for years and have tried, what seems to be, every product under the sun. This is my own technique that works well. I can get a strong 7 days out of it. Step 1: One coat of Orly Bonder Rubberized Basecoat. This works as a glue for the polish to adhere to. Steps 2: Three coats of your color of choice. Make sure the polish hasn’t gotten too thick and has a good medium consistency. Step 3: One coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat. This not only dries your polish straight through to the base coat, it gives beautiful shine. Tip: If you are not able to do your own manicures yourself, purchase the top and base coats from your local drug or beauty supply store and take them with you to your appointment!

Plus size swimwear has come a long, long, long, waaaaay! Just a few years ago, you couldn’t find any sexy swimsuits above a size 14; every swimsuit was a one-piece, and it was unheard of for a plus size woman to wear a bikini. Today we have swim options like never before. A plus size woman can now rock a bikini, tankini, or a strapless uber sexy onepiece, and the plus size swimwear market has expanded from traditional tropical floral prints to more fashion forward inclusions, such as Aztec and animal prints.
If you’re on the hunt for a swimsuit this season, take your time to find one that really fits and flatters your body. It can be overwhelming, but I’ve picked out some of the best swimsuits for your plus size shape. If you have an ample tummy, hips for days, or if you’re busty, I have got you covered.

yanderis by madeline jones
An industry insider once told me, “Maddy, models can’t just be pretty, they have to be a package.” Yanderis Lodos is just that, a beautiful and very talented package. Signed at the tender age of 17, this stunning Cuban beauty has been seen working for Macy’s, Walmart, Sydney’s Closet and works on Livetv

on HSN for Queen Latifah. We
traveled to paradise, also known as
Miami, to shoot and get closer to this warm hearted young lady. What we found was a very confident and humble beauty that radiates positivity from the moment you lay your eyes on her.
Maddy: How long have you been modeling and how did you get started? Yanderis: I never once thought that modeling would be written in the stars for me. I grew up as tomboy and wasn’t too much into fashion until I started getting into acting and realized that scuffed up knees were not really a good look for me. I would always attend cattle-call type castings for acting and modeling and I would always get past the first round. But the second round always remained a mystery to me because there was money involved. Growing up being raised by a single parent, money was tight. When I finally got the chance, my father helped me get to that second phase. My good friend Jonathan drove me from Miami to Orlando to meet potential talent and modeling agencies. I went to school for theatre so my main focus was to get callbacks for acting, but to my surprise I got 12, solely for modeling. I signed with my first agency, Irene Marie, at the age of 17. Maddy: Being a model is not always as glamorous as it seems. Is there someone in the industry that has inspired you to follow this journey? Yanderis: I have to give Kudos to Emme Aronson, Barbara Brickner and Mia Tyler, who have paved the way for plus models. But the one that hits home is my dear friend Denise Bidot. She has really inspired me as she is not simply just a plus size model but actually a multifaceted figure in the industry. She has made herself a brand and that’s very admirable! Maddy: Body image is such a hot topic in society today. How do you maintain a healthy relationship with your body? Yanderis: Ohhhhhh, it’s a struggle! It’s not easy coming from a Cuban family, when everyday there’s rice and beans (and you can’t forget something fried)! However, I do try to fit in evening power walks to keep and maintain my weight. Maddy: The plus-size woman is pretty proud of her curves these days, how do you feel about the term PLUS-SIZE? Yanderis: It’s referencing my size that I see as an ‘everyday woman’ size, and I take the PLUS as a positive.

Welcome back, readers! Hopefully, this fabulous May 2014 Swim issue has lifted your spirits and leaves you anticipating wonderful things to come this summer. This month, we’re celebrating mothers of all types with discussing ways to maintain health throughout the stages of pregnancy. Did you know that May is Pregnancy Awareness Month (PAM)? Established in 2008 by lifestyle expert Anna Getty and producer Alisa Donner, PAM was developed to empower, inspire, and build communities of support for expectant women and families. Their philosophy is simple. They want to help both mothers and children to be healthy by focusing on four core areas: education, exercise, nutrition and wellness, and nurture. Education before Conception: A healthy pregnancy begins before you become pregnant. Being in a state of good health also increases your chances at conception. This is known
as preconception and includes your individual health and your partner’s health as well. Womenshealth.gov highlights five of the most important things to boost preconception health: • Avoid contact with toxic substances. • Taking folic acid. Speak with your health care provider about recommended dosage. The average prescription is between 400mcg 800mcg. • Stop smoking. • Regulating and managing all preexisting health conditions. • Ensuring all vaccines are up-to-date. Exercise, Nutrition, and Wellness: As soon as you think you may be or are pregnant, call your health care provider and schedule an appointment. At this visit, your physician will request the date of your last period, perform a pregnancy test and physical exam. This information will help your physician to provide you with an estimated due date.

