ear Family,

I hope you survived the Holidays! My wish for you is that you had precious time with family and friends. Now let us take a step forward for a moment and think about the sound of the ocean and the sand between our toes. That’s right let’s go to the island, Jekyll Island! I am so excited for our conference this year so make sure you have marked your calendars to attend. We have already started planning speakers, breakout sessions and the last bash...party! Each conference I attend gives me strength to complete the year and keep growing in School Nutrition. I love the reunion feeling with my family across the state and look forward to meeting new people. I hope this issue finds you doing well for this school year. I know some are going through reviews, finding employees and just life issues just to name a few. Remember there is always someone that can assist you in almost every situation so please reach out. I love that our profession is always willing to share and that helps grow all levels of School Nutrition.

kids of Georgia! I want to task you with a challenge. Reading the news daily you see the violence and hate all around the world. I want you to take a breath before responding to each other in our environment. Be kind, caring, understanding and always love one another! Strong Roots, Strong Future, Regina Williamson GSNA President, 2016-2017 regina.williamson@hcbe.net #StrongRootsStrongFuture@GA_SNA

I want to take a moment and tell each of you how much I am blessed from every path that I cross and even for the members that support me and lift me up during this year. I am honored to be able to lead such an awesome group of people. I want you to know that we are not always praised for what we do but those smiling faces that grace our doors everyday sure do appreciate us for what we do on a daily basis. Our strong roots are building a strong future. The road that led you to this profession may have not been your choice. I believe that we don’t choose a job, it chooses us! I think often how lucky I am that it chose me. Even on the hardest days I keep a folder of good thoughts. It is letters, pictures and cards that have been given to me and it reminds me of why I do this job. Yes, we have to follow rules, serve an approved menu, and deal with HAACP but the most important thing is serving these great 2

School Level Chair Message WOW! Time has really flown by! The old idiom holds true, time flies when you are having fun!I have been having the time of my life across the state of Georgia, meeting, connecting, learning and sharing, but most of all, fellowshipping with old and new friends. I am very humbled by the excitement across the state on all levels of our organization and it is refreshing to see the lengths we go through to make a difference in the lives of children. There has also been a powerful excitement in GSNA. Members have been showing up by the numbers to participate in events and we would like to continue that momentum. As the seasons are changing from fall to winter knowing we will soon be preparing for the coming of spring, I would like to encourage our members to continue to gather tools from every event that will help renew and grow you into your next season. I would like to take a moment to also say, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve you over the last two years as GSNA School Level Chair. Everyone that I have come in contact with has added value to my life. Every event I have attended has answered the

question, “What’s in it for me?” And every encounter has confirmed my season of purpose for being a part of such a wonderful organization. I truly believe I am “walking in my purpose into a new season.” I would like to leave you with this: “some people, events, or situations are in your life for a season. But some people, events, or situations in your life are a confirmation of the reason you are in your season.” I look forward to continued growth and many more seasons filled with new beginnings. Walk in your season of purpose. Tessany Lockhart, School Level Chair tessany.lockhart@hcbe.net

ow many times have you reached out to someone for help on something that you just couldn’t grasp? If you know me, then I have reached out to you – to pick your brain or to ask, “how are you doing this” or “how did your students accept this?” One of the many things that I love about school nutrition (aside from feeding precious children) is that we network, we share, and we cherish our professional relationships. In our ever flourishing organization, we have a new season of nutrition professionals upon us. If you haven’t met them, you are really missing out. This new generation of professionals has amazing ideas with fresh, vibrant skills that would simply amaze you. I encourage each and every one of you to take the time to mentor to them. All of you are brilliant and have skills that should be shared. You could be that one mentor who guides that mentee and provides them with a wealth of knowledge that allows them to share their new talents with someone else – all because you took time to mentor them. Regina’s theme, “Strong Roots, Strong Future” continues to encourage us that as an association we have a lot to be proud of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We come from a long, strong line of leaders who are still empowering and teaching us each and every day in different capacities. I hope you were able to join us at Kick-Off Luncheon where

the party got started - literally. The System-Level sessions had phenomenal speakers with amazing topics on leading cohesive teams, taking out the “just,” and creating innovative ways of boosting participation in our districts. Additionally, I hope that you were able to implement some of the things you learned at KOL in your district. Keshia Williams, System Level Chair Keshia.williams@haralson.k12.ga.us

