LET’S MAKE SOME NOISE WITH ANOTHER PACKED HOUSE

With the games coming thick and fast we are again at the pavilions with another packed arena which is really pleasing to see. I really appreciate the support that is being given to the team and to see people having to book so early to get a decent view shows how far the club has come in just over one season.

We sadly got another basketball lesson by Leicester in our last game at Pavilions and they never fail to show up when we play them. Mentally they were zoned in and after withstanding our early pressure they showed how consistent 3-point scoring win games and didn’t flinch once they had their noses in front.

One positive last week though was the effort and leadership of our club captain Elvisi Dusha. Elvisi has been excellent this season both on and off the court and is really showing consistently what we all know he can do and really proud to see him shining for the patriots this season.

Off the court we will shortly be announcing some exciting news regarding additional community work we have planned and outline the increase in our school’s programme. To see the interest from both primary and secondary schools is amazing and there really is an added

interest in the sport for children to get involved and organisations to collaborate.

From the long merchandise queues to seeing most of the crowd decked out in some sort of patriots wear we are definitely growing a whole new fanbase and building a real following in the city. I’m still astounded by how many people still haven’t been to the basketball and love seeing their faces when after the game they realise what they have been missing. There is no argument that we have the best cheerleaders and mascot in the league, and I would be biased and say the best fans. I also love the number of families we have at the games and how much everyone is benefiting from the growth in the sport in Plymouth. It’s critical that we all continue to support the sport which is vital to the community.

Today we face Sheffield Sharks who were one of only a few teams we were unable to beat last season and are known for their excellent defence. They are really difficult to breakdown, and we will need to be really effective at both ends of the floor to gain some points today.

Let’s give our patriots all the support we can and drive them on to another victory,

COACH PJ A WORD FROM

Good afternoon and welcome to the Pavilions for today’s BBL championship game against the Sheffield Sharks, who are coached by Atiba Lyons. Last Sunday against Leicester Riders, we came up against a team who are starting to come into a good vein of form. I thought Leicester played as well as I’ve seen them play this season. They moved and shared the ball well, turning down good shots for even better shots. They scored the ball with great consistency and defensively they made it very tough for us.

There are games when you must hold your hands up and recognise you just got out played and this was one of those games.

After the first quarter, where I thought we started well, we struggled with the lack of depth in our squad and having Troy out really affected our three-point scoring potential.

On the other hand, Leicester showed why there are the current BBL Champions. They have great depth and quality throughout their roster.

Defensively we just didn’t cope with Leicester’s ball movement at all and gave up way too many easy points soft scores in the first half.

Defensively we need to be tougher and more together with our rotations and be totally committed to system. If one-person doesn’t what they are supposed to do, then the whole thing falls apart!

You can be assured that this has been a focus point for us this week. I feel that we have scored the ball ok, but defensively we haven’t been where I want us to be as a team.

We face another tough challenge today against Sheffield. They have had some very good results this far in the championship and are always a very difficult opponent to play against.

I extend a warm welcome to the Sheffield’s coaching staff and players for this BBL championship match.

ENJOY THE
GAME. GO PATRIOTS!

MATCH REPORTS

LEICESTER RIDERS 79 - 101

The Plymouth City Patriots took on the Leicester Riders this weekend, in front of a sell-out crowd at Pavilions, but ultimately came up short. It was a confident and fired up Patriots that took to the floor Sunday afternoon, and rightly so with a two game winning record at Pavilions intact and a chance to take the scalp of the reigning BBL champions, Leicester Riders. Indeed the Patriots looked the better of the two sides in the early exchanges, keeping the Riders scoreless for the first two minutes of the game. The Patriots crowd reached fever pitch, as the home team made play after play, and traded baskets with one of the best teams in the country. Going into the second quarter, the Riders had closed the gap and took a slender lead, a lead they would stretch out to double figures as the teams headed to the half time interval. From this point on, it would pretty much be one way traffic with the visitors applied pressure to the hard working Patriots. Leicester stretched their lead out further in the third and into the fourth, finishing the game with a 22 point advantage, taking it 101-79.

The Patriots would be left to rue their impressive early start and regret not converting defensive stops and turnovers as the game unfolded. Their opposition, treble winners last season and a team with the second largest medal haul in BBL history, pounced on the Patriots missed chances and put the game out of reach after half time.

One positive from the night was the performance of the Patriots player of the game, Elvisi Dusha, who finished the game with 24 points and eight assists. Dusha put his team on his shoulders and played the true captain’s role, spearheading the home side’s offence. Post game, Dusha explained, “It’s the role I’ve had, with all our injuries this season.” Dusha turned his attention to Sunday night’s game, saying “... the Riders are a tough team that plays 40 minutes consistently and I feel like we didn’t play hard for 40 minutes. We knew tonight was going to be tough and we wanted to get the win, but it’s done now, we can put it behind us and concentrate on Sheffield, in our next home game.”

Rashad Hassan, who has impressed in his last two outings for the Patriots was downbeat after his team’s loss, saying “ I’m very disappointed in our performance, but it’s a long season and it’s still early days, so we’ll bounce back and get them next time.” Hassan finished the game with 8 points and seven rebounds and was keen to put the loss behind him, adding, “I’m looking forward to Sheffield, which is going to be a big one. They’re a good team, they surprised everybody by giving London their first loss, so we have got to come in prepared and have a much better performance than we did today.

Head coach Paul James was also disheartened after the loss, saying “I’m really disappointed. I felt that defensively we didn’t compete with them, despite having a good week in practice. We scouted them well, and identified their top class personnel who we wanted to try and keep quiet, but we just didn’t do that in the first half.” Coach James was complimentary of his teams opponents, adding “Leicester love coming here and performing in front of our fans, and I certainly think they’ve played the best I’ve seen them play all season.” James was also keen to look ahead to next Sunday’s matchup and put this week’s loss in the past, saying “Sheffield play a different style to Leicester, less up and down so to speak, so hopefully we can lick our wounds a little bit and regroup for what will hopefully be a good game next week.”

James also offered an update on the injured Troy Simons, after his nasty looking injury last week during the game against the Caledonia Gladiators. Simons appeared to injure his back after landing awkwardly after attempting a contested layup and had to be carried from the court on a spinal support board. James informed us that “Troy has a pinched nerve in his back, which still needs to settle down. He’s doubtful for next weekend, but it is what it is and we’re just trying to find a way to win with what we have left available on the court.”

The Patriots battled hard against the reigning BBL champions and as underdogs were always going to find things difficult. Playing from a reduced roster and only able to use an eight man rotation added further issues as the game continued. The Plymouth side will need to regroup and meet next week’s opponents, the Sheffield Sharks, head on at Pavilions, 3pm tip off. Tickets are available through the Plymouth City Patriots and Pavilions websites.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO

How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.

Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