Once your doctor establishes your estimated due date, he/she will usually schedule your appointments as follows (if there are no complications): • Every 4 weeks until 28 weeks. • Every 2 weeks until 36 weeks. • After 36 weeks, every week until delivery. As your baby grows, you are now eating for two (or more) so nutrition is key. During this time, your weight, blood pressure, and development of the baby will be closely monitored. Nutritionists recommend incorporating lean meats, fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, and low fat dairy products into your daily diet. Other essential nutrients such as calcium, iron, and folic acid may be supplemented via prenatal vitamins to keep your bones strong and your body healthy. Exercise is also important for maintaining and improving health. Some suggested activities include yoga, pilates, water aerobics, and moderate-intensity activities. Prior to beginning or resuming any workout regime, consult with your doctor first. Being mindful of your body at this time is very important as additional hormones such as relaxin could make you more prone to injury. If you choose to partake in physical activity while expecting, be sure to obtain your physician’s approval, take plenty of breaks, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Nurturing Yourself and Baby: The process of becoming a mother is said to be one of the most exciting yet stressful times of many women’s lives. With all the emphasis placed upon the life growing within the woman’s body, many forget to nurture the woman carrying the baby as well. Experienced mothers speak of an understanding gained throughout the process of becoming a mother. This understanding is based on believing pregnancy is not entirely about the baby nor is it entirely about the mother. It is about the journey and successful meeting of the two. In many readings, experienced parents recommend that first time parents relish the moments before baby arrives. Get massages, meditate, read books, and get plenty of rest to prepare for the transition into parenthood. As seasons continue to change, so will the seasons of our lives. I wish you all very happy pregnancies, be it literal babies or metaphoric. Happy Mother’s Day to all!! As always…Be Blessed. Be Well. FIT
MODELS the backbone of the modeling industry
by madeline jones
understanding fit... A fit model is someone who works closely with designers and apparel manufactures while they work on the specifications
5’8” and wear a size 18 or 20. Specifications generally consist of height, bust-waist-hip circumference, arm and leg length, shoulder width, and a myriad of other measurements.
It is not uncommon for designers to use fit models that are smaller or larger. It all depends on the size garments they offer.
A fit model also has the opportunity to weigh in on the fit, style and material of the garment she is wearing.
Before a garment goes into production, the fit model has worn that garment and helped the product team create the best possible fit and style for our plus-size bodies.

Ashley
Max-Dixon
Size 20 She has one of the most important jobs in the modeling industry, but up until now, you probably didn’t know her name. Ashley Max-Dixon is a fit model for plussize retail giant Lane Bryant. As a fit model, her body is used as a live mannequin with decisions being made based on how the clothing looks and feels on her.
For many who are not familiar with the industry, Ashley gives us an inside look into the life of a fit model.

Many aspiring models do not know anything about Fit Models. Can you tell us how you got started in the industry and what a fit model is?
I started in the industry about six years ago and I am ecstatic to have a job working as a size 20 in-house fit model. Fit modeling is like being a live mannequin that you work