The professionalism and skill level that is displayed at the state competition increases each year and raises our profession another level. Only Dreams Give Birth to Change By Jennifer W. Sills, MPH, RD, LDN, SNS, GSNA Industry Advisory Board Chair 2016-2017, Form Plastics Company

I

love the New Year because it means a fresh start…a new chapter in life waiting to be written. The New Year also means its time to ask questions, challenge life and dream big again…not waiting or hesitating due to fear or making mistakes. I suggest that if you are making mistakes, then you are trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself and ultimately changing your world. In 2017, I challenge you to live a transformative new life that delights in self-discoveries and the accomplishments of long-held dreams and goals. To help you start to live the life you deserve, I encourage you to get involved in GSNA. The lifelong friends made, the continuing education attained, the professional networks developed and the personal satisfaction achieved will far exceed all your expectations! This year is perfect to start your GSNA self-discovery journey as there is so much going on. Check out the calendar of events on the GSNA website to stay up-to-date www. georgiaschoolnutrition.com. A few highlights include the Legislative Action Conference in February, Annual Conference in April at Jekyll Island and National Conference in July in ‘Hotlanta.’

24

Each GSNA event provides a unique opportunity to get involved and have a voice. As a strong, unified group we can impact the future of the profession and the school nutrition programs that feed Georgia’s children. Industry members working closely with school nutrition professionals from across the state of Georgia have the desire, determination and dream, but it starts with each individual making a commitment to get involved – local, state, regional or national volunteerism makes an important contribution to the goals of the whole – we need you!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.” —Margaret Meade

Reauthorization: Looking Back & Looking Forward

From the School Nutrition Association December 2016 Update

W

hen the 114th Congress officially adjourned on Friday, December 9, 2016, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) issued a statement declaring that “Child Nutrition Reauthorization negotiations have come to an end for the 114th Congress.” What does this mean for SNA’s Reauthorization-related advocacy efforts? A brief Q&A follows. Q: What happens now that the 114th Congress has adjourned without passing a Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR)? A: While the House and Senate Committees of jurisdiction passed individual CNR bills, action stalled, and neither bill advanced to become law. Therefore, until the next Congress takes up a new reauthorization process, programs contained as provisions within the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) of 2010 will continue to remain in effect. Q: Didn’t the HHFKA expire on September 30, 2015? A: Although the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 technically expired on September 30, 2015 – the child nutrition programs continue to operate under the Act. The school meals programs have permanent status, so the reauthorization of the actual programs is not required for them to continue. But the Reauthorization process provides an important opportunity for Congress to expand access to and improve these programs. Q: So the HHFKA is still the law we operate under? A: Yes. Absent a new CNR, HHFKA remains in place. Q: What will happen when the new Congress begins in January? Will the Senate Agriculture Committee and the House Education and the Workforce Committee continue with the bills they passed in 2016? A: When the 115th Congress begins, the Committees of jurisdiction must start over. A CNR bill will have to be drafted, debated and amended in both the House and Senate Committees and voted out for the full House and Senate to vote on. Once the House and Senate pass their versions of the bills, a small group of legislators – a “conference committee” – meets to merge them into one bill and resolve differences. Then, both the full House and Senate must pass the Conference Committee’s final version of the Child Nutrition Act, which then goes to the White House for the President’s signature. 28

Q: Given that the Target 2 sodium requirements are scheduled to go into effect July 2017, will that happen on schedule? A: As you may know, the previous two Fiscal Year (FY) Appropriations bills contained language addressing sodium and whole grains. Fortunately, the recently passed FY 2017 spending bill also includes the same language, which extends through September 30, 2017. Given that this is atemporary solution, SNA will work with the new Administration and Congress to find a permanent solution. Q: What has SNA been doing to address the looming Target 2 sodium reduction mandate? A: SNA Leadership met privately with Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) on November 17, 2016, urging him to help us with the challenges of sodium-reduction regulations. Chairman Roberts committed to working with SNA to find a permanent solution in the next Congress. SNA is also reaching out to the House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Senate Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) for meetings as well.
