Fall 2018
From the President Welcome Back Miracle Makers, Well it is that time already, time to start a new school year. The sadness that comes with the ending of summer is covered by the excitement of a new school year. With the planning of new menu items and back to school celebrations a renewed passion appears for the awesome task we have before us, preparing students ready to learn. I pray your summer was full of rest and relaxation, along with opportunities to serve your communities through summer feeding or other service projects. Being equipped to serve for me this summer meant preparing and serving meals for the Carver Road Baptist Church Youth Camp. As I was planning the menus for camp, I focused on the student’s favorite foods and ending each meal with a special sweet treat, but the most important ingredient was love. Each day started with eggs, bacon, sausage and biscuits, and to my surprise this was the student’s favorite meal. One of our students even stated, “if a good meal was the way to a person’s heart, his heart couldn’t get any fuller”. My heart was full, and it really affirmed the fact that serving others ends with you receiving a larger blessing than you could ever imagine. As we start a new school year, let us always remember focus on mentoring new staff and pouring into our fellow workers. Someone once saw something special in me and encouraged me to dream and go further than I could have ever imagined. Who is your someone special and how can you make a difference in their lives? Just like someone, made a difference in mine. So, are you “Equipped to Serve”, Service Minded, Hunger Focused? Ready, Set, Miracle Making Time.

School Level Chair Message Hello Fellow GSNA Members: As we begin a new journey in this school year, I am looking forward to being your School Level Chair. We have many exciting opportunities for you to grow in this wonderful profession of ours. We begin our journey at Kick-Off Luncheon in Macon on September 27. This is a very special time to learn, grow, network and just have some fun. October 18 and 19 takes us on a journey to St Simon’s Island for Manager’s retreat. Please take advantage of these opportunities to learn and enhance your profession. I can’t wait to see my GSNA family at these events and hoping to add new family members as you become excited about GSNA. Remember, you are changing lives one meal at a time. Embrace every minute. Nancy Bourke, GSNA School Level Chair 2018-2019 Nancy_Bourke@Gwinnett.k12.ga.us
System Level Chair Message Welcome to the 2018-19 school year. The beginning of a new school term is much like the dawning of a new day; it reminds us that the future holds infinite possibilities. I hope that your summer was relaxed, filled with adventures, good health, hugs and kisses because you deserve it. We are about to begin a great school year filled with hope, vision, and excitement as we focus on being “Equipped to Serve, Service Minded, and Hunger Focused.” This promises to be a year filled with golden opportunities for all of our members as we strive to find ways that we can be even better than before. We embark on this journey with a pledge to you that this will be a year of engaging, meaningful and rigorous work on behalf of our members and our organization. One of the best ways to connect with other members of our professional community is to network with peers and keep up with the latest trends in our industry. We look forward to facilitating face to face opportunities for this dialogue to occur. Look for your invitation to forums in your area for networking, information sharing, and relationship building. We want and value your involvement and support in your Georgia School Nutrition Association. Your active participation is key to the success of our organization! Because we possess a leadership mindset I know each of us want to make a difference in the lives of our students, their families, and our communities. As we move forward, I invite you to think about something written so long ago but something that still resonates today. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I am confident that we will blaze a trail filled with success and accomplishment as, together, we launch the best year yet. We are “Equipped to Serve” and will embrace every opportunity to do so, we will inspire excellence with our “Service Minded” activities and we will unlock our potential to feed the multitudes by being “Hunger Focused.” Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your system level chair. I am honored and humbled to serve in this capacity amongst such great leaders in our industry. GSNA is alive with much energy, enthusiasm, and a high standard of excellence. It is, indeed, a place where opportunities abound. Here’s to an AWESOME year as we work together to serve Georgia’s future each and every day! Chair of District President’s Message The District Presidents had a great meeting at Leadership training in Dalton getting to know each other and learn all about what it takes for a district to be successful. They did role playing for conducting a district meeting and other fun activities. They were challenged to choose a color and a name for their district and to design a flag with their color and name to use at district meetings and to have at the annual conference. The group of District Presidents, themselves are called the Georgia Gems and our flag will incorporate all of the colors from each district . We will have a wonderful flag display at the annual conference from all districts. Each District President has their tote bag full of items ready to “equip” them for this year and we look forward to seeing what each district can do to be “service minded and hunger focused.” They are all excited about their year and eager to reach for the GOLD! Let’s Make it a Great Year! by Jan Arms, GSNA Industry Advisory Board, SFS PAC
As your GSNA Industry Advisory Board Chair (IAB) for 2018-2019, I am excited to work with the IAB Board, President Nicole James, the Executive Board and the GSNA Staff to promote industry interests that support GSNA’s mission of advancing the availability, quality and acceptance of school nutrition programs as an integral part of the education environment. GSNA’s IAB is a group of industry professionals assembled to work as a liaison between the School Nutrition Association and the industries which support it. The GSNA IAB members and their district assignments are listed in the box below. The IAB works in conjunction with the GSNA on hot topics such as: • legislative issues including lobbying state and national legislators, • increasing both corporate membership and association membership, • assembling purchasing profiles, • enhancing the annual conference and • working to develop the Industry Seminar.