directly in front of designers trying on their latest designs so they can see the garments on a real body. It gives them a better visual of the fit and drape and also brings the garment to life. As a fit model, I work directly with technical designers who use the fashion designers’ vision to ensure the execution and fit are perfect and that the garment reaches the store, made especially for the plus-size woman’s shape and size.
Currently you are a freelance fit model for Lane Bryant. That must be so exciting! Can you tell us what a typical day would be like?
Every day is my runway, in my mind! Presentation is everything so I spend my early morning prepping my hair and makeup. Then I head to work at the Lane Bryant corporate headquarters. My day begins at 9am, Monday through Friday. Typically, I’m working with our technical designers on perfecting the best fit of a garment. I also support the technical design team by helping with measuring garments, organizing and filing garments. Occasionally, there may be special events where I would present future collections on a small in-house runway or in meetings. These meetings are my moment to be the saleswoman for the design team; the more I work and “sell” that garment, the greater chance that it will be selected to be in a Lane Bryant store one day. I love being a part of the process in bringing fashion to our guests.
Some girls have the measurements but do not know much about fashion. Should you be well versed in the construction of garments before you try to be a fit model? Photography: Jessica Lavoie Wardrobe Stylist: Heather Dinneen MUA & Hair Stylist: Holly Jean Ernst
In my opinion, the key to being a successful fit model is confidence. Confidence radiates through the clothes when they’re presented. You don’t need more than the average consumer knowledge to begin in fit modeling, but you should be eager to learn anything and everything the designer wants to teach you. A love for the fashion industry is a must. The most important part of fit modeling is constantly maintaining those measurements because they are so important in ensuring the ideal fit for every garment.
As a size 20 fit model, you see the clothing before it’s made available. How do you feel about the way some brands and designers market to plus size women?
It’s a lot of fun to get a sneak peek at clothing before it’s in the stores and it’s exciting to see the new ways that the clothing is being marketed. Lane Bryant recently introduced its firstever designer collaboration with fashion designer Isabel Toledo with a runway show in New York City, that was featured live on their Facebook page and website. It’s a big step forward for the industry and I’m looking forward to more collaborations that show plus-size women that they are worthy, beautiful and deserve to be part of the fashion experience.
Do you believe that there is room in the industry for models who look more like you to be used as print models?
I would love to see ALL women being showcased in great fashion designs and am encouraged by the plus-size advertising that is being accepted by mainstream fashion magazines. I was happy to see a plus editorial in Vogue this month! That would not have happened five years ago.

Years as a fit model: 8 years Have worked with: Jessica London for OSP, Ralph Lauren, Adorn, Delia’s/Alloy, Liz Claiborne and Sears/Kmart just to name a few! What you enjoy most about being a fit model: I enjoy all aspects of fit modeling, and I take my job seriously. I feel great satisfaction in providing a service for the plus-size community, as most clothing doesn’t fit well regardless of the size, but especially for our community. Fit modeling is not just about standing there and saying nothing. I think it is really important to be honest with the client about the fit of a garment. Since most plus-size clothing is purchased online or via catalog, the client needs accurate input about a garment, as the information I give them greatly affects how that garment fits once in the hands of the consumer. Knowing fit terminology is also important as I can assist clients to work more efficiently, since I know exactly what they are discussing regarding a garment. I can move or adjust my body according to what I hear a technical designer say to a buyer without interrupting a fit session. Although fit models are mainly photographed from the neck down, it is important to arrive completely groomed. If a garment looks and fits particularly well on me, I am often escorted around the company floor and sometimes even to the president’s office. And of course, free clothing is always a plus and a perk!

Have worked with: Avenue, Kmart, Sears, DKNY, Lane Bryant, Talbots, Kohls, JCPenney, Macy’s, Ralph Lauren, Jones NY, Eileen Fisher, Nikki Ménage Brand, Calvin Klein, etc. What you enjoy most about being a fit model: When I get a particular client or technical designer who REALLY gets the plus size woman- when they allow me to do my job and we can work together making the best possible fit/style, that’s thrilling. Plus size bodies are VERY different but that doesn’t mean we want to be treated differently in our style of clothing. Yet, there are sensitive fit issues that need to be considered. So when I get to work with some who gets that, woohoo!

I also fit swimwear, intimates, and outerwear for some of the largest retailers within the US. What you enjoy most about being a fit model: Prior to working as a fit model, I never knew the behind-thescenes elements that went into producing garments. Working with my clients, I learn something new each day via patterns and technical design elements as well as working with some of the most colorful and eccentric people in the world. I love being a part of the garment process, which makes plus women happy and feel great about themselves while looking amazing. That is the most enjoyable element of my job.

What you enjoy most about being a fit model: The suggestions I can give to help improve the look and feel of an outfit. Also, seeing people wear the clothing that I helped work on. It is exciting to see how it’s worn and how it can improve the confidence of the woman wearing it. Queen Latifah always wore clothing from AppleBottoms in the fit size I fit for, so that has been a highlight as well as being a fit model for Oprah!
