A WIN IN OVERTIME WAS OVERDUE

Words from the Chairman

We finally ended our losing streak against Surrey in emphatic fashion and it was thoroughly deserved. To see the team, respond to the changes we had made and finally get a tight game over the line was really enjoyable to watch.

Ty showed his class and delivered an MVP performance alongside a supporting cast of many players such as Elvisi and deuce. Special mention goes to Elvisi who was feeling terrible before, during and after the game and soldiered through to put in a tremendous shift and a captain’s performance. The result felt like a true team performance and to stay firm under overtime pressure showed character.

But the main stars of the show were the travelling fans. I have never seen so many away fans at a BBL game and the support was truly amazing. To walk into the sports bar at the Surrey sports park and see the bar full of Patriots fans was a great reception and it really felt like a home game. The following we have created in a short space of time is truly humbling and I really appreciate everyone support.

Part of the travelling fanbase at Surrey was the famous Jasper who has been to every home and away game this season travelling thousands of miles in the process. Creating these stories of

how basketball is inspiring children in the city is the core focus of our culture and i’m passionate about driving this agenda.

It’s also been a busy week off the court where we delivered a full week of Half term camps which were really well received. Delivering these give us so much pleasure and seeing everyone get so much from them and inspiring children to enjoy the game is really rewarding.

It was also great to see Patriots receive national coverage on ITV this week regarding our youth programme and the progress of the franchise in a short space of time. Sometimes we don’t realise how far we have come and take stock and nice to get some recognition of what we are doing.

We now turn our attentions to Newcastle who will really see this as an opportunity to climb into playoff contention and drag us out. Although Newcastle has much greater resources, they have been unable to assemble consistent results and we really need to be on top of our game if we are to get anything today.

If we show the spirit in Surrey, we have the tools to get the job done!

COACH PJ A WORD FROM

Hello, today we host the Newcastle Eagles in this BBL championship matchup.

We have had our struggles in the past few weeks, and I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I was in our BBL trophy ¼ final exit to the Derby Trail Blazers last week.

In Derby, we played a very good team who are having their best season in division one of the National League. I was impressed by the Derby players as they kept their composure in the second half when we came back at them. They continued to share the ball, played tough defence, and executed their plays in the key moments of the game exceptionally well.

We, on the other hand failed to show the same control and composure once we pulled the game back to 4 points. Sloppy turnovers and bad shot selection in period of time allowed Derby to pull away again and we must give credit where credit is due. They were the better team on the day!

Friday evening, we played the Surrey Scorchers in what turned out to be a very entertaining game, helped by our amazing travelling fans who made it a real party atmosphere. This certainly was a must win game for us and everyone played their part, including the Patriot fans.

It was a game where the Scorchers had led for almost 30 minutes, but the key was that we stayed within touching distance for all that time. We managed to claw the lead from the Surrey and from then on it was going to be which team held their nerve and executed the best down the stretch.

We thought we had the game won at the end of regulation only for Surrey to hit a 3 to level the score and into overtime we went. We did a great job in overtime outscoring Surrey by 18 points to 8. This was a hard-fought win and one we so desperately needed.

Today we take on another team in Newcastle Eagles, who have also had their struggles this season too, but seem to be getting things together of late.

This is also probably a must win game for both teams as we fight for an end of season playoff position.

We need to bring the energy, fight, and commitment to our remaining games, stop looking back and start looking forward. We can turn our fortunes around if we all have the same will to do so! I want you the fans to turn up the noise, it really pushes the team on.

We released Jawaun Daniels in the week, because it was the right and best thing to do for the team and club. Never are these decisions taken lightly, but they are always taken with the club’s best interest at heart!

A warm welcome to Coach Steutel, his staff, players, and Newcastle Eagles supporters for this BBL Championship game.

ENJOY THE GAME.

MATCH REPORTS

The final spot in the BBL Trophy went to an NBL side, as the Derby Trailblazers beat the Plymouth City Patriots thanks to 36 point Malcolm Smith. Led by 36 points from Malcolm Smith, the NBL Division 1 side were relentless on the offensive end. The Patriots were forced into a shootout, with Elvisi Dusha and Rashad Hassan scoring 25 points each.

However, it was a third quarter Derby run that created a 15-point margin that was too big to come back from. The Trailblazers shot an excellent 79% from three-point range. Jonas Dieterich got the first bucket for Derby before Ty Gadsden connected on a three-pointer for the Patriots. He scored nine points in the quarter, on 3/3 shooting.

Derby built up a six point lead – Ryan Bruggeman hit a triple and Malcolm Smith getting his first score inside. The match-up of the evening was Smith versus Hassan, two high quality big men that battled in the paint with size and quickness. Near the end of the first period Hassan scored on a hook shot inside. Smith responded with a turnaround jumper of his own. Derby built an 11-point lead with Raheem May-Thompson capping off five unanswered points.

Dusha cut the lead back down to six points with a three, then worked in the post, scoring a rare sky hook. The Trailblazers continued their momentum and fired back with a triple from May-Thompson to close the quarter. In the second period, the Trailblazers extended their lead to 15 before Dusha gave his team some hope; scoring on a three-pointer.

Derby shot 55% from three and 85% from the free throw line in the first half and worked the ball around the perimeter to create easy looks in the halfcourt and transition game.  The teams traded baskets as Smith and Bruggeman carried the Derby offence through the period. It was MayThompson whose three-pointer gave the away team their largest lead of the game with 15 points. In the third quarter the Patriots were able to cut the lead down to six points. A 10-2 run was propelled by three pointers from Jules Dang-Akodo and Dusha.

For the visitors, Smith was unstoppable inside and the barrage of three pointers kept the defense from packing the paint. May-Thompson snapped the Patriots run with a three-pointer that steered Derby back into control. Hassan dropped his shoulder and powered to the basket, igniting the home crowd, and Dusha followed up with a triple.

Derby were able to close the period with a huge three from Dieterich with eight seconds remaining. In the fourth, Plymouth battled back into the game with Dusha’s three pointer.

Match report by BBL.

However, the Trailblazers were playing with intensity and control; finding open shooters each time. Simeon Perry got on the scoreboard and Smith was dominant as he had been all game. Bruggeman’s 22 points and nine assists was capped off with a pair of free throws as Derby knocked off the BBL side in an impressive 99-89 victory.  The Trailblazers will now join the Sheffield Sharks, Cheshire Phoenix and Caledonia Gladiators in the BBL Trophy semi-finals.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO

How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.

Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition.

Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
