Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
We sadly couldn’t put three wins on the spin together against Manchester which we should have seen out, but the team ran out of gas after two nail biting overtime games previously. Defensively we managed to keep a number of quality players into moderate numbers but struggled offensively with our percentages not being what was required to get the game over the line. It was pleasing that the roster shared points, but we need to be more potent on the scoreboard as we enter the final stretch of the campaign.
With that in mind we have wasted no time to get some deadline signings into the club in the form of Ralph Bissainthe and Otas Iyekekpolor. Releasing Jawaun and losing Bell meant we had to reinforce what we had and although it has taken longer to get them into the group than we would have liked. They have trained well and can have no bigger baptism of fire then the London lions in their debut. However, both have already demonstrated a real professionalism in their work, and it is really pleasing to have some more experience in the roster and the atmosphere in the group has been great this week.
London are obviously the standard now to follow and with a roster we can only dream of at the moment it is going to be extremely hard to get a result. However, if we can match the atmosphere, we created last time the lions were in town we will be in for a really good afternoon of basketball. I’m sure the new recruits will want to make their mark and our seasoned pros will want to show that they can compete against the highest level of competition in the league.
You will have seen a number of articles and national exposure on ITV regarding the club which is really encouraging and shows the interest we are now generating. Our programmes continue to grow, and the recent video completed by the BBL on our community work is a very inspiring video which makes me really proud.
We also have had some success on the court with the Patriots ladies team becoming the Exeter and District league winners and cup champions. This was also followed up the Patriots coached BUCS Marjon university team winning their cup this week and being promoted out of their respective league this season.
All the above shows amazing progress this season which we look to continue to build on every month/season to develop a truly great basketball community.

Welcome to today’s game against Champions elect as we battle against the London Lions.
London, who have already put the BBL Cup in their trophy cabinet and unsurprisingly also look set to claim the BBL Championship with games in hand.
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it, this London team is the strongest and best team that has ever been assembled in the BBL. They are packed with great talent in every position and play a style of basketball that is great to watch.
London Lions have set the bar high this season and that’s great for the British game. The standards they are setting is getting the BBL talked about more than ever before and the exposure for the league and teams is only going to get more and more talented players wanting to play in the BBL.
A lot of this additional attention on the BBL comes down to how well London have been doing in the 7Days Eurocup and long may their success continue as that will benefit us all in the long run.
After another mini break in our season, you will know and see a couple of new faces in our roster in Ralph Bissainthe (RB), and Otas Iyekekpolor (O). As always, I know you will give them a big Patriots welcome.
We have only had a week to work with them and the rest of the team, so we must be patient as we try and get them fully up to speed with what we want and need from them as a team. The signs have been good and were looking forward to the remainder of the season as we try to make a real play-off push.
Integrating players part way through a season as we have seen is tough, but if it’s not right it needs to be fixed and hopefully, we have done that with these two additions.
I think it’s going to be an exciting end to the season with still so many things that could happen between now and then.
We must be ready to do battle with the London Lions this afternoon and show fight, grit, toughness, and great determination!!!
A warm welcome to the coaching staff, players, and support teams from the Lions for these BBL championship game.

The Plymouth City Patriots were in action Sunday afternoon, taking on the star studded Manchester Giants in front of a packed out Pavilions crowd, in an exciting close fought game of basketball.
The teams had met twice so far this season and before tip off it was one win a piece for each side, with a chance for both teams to take a lead in the series. As such, it was a fast paced and highly competitive matchup, with both teams showing plenty of talent on offence and determination on defence.
The Patriots did manage to have a slight advantage in the early exchanges, and took a four point lead into the second quarter. The home side piled on the pressure and behind rookie Markedric Bell, took a ten point lead heading towards the half time break. It would be Markedrics last game this season, with the club releasing him due to a family related concern back home in Mississippi. The Giants turned up the intensity however, reducing the home team’s advantage to just two points by half time.
The second half started as the first half left off, with both teams trading baskets and heading into the business end of the game locked firmly at 61 points each. The intensity from both teams saw the next five minutes continued in the same vein, with both teams exchanging baskets, until the visitors Nick Lewis and Dirk Williams knocked down key baskets, opening up a 5 points lead. The game hung in the balance, as both teams had opportunities to effect the outcome, until Manchester Giants big man, William Lee iced a three point dagger, with less than a minute on the clock. The game was just out of the Patriots reach and despite the imminent result, the home fans rose to their feet to give their hard working team a standing ovation as the final buzzer sounded, finishing 87-77 in favour of the visitors.
Positives from the Patriots included stand out performances from Rashad Hassan and team captain Elvisi Dusha, both finishing with a double double, but the standout performance was perhaps that of Markedric Bell, who poured in three three pointers and a tremendous dunk, over the oppositions seven foot center, Legend Robertin.
“I thought for three quarters we played ok, with good pace and tempo,” started Head Coach Paul James in a post game interview. He continued, “In the fourth quarter I think we looked nervous and played not to lose the game, as opposed to playing to win and Dirk [Williams] came up with some big shots… And they made some big plays down the stretch and put it out of our reach.”
Elvisi Dusha was also frustrated at the outcome, saying “I feel like we gave them the game. They made some big shots, but we created too many turnovers in the fourth and I personally felt I got
Match report by Pablo Cheeksa little bit tired as well.” Dusha played last weekend with flu-like symptoms and was clearly still feeling the effects, adding “I still don’t feel too well now, but it is what it is.”
The last word however, belongs to Markedric Bell, who will be sorely missed by the club and fans alike. “I would like to thank all the fans for their love and support today,” said Bell post game. He continued, “it’s been heartwarming. I’ve been trying to hold back the tears all day. I wish my teammates all the best for the rest of the season. I’ll be rooting from home and thank you to them for pushing me every day to be the best I can be. Major thanks to the fans and the organisation though… I’m lost for words.” Bell was surrounded by fans, both young and old and embraced by all until he finally left the court some fifty minutes after the end of the game.
His one lasting image before he headed to the dressing room was that of Markedric giving one young fan his game-worn sneakers, which he signed and handed to him in an emotional end to his Patriots season.
How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.
Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition.
Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