The Industry Advisory Board, as well as all industry members, are ready to partner with the GSNA members to accomplish their goals. Whether it is teaching a PEP workshop session, supporting the Georgia and National LAC trips, or providing product training, industry members have the knowledge and desire to support school nutrition.
The GSNA Speakers’ Bureau is an exciting resource that is available to our members of Georgia School Nutrition professionals at the state and local level. We are so fortunate to have so many of our industry members willing to share their skills, knowledge, and talents for upcoming meetings throughout the entire year. 2018 Director of the Year: Rindy Trapnell – Wayne County GSNA’s 2018 Director of the Year is a “hands on” type of administrator. Rindy Trapnell, school nutrition director in Wayne County, has approached her 20 year career in school nutrition with a willingness to get in the mix with her employees and students. She does not “direct” from behind the desk, and you will likely find her out in a school serving, cleaning, or interacting with students and faculty to improve the program. No project is too small for her attention. Rindy offers regular staff training, working with other departments such as the school nurses and maintenance to improve staff skills such as CPR and choking treatments. All staff, including managers are cross trained for every job in the kitchen. She also works with student interns from Georgia State University to improve the program, including a “Snapchat” survey of meal opinions for students. In the summer of 2003, she began to see the overwhelming need to feed meals to children not only during the school year but also throughout the summer months. She began
the summer meals program with only herself and one manager. They prepared & delivered meals through the county to students. Rindy Trapnell, Wayne County As the program grew, she added more staff and opened more sites. In the beginning lunch was the only offering and 600 meals per day were served. We currently have 34 summer employees and 31 sites throughout the community. We serve over 2,000 lunches and over 700 breakfast per day! Rindy has kept the system operating in the black by careful management and by writing numerous grant applications for equipment. She is a great steward over the program funds and spends wisely. Her staff says, “Rindy is the true meaning of LEADERSHIP in ACTION.”
Manager of the Year: Larry Jackson – Sumter County – SNA Southeast Manager of the Year It’s safe to say that EVERYONE in GSNA knows Larry Jackson! Going the extra mile comes naturally to Larry, manager at Furlow Charter School in Sumter County. Larry takes the time to visit with students during meal service, jotting down their likes and dislikes. He has given countless hours above and beyond that required for his job in so many areas, including visiting students at their tables during meal time and taking notes on their comments and suggestions. Because he got so many questions about salt, he installed a “Flavor Station” so students could select their own flavor condiments. He doesn’t just focus on students, but all members of his school community who utilize the cafeteria, including staff, administration and faculty. Per a suggestion, he implemented an adult salad selection menu for individual choice salads, and added a whole grain cookie twice a week. His customized salads have been a big hit among adults. Larry leads by example, and 100% of his staff are GSNA members. He goes into the classroom to teach nutrition and participates in school fundraisers such as the Annual Pancake dinner. He makes sure his staff has the tools needed to their jobs correctly, and recognizes them on birthdays and holidays.
In the community, Larry is the chair of the Culinary Committee at South Georgia Technical College, Past President for the local Boys and Girls Club, and is on the Masonic Lodge scholarship committee. He invites local Larry Jackson, Sumter County and state legislators and leaders to come to his school for meals, and has served as President of both his local and District GSNA chapter. 2018 Beyond the Plate Award: Carol Griffin – Barrow County GSNA’s new award, Beyond the Plate honors an individual who works in school nutrition and has acted to address a problem facing individuals in his/her community. Our 2018 winner is someone who embodies care and compassion for others and puts it into action that changes lives. Carol Griffin of Barrow County LOVES what she does. Carol is a high school manager that cares about the children at her school. She noticed a boy who was not eating. She asked him what was going on. He told her he didn’t have any money for lunch. She offered him a lunch application, but he said he didn’t have anyone to fill it out for him because his dad had kicked him out of the house. Carol took it upon herself to go to the principal to have a hardship form done for the student. This student was ready to quit school and his teachers had given up on him. He told Carol because of her he found out there were good people in his school and he wanted to graduate. Now he eats everyday and is even a part of the weekend backpack program. Carol’s enthusiasm for her work is seen by all. A cancer diagnosis didn’t slow her down. She worried about the children at her school when she needed to take time for treatment and healing. She couldn’t wait to get back. Carol is also a fixture in her community. One of the groups she works with is “Share the Blessing. They host an annual
outreach event at Christmas. Since the beginning of this program, they have provided hot meals, healthcare services, a clothes closet, food pantry, barber serves, toy shop, and Carol Griffin, Barrow County spiritual counseling to more than 7,500 people in Barrow County. Carol gives up her Christmas Day to spend overseeing the kitchen to prepare the food. Carol’s Director, Pam LeFrois says, “Carol has qualities I wish I could clone. She is calm and patient. She always sees the good in people, even if there doesn’t seem to be any. She is forever looking for someone she can help. She is particularly drawn to those who cannot help themselves.” “She inspires me to become a better person. She shows that anyone, regardless of the amount of money you have, can make a difference in someone’s life. She inspires me to look for those who have lost hope. Others come to her when they know there is someone who needs help because Carol will find them the help they need. If she doesn’t find the answer, she keeps trying until she does. She is a true inspiration.” 19
