WERE FLYING BACK TO THE PAVILIONS

Words from the Chairman

- Carl Heslop

It seems like an age since we were at the pavilions to experience a home game and I for one think it’s way too long to have a month’s break before we get back to the Pavilions.

Since our last home game, a lot has happened at the club, and we didn’t anticipate switching three players for two at this stage of the season. It’s resulted in a different looking roster and a period of bedding in required with players learning the plays and gelling as a group. However, this has resulted in a much more positive group in training, and we look to hopefully transfer this to the court in 2023.

Jawaun, Ty and Jules have come in and shown flashes of what they can do. Ty bringing European experience and with an explosive 18 points in 16mins in the last game against Sheffield has shown we need to keep him on the floor more. Unfortunately, he has been carrying a slight knock and we can’t wait to get him more involved without having to manage games. Jawaun is a raw talent and finding his way around the pro game. Although not having the start he would like, high double-digit numbers are easily achievable once he fully gets into his groove. Jules has also brought experience and a calm head in games.

With new recruits we need older hands to give them some support and show them the ropes. Big performances from the likes of Deuce and Elvisi are required to give us an all-round team performance if we are to get anything against an in-form Bristol roster blowing teams away in the BBL. Bristol have a vastly improved squad this season and sure they will be looking to come away with two points this evening. However, we need to use any complacency as a fuel to get a result tonight and give our new team a boost.

We continue to grow off the court with our business club event happening next week on the 7th of February in the fantastic setting of Welbeck Manor. Networking and spending time with new and existing sponsors is so rewarding and its great to showcase what the club has been achieving this season. Our business environment is growing and the interest now in the club and its wider reach is really positive for the club moving forward.

Friday night basketball is only on hand for one game this season so let’s make the most of it and show our new debutants what a massive Pavilions welcome sounds like. I’m sure you will make them feel really welcome and let’s get our 2023 rocking!

COACH PJ A WORD FROM

Hello and welcome to this weekend’s games against the second and first place teams in the BBL Championship respectively.

Tonight, we play the second placed Bristol flyers who are having a tremendous season and looking very strong for a top four finish.

Sunday, we play the number one team in the league and BBL cup winners in the London Lions. This London team is the strongest that has ever been assembled in the BBL. They are packed with good talent in every position in the game and play a good style of basketball.

It’s great to be back playing at home after being away for practically the whole of January. We need all the help we can get now with changes to the roster lately.

Ty, Jawaun, and Jules have all come in at a tough time of the season and it will take time for the team to rediscover our identity and the way we want to play and how we must play to get back to winning ways. Hopefully not before long they will have the impact on the team I’m looking.

It’s always tough to integrate players part way through a season and it’s for the players that have been here throughout to stand up, be counted and show the way whilst the new players settle in.

The games will start to come thick and fast, and we need to rediscover our winning mentality quickly. I think it’s going to be an amazing second half to the season with every game bigger than the last. Hopefully you will give the team that extra push we need to get back to where we want to be.

Tonight, we play Bristol, which is always a very keenly fought game, before we play league leaders London Lions on Sunday. We must be ready to do battle with both teams and show the grit, toughness, and determination we are going to need to win games from now until the end of the season!!!

A warm welcome to the coaching staff, players, and support teams from Bristol and London for these BBL championship games.

ENJOY THE GAME.

TOOKIE DUNK MACHINE

This weekend saw the WBBL and BBL Cup Finals, both between the London Lions and Leicester Riders at the Utilita Arena, Birmingham. The event was a spectacular affair complete with a brass band, full DJ sets, ticker tape and flame throwing celebrations. The Lions would triumph in both fixtures, with the women’s final opening proceedings with a blow out victory and the men following suit although in a close affair. In between the two finals the crowd were treated to the annual BBL Slam Dunk Contest, featuring the Plymouth City Patriots own, James Hawthorne Jr. Hawthorne Jr, known affectionately as Tookie, a nickname given to him at birth by his Aunty back in Mississippi, wowed the crowd with his dunks and acrobatic attempts and, true to form, brought the crowd to a thunderous applause everytime he took to the court.

Tookie hit a number of exciting, acrobatic dunks. His first round dunk included a 360 degree spin with a left handed throwdown, getting high scores from the judges. His second dunk was also a 360, but from the right side, with the exclamation of a right handed windmill finish. This secured him a place in the final, where Tookie sought the help of a fellow contestant, to alley-oop pass to him, which proved unsuccessful, and essentially lost him the competition. Tookie would, however, get one final chance to wow the crowd with a high flying slam over Larry the Lion, the BBLs mascot, which he successfully finished.

“It was fine, got a chance to get some good dunks and I enjoyed it” said Tookie, in a post game interview. He continued “I enjoyed dunking over Larry [The Lion]. He told me that I should, so I just went along with it. With regards to his missed dunk where he required the help of fellow contestant Marcus Delpeche, Tookie had a light hearted response, saying, “I feel like I was sabotaged a little bit. If I’d have got that dunk I would have won, my dunks were by far the best.” He was also impressed by the event and the fans, and in closing said “It was lit, so many people rocking out and it was a wonderful experience. I think I did pretty good, you win some, you lose some. Thank you to the BBL for letting me participate in the dunk contest and hopefully I’ll be in another one sometime soon.”

The Plymouth City Patriots were also in action over the weekend, with a tough road trip loss to the Sheffield Sharks. The Patriots held a slender 5 point lead during the game, but were unable to hold onto it, as the home team Sharks managed to sneak ahead, and take the win, 82-77. Isa Brandon and Ty Gadsden had stand-out performances for the visitors, but it wouldn’t be enough for the win. It was the Patriots third straight loss in a row, with the new additions and roster changes putting a halt on the team’s progress so far this season, despite the side showing signs of cohesion. The Patriots are in action again Friday night, when they take on the Bristol Flyers at home. It’ll be the first game at Pavilions for over a month and a chance for the new signings to play in front of the raucous Plymouth fans.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO

How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.

Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition.

Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
