Winter 2018 Service Minded, Hunger Focused GSNA 2018-2019

From the President Dear Miracle Makers, I hope that each of you had a wonderful holiday and a great start to the New Year. I have been blessed this year to be able to visit many of the district meetings and training events throughout the state. All I can say is our members are amazing. The professionalism portrayed by our members at all levels truly shows a culture of leadership and servitude. The learning environments and educational materials have built on the excellence that we have seen in years past. As we move forward into this year, how will you be “Equipped to Serve, Service Minded, Hunger Focused” in the area of mentoring, leaving a legacy, and paying forward to ensure that our association continues to move into the future with excellence. Mentoring: We have been talking a lot about mentoring and how important it is to see the light in others and to grow that potential. What does true mentoring look like and how is it integrated in our everyday activities? Mentorship could be a call to a brand new director to see if they need help or direction in their new role. A director could pair a new manager with a seasoned manager for their first year as support and a safety net within a safe and trusted environment. Managers could integrate a way to identify staff that are struggling in specific areas and pair them with staff that are excelling. Mentorship can come in so many ways and it is not hard it is just intentional. Legacy: I often think about what my legacy would look like and what I would be remembered for in both my professional and personal life. In our profession we have many rules and regulations that we have to follow, but is that what we want to be remembered for or is it the passion we demonstrate and have for our students and our staff. Will people say she was dedicated to serving others with an open heart and attitude of humility and kindness? Will you be able to look back and see evidence of your legacy in others, and see leaders that you have fostered and grown into maturity? As an association how can we leave a legacy in our members, students, and the future of school nutrition. Paying Kindness Forward: Carrying it forward, what does that actually mean? Butts County had a program or a challenge introduced to our students and community through a school assembly. This challenge was truly centered on kindness, with a direct correlation with how does kindness truly look and how do we pay it forward. The students were given a challenge to eliminate bullying and embrace all students no matter if they are different than them. Adults were also given a challenge to unite with the students and to show leadership by demonstrating kindness in and outside the schoolhouse walls. Kindness 2

is evident in our culture and in how we treat others. Kindness can also be shown in how we interact with our students, staff and community. Therefore, Miracle Makers are you ready to leave a legacy of kindness? Ready, Set, Go

System Level Chair Message Almost six years ago when I became Director of Nutrition, I was asked if we had an active Georgia School Nutrition Association Chapter. Of course, due to my prior position and experiences, I had no knowledge of GSNA. After some research I decided we would go to the annual conference that year, it was filled with wonderful educational sessions, had great motivational speakers, and was a natural hub for networking. That experience was both prophetic and symbolic; I knew active membership was a must for our county. GSNA is a common thread in all of the work we do to serve our kids. Our membership and the experiences that come from such an organization will always have a special place in so many people’s lives and be a source of deep nostalgia for great memories shared with peers that have become friends. I suspect many of you have similar feelings and that GSNA has played an active role in molding you as a nutrition professional. Whether you are just starting your school nutrition career as I once was, or if you are seeking guidance and support, or just seeking others who share your passion for school nutrition, this organization is there for you. I have always felt that our association can accommodate everyone –regardless of the talent or skill you possess. We are all working toward the same goal of building healthy children who are ready to learn. We can all be proud, very

proud, of the work we do. We are able to serve the students we love – as an act of love. During my time as a GSNA member, I have learned from and been inspired by incredibly talented colleagues who selflessly share their gifts and talents. Thank you all for working with me and others to create an organization that is very special. We have toiled together to form an association for all affiliated with school nutrition, to be a resource for information pertaining to our industry, to be a trainer of critical skills, to be an advocate for core beliefs, and to be a channel to celebrate all that is good. Please know that you are appreciated for your time, energy, dedication, and caring for our future, and our kids – our greatest commodity. We are only half of the way through the year and we have so many great things happening on our behalf. Check out the GSNA calendar to see all the wonderful scheduled events, and make plans to participate and attend. I look forward to seeing you there, Equipped to Serve. Dr. Debra Morris GSNA System Level Chair, 2018-2019 dmorris@jcss.us

School Level Chair Message Hello Fellow GSNA Members: It has been a very busy year thus far. We have completed a very successful Manager’s Retreat in St. Simon’s. We had a lot of fun with our food assistants at SNAP in Covington. It was such an honor to watch our food assistants grow and learn. I see many GSNA leaders getting ready for the future. The second round of SNAP will be held February 21, 22 in Covington at the FFA camp. I hope that many of you will take advantage of this opportunity. I look forward to meeting you. You are the glue to our organization and what you do for our children is second to none. Be proud of what you have accomplished. In closing, we are helping to mold our future by loving and caring for our children. Love them no matter what. We have been given the gift of working in School Nutrition, the greatest profession. We get to see miracles happen each day. How awesome is that. Nancy Bourke, GSNA School Level Chair 2018-2019 Nancy_Bourke@Gwinnett.k12.ga.us

2019 State Legislative Position The mission of GSNA is to advance the availability, quality and acceptance of school nutrition programs as an integral part of education. 1. GSNA requests that $2 million be restored to state funding for School Nutrition in the FY 2020 budget. The restoration of these state funds will help offset rising health insurance costs and support the primary goal of preserving quality local school nutrition programs in Georgia. We are very grateful that Governor Deal and state legislators added $484,841 in state funds to School Nutrition in the Fiscal Year 2018 budget for the purpose of a 2% salary adjustment for lunchroom workers. While the amount of new funding was not enough to fund a 2% increase for all school nutrition staff, we are very appreciative of the support for school nutrition workers. We request that $2 million be restored to state funding for School Nutrition in FY 2020. Current state funding for School Nutrition in the FY 2018 budget is $23,578,501. State funds were cut more than 44% from FY 2009, when state funds for School Nutrition were $39.8 million to FY 2014, when state funding for School Nutrition stabilized at $22.5 million. Rising food prices and huge increases in health care costs, particularly for non-certificated employees, have placed stress on local school nutrition budgets. The State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) employer contribution per member per month (PMPM) cost has risen from $598.20 in December 2015 to $945 effective January 1, 2018. There is widespread misunderstanding about who pays the SHBP employer contribution for school nutrition workers- those costs are paid by local school nutrition programs. Increasing health insurance costs have tremendous stress on local school nutrition budgets. Local School Nutrition programs are self-contained and must cover all their own costs. Adequate funding allows us to accomplish our ultimate goal of serving healthy,

nutritious meals to Georgia’s school children. Restoring $2 million to state School Nutrition funding will help local School Nutrition programs balance their budgets in the face of rising costs for food, kitchen equipment and staff benefits, including health insurance. 2. Increase the funding for the Public School Educators Retirement System (PSERS) from the current $15.25 to $15.50 per year of service, to be included in the Fiscal Year 2020 budget. We are very grateful to the Georgia General Assembly for adding $1.57 million in FY 2019 for a 25 cent increase for PSERS retirees. Employee contributions increased to $10 a month in 2012, but this year was the first increase in the PSERS rate for calculating benefits since 2008. We are requesting that funds be added to the FY 2020 budget to increase the PSERS rate to $15.50 per year of service. The current retirement benefit for most PSERS retirees barely (if at all) covers the monthly cost of health insurance.
